“My degree was absolutely crucial in getting my career. I currently work with creative teams to bring advertising ideas to life. It gave me a great understanding of thefundamentals of filmmaking.” Sian Finnis: Studied Film Production – currently Senior Producer for an advertising agency

Designed by industry for industry, our courses have been created to suit the needs of a range of creative sectors to provide you with the skills and experiences that will help launch a career across many areas of the media and beyond. It has been an exciting and dynamic year for the department of Creative & Digital Technologies as we settled in to our new building and exciting industry standard, commercially relevant, creative facilities. Most importantly we have seen some incredible student work emerge, building on the successes of recent graduate projects. Those making their way into industry are also gaining a foot in the door of their chosen career paths, with Sports Media graduates securing jobs with ball tracking technology company Hawkeye and on BBC training courses. Digital Film Production students have been picked up as Editors for broadcast documentary company Big Wave and to work on adverts with Director Tim Pope. Film students also gained vital work experience on ‘Blackbird’ a major feature film shot at nearby West Wittering beach. Directed by Roger Michel, with a cast including Kate Winslet, Susan Sarandon and Sam Neil, the 5am November morning call times revealed some of the true ‘glamour’ of making films! Our first 3D Animation & VFX cohort welcomed Faraz Hameed, Visualisation Supervisor from The Third Floor previz company, as a guest speaker. Faraz has huge experience in this area and has worked with Christopher Nolan (Dark Night Rises), Peter Jackson & Steven Spielberg (Tin Tin – Secrets of the Unicorn), and Tim Burton (Sweeny Todd), to name just a few.

Media students had the chance to attend Games Expo EGX in Birmingham and Comic Con London, whilst our screenwriters enjoyed a masterclass with one of the UK’s most influential drama executives John Yorke. Most recently some of our MA students enjoyed assisting Professor Stephen Baysted on recording his score for a new and exciting computer game being released later in the year. The recording was our first commercial activity in the new facility and was led by conductor Andy Brown and the extraordinary players from the internationally renowned London Metropolitan Orchestra. We are also very excited by our move into gaming related courses such as our new pioneering Esports programme and, in 2020, a new interdisciplinary Games Design degree. We have had great support from industry in developing both of these highly relevant courses as the demands of the creative industries for well trained graduates’ increases, as those industries evolve in to new directions as technology gets faster and more powerful. This brochure covers many stories from the past year and includes details of just some of the experiences our students are exposed to as they develop knowledge and understanding of their chosen subject area, and most importantly the skills in great demand across the creative industries.

Staff profile

Matt Jacques

98

The University’s new Oscar and BAFTA award-winning visual effects artist Matt Jacques has worked on some of the biggest blockbusters of the last decade - and is now teaching a new generation of VFX stars at the University of Chichester. Our newly-appointed senior lecturer is best known for his prized work on hit sci-fi films Interstellar and Inception, which have received Oscar and BAFTA awards. He also lists the Harry Potter franchise on his CV, alongside Marvel movie Thor: The Dark World, and the latest James Bond epic Spectre. After more than ten years spent behind the scenes, bringing to life some of Hollywood’s highest-grossing films, he has turned his talents to teaching on the University’s new BA (Hons) in 3D animation and visual effects at its £35million Tech Park. “I’ve always wanted to teach,” he says, “and am incredibly excited by the Tech Park’s unique ability to offer students an experience of working across all areas of filmmaking. I don’t know any other university that offers that in one place.”

