EDITOR’S LETTER

By the time you read this I would be a year older than I was when I last wrote this editorial. Yes this week is my birthday and you guys are welcome to send those belated birthday gifts. On my wish list there is only one item, the I Phone 6, who ever buys it for me will always have a special place in my heart. On a more serious note, residents of Mabopane are very lucky to live in an area that is constantly developing. I attended the launch of the roads and storm water infrastructure in Block B and you realize that government is not as bad as people make it out to be, yes there are challenges but government is working. Batsha ba ko Block A/Boekenhout also had a Youth Economic Development Summit hosted at Letlotlo Secondary by Councillor Lucy Majeng. The debates were interesting, but I was disappointed to see youth who still believe that things should come to them. Entrepreneurs are always on the move chasing their dreams; they are not sitting under a tree blaming government and everyone else about their challenges.

We hope you enjoy this edition. We are on Facebook: Mabopanesun and Twitter@Mabopanesun please follow us.

MORULA SUN MENLYN MOVE NOT A DONE DEAL

Words and Images: Frans Malatsi

The building of the controversial R3 Billion Sun International Casino and entertainment complex in Menlyn is not set in stone. Choose Life Church and other concerned groups brought an application in the North Gauteng High Court against the City Of Tshwane, arguing that the rezoning of the site for the casino had been done improperly and that the correct procedures had not been followed. Judge Ronel Tomay, who heard the application, reserved judgment in the matter. According to Pastor Bruce Taylor of Choose Life Church, residents never had the appropriate opportunity to object to the establishment of the casino on their doorstep. Sun International said that the development of its Time Square Complex in Menlyn Maine would maximize the potential of the gaming license for all stakeholders, employees, shareholders and for government in terms of gaming taxes.

LOCAL FILM COMPLETEWords and Images: Frans Malatsi

In June we interviewed a local filmmaker who was auditioning youth for a movie titled Ke Moratile, which means I am fond of this person. The storyline follows a young man called Percy who was homeless and experienced a lot of hardships in his youth but was later adopted by a Samaritan strange woman. The film was shot between June and July and it is complete. The movie employed around 46 crew members from around Mabopane and surrounding areas including actors, directors and production staff. The producers of the film are busy organizing a launch for the film, the venue and dates will be announced soon.“What I want the audience of the film to take away from the film, is the spirit of resilience and tenacity. Never give up in life, said Percy Mthimunye, Scriptwriter and Producer. The producers of the self-

funded film hope that by February 2015 the movie should be shown in local TV channels.

LAUNCH OF COMPLETED ROADS

Words and Images: Frans Malatsi

The end of October saw residents of Mabopane block B host one of the City Of Tshwane's infrastructure development goals, which is the launch of completed roads and storm water systems. Local residents mostly pensioners attended the event in great numbers, at Bana Primary School. “Re lebogile mokanselara wa rena Ntate Joel Sindane, ga a relwetse go re lerena re be le ditsela tse di botoka mo Mabopane, said Mme Joyce. The event was attended by the MMC of Transport and Roads Mr Matjila, Councillor Joel Sindane and MMC Of Finance Miss Mabiletsa. “Residents of Mabopane should take care of this roads, you should not allow people to dig holes on this roads, you should not allow people to race cars on this roads. These roads are meant to make your lives better, said MMC Matjila. Councillor Sindane reiterated MMC Matjila's statements and went further to say that the ANC government made this day possible and people should not be

afraid to acknowledge the good work done by the government and he told people in attendance not to believe the doomsayers who criticize government and say the government is not doing anything for its people.

PROFILE

Q 1: What inspired you to write this book?I was inspired to write this book after encountering a lot of people talking about how they failed and how they wanted to throw in the towel. Some spoke to me about how they wanted to end their lives after failing and also studied the lives of icons who overcame failure in their lives.

