TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACKN. C. VASANTHAKOKILAM - 2

(The Good Samaritan’s family came to know about it all andmarried him off quickly and the relationship came to a sad end! However he kept in touch with his pal and met her now andthen as ‘just friends’! )

Vasanthakokilam too got married but sadly the marriagedid not last long. Ambitious and her goals clearly set, she badeher husband goodbye and pursued her career with devotionand tenacity. The poor man set up a modest restaurant -called‘Coffee Club’ in the Thanjavur district lingo and idiom - inThiruvaiyar, the famed small town associated with the musi-cal savant, the legendary Saint Thyagaraja Swamigal. When-ever Vasanthakokilam came to that town for music concertsduring the popular Thyagaraja Aradhana celebrations, hewould shut shop and vanish from that town. He did not wishto be in the same town as she even if it was only for a day!

With her fame slowly but surely rippling out, she set hersights on cinema and knocked on its doors. By then M.S.Subbulakshmi had come into movies and become a star andcult figure. With MS making waves can NCV be far behind?

Enter a person of persuasive-plus charm and some clout inthe fast-growing Tamil Cinema, C. K. Sachi. Hailing from afamily of noted and successful lawyers of Coimbatore, C. K.Sathasivan (Sachi, for short) was drawn to the new medium ofcinema and he sailed into it with glee and gusto. He gave uplaw and learnt the rudiments of filmmaking and also under-went some limited training in London. A man of wide contactsin Madras in its social and cultural circles, he worked asAssociateDirector with the noted American Tamil filmmaker,Ellis R. Dungan in his historic maiden movie ‘Sathi Leelavathi’(1936) produced by the Coimbatore-based producerA. N.Maruthachalam Chettiar. Chettiar had already produced thebox-office bonanza directed by Manik Lal Tandon, ‘BhamaVijayam’ (1934), in which the Carnatic music legend that stilllives undiminished long after his demise, G. N.Balasubramaniam (GNB), took his bow in movies as SageNarada. Dungan’s ‘Sathi Leelavathi’ created history and manynew talents made waves and forged ahead to conquer peaks offame and fortune. The roster included the Gemini movie mogulS. S. Vasan as story-writer, later day starsM. K. Radha (of‘Chandralekha’ fame!), T. S. Balaiah, and last but not theleast, the man of destiny, deified leader of Tamils, cult figureand all, M. G. Ramachandran (MGR)!

Sachi also directed ‘Radha Kalyanam’ (1935) with the hand-some, well known musicologist and musician S. Rajam as LordKrishna and Tamil film star M. R. Santhanalakshmi in hermaiden movie, as Radha.

Sachi entered Vasanthakokilam’s life with bells on andbecame her patron, protectorand much more, and promotedher as singer-actress. In 1940 he produced a much-talkedabout movie ‘Chandragupta Chanakya’ in whichVasanthakokilam looked stunningly seductive as a blue-blooded princess. Her makeup materials came from Londonand her costumes were made by expert tailors of Madras andBangalore. Indeed Sachi gave her such a new ‘Hollywood look’that many found it difficult to recognize her in the movie!

Directed by ‘C.K. Sachi, B. A., B. L’ as he styled himself inthe credits, this movie had singing actor Bhavani K.Sambamurthi as the figure of early Hindu history, the famedKing Chandragupta Maurya, and noted character actor of theday, S. D. R. Chandran, as the legendary Chanakya describedby historians as the ‘Indian Machiavelli’. Vasanthakokilamplayed ‘Chaya’, a princess who fell in love with the historichero. The film was shot at Kali Film Studios, Calcutta.

Vasanthakokilam sang songs in ragasNavarasa Kannada,Hindustani Asaveri, Hindolam, Karaharapriya, Behag and athree-voice song with two others in Malhaar. But the film sankwithout trace soon after release and is hardly rememberedtoday.

