DID YOU KNOW?Former Mount Union wide receiver Pierre Garcon is in his rookie season with the Indianapolis Colts. Garcon, a sixth round draft pick (No. 205), ranks among NFL rookie leaders in kickoff return yards. He also has 12 special teams tackles this season. This week Garcon and the rest of the Colts play Thursday night at Jacksonville.

UW-Whitewater is part of the state school system in the state of Wisconsin. The University of Wisconsin in state is refered to as UW-Madison. Whitewater is a little over 40 miles southeast of Madison and UW-Whitewater has 10,700 students and Division III’s largest football stadium in the 13,500 seat Perkins Stadium.

Including the regular season finale at Marietta, Nate Kmic has 1,263 yards and 18 TD’s rushing over the last five games.

Mount Union’s defense has held 10 opponents under 200 total yards this season.

This week Mount Union is playing its 14th game on an artificial surfrace. The regular season game at Otterbein was the only one on natural grass.

This game features two coaches coaching at their Alma maters as Larry Kehres is a 1971 Mount Union graduate and Lance Leipold is a 1987 UW-Whitewater graduate. They are two of eight teams in the bracket that are coaches by alums.

For the second week in a row the opponent has a former Purple Raider on staff. Jim Zebrowski is a 1991 Mount Union grad and is in his second season as the offensive coordinator at UW-Whitewater.

NCAA DIVISION III NATIONAL CHAMPIONS 1993, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006

THE COACHESLarry Kehres (Mount Union ‘71) is 274-21-3 (.924) in his 23rd season at his Alma mater. Kehres is one of the most successful coaches in all of college football, as under his tenure, the Purple Raiders have claimed 19 Ohio Athletic Conference championships, including the last 17 in a row and nine of the last 15 NCAA Division III National Championships.

Lance Leipold (UW-Whitewater ‘87) is 27-2 (.955) since taking over at his Alma mater in January of 2007. In his first season as head coach in 2007 he led the Warhawks to a WIAC and National Championship picking up AFCA Division III National Coach of the Year honors. He was a quarterback for the Warhawks and had assistant coaching stints at UW-Whitewater, Wisconsin and Nebraska-Omaha.

THE SERIESThis will be the sixth meeting between the schools with Mount Union holding a 4-1 edge in the series. The teams have met in each of the last three Stagg Bowls with the Raiders winning 35-28 in 2005 and 35-16 in 2006 while the Warhawks won in 2007 31-21. The teams have also played a pair of regular season openers in 2002 and 2003 with Mount Union winning 44-21 in 2002 in Wisconsin and 40-17 in 2003 in Alliance. SCHEMES Mount Union will come out in a multiple pro-set formation on offense and a 4-2-5 on defense, while UW-Whitewater employs a multiple pro-set on offense and a 4-3 on defense.

MOUNT UNION CAPTAINSSeniors in defensive back Daryl Ely (Winter Springs, FL/Winter Springs), running back Nate Kmic (Delta/Delta), quarterback Greg Micheli (Upper Sandusky/Upper Sandusky) and linebacker Chas Yoder (Martins Ferry/Martins Ferry) were selected by their teammates as captains for the 2008 season.

SCOUTING THE WARHAWKSUW-Whitewater returns to the Stagg Bowl after replacing a host of key players from a year ago and has a running back that has come on strong in the playoffs ... sound familiar.

The Warhawks won on the legs of 2,000-yard back Justin Beaver and his 249 yards. This year, Beaver, along with 16 starters, are gone but a pair of runners have taken his place. Freshman Levell Coppage (1,471 yards and 21 TDs) and sophomore Antwan Anderson (1,114 yards and 11 TDs) pace the Warhawk offense. Coppage has had eight 100-yard rushing games this season, while Anderson has ran for 684 yards in the NCAA Playoffs. Quarterback Jeff Donovan adds balance with 15 touchdowns and 2,419 yards passing. His favorite target is Aaron Rusch, who has 1,054 yards on 77 catches, with six touchdowns receiving.

On defense, Wisconsin-Whitewater is just as good as they were last season when they held Mount Union to a season-low 21 points. It was the fewest points the Purple Raiders had scored since Oct. 21, 2006. This season they are allowing just 12.2 points per game. A big reason for that is do-it-all linebacker Jace Rindahl. He is second on the team with 98 tackles, leads the team with five interceptions and 8.5 tackles-for-loss.

STREAKSMount Union has the best winning percentage and most wins in all of college football since 1990 (244-11-1/.954). The Raiders also hold the NCAA’s two longest consecutive college football win streaks -- 55 games from 2000-2003 and 54 games from 1996-99. Mount Union currently holds the nation’s longest active regular season win streak at 33 games.

TURNOVER IMPORTANCESince 1996, the Raiders are 95-0 when winning the turnover battle. Since 1990, Mount Union is 140-1 when winning the turnover battle with that lone loss coming in the 1995 NCAA Playoff semifinals in a 20-17 loss to Wisconsin-LaCrosse. In that game, the Raiders had a +1 turnover margin.

He is the nation’s top rated passer with a 208.8 passer rating. Micheli has completed 75.7-percent of his passes (228-of-301) for 3,481 yards and 34 TD passes with just two INT’s.
