PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
Greetings
National Engineer’s week is February 16-22. According to the organization
Discover E:
“The engineering community celebrated Engineers Week beginning in
1951, when the National Society of Professional Engineers initiated it.
For the next several decades Engineers Week programs were local,
disconnected, and mostly focused within the profession.
In 1990, the Foundation and Bechtel Group launched "DiscoverE," the
first formal national call to engineer volunteers for engagement in K-
12 education, partly in response to government studies showing future
shortages in engineering talent.”
The Duluth Section holds the Annual Toothpick Bridge Competition for high
school students each February in celebration of E-Week. It is our biggest
student outreach event of the year. It’s an exciting competition, with lots of
young energy and ideas. I encourage our Duluth Section members to volunteer
at the event this year and help foster the excitement for engineering in our
region’s youth.

ASCE DULUTH SECTION BOARD MEETING MINUTES
January 30, 2014
LHB, 21 W Superior St, Duluth, MN
Board Members present were Lisa Karlgaard, Tom DesMarais, David Franseen, Matt Nordine, Nick Patterson
and Art Johnston.
The meeting was called to order at 4:35. A quorum was present.
Younger Member Report: (Tom D.)
Tom, Dave and Nick attended a student meeting to meet current students. There will be an effort in the
near future to combine younger member and student activities to increase the amount of younger members
within ASCE after graduation. Tom is still planning on a younger member event at Spirit Mountain depending
on the weather. Tom will send out an announcement for the upcoming P.E. review sessions.
Toothpick Bridge: (Lisa K.)
Volunteers are still needed for the toothpick bridge competition from approximately 8-Noon on the day of
the competition.
Membership Update: (All)
Dave will need an updated membership list before sending the February newsletter. Matt will make sure
that past membership articles and documents have been added to the section’s eRoom.
Section Records: (Art J.)
Art and Cindy have compiled the section’s records down to a single banker’s box. Art supplied the board with
a list of the archived reports remaining. Art outlined recommendations on how to file the remaining records.
Art is willing to sort out and continue the archiving effort. The board will continue to discuss and evaluate
best methods to archive files and how we want to scan and file relevant files digitally. Art will update the
board next meeting on his ongoing progress. Art is willing to look into why the Aerial Lift Bridge is neither a
Minnesota nor National Historical Engineering Landmark.
Treasurer’s Report: (Nick P.)
There is $2,118.48 in checking and $6,964.48 in savings, not including this month’s lunch receipts. The UMD
lunch meeting was the most profitable to date. The board had loses of $434 in 2011-2012, $1,156 in 2012-
2013 and is budgeted to lose approximately $500 this year. Next meeting we will discuss declining revenues
along with the amount we are charging for section dues. Nick will send the board the current budget before
next meeting.

Central Region Conference: January 10-11, St. Louis MO: (Matt N., Tom D. and Nick P.)
Matt, Tom and Nick attended the 2014 Multi-Region Leadership Conference from January 10-11 in St. Louis,
MO. They will include an article on the conference for the upcoming newsletter. They will submit receipts
from the trip and present costs from the trip to the board at next month’s board meeting.
Speakers and Section Meetings: (All)
The board will contact Cindy to get clarification on the topic title for the February lunch presentation.
Newsletter Report: (Dave F.)
Newsletter items are due February 5.
Next Board Meeting is scheduled for February 27th at 4:30 pm at Pickwick.
Meeting was adjourned at 6:17 pm.

TIP #1 -- Get Connected to ASCE Pre-College Outreach. Like us on Facebook and receive updates throughout
Engineers Week!
TIP #2 -- Acquaint yourself with DiscoverE. Same programs – different look! DiscoverE includes all the familiar
programs and resources that volunteers leverage to get kids interested in Engineering. Check out their new web-
site, AND their new makeover!
TIP #3 -- Help us recognize special volunteers at the ASCE Multi-Regional Leadership Conferences. Submit a
nomination form with the name of one volunteer from your Section/Branch who deserves special recognition. We
will recognize him or her at the ASCE Leadership Conferences awards luncheon, and also send your volunteer a
Starbuck's gift card to express our thanks during Engineers Week! Deadline for submission is Fri., Jan. 3,
2014. (Maybe Next Year…)
TIP #4 -- Order themed posters to celebrate Engineers Week and Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day.
FREE posters are available through [email protected]. (Limit one EWeek and one Girl Day kit per request.)
TIP #5 -- Order National Engineers Week resources from ASCE and DiscoverE. Free and low cost resources
are now available online from ASCE or in the DiscoverE online store. (How is support of “the mission of engineer-ing” a part of engineering? How do you connect with E-Week?)
TIP #6 -- Adopt the Engineers Week theme in your informational campaign. Print and Web graphics for your
newsletters, programs and other communications are available for use: (How can we use those images to support future engineers…what do you think? Tell your board.)

