Maharajapuram Krishnamurthy, the younger brother of an-other legend ofClassical Carnatic Music, MaharajapuramViswanatha Iyer, played LordKrishna in ‘Rukmini Kalyanam’,whilethe celebrated Palayamkottah Sisters P. S. Ratna Bai - P.S.Saraswathi Bai played Rukmini and Sathyabhama.

When Sage Narada calls on Lord Krishna, Krishna suggests thattheysing together which they have not done for long. At once GNBandMaharajapuram Krishnamurthy begin to sing a duet of theClassicalCarnatic Music Composition of Saint Thyagaraja Swamigal‘Koti nadhuluDhanushkodiloundaga’. Lord Krishna and SageNarada singing a Telugu songcomposed later during the 18thcentury! Anachronism? Against all rulesof Dramaturgy? And theDrama Theory of the great Greek Aristotle?Well, nobody both-ered about such technical niceties, with all enjoyingthe brilliantlyrendered duet by MRK and GNB!

That was not all. The last scene had all the important charactersofthe movie - Lord Krishna, Rukmini and Sathyabhama, SageNaradaandother rishis who had come to meet Krishna - all singingtogether inchorus ‘Jana Gana Mana Athi Nayaka Jaya He’. Duringeveryscreening of the show, the moviegoers stood and sang thesong inchorus along with Lord Krishna and Sage Narada, clappingvigorouslythough not always in correct ‘thala’! That was the periodwhen theIndian Freedom Movement was gathering strength andthat was verymattered and not cinematic idiom andgrammar!Surely, those were the days!

The legendary GNB went ahead and actedin a fistful of films,“Sathi Anasuya”(1937),”Sakunthalai” (1940) and “UdayananVasavadatta” (1947) and “Rukmangadhan”(1947)and went backtothe Carnatic Music World where he scaled Olympian Heights!

MUSICAL SOJOURN WITH M. S. VISWANATHANBitten by the acting bug, M.S. Viswanathan made his way to the

world ofmovies and landed in Madras looking for a break. That wasthe period when Jupiter Pictures was producing their first megahit “Kannagi”(1942).Regretfully the footage shot with Viswanathanas ̀ Bala’ Kovalan wasdeleted.

When Jupiter Pictures took on lease the Central Studios inCoimbatore,Viswanathan made his way to find employment as anoffice boy. Hisinterest in music made him the all-purpose assistantof the Jupiterin-house music composer S. M. Subbaiah Naidu.Mesmerised by theharmoniumwhich would soon become anextension of him, he wouldcompose songs whenever Naidu wasaway. And then came a turning point.

Jupiter Pictures was then producing “Abhimanyu” (1948) fea-turing M. G.Ramachandran, U. R. Jeevaratnamand S. M.Kumaresan in lead roles.Subbaiah Naidu had composed as manyas nine tunes for the song, “PuthuVasanthamaamey Vazhviley”but the producers and the directorrejected all of them. Viswanathanwas, by himself, composing a tune for the same song andNaiduhappened to hear that. And he was impressed. The tune wassubmittedand approved but none elseknew the real identity of thecomposer! The tunebecame a hit. Then Jupiter Pictures shifted toMadras and there wasthe inevitable retrenchment of the locals onthe staff. Thanks toNaidu, MSV was taken along but not beforethe reason was revealedtoJupiter Somasundaram who felt de-lighted in spotting a new talent.

In Madras, Viswanathan joined the music group of C. R.Subburaman. Hewas working for Jupiter orchestra unit and T. K.Ramamurthi was aviolinist in his group.

Subburaman died when he was only 28. A few more songs hadto becomposed for “Devadas” (1953) that was being made in Tamiland Telugu.Viswanathan composed “Ulagey Mayam....” sung byGhantasala and itbecame a major hit.

Though the music duo Viswanathan and Ramamurthy begancomposing music for Tamil films with”Panam” (1952), it was in the1960s that their magnificent leap aheadtook place with “PaavaMannippu” (1961), one of the series of moviesof filmmaker A.Bhim Singh with titles beginning with ‘Pa’, such as”Paasa Malar”,“Paalum Pazhamum”and “Paadha Kaanikkai”. A majorelementthat contributed to the resounding success of these movies wasthemesmerising music. Their songs that were a rage thenarestillpopular after 40 years. (To be continued)

Former epilepsy patient authorsbook on struggle with conditionBy Our Staff Reporter

P. Haridas, a resident of Thousand Lights, Chennai, startedhaving epileptic attacks when he was barely five months old. He thenlived with three kinds of seizures for more than 40 years without anycure. Medicines proved futile and surgery became the only viableoption for the reduction of his seizures. At the age of 43, he underwenta successful major neurosurgery on his right forehead. At the age of45, he became 100% free from all kinds of seizures, with permanentcure from epilepsy.

According to him, the condition had taken a huge toll on his life andhealth and had ruined his career. It didn’t allow him peace andhappiness because of the different kinds of recurrent seizures thatoccurred at any time and any place.

He has written an autobiography titled ‘My Experience withEpilepsy’, which will get released on Feb. 5. The book is about his lifeand struggle against epilepsy and how he escaped from the jaws ofthe death until when surgery gave him a new lease of life. The bookhas some emotional and many interesting chapters, which includeanecdotes in his life, he added.
