TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

G. RAMANATHAN - 27One of the big hits of G. Ramanathan, the Tamil movie

music maestro, inthe late1950s was ‘ChakravarthiThirumagal’ (1957) in which many of his compositions becamehits, some of them still being remembered after more thanhalf a century - the hallmark of success, popularityandintrinsic value in movie music.

Interestingly, the Indian movie icon and multitalentedstarM. G. Ramachandran was just making his way to reachthe top and become a cult figure of recent Indian history. Inone single year1957, he acted in as many as four movies -‘Chakravarthi Thirumagal’, ‘Mahadevi,’ ‘Raja Rajan’ and‘Pudumaipithan’.

‘Chakravarthi Thirumagal’was directed by Pa.Neelakantan who soon became close to MGR and directedhim in more than 17 films with many of them becoming hits.Written by the first star writer of Tamil cinema, Elangovan, based on a story by the forgotten screenwriter P. A. Kumar, this film had Anjali Devi as the female lead, supported by S.Varalakshmi, P. S. Veerappa, N. S. Krishnan, T. A. Mathuram,K. A. Thangavelu, T. P. Muthulakshmi, Lakshmi Prabha andveteran character actor E. R. Sahadevan.

G. Ramanathan’s tune-rich music was well supported bythe lyrics of a galaxy of poets - Thanjai Ramaiah Das,Pattukottai Kalyanasundaram, K. D. Santhanam,Subramania Bharathiyar, Ku. Sa. Krishnamurthy, Ku. Ma.Balasubramaniam, and ‘Clown’ Sundaram.

The film had intimate scenes between MGR and AnjaliDevi, which thrilled the moviegoers of the day.

A folklore about kings, queens and princesses, the film wasproduced by RM. Ramanathan Chettiar, one of the investorsin the then active Newtone Studio, in Kilpauk. Madras.

Promoted by the well-known art director-filmmaker F.Nagoorand supported by his professional colleagues, notedaudiographer Dinshaw K .Tehraniand cinematographer JitenBannerjee, this studio was financially supported by thesuperstar and legend of Tamil Cinema, M. K. ThyagarajaBhagavathar. Ramanathan Chettiar, a close friend of MKT,was one of the financiers. A rich Naattukottai Nagarathharfrom Chettinad, he was interested in sound recording and satat the sound mixer, recording the sound and mixing the tracks. In some movies, his name was credited as the audiographer.Besides, he produced movies like this one under his bannerUma Pictures.

In this movie, a king arranges three competitions for youngmen seeking the hand of his lovely princess (Anjali Devi) anda prince (MGR)wins the competitions and weds her. Earlier, the princess and her companion (Varalakshmi) go horseridingand, by sheer chance, they happen to meet the hero. Theprincess, who does not reveal her identity, falls for him, andso does her friend. The friend is ambitious and plays many evilgames to get her dream man. However, her designs areexposed and after many interesting events, the couple areunited in happy wedded bliss.

The film had as many as 12 songs, some of which becamepopular. A song and dance sequence ‘Aadavaanga annaathey…asanji nikiira annaathey, ange ingeyy paakiratheyennaathey!’ sung off-screen by Sirkazhi Govindarajan, Jikkiand P. Leela became popular. It had words like ‘gummaalu’and the song became a hit. MGR danced well and did somestunts while the villain (Veerappa) tried to trap him during thesong and dance sequence. E.V. Saroja, slim and shapely, andG. Sakunthala, buxom and attractive, were the dancers andSaroja’s movements were excellent.

One song by S. Varalakshmi expressing her disappointmentover her failure in love for the hero (MGR), ‘Emmatramthanaa en vazhviley’ in the rare classical Carnatic raga‘Kurinji’,too became a big hit. Sohanlal and Thangarajchoreographed the dances by E. V. Saroja and G. Sakunthala.

The cinematography was by noted lensman V.Ramamurthi. One of his assistants was Karnan who laterrose to become a successful cinematographer and producer-director, making ‘curry westerns’ featuring Jai Shankar suchas ‘Ganga’ and ‘Jambu.’

One of the assistant directors credited as ‘Mohan’ rose tobecome a successful filmmaker under the name MohanGandhi Raman. He was also active in the south Indian filmworkers movement and hailed from a family of CongressParty loyalists.

The film was successful at the box-office.More hit movies for the music maestro were to follow.

Erikarai crematorium beingupgraded to work on gas

By Our StaffReporter

Erikarai cre-matorium is be-ing upgradedinto a gas-basedone.

A ChennaiCorporation offi-cial said thatpollution controlboard norms arebeing followed.“It will have a30-metre chim-ney and a scrubber, which purifies the smoke before releasing it,” hesaid. “The work will get over in a month,” he added.

Volunteers at risk during traffic awareness campaignsSir, I am a 77-year-old retired pilot of Indian Air Force and a

qualified and experienced flight safety officer and aircraft accidentinvestigator. It has become common nowadays for privateorganisations, NGOs and schools to conduct traffic awareness cam-paigns at busy junctions in the city. Though such initiatives arewelcome, volunteers need to take special care to ensure their safety.I am referring to the photo of Thozhan volunteers conducting such acampaign published in Mambalam Times in its edition dated March7-15. The picture taken at a traffic signal shows a youngster in asquatting position pasting a black sticker on the headlight of avehicle in the middle of the road and a group of young womenstanding in front of vehicles and displaying placards. There areinherent dangers in such practices. The drivers tend to accelerate assoon as the signal changes to green and the volunteers may not haveenough time to move out of the way. Even if one driver loses control,it can lead to a major accident. It is a safer practice for the volunteersto stand to the sides and hold placards. Similarly vehicles should bedriven to the road margin and switched off before pasting stickers. The volunteers should wear reflective clothing so that drivers can seethem from afar. It is also better if the volunteers work in conjunctionwith traffic personnelduring such cam-paigns. I appeal to theorganisers of suchcampaigns to ensuresafety norms duringsuch campaigns. I alsoappeal to the trafficdepartment to pre-scribe and ensureimplementation ofsafety norms beforegiving sanction to suchcampaigns. – Com-mander E.A. Mur-thy (Retd.), Thani-kachalam Road, T.Nagar
