Ma109: College Algebra• Not a remedial course• Assumes 2 years of high school algebra (or

equivalent) and 21 Math ACT or sufficient score on placement exam

• Text: College Algebra by Dr. Avinash Sathaye– Available for free download– Printouts available at book stores

• Uses Web Homework system– Not in any sense an “online” course

• Calculators are expected– may be used but will not be required on tests

• Applications are primarily of algebra to geometry

Point Requirements for Individual Grades

Homework + quizzes total 65 Points = 14.44% of Grade

• Homework uses web system– Can submit any number of times till problem set expires– Can work together on homework (encouraged)– Can get external help on homework (permitted)– Number of homework points (out of 10 possible) on a test determined

by average of scores on homework sets for that test• At least 40% on Wed version homework + at least 85% on Sunday version

for full 10 points.• Less than 40% on Wed + at least 85% on Sunday version for 8 points.• Less than 40% on Wed reduces max from Sunday score by 2 points (or to

0)

• Eight 5 point quizzes. These are unannounced. – No makeups.– The scores will be added, and your quiz grade will be

the minimum of 25 and the sum of your quiz scores.

DO NOT check “For Browsing Only”

When done press “BACK”

(4) Print off a copyof the homework(see next slide)

Select “Printer Friendly Questions” then print the page from thebrowser “file” menu. This can be done for free in Mathskeller

Work the problems on paper and enter answers later (will likely need to log in again)

As answers are entered pressSave Work

After some answers are entered press Go to Submit Button Problems do not need to be

marked “done” to be checked.

Yellow means an answer has been entered but a correct answer has not been submitted

Press: Submit and Record Results

When an answer has been submitted for a problem a dialogue box opensinto which questions about the problem can be directed to the teacher.

All comments orquestions entered this way are submitted the next time the “submit and record” button is pressed

If too much time elapses the session will time out and you must re-enter password to continue
