Measured Drawings

To obtain the measured drawing of the fan , i first took a photo of the fan birdeye view as it lays horizontally followed by tracing the photo to get a rough idea of the fan’s shape . Then , using meter rule , the length of the fan stick is measured to obtain a accurate measure as well as the width of the stick . The expanded fan height is also obtained using the same method . The stick behind the paper are also indicated on the draw-ing to allow a better understanding of the stick to the paper connection .

This measure drawing was obtained by placing the opened fan on a flat surface and viewing it at parallel eye-level to the middle of the structure . This drawing shows how not all the sticks open out parallel to the X-axis but instead some of them are at an angle to the X-axis (ie. skewed downwards) as the height of the end of the sticks are differ-ent to the height at the beginning of the stick(middle). The height again is measured using metre rule.

SECTION (FOLDED) // SCALE 1:2

The section of the fan drawn represents a signle fold of the fan stick+paper viewed at 90degrees prependicular to the length of the stick . As the the fan fold was in bundle , it was necessary to forcefully fold the other parts of the fan to allow a single view of the fan fold . The angle of the fold was noted down by using protractor and ruler extended from the fold to the degree shown . The protractor is placed parallel to one of the side of the fold .

Analysis

The hemisphere shaped bit act as pivot as it goes through all the fan sticks which keeps all the sticks together when the fan is in its closed position .The Top and bottom stick are also thicker compared to others as they’re the one pulling others along thus stronger and bulkier in comparison .

The pivot is the main structural feature of the fan as it allows the the fan sticks stacked ontop of each other to open up by rotating out as if a fleet of rotating stairs . For this fan , it opens by pulling the top stick to the right and the following sticks follows as the paper glued to the stick pulls it along .

However , one thing i have noticed is that the higher fleet of the rotating sticks are slightly slanted downwards as theres no support for the other end of the stick , thus making the end point of the stick to be almost the same for every fleet of the stick when the fan is opened . Therefore the whole stretch of the paper of the fan almost appears to be on same level.

The combination of the pivot sticks and the paper folds is what makes the fan design possible . Without the sticks , the paper folds would be harder to open and keep back in . Without the paper , the pivot sticks would be rotating 360degrees . With preset length of the paper and the folds done before , it ensures the stick to only extend till within 180degrees . If extra force is exerted on the stick to crank it open , the fold of the paper fan would flatten out more rather than folds .

Digital Model

ELEVATION

1.the method used to construct the digital model is by scan-ning the measured plan drawing done previously and placing it in the Rhino to be traced .

2. Because of the repetitive elements of the fan , only one single element is built accordingly using pline , crv .

Then arraypolar is used to create the repititive ele-ment in a rotation with set angle and with z offset so that it rotates with decrement in height for each repiti-tion of element.

i used an A4 paper to represent the folds of the paper fan . Repeated foldings were done to obtain the folds creases.

Through the class in week 2 , exploration of the hexagon shapes plane , i’ve noticed how making a few cuts at the edge ridges allows for greater possibility in folding the plane , thus the ridges are cut with pen knife .

With the opened possibility of foldings within the folding of the plane itself , a for-ward bending fold is made possible by folding towards the front as well as pressing down the side of it as it flares out or to possibly cut it too.

The sense of brute strength through medieval knight resemblance reminds people not to mess with them for what they represent,nobility in sleep.

An aggresive headpiece that wards off peace-destroyers and to keep distance whilst bringing comfort and confidence to wearers .

An inspiration of curly wavy protection and enclosure based on the mythical Medusa.

This design draws the closest similarity to the reconfigured figure . using the fan opening design , cuts at the ridges and foldings at the end, an headpiece that is able to cover the features of the face for privacy , as well as intimi-dating those who dares comes close . At the same time , looking good with it is also key .

Inspired by the knight’s helmet that keeps the knight’s identity protected while instilling fear to the enemy for the uncertainty of what they might bring.

A pattern made on paper with slices made at an interval and then folding the middle to obtain the point end at the middle , which may cause the side of the paper to curl and change shape.

This uses the idea of face mask protection from everything as well as total privacy it provides . At the same time , vision was not sacrificed . The pattern of cutting lines at the folds are again utilised to obtain the design.

MECHANISM

For my third design , again using the same con-cept for my reconfigured model , i’ve utilise how the fan paper could be further manipulated by cutting lines on the ridges allowing for greater angle of foldings . In this case , the stripes of paper are placed at the back of the person , and when needed for personal space , it can be employed by folding the outermost paper to the front and connecting both left and right arm of the paper folding . The continuation of the subsequent fold-ing will allow the the front folding to stack up onto each other acting almost as a barrier or a pillow depending on the amount of foldings . The fold-ing to the front also shows a love sign . The design provides utility purposes.

The design allows changing levels of personal space required , and the enveloping of the person provides a sense of being sur-rounded like a nest .
