By Our Staff ReporterAn accident involving a po-
lice Tata Sumo (TN 67 G 0509)and a Santro car (TN 09 S6800) caused a traffic jam nearAranganathan Subway, WestMambalam at 10 a.m on Feb.24.
According to witnesses, theTata Sumo bumped into thecar. Both the vehicles stoppedwith the front bumper of thepolice van and the rear bumperof the car locked. When the
Police van-car mishap causes traffic jam
driver of the police van reversedthe vehicle, a portion of thecar’s bumper got dislodged.
The police driver refused toget out of the vehicle and ar-gued that he was not at fault. The angry car driver blamedthe police driver for the acci-dent and said he was in a hurryas he was taking someone tohospital. Policemen deputed atthe spot to keep an eye on theChief Minister’s birthday cel-ebrations did not interfere.
The deadlock ended with aSub-Inspector apologizing and
persuading the car driver toleave.
Asserting that Chennaimust give up building flyoversin favour of large investmentsin dedicated bus lanes, bicycletracks and pedestrian walk-ways, Janette Sadik-Khan(New York Transport Commis-sioner) has said that “Invest-ments made by city adminis-trations must improve thequality of life of residents”.
“The strategy of making itas easy as possible for cars togo as fast as possible has out-lived its usefulness. Prioritisingpublic transport is going to bethe hallmark of a great city inthe 21st century. And Chennaihas a real chance to leapfrogpast the mistakes that west-ern cities committed,” she de-clared.
Following a series of meet-ings with Tamilnadu Govern-ment officials, Janette saidthat Chennai must also seri-ously consider implementing aBus Rapid Transit System. “Apriority bus lane is the mark ofeffective cities. Buses movemore people, so they should getmore priority than single per-sons driving by themselves. Itis very important and it can bedone quickly and inexpen-sively.”
Sharing New York’s experi-ence, which until 2007 recordedthe lowest public transit bus
“T. Nagar can do a Times Square”, saysNew York expert
speeds in the United States, she said that introducing aSelect Bus Service that oper-ated on a dedicated lane hasgiven ‘great returns”.
“The dedicated bus lane hasincreased ridership by 30% andhas an approval rating of 98%among New Yorkers,” Janettesaid.
Chennai is a very excitingcity, she said. “But there aretraffic and growth challenges. It is really important for thecity to take a different view ofhow the streets are used. Wewere able to close down trafficflow into Times Square andturn into a pedestrian plaza.Chennai must do the same inareas such as T. Nagar.
There is incredible energy inthe streets here, but the city
has to protect pedestrians. Anetwork of bicycle tracks alsoneeds to come up”. In New York, once walkways and bicyclelanes were installed, the num-ber of people getting injured orkilled in road accidents droppedby over 30%, she added.
Amanda Burden (New YorkCity Planning Commissioner),who accompanied Janette, said that the city must also dosomething about the riversthat are ‘polluted beyondwords’. “They have to be re-claimed for public use. In NewYork, we have built 328 acresof waterfront parks. Now, forthe first time in decades, NewYorkers feel it is a waterfrontcity. It has really made a differ-ence”. Report: courtesy TheHindu

NO HOLDS BARREDBy M. A. SADANAND
“All work and no play makes the Gowda gang dull boys”,says an aphorism, rebelling against which SadanandaGowda’s triumvirate of ministers went viral and importedfor the nonce, through their cellphones, real flesh andblood entertainment during the assembly session, thefirst known entertainment since Adam and Eve gam-boled in their lascivious innocence in the garden of Eden!
The trio could have snored their way through the boringsession, but chose to be true to their daily allowance bymarking their presence in the assembly and imbibing thepleasures of sight, sound and sex aplenty supplied by 2GSpectrum for the benefit of mankind.
Let us laud the three musketeers with “Hip, hip, hurray”,one each, and hope that other law-making bodies wouldsupply porn-laden cell phones to their suffering legisla-tors to fight somnolence while the boring drivel is on in thehouse.
It wouldn’t be a bad idea to replicate the assuagingtouch to demolish boredom in court halls too, wherelawyers suffer from others’ word-diarrhoea held forth forhours on what usually merits a mere five-minute argu-ment. General Singh versus Minister Anthony is theclassic illustration which took 4+ hours to argue that itwas 1950, and not 1951, that was the birth year of theformer. People outside the Court could have heard theracket inside for hours and the waiting lawyers probablywore ear plugs all the while. A sneak peek at a cell- phoneporn-clip would have lessened the ennui of the otherlawyers awaiting their turn to get justice .
“You have drifted 3000 miles away from Vidhan Saudhato the Supreme Court to stress your point that people foulup the air by too much orality and not much morality, right?”, Sanjay Pinto of Hindu TV, who has assumed thenew role of a lawyer, asked me.
“On the dot, Sanjay. Be a lawyer first and always, butnot an advocate who is the mouthpiece of the bloke whopays you!”