TIP #7 -- Share the theme with engineering companies and agencies for Websites, in their newsletters, on
banners, enclosed with employee paychecks, or on signs or table tents in the lunchroom. (Are you active on a per-sonal level or a company level?)
TIP #8 -- Organize pre-college outreach activities.
Get advice and tips from staff at [email protected]…(Or ask your board about what tips they’ve gotten…)
Order activity guides, handouts, pencils, stickers, bookmarks and other free or low cost resources for your
next event online.
Check out ASCE’s all new 100+ Civil Engineering Activities for kids of all ages. All online and all categorized by
age, outreach setting materials and time needed.
Have volunteers wear a promotional t-shirt indicating their special role in bringing hands-on engineering to
students. Include the DiscoverE logo on the shirt.
Treat outreach volunteers to a unique ‘Thank you’ or special recognition for their participation or give them a
raffle ticket and enter them in an end-of-year drawing for their continued enthusiasm. Let them know how
much you value their time and contribution.
TIP #9 -- Recognize local volunteers as part of Engineers Week.
(Do we need to recognize the people who have volunteered more loudly? ...THANK YOU!...not enough? Tell us how you’d like to see it.)
TIP #10 -- Hold an Engineers Week banquet or luncheon to honor volunteers. (Is April too late to recognize the efforts of E-Week, or other vounteers? Tell the board why you volunteered, or haven’t yet volunteered.)
3.) Nominate someone for the Duluth Section ASCE Board:
(2015 is closer than you think...)
February is E-week. And as an engineer, I hope that we’ll have more activities to support the next generation of potential engineers in E-week at a local level. How did we become engineers after all?
4.) Be a volunteer for the Toothpick Bridge Event. You might learn a thing or two about
engineering...

We are still looking for Toothpick Bridge Volunteers.
Its simple, fun, and is few less hours of winter…If nothing else, come check it out for an hour.
Its February 26th from 9:00-1:00.
It’s at the UMD Civil Engineering Lab. Easy to find on campus...we have our December meeting there.
What we’ll ask you to do: watch students scoop sand, weight buckets of sand, record results, register teams,
smile and enjoy.

2014 Multi-Region
Leadership Conference
St. Louis, MO
January 10-11
Matt Nordine, Tom DesMarais and Nick Patterson attended the
2014 Multi-Region Leadership Conference at the Hilton St. Louis
at the Ballpark in St. Louis, MO on January 10th and 11th.
The conference consisted of a Workshop for Section and Branch Leaders, a Workshop for Student Chapter
Leaders and a Younger Member Council meeting. Participation in the conference strengthens and expands
the programs and activities of Sections and Branches through the interchange of ideas, information and ex-
periences, while it exposes incoming officers to the tools needed to be effective leaders.
This conference is organized and developed to provide each participant a personal growth opportunity. Par-
ticipants learn more about ASCE, available resources and opportunities for service. It was an opportunity to
learn more about ASCE, meet the regional and national leadership, make new contacts within ASCE and de-
velop new ideas on how to improve the Section and Younger Member Group.
An objective of the conference is to strengthen and expand the programs and activities of each Section or
Branch through the interchange of ideas and information on timely and important subjects of vital concern
to the Society and their local communities. It also prepares incoming officers for their leadership roles.
The workshop gives each participant an opportunity to interact with ASCE’s Society level Officers, Region
Governors, other Section/Branch Officers, Students and Younger Members, and staff.
In the Workshop for Section and Branch Leaders, a session topic of particular interest was the session on
the ASCE resources available through the Geographic Services Department of ASCE. The session men-
tioned the best practices guide that each section should refer to for ideas other sections have used in the
past, free webinars through ASCE.org that includes five free PDH’s, the ASCE champions services, and sec-
tion services provided through national that is available for each section or branch.
The Younger Member Council provided many opportunities to interact with and learn from other Younger
Members. Primary discussions and ideas were transitioning students to younger members, keeping them in-
volved in local activities, and providing a resource for engineering assistance when necessary. After a much
discussion and an official resolution it was determined by the Younger Member Council to recommend Chica-
go as the host city for the 2016 Multi-Region Leadership Conference. Minneapolis came in a close second,
and was recommended as an alternate site. To end the conference the Younger Member Council visited the
St Louis Arch. This was extra special being around many civil engineers and visiting this engineering marvel.
