    6) A certificate of English language proficiencywith at least a 500 TOEFL score (only for for-eign applicants, unless they come from institu-tions where the medium of instruction is Eng-lish which should be indicated in a certificatefrom the institution).7) Two (2) copies (one original, one photocopy)of NSOcertified birth certificate.

    B. Grade Requirement

    1) Graduates of the University of the Philippinesmust have a General Weighted Average (GWA)of at least 2.0 in their undergraduate course.

    2) For non-UP graduates, they must have a GWAof at least 1.75 or its equivalent.

    C. The applicant must take the sit-in essay examand present himself/herself for interview. These areonly for the applicants whose GWA passes theDepartments requirements. Those with lower GWAneed no apply as the Department has strictadmission policies to maintain its reputation as one

    of the Centers of Excellence in the Social Sciences.

    The Master in International Studies Program seeks toprovide an understanding ofcontemporary internationalsociety, includingforces which have shaped andtransformed it.By examining the dynamics of theinternationalsociety, the program seeks to understandbetter, contemporary problems and variousstrategiesof responding to these issues. The program aims toprovide professionalpreparation for those who planto pursuecareers which require an international affairs background.

    Multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches aimto provide students with a wider perspective of inter-national society equipping them for a wide varietyof careers.

    A.. Documents Required

    1) Letter of application addressed to the Chairthrough the Graduate Program Coordinator;

    2) Two (2) copies (one original, one photocopy)of the Transcript of Records of all undergraduatework (and graduate work, if any) of the applicant(the TOR may be retrieved by the applicant ifthe application is rejected);

    3) Two (2) copies of filled-out application forms(which may be downloaded from the Depart-ment website) accompanied each by a2 x 2 ID picture recently taken;

    4) Three (3) letters of recommendation from(which may also be downloaded from the de-partment website) former professors or em-ployers;

    5)Official receipt obtained from the Cashiers

    Office after paying the Php 100 applicationfee (if a Filipino citizen), Php 200 (if a resi-dent alien), and US $25 (if aforeign citizen); and

    2) Depending on the students program of studyand/or preparation, the student must pass aProficiency Examination in Statistics, or in a for-eign language other than English.

    3) After completing the formal course and resi-dence requirements, the student must pass awritten comprehensive examination.

    4) The student must successfully defend a mas-ters thesis and submit at least five (5) boundcopies. Students under this program areencouraged to produce a Pre-Print Paper of his/her thesis where applicable.

    5) The student must complete the programwithin five years from the date of admission tothe program, inclusive of leaves of absences. Inmeritorious cases, extensions of residence be-yond the above regular period of completionmay be approved by the Dean. The extension

    shall be for a period not exceeding one (1) cal-endar year at a time. In no case shall the exten-sions exceed more than five (5) years. The stu-dent granted an extension shall take additionalunits of graduate courses in his/her disciplineor area during the extension period at a rate ofthree (3) units every two (2) years of extensionor a fraction thereof.

    PLAN A: (Thesis Program)

    1) The student must obtain a GWA of 2.0 orbetter in at least 30 units of the followingcourses:
