INFORMATION
With all short stories, it’s more about what ISN’T said, versus what is.
The author leaves information out of their work in order for the reader to infer (figure out on their own).
Every short story (and short short story) have all elements from the plot diagram.
EXAMPLES
Perspective by Colin Campbell
“I think it’s easy to see, my students, that by careful examination of these former inhabitants, of their behavior patterns, their simple, pointless lifestyles, the things they held of import, and of the complete and utter corruption of their selves and environment, that Earth deserved no better than Galactic extermination. Thus, us. Any questions?”
EXAMPLESThe Land of the Free by Steve Kelly
From their bench, Buzz and Little Joe take in the activity of boardwalk life.
“A little of everything, eh?” Buzz nods. “Yeah, summertime in Venice Beach.” “Sure beats summertime in Vietnam.” “Let it rest will ya? It’s history.” “We shoulda won.” “Yeah, right … sleepin’ under the pier?” “Got a bottle?” “Most of one.” “Let’s go.”
EXAMPLES I Want to Report an Accident by Tom Ford
“Celia, it’s all your fault. You’ll find my bloated body in the pool. Farewell. Umberto.”
She stumbled out, the note in her fist, and saw me, floating face down, like a giant fly marooned in Jell-O.
When she leapt to rescue me, and remembered she couldn’t swim, I got out.