Q2: What do you think causes fear to fail?Fear of failure is caused by either rumours about failure or when one has indeed encountered failure and it has left them in a state of paralysis. Q3: Do you think we are not encouraged to take more risks in our lives for fear of failure?Society dictates to people on how to live. As I was growing up I was told that matric is not a matress so is tough to pass but I made it and I was told university is tough yet I made it. It is within your mind that failure is permanent. People should understand failure is not the end of your journey but a detour.

Q 4: What do you hope to achieve with this book? With this book I want to influence and change perceptions about failure and also offer advice on how to handle failure and its fears.

Q5: Who should read this book (target audience)? The target audience is every person whether young or old who has either failed or want to learn about how to overcome failure.

Q 6: What is the response from people who read this book?People who read the book have given me thumbs up and actually recommended the book to others to read. It has been positive feedbacks all the way.

Q 7: Do you think we will ever overcome fear of failure? It is possible that we can overcome fear of failure if we decide to stand up and confront failure.

Q 8: Do you think we need to fail more in order to overcome failure?Failure teaches us success, I wouldn't say people should fail more in order to overcome failure. People should develop strategies on how to avoid or deal with failure after it has happened.

Q 9: How do people bounce back from failure?People should acknowledge the fact that no one is immune from failure and once we acknowledge that we are in a better position to bounce back from failure.

Q10: What is your advice to readers about conquering day to day failures in their lives?I would advise people to have daily plans on how their days will unfold so as to be in a position to conquer their day to day challenges emanating from failure. Daily plans assist us in making sure what we need to do and when.

Results from a recent survey show that many primary care physicians lack knowledge of allergy causes and treatments. Many primary care doctors may not be up to speed on the causes and best treatments for allergies, a new study suggests. In a survey of over 400 internists and pediatricians, researchers found that misconceptions about allergies were fairly common – particularly when it came to food allergies. For example, one-third of all doctors, and half of internists, did not know the go-to treatment for a person who develops hives and vomiting after eating a known food allergen. (It's an epinephrine injection.) There were also false beliefs about some of the causes and consequences of allergies. Most internists – 85 percent – thought people with egg allergies cannot receive the flu vaccine, the findings showed. And only 27 percent of pediatricians knew that milk and eggs are the most common causes of food allergies in children younger than 4. Instead, pediatricians more often cited strawberries – which don't even make the list of the eight most common food allergens, said Dr. Neeta Ogden, a spokesperson for the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI). "It's concerning that many paediatricians don't have the most common food allergens on their radar," said Ogden, who was not involved in the study. Dr. David Stukus, the senior researcher on the work, agreed. "This points to some key areas where there's a need for more education," said Stukus, an allergy

Many doctors uninformed about allergiesspecialist at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

Unsurprising findings

But the findings, to be presented at the ACAAI's annual meeting in Atlanta, did not come as a surprise to Stukus."When we designed the study, we were aiming to confirm some suspicions we'd had," he said. And to an extent, Stukus noted, it's understandable that primary care doctors would lack some allergy knowledge, since they can't be experts in all specialties. But, he and Ogden pointed out, there are some basics that general practitioners should know – such as the fact that people with egg allergies can get the flu shot. (Some flu vaccines are manufactured using chicken eggs, and may contain tiny bits of egg protein. But people with egg allergies can safely receive the shot, according to the ACAAI.) With something as "vital" as flu vaccination, Ogden said, it's important that doctors are better informed. Two other misconceptions were common in the survey: Most pediatricians thought skin testing for food or airborne allergens is inaccurate when done in children younger than 3 – which isn't true, Ogden said. In addition, most doctors thought it was necessary to ask patients about allergies to shellfish or iodine before they could have a CT scan or other tests that use iodine-containing "contrast" dyes. -Health24.com

CAREERS

When viewing a candidate's CV employers tend to spend as little as a few seconds scanning it before deciding on whether or not it makes the grade or gets thrown into the trash. If you have any problem areas such as a lack of experience or gaps of long-term unemployment, here are a few tips to help you out.