Matt spent more than a decade developing feature films and television at the internationally-acclaimed VFX facility DNEG. It was here that he refined his craft and helped the British motion-picture company collect five Academy Awards and another five BAFTA awards. An avid Tolkien reader as a boy, he says he always harboured ambitions of one day working with iconic visual directors, such as Peter Jackson. Matt adds: “There weren’t many opportunities in VFX in the early 2000s so, when I was 17, I did a traditional apprenticeship in film and cameras for Vogue magazine. My love of film and television art grew from there.” Matt’s first role was a job with celebrated visual-effects company Framestore, where he designed the squirrels for Tim Burton’s 2005 reboot of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. “It was ground-breaking work at the time because we were among the first to use CGI to create the animals.” Soon after came his first big breakthrough: a senior role at DNEG, where he credits some of his proudest work on two films: Interstellar and Inception, both from acclaimed director Christopher Nolan. “Working with Chris Nolan is incredibly rewarding because he has such innovative ideas,” he adds, speaking about creating Interstellar’s famed tesseract scene, starring Matthew McConaughey’s journey through time and space, which won an Oscar.

“A lot of people think that visual effects are all done in the USA, but the reality is that the UK has a thriving VFX scene with the best artists in the world.” Now teaching visual effects within our University’ department of Creative and Digital Technologies, Matt is situated in the state-of-the-art animation labs housed at the Tech Park. The new BA (Hons) in 3D animation and visual effects is designed in close-collaboration with industry professionals to prepare students for a career in one of the UK’s fastest-growing sectors. Attracted by the proposition of developing the new course, Matt’s decision to leave Hollywood for the classroom wasn’t taken lightly. “I heard that there was something big going on the south coast – so I met up with Max Tyrie BAFTA-winning animator leading the degree programme at the Tech Park to see for myself, and was astounded at its incredible facilities and opportunities to learn.” Speaking of his approach to teaching his students, Matt adds: “We work on developing a range of technical craft skills, starting from the basics and working to high-level specialisms so that the students can enter the industry - whether that’s in film, television, or videogames – at a very high standard.”

Red River Horror-thriller Red River won Best Short Film for its bold plotline of a concentration camp escapee’s pursuit of a former Nazi solider. The short, which is just 11 minutes in length, received the accolade at the Eclipse international film festival at Pasadena in California. Writer and producer Tim Wickens, from the BA (Hons) in Digital Film Production and Screenwriting degree at Chichester, said the award was a reward for the hard work the student team put in together. He added: “We were surprised to win as we had a relatively small budget but it is gratifying to know that you can achieve anything with hard work. The production, which also received a nomination for best actress at the festival, was a collaborative effort between as many as 35 students from the first, second, and third years of the University’s department of Creative and Digital Technologies. It was funded by the undergraduates themselves who raised nearly £8,000 through part-time summer jobs and financial contributions from online crowdfunding. First assistant director Abigail Godfrey, who worked with lecturers and industry professionals to plan the project from concept to production. She said: “It was so important to make the most of the facilities at Chichester and the contacts we made on the film because, once you step out of university, you are on

your own in one of the world’s most competitive industries. Since graduating I’ve worked on several feature films in Shepperton and having the experience of working on Red River has been really beneficial.” Director Harry Jones said: “Red River is something I and my fellow filmmakers wanted to show to the world that if you have the drive, resources and passion for filmmaking no matter what your situation or starting point, anything is achievable.” For more about the Red River film, including its trailer, go to www.facebook.com/RedRiverShort/

