Reading

1 Put the paragraphs of the story in the correct order 1-4.

A In the boat, Trish and Josie were very frightened. They were sitting holding each other when Josie stood up and started screaming ‘Help!’ ‘Sit down, Josie,’ Trish shouted. ‘You’ll fall in!’ She tried to pull her sister down but another wave came at that moment and Josie fell over the side of the boat into the sea! She couldn’t swim and she was going underwater! Trish didn’t know what to do, but then the lifeguard came up behind Josie and caught her under her arms. He lifted her back into the boat and then he pulled the boat back to the beach. They were safe.

B Last weekend, Dave, his two younger sisters and his parents went to the sea. It was a bit windy but it was a nice sunny day. When they got to the beach, they put on their swimsuits. Mum and Dad sat down on the sand and the children took the boat down to the sea. It was a small plastic boat, big enough for three children. Dave, who was thirteen, helped his sisters Josie, seven, and Trish, eight, into the boat and he pushed it into the sea.

C Dave shouted to his parents and waved his arms in the air. The lifeguard who was sitting in his chair on the beach looked up to see what was wrong. He started running down the beach to the sea. Dave’s parents also ran down to the water. They were calling the girls’ names but there was nothing they could do. The wind was taking the boat away from them. The lifeguard ran into the sea and started to swim towards the boat.

D The girls laughed and waved to their parents on the beach. There were other people in the sea and they looked at the little girls and smiled. They were having a great time! Suddenly, the wind blew strongly and a big wave took the boat out to sea. Dave couldn’t hold it because the wind was very strong. The boat was going out to sea with the girls in it!

2 Now choose a title for the story.

a A silly mistake

b Danger at sea

c Three children in a boat
