(IaaC) is an international centre or research, educa-tion, investigation and development oriented towardarchitecture as a discipline that addresses diferentscales o territorial analysis and urban developmentas well as diverse architectural projects, digital proc-esses and inormation environments. Located in Bar-celona, one o the international capitals o Urbanism, the institute directed by Vicente Guallart developsmultidisciplinary programmes that explore interna-tional urban and territorial phenomena, with a spe-
cial emphasis on the opportunities that arise rom theemergent territories and on the cultural, economicand social values that architecture can contributeto society. IaaC sets out to take R+D to architectureand urbanism and to create multidisciplinary knowl-edge networks, and to this end the institute worksin collaboration with a number o cities and regions, industrial groups and research centres, including theMassachusetts Institute o Technology (MIT), the Uni-versity o Brighton and the University o Chicago, de-veloping various research programmes which bringtogether experts in diferent disciplines such as en-gineering, sociology, anthropology, architecture andother elds o investigation. VISIONARCHITECTURE FROM BITS TO GEOGRAPHY
The IaaC takes a multiscale approach to theproject o the physical construction o theworld, simultaneously engaging issues onthe scales o the territory, the building, anddigital abrication with the aim o trans-orming architecture into a discipline that, rather than build buildings, produces habi-tats, complete and complex multiscalar
environments that are open to the develop-ment o social living.
With this in view it has created a locus oeducation, research, development and di-usion o architectural knowledge, an envi-ronment or international participation en-compassing institutions, proessionals andstudents rom ve continents that enablesit to address global and local issues rom adiverse and multicultural perspective.
The IaaC works in close cooperationwith experts rom a wide range oelds, including engineering, anthro-pology, nsociology, IT, mathematics, biology and ecology, as an optimummeans o ormulating the project inthe physical world in terms o multi-disciplinary knowledge
and ostering the emergence o newways o constructing reality. Barcelona,
one o the great international centreso architecture and urbanism, is thus ahub or a new generation o ideas andinitiatives in the development o archi-tecture and the city, capable o attract-ing talent and stimulating innovationin the construction o the world on thebasis o the understanding aforded byhistory and experience.

OBJECTIVESThe IaaCs activities are rooted in specicobjectives. To start with, the IaaC MasterProgramme and urther activities seekto stimulate, promote and develop re-search in the diverse areas o advancedarchitecture, increasing the potential oinormation-gathering teams workingin architecture and in interaction withother disciplines. In addition, IaaC is ac-tive in a consultancy role, working withlocal authorities and other public and
private organizations on issues relatedto architecture. To date the Institute hasestablished a number o scientic andacademic collaborative ventures withuniversities and major national andinternational inormation-gatheringcentres specializing in architecture andrelated disciplines (notably inormationtechnology and sustainable develop-
ment, among others).
The plan or the uture consists in continuingand extending these academic collabora-tions as well as the establishment o appro-priate collaborative ventures with local, re-gional and national government bodies andthe private sector in terms o their own coreactivities. IaaCs current reality and objec-tive is to acilitate closer contact betweenbasic and applied research, acting as a cen-tre o technology transer when appropri-ate, and organizing scientic encounters
and national and international orums. Lastbut not least, IaaC produces exhibitions andpublications on a local, national and interna-tional level, activities that will be continuedand extended in the uture. Finally, the IaaCseeks to relaunch Barcelona as a centre orthe creation o knowledge in architecture, inwhich ater the citys Olympic era, generatedcontent and discourses or the 21st century.