Synchronicity Synchronicity has recently been screened at film festivals within the UK and is progressing out into other European countries. This LGBTQ+ short has received its first laurels from festivals including the ‘12th for Rainbow – Festival of Sexuality Diversity, Culture and Film’ which was held in Brazil. This production was solely Written, Produced and Directed by Kerry Matthew, from the BA (Hons) TV & Film degree at Chichester. She mentions ‘without the continuous support and guidance from not only my core course lecturers, but from the surrounding Digital Film and Production team, I would not have been able to drive my vision and creativity to successfully project my film onto big screens. I am very grateful for the solid crew who supported my passion for filmmaking, and I hope I have inspired them and more individuals to throw themselves into the deep end, and dive into the world of production, even if it seems out of your depth’. Entering Synchronicity into more Festivals this year, Kerry has already completed two more short films with The University of Chichester. Generating loyal bonds with the current filmmaking students who aided on her film, she was asked to come back and help on their dissertations. Cured Alongside these two excellent student films, the latest Trundle Film to be screened on the international festival circuit is ‘Cured’. Directed by Darren Mapletoft, produced by former CDT student and NFTS graduate Emma Clarke, from a screenplay by Michael Holley, ‘Cured’ adds a few twists to the familiar ‘Cabin in the Woods’ horror film staple and marks the brief acting debut of iconic British film director Tim Pope. In the past year Cured has been officially selected for the Encounters International Film Festival, Winchester International Film Festival, Heart of England Film Festival, Spooky Empire's International Horror Film Festival, Videoscream International Film Festival, MedFF, Milwaukee Twisted Dreams Film Festival, Panama Horror Film Festival, Cinematic Panic, Summer Scream Fest and was a Finalist: Los Angeles Independent Film Festival Awards, Semi Finalist: Los Angeles CineFest & Festival of Terror. As with all Trundle Films, ‘Cured’ is a collaboration between staff, students and industry associates, and offers all student crew an IMDB profile to build upon as they develop their career aspirations.

“The course gave me the opportunity to be engaged with both the pre-production and production side of a professional shoot.” Tim Wickens, BA (Hons) Digital Film Production & Screenwriting

Filming The Source Our first department film production in the Tech Park took place in November/December 2018 in Stage 1. The Source is the latest short film from the department’s research group Trundle Films and is Directed by Programme Coordinator for Digital Film Production & Screenwriting Darren Mapletoft from a screenplay by Head of Department Michael Holley. Many other staff members headed departments alongside our industry associates with cinematography by Cliff Harden, score by Stephen Baysted and Post Production supervised by Steve Couch. Legendary Gaffer Chuck Finch (Harry Potter franchise/Darkest Hour/Justice League) brought his team along to light the film, and joined other veterans of the British film industry including Production Manager Kathy Sykes (Mamma Mia/Inspector Morse), Script Supervisor Penny Eyles (The Queen/Gosford Park/Brazil) and 1st AD Cordy Hardy (Yardie/Silent Witness), in providing on set training to a wide range of students drawn from our Digital Film Production & Screenwriting course and

our Screen Acting & Creative Technologies course. The shoot lasted 8 days and operated to strict industry working practices as students got a real taste of a professional drama shoot. Working with a range of industry partners has long been the philosophy for Trundle Films, as has engaging with local creative companies. For the The Source we recreated a 1920’s pub interior with a set built and installed by production design company History in the Making. Darren has driven the Trundle Films project for many years now as it continues to provide a deep, experiential learning environment for our film production students, “Seeing how fast they learn and how this experience fuels ambitions for their own films makes it all worthwhile. The opportunity the students have to learn from, and network with, some of the key crafts people in the British film industry is unique and has led to the start of a few careers with students invited to work alongside their industry mentors post graduation.” The story connects to many other narratives explored in previous Trundle Films within the sci fi and time travel genre. Previous Trundle Films utilising the same industry partnership approach include Submerged, My Name is Georgina, Cured, Tumulus and The River.

Throughout the year staff and students have had the pleasure of inviting industry guests to meet us and travelling far and wide to meet them. SPORTS MEDIA STUDENTS MEET STEVE WILSON BBC Match of the Day commentator Steve Wilson talked about his career with University of Chichester Sports Media students. Steve began commentating on Match of the Day in 1999 after spells at Capital Radio in London and BBC Radio 5 Live. Alongside his work as one of the key commentators on the world’s longest-running football television programme Steve has commentated on two Olympics, three African Nations Cups and six European Championships. In 2018 he was the BBC’s lead commentator for the FA Cup final that featured Chelsea and Manchester United and later that summer covered his sixth World Cup for the broadcaster in Russia.

