Family Night BBQ– Jr. Chefs' Night

Ruben Donan is a student at the Los Angeles Mission College studying culinary arts. Ruben is an avid student and excels in the classroom amongst his peers, so much so that his professor personally introduced him to The Athenaeum’s executive sous chef for additional kitchen experience. Ruben has been a true benefit to the Athenaeum kitchen since he started in the summer of 2010. He has taken on many roles along the kitchen line but is most recognized preparing orders and greeting members at our Rath Al Fresco dinner service during the summertime. Over the last two years, Ruben has seen the Rath Al Fresco grow in popularity and Ruben has played an interregnal part in keeping it running smoothly and keeping members coming back each evening.

Time away from The Athenaeum and school is often spent with co-workers and friends, venturing out in L.A. to get a taste of popular restaurants, seeing concerts at the Staple Center, window shopping at the 3rd Street Promenade, or seeing a new exhibit at the National History Museum. A favorite destination is the French Café in Burbank for their delicious Nutella crepes. Or as an annual pass holder, “the happiest place on earth” is a frequent weekend spot for fun and feasting at both Disneyland parks.

Congratulations Ruben!

It’s hard to believe that summer has just about come to an end. For many, that means squeezing in that last minute getaway, preparing the family for "back to school", or patiently waiting for the recently hot weather to start to cool. Summer at The Athenaeum has been filled with members and guests escaping the heat to get a taste of our

seasonal summer menus, having a relaxing family dinner at one of the many Family Night BBQs, or enjoying the ambiance at our Rath Al Fresco. September marks our last full month to take advantage of the summer sensation, Rath Al Fresco. Join us Monday through Friday for the great fare and refreshing drinks that define this time of year. In October, we look forward to the reopening of our Rathskeller as a sign of the change in seasons.

Upon our return from the Labor Day holiday, members are able to get a jump start on their holiday planning. All of The Athenaeum’s holiday events will be made available online for advance reservations. These events are very popular and traditionally sell out early. So, mark your calendar for Tuesday, September 4th to secure your spot at a Holiday Afternoon Tea, Gala Dinner, or Children’s Tea & Tree Trimming to only name a few.

This month, the ever-popular Chef’s Cooking Classes resume with Chef Kevin rolling all types of colorful and tempting sushi. We welcome back our International Nights on Tuesday, September 11th with Iberian–themed cuisine of the Pyrenees. And on Tuesday, September 25th with Italian favorites from Milan. For seafood lovers, we bring you our 2nd annual Seafood & Crab Crack – a true feast of the ocean’s finest catch! Finally at the end of the month, we kick-off the fall, just like the Germans’ do, with pints to go around and a smörgåsbord spread at our Oktoberfest Beer Dinner.

A special thank you to our members for filling The Athenaeum with the spirit of community and camaraderie, which truly makes The Athenaeum a home-away-from-home for all of our members. We take pride in keeping The Athenaeum looking its finest and we appreciate your respect of the club’s dress code. In an effort to continue to bring you the fine service you have come to expect at The Athenaeum, your assistance in making advance dining and event reservations is recommended. With your help, we can better ensure a wonderful Athenaeum experience for all.

I look forward to seeing you all at The Athenaeum. Please drop by my office when you are next at the club.