The IaaC works beyond the conven-tional scales o territorial design, townplanning, building or abrication in de-signing a multiscale habitat. As in thedesign o ecosystems, each level has its
own rules o interaction and relation, and at the same time must complywith certain parameters that pertain tothe system as a whole. The EmergentTerritories group works on projectsthat range in scale rom the territory tothe neighbourhood. The idea o Emer-gent Territories is related to two issues:On the one hand, the IaaC is interestedin understanding those countries andcities around the world with emergingeconomies and cultures that, by virtueo their regional or economic position, can contribute value to the planet as awhole. In recent years we have studiedBrazil, Croatia, Taiwan, Romania, Co-lombia and Tunisia, or in the near uture
will be studying India and the countrieso North Arica, the Persian Gul andSub-Saharan Arica. The work done inthese countries seeks to identiy the
EMERGENT
TERRITORIESparticular urban and territorial values othese places in order to construct more in-telligent territories anywhere in the world, moving on rom the Western idea thatthere is a single model o city (be it Euro-
pean or American) to work on the basis omore complex and more open values. Theother issue related to emergent territorieshas to do with the creation o intelligentterritories that unction in a multiscalarway, in order that the relationship betweennatures, networks and nodes can omentthe emergence o an urban intelligence. To this end we are interested in pursuingwhat we call Hyperhabitat research as aprocess o developing a general theory othe multiscalar habitat that can be appliedanywhere in the world and at any scale, as abasis or the construction o complete com-plex ecosystems. This group also ocuseson Barcelona as a site or ongoing urbanexperimentation, with a view to contrib-
uting to the discussions and reections inrelation to the urban progress o the city.

SELFSUFFICIENT
BUILDINGSArchitecture goes beyond buildings.A building is a concentration o activi-ties in a particular location which shouldbe responsive to concrete cultural, so-
cial, economic and technological condi-tions. In the 21st century, the buildingsare more than machines or dwellingin. They should be living organisms, ca-pable o interacting with their environ-ment, ollowing the principles o ecolo-gy or biology rather than those o mereconstruction. In efect, a building shouldbe like a tree, which is able to rootingitsel in a particular place, generatingits own energy, interacting with thenatural networks around it and creatingcomplex ecosystems and landscapestogether with other trees. This beingso, the Sel-su cient Buildings groupworks on scales that range rom themacro-building to the individual home,
developing principles and techniquesthat serve to organize the materializa-tion o programmatic nodes o activitybased on natural rules and principles.
As a result, the building goes beyond be-ing a mere interace or the economic ac-tivities it houses to being an environmentthat stimulates its inhabitants and unc-
tions as an active part o the ecosystem inwhich it is inserted. Buildings also need torespond to specic cultural conditions, andthe multicultural global vision that the IaaCrepresents allows can be applied, via de-bate and research, to architecture projectsanywhere in the world. This group devotesspecial attention to housing and the neworms o social organization o our time,by way o buildings with shared spaces,or macrobuildings that incorporate all theunctions o a city. This group is working tointroduce innovative techniques such as lo-cal energy generation, the development osel-su cient buildings, the incorporationo hydrogen into the building and the useo new materials, responding to each situa-
tion with ad-hoc techniques and principles.

IAAC develops diferent research and special projectsalong the Academical Year. Students will be asked toparticipate in some o those initiatives in parallel totheir studies.
The Fab Lab House is a new generation Fab Lab homewhose goal is to not industrialize but allow any personto manuacture anywhere in the world, rom the plat-orm o Fab Labs, or abrication laboratories. The production methodology o the house is ound-ed in a structure abricated rom common materialssourced globally (plywood panels, etc.), and in the useo locally ound machinery (laser cutting and/or mill-ing machine). It is denitely a very afordable housingsolution, designed with a combination o simple con-struction, geometric sophistication and technologicalwealth, both in its creation as an energy system as wellas in the active and passive management o the house. It was produced in 2010 or the Solar Decathlon Europeand it will be rebuilt in the next months.
IAAC is also developing the project ENERGRID with theSpanish power company ENDESA in order to developthe Internet o Energy. Prototypes o this system willbe developed in IAAC during the ollowing months and
nally they will be brought in Can Valldaura House.
Other projects developed by IAAC are exhibitions, suchas the Fabrication Laboratory exhibition at the DissenyHub Barcelona as well as special workshops during theacedemic year.