Steve shared moments from his commentary on Brazil’s 7-1 defeat to Germany in the 2014 World Cup semi-final with the students and explained some of the challenges commentators face. His commentary for this dramatic match was heard by a BBC 1 audience of over 14 million. He also involved the students in a number of sports journalism activities, including preparing bulletins for 5 Live with the major sports stories of the day. Steve’s session was part of the Sports Media Industry Talks series organised for students throughout the year. He said, “It was great to meet the next generation of sports journalists at the University of Chichester. A talented bunch!” Other speakers to work with students in this series include 2015 broadcast journalist of the year Mike Costello, the BBC athletics and boxing correspondent; presenter, journalist and commentator Matt Chilton who has worked at every summer and winter Olympics since 1992 and is well-known for his coverage of skiing, triathlon and tennis; Vivien Morgan, a pioneer in video and mobile journalism; Sam Mason, previously at Chelsea TV and Sky Sports but now working for television sport graphics company Reality Check Systems; Tom Bristow, an online sports writer for the Mirror; and Andy McMenamin from Pearce International who specialise in media operations at the world’s largest sport events.

PODCASTING As the department prepares to start its own podcast in 2019 with Dr Adam Locks and Thomas H. Green, we partnered up with another podcast show – Cinematologists – and its co-founder and host Dario Llinares (University of Brighton). The format was a screening of the film Her (Spike Jonze, 2013) followed by a post-viewing discussion with an audience of students and staff. The Cinematologists was started in 2015 by Dr Llinares and Neil Fox (University of Falmouth) to bring fans, filmmakers, critics, and academics together to watch, discuss, and engage with cinema of all forms, genres and eras.

The podcast has developed a loyal following of fans including the Observer’s chief film critic, Mark Kermode. Our own department will be using the podcast format to discuss film, television, music, and other areas of the media.

“The course is fundamental to gaining experience within the industry, and as such I had the pleasure of working for the BBC. Upon leaving the University, my knowledge was more than enough to set up my own media company.“ Marc Farrell: Studied Film Production

SO FAR WE'VE HEARD FROM: John Yorke (Executive Consultant and screenwriter): John Yorke has run both BBC and Channel 4 drama (Head of Drama Ch. 4 2003 and Controller of Drama Series BBC 2005). Amongst other highly successful dramas, Yorke was Executive Producer on Wolf Hall, The Missing and Land Girls. His commissions include Shameless and Life on Mars, and overseeing other shows such as Holby City, Waterloo Road, Spooks, and The Street. Recognised for his unique achievements with East Enders as Executive Producer, he introduced storylines that saw the show’s ratings sore intermittently between the years 1999 and 2017. Outside of television production, Yorke also authored the best seller: Into The Woods: How stories work and why we tell them. The book studies story and draws extensively from Yorke's own research and experience, using examples from projects such as EastEnders and Spooks. Neil Marshall (Director and Producer): The horror/fantasy director first made a name for himself with the cult horror Dog Soldiers followed by The Descent, a film now considered a classic of the genre. Since working in America, Neil has directed key episodes of Game of Thrones, Constantine, Hannibal, Westworld and the eagerly awaited Netflix series, Lost in Space.

Adam Smith (Film, music and television director): 2017 saw the release of Adam Smith’s debut feature film, ‘Trespass Against Us’, starring Michael Fassbender and Brendan Gleeson, a crime drama set in the traveller community, but he is, perhaps, best-known for 20 years working with global electronic dance music superstars The Chemical Brothers. He directed four scene-setting episodes in the first series of controversial teen drama ‘Skins’, and was behind the ‘Doctor Who’ episode ‘The Eleventh Hour’, which introduced Matt Smith as the 11th Incarnation of The Doctor. Laurie Borg (Producer): Adam Locks interviewed the producer of the hugely popular series Black Mirror Laurie Borg. Laurie has also produced televisions series Peaky Blinders, as well as the hit films Sense and Sensibility and Little Voice.