‘Ganagavathaar’ was produced at Sundaram Sound Studio,Adayar (later Sathya Studios owned by MGR) and directed bySachi. It had an impressive cast with NCV as Ganga, singingstar and ‘Narada of Tamil Cinema’ Nagercoil K. Mahadevan asBhagirathan, and a star of yesteryears, C. V. V. Panthulu, asLord Shiva and T. M. Damayanthi as Parvathi . The excellentsinger known as ‘K. L.. Saigal of South India’, P. G. Venkatesan, played Narada. It also had a fine array of comedy artistes likeKali N. Ratnam, C. T. Rajakantham, T. S. Durairaj, M. R.Swaminathan, P. R. Mangalam and T.V.A. Poorani.

Vasanthakokilam sang songs in Hindustani Surutti, Kalyani,Karaharapriya, Mayamalavagowla and Misrakapi. The filmdid fairly well mainly due to its music and NCV’s songs. Sachipresented her with glamour using special hairstyles and all!

‘Venuganamwas another mythological film built aroundLord Krishna with Vasanthakokilam in the lead role as‘Mitravinda’, one of the wives of Krishna. It was directed by apioneer of Tamil Cinema, regretfully forgotten today,Murugadasa (Muthuswami Iyer) and scripted by that ne-glected genius of Indian Cinema, K. Ramnoth. The well knownGemini Studios screenwriter, Ki. Ra. ( K. Ramachandran)wrote the dialogues and the lyrics were by the Sri LankanTamil poet who was active in Tamil cinema in the bygonedecades, ‘Kamabadasan’. G. Govindarajulu Naidu, a notedfilm music composer of that day scored the music.

Delay in receipt of flood relief amountSir, This letter has been written in the com-

mon interest of the residents of K. R. KoilStreet, West Mambalam, which comes underWard 140.

This street was among the worst affectedduring the floods in December.

The residents incurred heavy losses as theylost most of their belongings. Many vehicles gotdamaged as they remained submerged in wa-ter for several days.

The State Government announced flood re-lief of Rs. 5,000 for each family affected by thefloods. In this regard, government directed theRevenue Department to conduct a door to doorsurvey in the affected areas and collect thedetails like name and bank account numbersfor crediting the relief amount directly to thebank account.

But, unfortunately, when the verificationwas done on our street more than 110 houseswere left out.

When, in spite of several reminders, theauthorities did not complete the survey on ourstreet, the left out residents submitted detailsdirectly to the Taluk Office. But till date therelief amount of Rs. 5,000 has not been creditedto the bank account of any resident.

I appeal to the authorities concerned to lookinto this matter and disburse the amount with-out further delay.

I also request to the authorities to verify thatthe amount earmarked for the residents hasnot been misused. - S. Gopinath, Socialworker, West Mambalam.

EPIC forms not accepted in pollingbooths

Sir, This refers to the special camps thatwere held during the last two weekends toupdate voters’ list in polling booths.

The Election Commission of India is spend-ing crores of rupees to update the list at regularintervals to increase the voter base, but thereis laxity on the part of employees in implement-ing it.

Since the zonal offices are tied up with sev-eral other services, steps should be taken toaccept all forms in respect of voters’ list at the

polling booths. Appli-cation for the issue of‘Replacement ofElector’s Photo Iden-tity Card’ (Form IDECI-EPIC-001) is notbeing accepted at poll-ing booths in spite ofEC’s direction to ac-cept all forms relatedto the voters’ list. Theform is accepted onlyon weekdays between10 a.m and 12 noon atthe zonal offices whichis difficult forofficegoers.

It is my experiencethat ever since my sonattained the age of 18,from 1996 assemblyelection onwards, hehas been submittingforms to get his EPIC(though allotted as perthe official list pub-lished) which is yet tosee the light of day.

As political partiesare giving voters’ slipat the time of election,he has been voting inevery election, withoutthe help of EPIC. S.Muralidaran, K. K.Nagar
