NOTES ON THE MORAL CRISIS – (A resp onse to Eu gene Pre scurea ) - Mircea Vulcanes cu NOTES ON THE MORAL CRISIS - A response to Eugene Prescurea By Mircea Vulcanescu In a letter addressed to Paul Sterian on July 28, 1927, Eugene Prescurea was pointi ng to his friends from Pa ris, a problem, in the following terms: 1. “Lately, a lot w as written an d mos tly tal ked abo ut a moral cr isis. There is not an individual who calls himself an intellectual without pronouncingthese words in fashion. We all agree in our statement, that a moral crisis exists.” 2. “When the time comes to be more specific in what is all about – and to define it- there is no agreement…” 3. “This f act ma kes yo u wond er if it is o r not a moral crisis .” Also, he is adding some more questions that were asked, regarding this crisis, which will be included in a thorough review on this topic, and I will transcribe them here for the use of those further interested in a response. 4. “Omi tt in g th e circ umst ance s of th e pl ace and time , is th e moral cris is a downgrading of the morality below an average level, as well as if it is pre- existent or established...?” 5. “Maybe i s the ch aos, t he inse curity, o f a so ciety be ing dis oriente d, leavin g one kin d of mo ral it y and being pus hed toward a dif ferent on e, unk no wn andmisunderstood…?” 6. “Can we mak e an analogy with the wo rd in me dic al wor ld or economy, in order to circumscribe the meaning of the word - Crisis – from a moral point ofview?” 7. “ In that case when the moral crisis means - sinking below a certain average level of morality…”, we ask the subsequent questions: a. “What is t he ave rag e level ?” b. “Has been lowered i n time? I s it h igh er no w?” c. “Wha t was t he le vel ri ght b efo re thi s chan ge oc curr ed? ” d. “Is it compared wit h the ideal for m of Chr istians, taught by Jesu s Christ?” - In this case, this world has been in a continuous moral crisis. e. “In a wa y, if we ad mit t he exi ste nce of a s uch ave rage l evel , idea l andabsolute… with the moral and social crisis being an exceptional andpatholo gical fact , but no more then a differ ence of nuances o r intensity, is the term of cri sis fals e?”…”We re not the gl or ious time s of the
