MA-ORI AND PASIFIKA TRADES TRAINING

Māori and Pasifika students looking to learn a trade can apply for a Māori and Pasifika Trades Training scholarship, which is a government funded scholarship to cover full fees and course-related costs.

The Tamaiti Whāngai team will support you with mentoring and goal-setting. Our job brokers can help you find and prepare for work, including getting your driver’s license, site safety or first aid certificates..

SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIAYou need to meet the entry criteria for the programme you are enrolling in and be:

• of Māori or Pasifika descent

• 16-40 years old at the start of your study

• a New Zealand citizen or Permanent Resident

• able to meet the entry requirements for your programme

Develop foundation skills in engine repair and performance, servicing, electrics as well as basic engineering tasks and welding. Work on light and diesel vehicles. Apply your skills with work experience. Progress to the New Zealand Certificate in Automotive Engineering (Managed Apprenticeship).Entry CriteriaDomestic – 10 credits at NCEA Level 1 Literacy and 10 credits at NCEA Level 1 Numeracy or equivalent skills and knowledge. A pre-entry interview may be required.

New Zealand Certificate in Construction Trade Skills (Carpentry)Level 3

There’s high demand for carpenters. Gain core skills from setting out and levelling to framing and roofing. Learn in the workshop and on the building site where you’ll construct a house that will become a family’s home. Learn to apply safe work practices and build a solid CV for entering an industry apprenticeship.Entry CriteriaDomestic – 10 credits at NCEA Level 1 Literacy and 10 credits at NCEA Level 1 Numeracy or equivalent evidence of ability to undertake the physical requirements of the programme based on application and interview.

Azaria is doing a cadetship with construction firm, Hawkins.

“It’s pretty intense working in the industry, but I’m definitely in the right place. At the moment I’m working on apartments in Mount Victoria.” Azaria (Samoan) studied the pre-trade Certificate in Carpentry qualification. “We learnt the basics of carpentry. It got us used to using the tools that I use now on the job.”“My tutor put my name forward for Hawkins. I did work experience for three weeks and then they hired me.”“I’d like to encourage more females into trades because our abilities as women are underestimated.”

Construction TradesNew Zealand Certificate in Electrical Engineering TheoryLevel 3

Duration 1 year, full-time

Location Petone, Porirua

Designed to prepare you for an apprenticeship. Learn basic electrical theory and regulations. Build practical skills such as circuit wiring and how to use power instruments. Train in our workshops where you’ll diagnose and fix electrical faults.Entry CriteriaDomestic – 48 credits at NCEA Level 2 in four subjects – including at least 12 credits in Numeracy. If you do not meet the maths entry criteria you maybe able to study a lower level maths course while studying the NZDE to achieve the required maths entry level or equivalent qualification or relevant work experience.

New Zealand Certificate in Plumbing, Gasfitting and DrainlayingLevel 3

Duration 22 weeks, full-time

Designed to prepare you for an apprenticeship. Train in our workshops and drainlaying pit. Learn how to use and maintain tools. Develop skills in brazing and soldering. You’ll identify methods for weatherproofing and safely install plumbing systems, drains and gas pipes.Entry CriteriaDomestic – 10 credits at NCEA Level 1 Literacy and 10 credits at NCEA Level 1 Numeracy, or equivalent qualification or relevant work experience.

Use different materials like ceramics, stone, glass and terracotta. Train in our workshops. Gain safe worksite skills so you’re ready for industry.Entry CriteriaDomestic – 10 credits at NCEA Level 1 Literacy and 10 credits at NCEA Level 1 Numeracy, or equivalent qualification or relevant work experience.

Learn to professionally prepare surfaces and paint interiors and exteriors. Develop your decorating skills by learning wallpapering and spray painting. Gain safe worksite skills so you’re ready to work in industry. Get the opportunity to practise your skills in the workshop and on real projects.Entry CriteriaDomestic – 10 credits at NCEA Level 1 Literacy and 10 credits at NCEA Level 1 Numeracy, or equivalent qualification or relevant work experience.

Noaese has completed the Level 3 plumbing programme, and has continued onto an apprenticeship.After finding it difficult at the start, Noaese (Samoan/Tokeauan) came to really enjoy the plumbing programme, and learnt alot. “I’ve picked up a range of skills this year, including welding, pipe outs, and installing drains.” “I didn’t know what I wanted to do at the start of the programme, but now I do. I want to work towards becoming a fully qualified plumber.”Noaese’s mentor praises him for the progress he has made. “He’s found his feet and has set himself goals for the future.”