Laurie Borg – Honorary Doctor of Arts In 2018 the Department of Creative & Digital Technologies nominated Laurie Borg for the award of Honorary Doctor. Laurie is an extremely significant producer in film and television. He began his career working with producer David Lean for a number of years and has since worked with notable figures including Alan Parker, Stephen Frears, Emma Thompson, Stephen Woolley, Neal Jordan, Ang Lee, Kit Harrington, Tom Hardy, Helen McCrory, Cillian Murphy, Lindsay Doran, Hugh Grant, Jane Horrocks, James Nesbitt, and Charlie Brooker. His career continues to rise exponentially having recently won an Emmy for one of his episodes for the cult Netflix series, Black Mirror. What is particularly impressive about Laurie is that he no longer approaches television or film companies; they always come to him to help produce highly significant television series such as Peaky Blinders, Black Mirror, Gunpowder, and Occupation for which he received a BAFTA (He is unusual in having first started in film, and then moved to television.). Laurie was interviewed by the department in 2017 and will be returning soon to speak with staff and students.

Roisin Carty – International Dialect Coach Victoria also invited world leading ‘dialect coach’, Roisin Carty to work with Chichester’s acting students. In 2016, a short film, called Speed Date, Victoria, Roisin and renowned film director, Tim Pope, helped the students to devise, direct and produce the project over 2 semesters. Entered for international film festivals in the ‘experimental’ category, the film has been winning a selection of awards – including ‘best ensemble acting’. Roisin who has worked with directors Peter Jackson, Ridley Scott, Ron Marshall and Robert Zemeckis, has also worked on the The Lord of The Rings Triology, Casino Royale, Kingdom of Heaven and has just finished Tim Burton’s Dumbo and Wonder Woman 2.

This year, in her busy schedule Roisin made time, to come and meet Chichester’s new Screen Acting & Creative Technology Degree students! Quoting Tolkein’s ‘Elvish’, Roisin led an inspiring Master Class enlightening students to the process a film actor takes when approaching dialect. She says how essential it is to ‘tune in’ to each actor’s needs, ‘some actors prefer to listen and repeat and some actors who are are more visually minded, preferring to look at diagrams that show where the sounds and shapes first form. The students were interested to hear how, also, Roisin uses ‘activities’ in her teaching. She exampled how she once had to teach a Spanish actor English, and had them kneading bread as they spoke to stretch their vowels! Such work the ‘screen acting’ students at Chichester are look forward to experiencing!

Victoria Scarborough – guest of the Swiss film festival, R7AL It’s not every day of the week you find yourself high above the Alps in Switzerland in a helicopter pressing elbows with actor Christopher Walken. But that is exactly what happened to actress and Programme Co-ordinator, Victoria Scarborough last March when she was invited to be a professional guest of the Swiss film festival, R7AL. Established by Swiss actor/director Vincent Perez, he wanted to create a unique platform for people, both from the industry and otherwise, to come and discuss movies in the beautiful and picturesque town Lausanne, on the banks of Lake Geneva. Christopher, whose credits include ‘The Deer Hunter’ and Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Pulp Fiction,’ very generously gave Victoria some time to discuss ‘screen acting’ for the students of Chichester, as did other actors and directors including Barry Levinson (‘Rain Man’), Darren Aranofsky (‘The Wrestler, ‘Black Swan’ ‘Mother!’) Thomas Vinterberg and actress Bérénice Bejo (‘The Artist`). Each gave Victoria their thoughts and ideas, and with over ten Oscars between them, who better to ask? Each actor interestingly brought their own

approaches, ways of doing their work - all great advice and nuggets of gold for our students to learn from - but all agreed the essence of what they did contained these important ingredients: hard work, ambition, technique. All of them were very interested and excited to hear about Chichester’s work, too, and felt what better way to begin for a young actor. From a personal perspective, having been a working actress for many years, Victoria states it was great to to discuss movies and exchange ideas with such people, and indeed to realise other qualities they all had in buckets, which are essential for any actor and creative artist: modesty, open-mindedness and just sheer passion for their art form. She returns again to Lausanne this coming March, now as a ‘founder member’ of the R7AL, and again will be spreading word about the work at Chichester and doubtless filming some more interviews.
