Abstract In order to develop gladiolus hybrid through conventional breeding, several reciprocal crosses were made. Seedlings raised hybrid seeds of these reciprocal crosses were evaluated for quality parameters and the plants with desired traits were selected as per the international standards. Initially, 6 hybrids were released and US patents were obtained. In the second lot, 4 hybrids are given in this paper. These 4 hybrids have also been granted patent in USA. These are the first gladiolus hybrids of India, which have been granted patent in USA. The seedlings produced by the hybrid seeds were of varied lypes with diverse colours, eventhough the parents were the same. Ultimately, quite a few seedlings could be selected and developed as new varieties as per the international standards. Thu s, large number of hybrid seeds of reciprocal crosses is imperative for gladiolus breeding, as the large number of hybrid seeds offer better chances of getting desired traits.