Whether you’re passionate about Bread baking or delicate pastries, you’ll gain a solid foundation in baking skills. Our experienced professionals will teach you the how’s and why’s to create, finish and present beautiful bakery items. Work as a trainee baker or progress to further training.Entry CriteriaDomestic – 10 credits at NCEA Level 1 Literacy and 10 credits at NCEA Level 1 Numeracy or equivalent skills and knowledge.

New Zealand Certificate in Mechanical EngineeringLevel 3

Duration 1 year, full-time

Gain skills to build, maintain and operate mechanical engineering equipment and plant. Learn maintenance fitting, welding, machining, sheet metalwork and fabrication. Use the machinery that is used in the industry. Work on your own projects to develop your skills further.Entry CriteriaDomestic – NCEA Level 1 with 10 credits in Literacy and 10 credits at Numeracy (algebra, trigonometry, measurement recommended), or equivalent skills and knowledge and evidence of ability to undertake the physical requirements of the programme.

Mechanical Engineering

Caelym works as an apprentice at a mechanical engineering firm in Petone, carrying on a family tradition.

“It’s what my old man does so I knew a bit about it, and now I’m building on the things he taught me.”Through the Māori and Pasifika Trades Training Scholarship, Caelym (Ngāti Kahungunu) learned welding and fabrication skills. “We got to work on things too. I made an outdoor oil heater, a seat and a toolbox.”“Now I work at a general engineering shop so we do anything and everything. We roll stainless tube, we do road signs, aluminium, stainless tube forming, machining, drilling, welding.”

Duration 1 year, full-time

Learn essential skills such as reception duties, shampooing, applying treatments or colours under supervision, and styling. You’ll also be introduced to cutting. Develop experience working as a team member in our salon. Work backstage on the World of Wearable Art Awards Show and take the opportunity to work on other productions and high fashion events.Entry CriteriaDomestic – NCEA Level 1, or equivalent qualification or relevant work experience.

New Zealand Certificate in Barber SkillsLevel 3

Duration 1 year, full-time

Learn haircuts, clipper work, cutting and shaving, sales and the crucial social skills needed in barbering. Benefit from industry masterclasses each week. There is also a work experience component. Train in our barbershops open to the public and begin building your clientele – you’ll have done hundreds of haircuts by the time you’ve finished. Entry CriteriaDomestic – NCEA Level 1 with 10 credits at Literacy and Numeracy or equivalent qualification or relevant work experience.

Duration 17 weeks, full-time

Gain an introduction to basic beauty services, communication, professionalism and sales strategies. Learn practical skills from skincare and maintenance through to classic and trending makeup looks.Entry CriteriaDomestic – NCEA Level 1 or evidence of equivalent skills and knowledge.

Hair, Beauty and Makeup

Jasmine loves working at Colours Hair Design in Plimmerton as a hairdressing apprentice, but hairdressing wasn’t always her first choice.

“I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do so I thought I’d give hairdressing a go and see how I liked it,” says Jasmine.“The best part is the creative side of hairdressing.”Through the Māori and Pasifika Trades Training initiative, Jasmine (Ngāti Raukawa) was able to gain an apprenticeship.“The Māori student mentors would come into class to see how we were going, to catch up and help with things like finding models to practice our work on.”

WHO CAN APPLY You must be:• Of Māori or Pasifika descent• 16-40 years of age at the start of your study• A New Zealand citizen or New Zealand permanent resident• Able to meet the entry criteria of the programme

SELECTION CRITERIA Applicants will be chosen because they:

• Show a genuine desire to succeed in their chosen trades programme

• Are committed to completing both the practical and theory components of the programme

• Are keen to get employment in one of the industries our programmes prepare students for

• Are committed to Pasifika group, hapū, iwi and/or Māori workforce development

SELECTION PROCESSThe selection panel will create a shortlist from the information you provide in your scholarship application based on the selection criteria listed above. Shortlisted applicants may be asked to attend an interview.

SELECTION CONDITIONS • Scholarships will be awarded on the basis that the

information supplied is true and correct. WelTec or Whitireia can withdraw the scholarship if the information is proved to be inaccurate or incomplete.

• If you turn down the scholarship, or do not accept the scholarship by the required date, the selection panel may offer the scholarship to another applicant. The scholarship is for study in 2020.

• The decision of the selection panel is final.
