CAUTION

The MILES equipment for the M60 is shown in Task 1 of this Technical Manual(TM). Use the picture with Task 1 as a guide for equipment distribution. Besure to issue a copy of this TM along with the MILES equipment.

Make certain that the MWLD torso and helmet harnessesare completely dry before storage in transit case.

When receiving equipment for storage, always inspect the returned equipment,using Task 8 in this TM for guidance.

Return all MILES equipment and the TMs to their transit cases.

Special Instructions for Infrequently Used Equipment:

If M60/MILES equipment is unused for 60 days remove from transit case andperform Tasks 1,2, and 8.

If you can not do all these tasks ask your NC0 or instructor to show you how.When you can do all the tasks, go on to the next page.

M60 machine gun operators also wear a Man Worn Laser Detector (MWLD) assembly.Instruct ions for using the MWLD found in TM9-1265-370-10-1.

The M60/MILES can be operated in temperatures f rom -35°C (-31ºF) to 62ºC(144°F) . I t p e r m i t s t a c t i c a l s k i l l s t o b e p r a c t i c e d u n d e r r e a l i s t i cc o n d i t i o n s .

T h e l a s e r t r a n s m i t t e r s e n d s h a r m l e s s , invisible laser (light) beams toward thet a r g e t . I f t h e l a s e r b e a m h i t s t h e t a r g e t , d e t e c t o r a s s e m b l i e s o n t h e t a r g e tsense the beam, an cause an a la rm to sound. In add i t ion , i f the ta rge t i s av e h i c l e , a n e x t e r n a l l y - m o u n t e d l i g h t ( C V K I ) o n t h e v e h i c l e w i l l f l a s h .

How it Works

T h e M 6 0 / M I L E S w o r k s m u c h l i k e a r e a l M 6 0 m a c h i n e g u n . H o w e v e r , i n s t e a d o ff i r i n g l i v e a m m u n i t i o n , t h e M 6 0 / M I L E S f i r e s b l a n k a m m u n i t i o n a n d a h a r m l e s sl a s e r ( l i g h t ) b e a m a t t a r g e t s .

The targets wear Man Worn Laser Detectors (MWLD) equipped with laser detectora s s e m b l i e s a n d a l a r m s . W h e n a l a s e r b e a m f r o m a t r a n s m i t t e r s t r i k e s aso ld ie r ' s MWLD, an a la rm sounds . T o s h u t o f f t h e a l a r m , t h e s o l d i e r m u s tremove the ye l low key f rom h is weapon t ransmi t te r and pu t i t i n to a recep tac leon his MWLD. W i t h t h e k e y r e m o v e d f r o m t h e t r a n s m i t t e r , i t w i l l n o t o p e r a t e .R e m o v i n g t h e w e a p o n s ' c a p a b i l i t y t o f i r e a l a s e r b e a m s i m u l a t e s a c o m b a t"kil l".

The M60/MILES operator wears a harness equipped with a laser detector assemblya n d a l a r m . I f o p p o s i n g f o r c e s f i re a MILES-equ ipped weapon a t you, theM60/MILES operator, one of two things wi l l happen:

• Your MWLD alarm sounds for one second. T a k e c o v e r ; a " n e a r m i s s "has been scored on you.

• Your a la rm sounds con t inuous ly . Y o u h a v e b e e n " k i l l e d " . Use yourye l low M60 weapon key to shu t o f f the a la rm.

O n c e t h e a l a r m s o u n d s , the weapon key mus t be le f t i n the MWLD assemblyharness. I f i t i s r e m o v e d , t h e a l a r m w i l l s o u n d c o n t i n u o u s l y . W i t h t h ew e a p o n k e y r e m o v e d f r o m t h e t r a n s m i t t e r o f t h e M 6 0 / M I L E S , i t w i l l n o l o n g e ro p e r a t e .

How The M60 MILES Is Used:

A f t e r t h e M 6 0 / M I L E S t r a n s m i t t e r a n d M W L D h a v e b e e n i n s t a l l e d a n d t e s t e d , y o uw i l l b e r e a d y f o r t h e t r a i n i n g e x e r c i s e .

