By Our Staff ReporterTemporarily erected roadside shops on Thanikachalam

Road, T. Nagar, were seen selling decorative items for Christ-mas and New Year.

According to one of the vendors, there are more than 200varieties of decorative items, including a number of varietiesof Christmas trees, bells, stars and hanging items.

He said that most of these items have been imported fromChina and are cheaper than the Indian varieties.

Christmas decorative itemssold on Thanikachalam Road

In the introductory scene of ‘Bhama Vijayam’, Narada, comingdown to earth from the high heavens to meet Krishna in Dwaraka, sings a well known composition of Thyagaraja Swamigal in ragaAtaanaa, “Yeylaa nee daya raathu.....”

This song is reputed to be the first composition of Thyagaraja. It is traditionally sung with the anupallavi as the beginning of thesong “Baala Kanakamaya&.” (According to the Thyagaraja legendand lore, the great composer is believed to have sung these linesin an inspired moment of creativity when Lord Rama appearedbefore him.). Nobody bothered about the anachronism!

And that was not all. Krishna and Narada sing a duet, again aSaint Thyagaraja composition in raga Thodi, “Koti NadhuluDhanushkodilo Undaga&.”. And there’s more to come. The lastsong is a chorus sung by the devotees of Krishna and it is now theIndian National Anthem! Yes, “Jana Gana Mana”! This song wasintroduced to promote the Indian Freedom Movement which wasthen taking the nation by storm under the leadership of MahatmaGandhi.

In “Subhadhra Haran” (1935), S. V. Subbaiah Bhagavatharplayed Arjuna. In one of the scenes, Subhadhra asks Arjuna to singa “Thyagaraja composition”! And he sings “ Shanthamu LekaSowkyamu Ledhu”! He had earlier sung the song as a ‘gramophoneplate’ which had proved very popular. Hence his darling listener’sspecial request! Of course he sings “Jaya Jaya Gokula Balaa” too, another popular ‘plate’ of his in the first scene of this movie.

In “Seetha Apaharanam “ (1939), an attractive and musicallytalented actress Mayavaram Saraswathi, also known as‘Mayavaram Paapa’, played Seetha. She was a noted player of thedivine wood instrument, flute. Consequently Seetha, Lord Rama’sconsort, played a song by Thyagaraja Swamigal on the flute!Though no mention is made in Sage Valmiki’s Ramayanam or anyof the other versions about Seetha being a skilled flute-player,this screen Seetha did and the scene would have certainly pleasedthe celebrated composer and Rama-Bhaktha of Thiruvaiyaru!

There have been many such anachronisms in Tamil Cinemaeven today about sets, set properties, costumes and such details. To take a comprehensive look at them, one would need to writea book !

D. K. PATTAMMALDuring the early decades of Tamil Cinema, several noted

classical Carnatic musicians came into movies and played roleswhich made use of their singing talents and skills. MaharajapuramViswanatha Iyer, Musiri Subramania Iyer, G. N.Balasubramaniam, V. V. Sadagopan, M. M. Dhandapani Desikar,Kalakkad Ramanarayana Iyer, Thiruvavaduthurai N. RajaratnamPillai M. S. Subbulakshmi, N. C. Vasanthakokilam and othersappeared in films with varying degrees of success. Some musiciansdid not appear on screen but lent their voices and sang for filmsas off-screen ‘playback’ singers. (Radha) Jayalakshmi, M. L.Vasanthakumari, and D. K. Pattammal belong to such a list, outof which Pattammal was “the greatest Roman of them all.”

D. K. Pattammal, who reigned supreme in the world of classicalCarnatic music for over six decades, was brought into films as aplayback singer by the sadly-neglected Indian film pioneer, thelawyer-turned filmmaker, K. Subramanyam, in his Tamil filmclassic, “Thyaga Bhoomi” (1939). Written as a serial novel in‘Ananda Vikatan’ by the celebrated Tamil writer, journalist, artscritic and all, “Kalki” (Ra. Krishnamurthi), the film featured thestage and screen star of yesteryears, S. D. Subbulakshmi and K.J. Mahadevan in lead roles. (Mahadevan was a London-educated,handsome son of the famous Mylapore lawyer, K. S. JayaramaIyer and the knowledgeable musician, Alamelu Jayaraman. Laterhe turned a filmmaker). It also had the legendary PapanasamSivan in a major role as the father of the harassed heroine (S. D.Subbulakshmi). And also the sensation of the day, ‘Baby’ Saroja, hailed as “the Shirley Temple of India”!

The historic film has a sequence towards the end showing agroup of freedom fighters marching in procession carrying theIndian National Congress party’s flag, which the heroine joins tofight for her Motherland. While the volunteers march in largenumbers, a song is heard in the background highlighting theIndian Freedom Movement and inviting people to join it and servethe nation. “Desa Sevai Seyya Vareer& ..!” goes the emotion-richsong written by “Kalki” and tuned by Papanasam Sivan. The singerwas D. K. Pattammal!

Sir, I read a grievance letter published inMambalam Times (issue dated Nov. 24, 2012)about a waste dump yard near Valluvarkottamcausing problems to nearby residents.

We have a similar problem in our locality. There is a waste dump yard at the junction

of Mambalam High Road and UnnamalaiAmmal Street.

The garbage dumped with debris, drainageresiduals, animal waste and the like is leftuncleared for a long period in time.

The dump yard is perpetually overflowingwith garbage as people from the nearby slumadd to the trash. 1It emits a foul smell makinglife difficult for residents in the nearby areasand to pedestrians walking on the street toreach Kodam-bakkam railway station.

Because of the garbage there is severemosquitoe menace and we are at a high risk ofexposure to dengue and malaria.

On behalf of our street residents and associa-tions, I request the authorities to shift the yardto outside of city limits and out of bounds ofresidential colonies. - Malini Varatharajan,President, Roshini Flat Owners Associa-tion, 52, Unnamalai Ammal Street, T.Nagar
