College courses in manufacturing technology are taught using

“traditional” methods

Focused on in-class lecture

Minimal / basic use of online resources and industry-like

technology

Instructor is a lecturer

Courses heavily integrate online learning elements, beyond basic usage of a Learning Mgt. System

Focus on hands-on assessment

Labs are equipped with advanced technologies to allow students to practice & study on their time

Mentor-like engagement from instructor (incl. real time remediation)

NATIONAL MODEL: ONLINE AND TECHNOLOGY ENABLED

Coursework is more closely related to the technologies that they’ll see at work, reducing on the job training time

Students become familiar with using online learning tools, and develop skills to become better self-directed learners

Diversity of course delivery methods keeps students engaged in the learning process

NATIONAL MODEL: IMPLICATIONS

PREFERRED STATE:

• Learning is self paced (more tailored to fit students’ needs)

• Instructors lecture less, and are more available to the student for mentor-like engagement

• Students can self-remediate and revisit recorded lectures and resources for better understanding and clarification

The HFC ControlLogix courses were examined against the MSAMC Master ControlLogix PBO List, and there was an Ethernet gap in HFC’s offerings

ControlLogix trainers were enabled with Ethernet technology, but it was not used

ControlLogix courseware has been expanded to include Ethernet Switches

Allows for PLC to PLC communication

Students’ education uses technology that is more aligned with industry

BEFORE: ControlLogix Gaps NOW: ControlLogix + Ethernet

LOCAL SICC EXAMPLE: HENRY FORD COLLEGE – CONTROLLOGIX + ETHERNET

Inclusion of Ethernet in courseware can be relatively cheap, if trainers already have Ethernet switches

• Ethernet is the most state of art platform for distributed I/O, so the college is more in line with what industry uses

• The college can add additional, compatible input and output devices, allowing them to grow labs in ways that they hadn’t been able to consider before

NOW: ControlLogix + Ethernet

The HFC ControlLogix courses were examined against the MSAMC Master ControlLogix PBO List, and there was an HMI (Human Machine Interface) gap in HFC’s offerings

ControlLogix trainers were enabled with HMIs, but they were not used

ControlLogix courseware has been expanded to include HMIs, and Siemens HMI touch panels have been added to the trainers

Students in the ControlLogix courses programmed the HMIs themselves

Allows for PLC to PLC communication

Students’ education uses technology that is more aligned with industry

BEFORE: ControlLogix Gaps NOW: ControlLogix + HMIs

Low cost improvement

Classroom technology is now closer to the plant floor

Students can exercise PLC logic in ways that they couldn’t before, E.g. Instructors have always discussed how mathematical instructions can be

applied, but there haven’t been good examples. Now, HMIs can be used to utilize mathematical instructions in a practical way.

LOCAL SICC EXAMPLE: SPARTANBURG COMMUNITY COLLEGE - ONLINE & TECH ENABLED

• More online content used by instructors in PBO format

• Used in all classes for independent study & remediation

• National Performance Based Objectives (PBOs) guide learning management methodology

BEFORE: Some Online Content NOW: Focus on Online Content

• Some online courses used in Automated Mfg. Technology

• (Basic & Enhanced) in the L.O.R.I. (Learning Object Repository)