• To beg in , a t tach a b lank- f i re a t tachment and load the M60 w i th b lankammunit ion.

• Turn the t ransmi t te r ye l low weapon key to the ON pos i t ion .

• Aim and f i re. The laser t ransmit ter wi l l operate unt i l you run outo f b lank ammun i t i on .

Limitations of Equipment:

T h e M 6 0 l a s e r t r a n s m i t t e r h a s t h e s a m e r a n g e a n d o p e r a t i o n a l c a p a b i l i t i e s a st h e M 6 0 m a c h i n e g u n , b u t a d i r t y l a s e r t r a n s m i t t e r l e n s m a y r e d u c e t h ee f f e c t i v e r a n g e o f t h e t r a n s m i t t e r . T h e M 6 0 / M I L E S t r a n s m i t t e r w i l l " k i l l " o u tt o a r a n g e o f 8 0 0 m e t e r s , a n d p r o v i d e s s u p p r e s s i v e f i r e i n t h e f o r m o f " n e a rmiss" indicat ions to a range of 1100 meters.

TASK 2 Inspect and CleanTransmitter

1. G e n t l y r e m o v e a n y d i r t o r o i lfrom the lens with a lenspaper o r so f t c lo th .

2 . Make sure the foam microphonecover is dry and not cakedwith dirt or blank-fireresidue.

3 . C h e c k f o r d a m a g e t h a t w o u l dp r e v e n t n o r m a l o p e r a t i o n o fthe transmitter.

Repor t any damage on DA Form2402. Replace transmitter.

MAKE SURE TRANSMITTER IS SEATED PROPERLY ON BARREL.

TASK 6 Align the Transmitter

T h e S m a l l A r m s A l i g n m e n t F i x t u r e ( S A A F ) i s a l a s e r d e t e c t i n g d e v i c e t h a t i su s e d t o a l i g n y o u r w e a p o n ' s s i g h t s w i t h t h e M I L E S t r a n s m i t t e r .use the SAAF al ignment target, you must:

• Set up the target at a range of 25 meters from the firing point.

1 . Install three BA-200/U batteries.

2 . Turn Power Switch ON.

3 . Set Weapon Switch to M60.

Alignment Procedure:

The M60 transmit ter can be al igned in ei ther blank-f i re or dry-f i re mode.

NOTE

To pu t your weapon in d ry - f i re mode, see the nex tpage.

If your weapon is in blank-fire mode, be sure it is loaded with blankammunit ion.

• Adjust the sights:

a . Set range to 500 meters.b . Set w indage to zero .

NOTE

A one-second alarm means a "near miss", cont inuousalarm means you have been "k i l led".

TO TURN OFF ALARM AFTER A "KILL":

1. Remove the yel low weapon key from your M60 transmit ter.

2 . I n s e r t t h e k e y i n t o k e y r e c e p t a c l e o n t o r s o h a r n e s s a n d t u r n k e y t os i l e n c e a l a r m . I f y o u r e m o v e k e y f r o m r e c e p t a c l e , t h e a l a r m w i l l s o u n da g a i n .

TO RESET MWLD:

1. Ask your NCOIC to ca l l the Con t ro l le r .

• Unload your weapon.

1. Remove M60 transmit ter f rom M60 barrel (See Task 4).

2. M a k e s u r e t h a t y e l l o w w e a p o n k e y i s i n t r a n s m i t t e r .

3 . Remove t ransmi t te r ba t te ry and c lose door (See Task 3 ) .

4 . Do Task 2: I n s p e c t a n d c l e a n t r a n s m i t t e r .

5. Remove blank-f i re at tachment f rom M60.

6 . Make sure you have al l your equipment (See Task 1).

7 . Retu rn a l l MILES equ ipment , a n d b l a n k - f i r e a t t a c h m e n t , t o i t s t r a n s i t c a s ef o l l o w i n g t h e i n s t r u c t i o n s o n t h e n e x t p a g e .