1. You lack experience Problem: Employers don't know you. To them a lack of experience may signal an inability to do the job and while you might be able to prove them wrong, your CV suggests differently. The reality is that there are plenty of candidates who have far more experience than you do, and who are probably lining up for an interview..Solution: This might be a tough one to solve as many recruiters and employers only give CVs a second glance if it represents an outstanding employee. However, it's not a lost cause – this is where an excellent cover letter will come into play. Use your cover letter to explain why you want the job and why you would be great at it. Don't just list what's already on your CV. If you've had part-time jobs or have volunteered at other organizations, put it in your cover letter to show your potential employer that you have drive and a track record with references.

2. You were recently fired Problem: Potential employers want to hire someone reliable, and if you were fired from your previous job, they need to know that you won't make the same mistake twice.Solution: Before your interview practice your answer. Make sure you tell the interviewer what you learnt and what you would now do differently given the chance. When answering you have to

Top 4 CV setbacks and solutionsdemonstrate to the interviewer that you hold no anger towards the company or your previous employers and that you're ready to tackle new challenges.

3. Your CV makes you look like a job hopper Problem: This may appear to be a problem as employers don't want someone who will pack up and leave after a few months. If your CV indicates that you've stayed in various jobs for less than two years at a time, you may be labeled a job hopper.Solution: You have to try and include as much detail as possible on your CV. If the 6-month job for example was meant to be a short-term job, then state, “contract job”. If you meant to help out for only 3 months, say that it was a temp job. However, if those jobs really indicated that you were a job hopper, you'll have to make the interviewer understand that you're ready to find a stable job with a company that you can grow with and that your skills will add great value to the company.

4. You've been unemployed for a long time Problem: If you have long-term unemployment gaps on your CV the interviewer might wonder why no one has hired you yet. They might question whether you were fired and left it off, for example.Solution: If you had good reason for the gap in your CV like you were volunteering at a non-profit organization for example, say it in your interview. Whatever the reason was, be prepared to tell the interviewer why you were unemployed for a long period of time. –Career24.com

SA small business minister launches Startup Nations South Africa initiative

Words by: Staff Reporter

South African Small Business Minister Lindiwe Zulu launched the Startup Nations South Africa initiative, a collaborative effort by founding partners, The Innovation Hub, the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) and the Wits Business School, aimed at contributing towards building a robust entrepreneurship ecosystem and vibrant sustainable entrepreneurship culture. With the launch of the initiative, South Africa joins a global network of Startup Nations such as Startup Britain, Startup Chile, Startup Malaysia, Startup China, Startup Norway, Startup Australia and more recently Startup Brazil, Startup Vietnam and Startup Korea. The aim of the global network is to advance the national agenda for entrepreneurship and the creation of a sustainable environment where start-ups and small businesses can meaningfully contribute to the economic and social development of South Africa. As a full member of Startup Nations and Global Entrepreneurship Week, supported by the Kauffman Foundation, this initiative will enable local startup businesses to share best practices and collaborate with other like-minded peers in the global entrepreneurship movement. Speaking at the launch event, Minister Zulu said, “The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) 2012 annual survey reminds us that entrepreneurship levels in our country are the lowest they have been in three years. The call to action is for all of us to work hard to inculcate a culture of entrepreneurship in the country. We must consciously strive to build a nation of entrepreneurs and not a nation of job-seekers.” “In the spirit of vukuzenzele,” she added, “Our people must seize the

economic opportunities presented by our democracy and freedom to build and grow businesses. We see small businesses and co-operatives as critical to creating an economy that benefits all. It is through this intervention that we will be able to defeat the triple challenges of poverty, unemployment and inequality.” Through the support of the Industrial Development Corporation, The Innovation Hub, and the Wits Business School's Center for Entrepreneurship; Startup Nations South Africa will focus on creating a national collaboration platform between public sector, private sector, academia and civil society. “Cultivating entrepreneurship is vital for generating inclusive growth in South Africa. Startup Nations South Africa is an extremely important initiative because it will create the conditions for entrepreneurs to flourish and showcases what can be achieved through collaboration between the public and private sectors, and civil society.,” says Professor Steve Bluen, Director and Head of School, Wits Business School.

