Mac App Store Announced - App Store is Coming to Mac

According to media reports, Apple held conference called "Back to the Mac" at the company headquarters on Wednesday. At the meeting, Apple CEO Steve Jobs released a Mac environment, family application suite iLife '11, new MacBook Air computers, and also notice the features of next-generation Mac operating system.

Mac App Store

Apple has announced a Mac App Store based upon their popular iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad App Stores. The Mac App Store will offer one-click download of Mac apps, auto-installation, auto-updates, a 70/30 split for developers, and all the apps you buy are licensed for use on all your personal Macs.

A Mac App Store is something that has been suggested in the past by press and readers alike, but few thought one would ever materialize. It will be interesting to see how Mac developers respond to this and if any major developers (like Adobe, Microsoft, etc.) join in. The Mac App Store will be a stand alone app available for Snow Leopard and Lion. Application submissions start in November and the store opens 90 days from today.

New Macbook Air

Steve Jobs announced that the new Macbook Air will be available starting at $999. It comes with an 11.6 inch or 13.3 screen, is instant-on and has memory that is up to twice as fast as older models. The thickest point of the latest Macbook Air is .68 of an inch, and it weighs 2.9 pounds. There is no optical drive or hard drive, which allows for the instant startup. Memory is stored on a solid state state flash drive, located directly on the motherboard rather than on a hard drive, which allows for a smaller, lighter machine.

iLife '11

iLife 11 Update With iPhoto, iMovie: Along with new MacBook Air, Apple today unveiled an updated version of iLife that comes loaded with many new features including a full-screen mode, Facebook enhancements, and new slideshows. Apple chief executive Steve Jobs said iLife is regarded as the

"best suite of digital life applications in the world" and is the driving force behind the sales of Mac.

The iLife 11 includes features like a full-screen mode, Facebook enhancements with responses, an easier way to e-mail photos, new slideshows, and a big leap in books. The new iLife also adds letter press cards as well.

Apple said that the iLife 11 will bring an entirely new way to e-mail photos. With the introduction of the iLife 11 the user just needs to click "share" on a group of photos, and iLife 11 will create an e-mail and a template to send to friends and family. A new sharing panel has been added to show activity within iLife 11.

FaceTime for Mac

Apple's Skype competitor just got millions of new potential users. FaceTime, once only available on the iPhone 4, has now expanded to include Macs. The video-chat service can connect Mac to Mac or Mac to iPhone. Expect more devices to hop aboard soon.

“FaceTime makes video calling to or from mobile devices easy for the first time,” says Mr. Jobs. “We’ve sold more than 19 million FaceTime-ready iPhone 4 and iPod touch devices in the past four months, and now those users can make FaceTime calls with tens of millions of Mac users.” The software requires OS X Snow Leopard (10.6). A beta test version is available for download at apple.com/mac/facetime.
