Aula Paraninfo – Plenary

Javier Melgarejo Draper El Sistema Educatiu Finlandés: La formació del professorat

d’educació primària i secundària

En aquesta plenària analitzarem el funcionament del sistema educatiu finlandès, tot aprofundint en la selecció inicial dels mestres, la formació acadèmica i les practiques del professorat com a fets diferenciadors en l’èxit del mòdel finlandès.

ROOM 1 – Infants & 1st cycle Primary

Roisin O’Farrell Have you got rhythm?(3 to 7-year-olds)

We’ll be looking at songs, chants and phonics from course books, adding actions and other special touches that will help them work in the classroom. Be prepared to sing along, and join in!

Connie Hatwell Flashcard games in the Infants classroom(3 to 5-year-olds)

With growing classroom numbers and limited resources and with the added pressure for teachers of very young learners to introduce English as an integral part of the curriculum, the need for activities that are easily put together with the minimum of preparation time and that stimulate the interest and channel the abundant energy of young children is greater than ever. In this very practical session, I will demonstrate a range of flashcard activities that are designed to engage our youngest learners as well as develop their linguistic skills.

ROOM 2 – 2nd & 3rd cycle PrimaryMark Ormerod It’s not just reading practice

(8 to 12-year-olds)What can pupils do with a text? They can read it, of course. They can also think about, interpret and talk about it. They can learn from it. They can play games and have fun with it. They can change it and personalise it. They can present it as part of project or a performance. There’s so much our pupils can do with texts in class that it’s a shame to label them as just “reading practice”. In this session, we reconsider texts as a tool for learning, with a focus on developing the whole child.

Encarnación Romero & Eulàlia G Muñoz Bárcena Yoga and teaching attitudes:

harmonizing the classroom atmosphere (8 to 12-year-olds)

In this session, we will reflect on three moments experienced in the classroom where yoga serves to show the significance of our teaching attitude. We will explore how we can bring physical, mental and emotional awareness to bear on our classes in order to harmonize and help us manage our classes and thus create a positive relationship between ourselves and our pupils.

ROOM 3 – Bilingual

Joanne Ramsden Practical science (6 to 7-year-olds)

Providing a classroom that is rich with opportunities for hands-on science can give rise to a more meaningful learning experience. In this session we will be looking at ways that children can take an active part in science through experiments, games and fun.

Jade Stevens Steps to arts and crafts in English(6 to 7-year-olds)

The arts and crafts classroom provides an excellent context in which to develop key competences and skills. Teaching arts and crafts through English will nurture our pupils’ artistic and creative intelligence, develop their awareness of the world around them as well as improve their linguistic abilities. In this session, we will explore how these skills and abilities can be systematically and effectively developed through a series of practical, hands-on activities that will engage and motivate our youngest learners.
