MY

K

By M. A. SADANAND

NO HOLDS BARRED

“Nairobi and I”.To me, Nairobi, capital of Kenya in East Africa, was God’s

gift to my parents. They would celebrate this happinesseach time the stork brought a new bonny family member,by distributing chocolates to the neighbours.

Probably that is why I, at 83, still love ‘Cadbury’. Myfather, who was Secretary to the Post Master General ofKenya, Uganda and Tanganyika which the British hadannexed, celebrated the birth of each gurgling arrival bythrowing an expensive party, mother had told me.

The climate was cold, but folds of woollen blankets con-trolled the sleep pattern of the kids.

After my third birthday, a handsome younger brother,Chandrakanth, entered our lives. He was born to live for funand was the life of our family. He was a cheeky brat unlikeme, and full of mischief, a trait which ended his life in ahospital in USA when his speeding car plunged to terra firmafrom a flyover.

Over the years, my parents, my two sisters and theirhusbands went off to keep company with my handsomebrother, and I hope they are all in India in places they liked.

Not to be outdone, my wife Lakshmi too accepted theirinvitation last February and joined them through the vehiclecalled ‘cancer’, leaving me, at 83, to appeal to the Fellowupstairs who, for want of a better superlative, is called ‘God’.That is the joke of the century, for Jaya, who is asleep nextto MGR at the Marina shrine, is laughing her head off.

There is nothing good or bad in life except how one looks atit. That Modi’s brainwave brought that Rahul Gandhi guy tothe stage is a sure lesson on the usurpation of the good bythe bad, as most alleged politicians are wont to, for noise isa polemic, especially if one is not sure of the stand which iscorrect and conscienable. Some right-headed people call itnoise.

Let us not pollute in the name of BhogiSir, In spite of warning and advice by Government authorities, public

burn trash consisting of old clothes, used tyres and plastic materialsin the name of Bhogi celebrations on the eve of Pongal.

This drastically increases air pollution causing health problems forall, especially those suffering from asthma related ailments. Further, the effect lasts almost a week depending on the extent of pollutioncaused. I appeal to the readers of Mambalam Times not to burnhousehold items in the name of a tradition and, instead, donate themto needy institutions like orphanages and old age homes. Construction of walkers’ path in playground thwartedSir, A move to construct a walk-

ers’ path inside the playgroundopposite Dr. Natesan Park, G. N.Chetty Road, T. Nagar, wasthwarted by the regular visitors tothe playground and nearby resi-dents. The playground is popularamong the youth who play gameslike volleyball, football, badmin-ton and cric-ket. The playgroundalso has a free Corporation-rungymnasium. All of a sudden lastweek, a government contractorunloaded construction materialsand started to lay a walkers’ path. When the users enquired with thecontractor, he did not divulge de-tails but stated that a walkers’path is being made ready. Thelocal residents and office-bearers

Garbage bins block carriageway

of the playground’s Badminton Association met the local MLA with anappeal to stop the work. The work was given up the next day. Accordingto a nearby resident, there is no need for a walkers’ path in the playgroundas the facility is available in Dr. Natesan Park. “Improving the infrastruc-ture in the playground is welcome, but a walkers’ path is unnecessary anduncalled for. The playground has been developed for playing outdoorgames and there is no need for a walkers’ path in it”, he said. The Associationand residents have thanked the local MLA for intervening in the matterand getting the work stopped. This is not the first time that the playgroundhas been targeted. Some years back, there was a move by the then govt.to convert the playground into a shopping complex. The local residentstook legal recourse and the Supreme Court ruled in favour of the residents.T. Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association, 30, Rangan Street, T.Nagar

Sir, Two garbage binskept at the junction ofGiri Street andThambiah Road areblocking the carriage-way causing difficultyfor motorists and pedes-trians. It is a busy junc-tion and it would bebetter if the bins aremoved a little away fromthe junction. It can beseen from the picturethat garbage is dumped around the bin leading to unhygienic conditions.I have contacted the officials concerned several times with a request tomove the bins, but no action has been taken so far. I appeal to ChennaiCorporation officials to immediately move the bins away from the junction.Devarajan, Thambiah Road, West Mambalam

Dumping axed trees in playgrounds hazardousSir, The large num-

ber of trees andbranches that toppledover during the cyclone, have been axed andtemporarily dumped inCorporation play-grounds. Almost threeweeks have gone by andthe trees are still lyingin most of the play-grounds. It is hazardousas there is a likelihood of a fire. In a number of places there are residencesor offices close to the playgrounds and a major fire could spread to adjacentbuildings if not contained in time. Also, the fire can add to the alreadyexisting levels of high air pollution.

In a couple of playgrounds, a warning notice has been pasted outside, cautioning public not to set fire to the branches or throw cigarette butts.

I appeal to the Corporation officials for early removal of the axed treesand branches from playgrounds and safe disposal.

The playgrounds in 1st Main Road (Nandanam), Raghavan Colony(Jafferkhanpet), Somasundaram Street (T. Nagar) and Anna Main Road(K. K. Nagar) have been used as dumping yards. R. Saravanan, LakeView Road, West Mambalam

Impending water crisis in ChennaiBy Our Staff Reporter

Chennai is staring at a severe water crisis in the coming monthsfollowing a 23% deficit in the northeast monsoon.

According to Metrowater officials, the water in the reservoirs mayfeed the city for a month or so. As the combined storage level in thePoondi, Chembrambakkam, Red Hills and Cholavaram reservoirs isjust 14% of the total capacity of 11,057 million cubic feet (tmcft), theauthorities have brought down the daily quantum of water supply inthe city from 830 million liters (ml) to 550 ml.

They are banking on the arrival of Krishna water from AndhraPradesh and if 2,000 tmcft is realised, Metrowater can sustain 550 mldsupply till the summer with the support of other sources such asdesalination plants and groundwater, an official in the water agencysaid.

Met officials said that a system that is likely to form near theAndamans may give Tamilnadu a pass and move towards Myanmar,as the winds that would steer such systems are now moving in anortheasterly direction. “Chennai will continue to see dry weather andthe temperature will be a minimum and maximum of 24 and 31 degreesCelsius,” said S. Balachandran, Director, Area Cyclone Warning Cen-tre, Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai.

The desalination plants in Minjur and Nemmeli, which togetheraccount for a quarter of the city’s water supply, are struggling to reachtheir maximum capacity of 100 mld each since cyclone Vardah hit thecity. According to PWD officials, the much-awaited supply of Krishnawater from Andhra Pradesh, which flows into Poondi reservoir throughthe Poondi-Kandaleru canal, may be delayed further.

The lack of rainfall over the past year is not only drying up lakes butalso having a severe impact on the groundwater levels in the city.