ENTERTAINMENTArtist: Chris BrownAlbum: XGenre: PopYear Of Release: 2014

Who needs haters when you're your own worst enemy? Chris Brown has been a self-saboteur since his infamous 2009 assault of Rihanna -- a talent whose skill for hit singles and agile performances is only matched by his knack for cannonballing into career-threatening pools of legal and PR problems. His sixth studio album, X, is a great example. The LP was originally slated for release in late 2013, on the heels of single "Fine China," an instantly catchy tribute to Off the Wall-era Michael Jackson. But before you could call it a comeback, Brown was charged with assault in Washington, D.C., a parole violation that led to stints in rehab and 108 days in a Los Angeles jail. Even he was behind bars, however, another single, "Loyal," crept into the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. After his June release, Brown is returning to the spotlight, conducting his first post-jail interview for Billboard's Sept. 13 issue and finally unleashing X.The album is solid, with several potential hits.

Artist: Sam SmithAlbum: In The Lonely HourGenre: R&BYear Of Release: 2014

Not even Disclosure's rise to fame as trendsetters for last year's U.K. garage revival could overshadow Sam Smith, who lent soulful vocals to the Lawrence brother's whiplashing hit "Latch." It was impossible not to notice Smith's heart-rending range, which seemed to have come out of nowhere (even though the 21-year-old London singer had technically been around since age 12, when he signed a management deal as a preternaturally talented jazz vocalist). Even with his signature unforgettable voice, however, Smith was still trying to figure out his musical identity at that point. As he told Billboard in a recent interview, during the beginning stages of writing his debut LP, "In the Lonely Hour," he wanted to make a "Rihanna record." It's a good thing he decided not to. Given the success of "Latch" and Smith's follow-up single, Naughty Boy's ridiculously catchy 2013 smash "La La La," he could easily have made a more beat-reliant debut.

CD REVIEWS

Movie: The Good LieCast: Reese Witherspoon, Arnold Oceng, Ger Duany, Emmanuel Jal, Corey StollDirector: Philippe Falardeau

They were known simply as “The Lost Boys.” Orphaned by the brutal Civil war in Sudan that began in 1983, these young victims traveled as many as a thousand miles on foot in search of safety. Fifteen years later, a humanitarian effort took 3 600 lost boys and girls to America. This is the story of their survival and triumph in life. I have to admit when I watched the trailer of The Good Lie I rolled my eyes and thought to myself, here we go again; another movie where the Americans save everyone, like they always seem to do in movies. And who can blame me for thinking that this movie would be about Reese Witherspoon playing the saviour when it has been marketed that way? The poster itself is made up of a giant close up of her. The Good Lie is based on the real life events of an American woman Carrie (Reese Witherspoon), an employment counsellor who helps four young Sundanese refugees known as The Lost Boys after they are relocated to the US.

Health scare for Mark FishBafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates legend Mark Fish says he will not be playing in the Orlando Pirates versus Manchester United legends match once his stint in hospital is over. According to the Kickoff website, his fiancée, Salome Jansen van Rensburg, rushed Fish to the Vereeniging Medi-Clinic in the early hours of Sunday morning after Fish was said to have turned white and blue after finding difficulty breathing as a result of his severe back and chest pain. Fish said that he was already having issues with his back and chest before the incident and underwent tests upon his stay at the hospital. According to the 1996 AFCON winner, the doctor confirmed that there is nothing wrong with his heart, but that he ought to take better care of himself. He did however say that despite not playing in Saturday's match for the Orlando Pirates Legends at Ellis Park, he would attend the match out of respect for slain Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates skipper, Senzo Meyiwa. -Sports24.co.za
