T. Nagar not suited for smart city projectSir, This refers to the report published in the ‘Letter to the Editor’ column

of Mambalam Times recently, in which an apex Residents’ WelfareAssociation of the neighbourhood had expressed its concern regarding thechoice of T. Nagar as a suburb ideal for the smart city project.

I wish to support the Association in this case as many streets in theneighbourhood are in a bad condition. The civic body and its authorities arelax in monitoring the work of the contractors. Further, there is no propercoordination of work between the different departments of the civic bodywhich often leads to dug-up roads, leaking sewage lines, exposed cablesand open drains. In this regard, I would like to point out that the bylane ofLakshmi Street, West Mambalam is not cleaned by Corporation sweepers. When asked they disown the responsibility by saying that the lane doesn’tcome under their purview. So, without addressing these long standingissues, envisaging developing T. Nagar as part of the smart city project isfarfetched and will be just be another exercise in the wastage of the taxpayers’ money. R. work was completed, they refilled the trench loosely with the earth dugout and left. After the recent showers, the loose soil gave in, and the wheelsof my vehicle got stuck in the pit and I had to arrange a tow van to pullit out. The various civic bodies dig pits and trenches all over the place andthen do not take measures to close them properly and repatch thedamaged portion of the road.

It is causing havoc in our street. It could lead to more such incidents. Theroad is slippery as well. Will Chennai Corporation officials take immediateaction to relay the road or atleast patch the damaged section with tar andblue metal? R. Krishnakumar, Baroda Street, West Mambalam

E-Service centers give ‘No Service’!Sir, The e-service centers are not functioning properly. From my own

experience, I find that the staff at these centers dodge their work byshirking responsibility and make the public run from pillar to post. AtTaluk Office, K. K. Nagar, the staff openly say that they have been askedto stop work related to ration cards or voter ID cards as the system is badlyprogrammed. I have received my smart ration card with my old addressthough I had corrected it three years back.

I have approached the office four times to get the correction done, buteach time I receive a SMS after a few days stating that my complaint hasbeen resolved even without it being attended to. I wonder if this kind ofnegligence is happening with the connivance of the senior staff or thepersons hired to do the job are dodging their work. As far as Aadhar cardis concerned, after waiting for 3 hours, I got it updated and a printout ofacknowledgement was given to me. I am unable to get guidance fromanybody as to whether I will get a fresh Aadhar card after alterations aremade or I have to once again struggle to get the card waiting in a queue forlong hours. H. branch of erstwhile State Bank of Travancore which was recentlymerged with State Bank of India. In the aftermath of the fire in ChennaiSilks, I understand that a decision has been taken to close the branch, which is quite shocking to old time account holders like me.

After the merger, a meeting was held in BKR Convention Hall, T.Nagar, to which the customers of the Associate Banks of SBI such asSBT, SBH, SBBJ and SBM were invited. The customers who partici-pated in the meeting had requested the SBI officials not to close theexisting SBT Branch in Usman Road, T. Nagar, on any account as it

Residents discuss long pendingissuesBy Our Staff Reporter

“Let the smart city plan be for the future. The need of the hour isproper basic facilities and resolving of the several pending civic issues”,is what most residents had to say during a meeting held last week.

The residents’ meeting was held on June 18 in Tanjore Road to discussthe long-pending issues in their locality.

“Where is the question of a smart city, when poor sanitation andappalling road conditions have not been addressed for decades”, saidPrabhakar, the president of Tanjore Road Residents’ WelfareAssociation.

“I have been a resident of the neighbourhood for over 65 years andseveral streets that were dug up for constructing storm water drains, have not been relaid”, he added.

“Encroachments are rampant on the main roads which are occupiedby street hawkers. Vendors and roadside eateries dump their waste inthe bins reserved for residents, which attracts stray cattle and dogs.Sweepers are not regular in cleaning the roads”, he complained. Hefurther said that the sewage lines in T. Nagar have not been relaid forover 65 years.

S. Jayaraman (a resident of T. Nagar for 25 years), said that roadsare being relaid without milling. It means the level of the ground floorof the older houses will become lower than the level of the relaid roadsleading to flooding during heavy rains intermixed with sewage waterthereby exposing the residents to communicable diseases. Jayaraman, who also moderates a Facebook page for T. Nagar residents, said thatwater is becoming a serious issue for the residents as wells deeper than25 feet are starting to yield pale yellow water. This has increased theneed to depend on tanker lorries for everyday consumption.

Corporation proposes to offer fivemore services onlineBy Our Staff Reporter

Chennai Corporation has proposed to offer five new services online, including birth and death certificate correction, inclusion of child name, application for building permission and one time assessment of prop-erty tax. At present, it offers 11 of its services online.
