1.2 Initial Actions

1. Verify the problem.

2. Check that the printer paper path is clear of foreign matter such as staples, paper clips, andpaper scraps.

3. After you have identified the problem symptom, check the following items:

• The printer is connected to a wall power outlet, and the outlet is supplying the correctvoltage.

• The printer power cord is not frayed or broken.

• The printer is correctly grounded.

• The printer is in an appropriate operating environment, with no extremes of heat

or humidity.

• The printer is on a level and stable surface.

1.3 Corrective Actions

1. If the printer has an obvious failure or fault, you can go directly to the appropriate ”RepairProcedures” in Section 4 or ”Troubleshooting” in Section 2 and begin corrective action.

2. If the fault is related to Image Quality, go directly to Section 3 to correct the problem.

3. After all corrective actions have been made, perform Final Actions.

1.4 Final Actions

1. Run Test Prints to evaluate print quality.

2. Refer to 2.2.7 Print Quality Problems and correct any print quality defects.

3. Correct any secondary problems (return to Corrective Actions, if necessary).

4. Reinstall the machine covers.

5. Clean the machine.

6. Verify printer operation with the printer connected to a host computer.

1.5 Maintenance Approach

The diagnostic information in this manual leads you to the correct replaceable unit or part. Use the error

indicator charts, symptom index, service checks, and diagnostic aids to determine the symptom and

repair the failure.

The user is directed, in the Printer Control program, to perform the head to head and bi-directional

alignment adjustments after replacing a print cartridge.

After you complete the repair, perform tests as needed to verify the repair.

2.1 Getting StartedTo check the basic printer functions, print a Test Print. Observe printer behavior during the tests toenable fault isolation. In most cases, the printer will not have a print head installed when the printer isreturned for service. In this case, Section 3 Image Quality May not apply.

2.1.1 Control Panel LED IndicationsError indications are displayed by the LED indicator on the control panel. If your printer displays an errorindication during operation, refer to 2.1.2 Error Indicator Table and take the necessary action.

2.1.2 Error Indicator TableObserving the 3 LED indicators will provide a visual indication of the printer status. Refer to the ErrorIndicator table below to determine the printer status as indicated by the LED operation.

Troubleshooting 5/00 DocuPrint M750/M7602-4

2.1.3 Power On Self TestThe printer performs a software-controlled Power On Self Test (POST) when power is initially applied.Unplug and then reconnect the power cord. This will initiate the POST routine. If the printer resets andis operational, the problem was one that was temporary. If the problem still exists, the 3 LED indicatorswill provide a visual indication of the printer status. Refer to 2.2.1 POST Symptoms and take thenecessary action.

2.1.4 Printer TestsThe POST test cannot determine problems that may be encountered during printing or situations whereink cartridge maintenance is required. To check these functions, the printer should be tested by runningan internal and external print test.

a. Internal Print Test. Running a Print Test will demonstrate the operational status of the printer.Run a print test (refer to Section 6, Print Head Test) to verify printer operation, print cartridgealignment and printer setup information.

b. External File Print. To verify that the printer can print from an external source, a file should besent from a host computer. This will check that the associated cabling is functioning properly aswell as ensuring that the handshaking between the printer and the host computer is correct. Todo this, connect the computer to a host computer with the appropriate printer drivers installed. Then send a print job from the host computer to the printer.

2.1.5 Printer Operation and EvaluationEvaluate the results of these tests to determine whether the printer is operating properly and, if not, which printer functions are not operating correctly. Refer to 2.2 Symptom Tables based on theobserved problems.

Page 17: M750 Service Manual

DocuPrint M750/M760 5/00 Troubleshooting2-5

2.2 Symptom TablesThe symptom tables provide guidance in troubleshooting the printer, based on the results of running atest print or on overall visual operating performance of the printer during a file print from an externalcomputer.

2.2.1 POST SymptomsTo reinitiate the POST routine, press and hold the Resume button. If the test print runs successfully, the error was temporary. If the error remains, unplug and reconnect the power cord to run the testagain.

If the POST test fails, the LED indicators blink or light to indicate the nature of the failure. Refer to2.1.2 Error Indicator Table for error indications. Take the action indicated. If the error condition still exists, Refer to Section 4, Replace the IOT Control PWB.

2.2.2 Power Problems
