“This was exactly how I felt on my first day in Hamburg. The jet lag and home sick blended a great recipe for my not so good start in Hamburg. On my first day, I felt I wanted to go back home so badly. The obvious reason…I missed my family. But as the days went on, and as I met new people and made some wonderful friends …the journey became much easier. I had to focus on my objective for being there. I had to focus on achieving the best I could during my one month training in the Group Finance Department. ”

My training in the Group Finance department had been with Sandra Koerber, Fabian Decken, Bjoern Michellis and Joechim Wich. They had been great mentors to me and very patient in explaining and answering my questions. We had discussions, assignments and presentations on topics that are usually engagedwith in our day to day jobs. A lot of information on accounting standards used in Germany and Malaysia were exchanged as well. The information shared are useful for our preparation of financial statements during the year end audits.Understanding the group policies and standards and most importantly, being exposed to the German way of working. Understanding the Germanculture of working had been an essential part of this training.

Besides my training, I had the opportunity to discover Hamburg during our free time. We made visits to some historical and tourism sites. The Hafen City – the port of hamburg had been one of the beautiful sites in Hamburg. I also had the opportunity to participate in the HSH Nordbank Charity Run. The charity run was about 4 km along the Hafen City. A group of colleagues from a. hartordt took part and the best thing was that I completed it! During my stay there, I also had the opportunity to witness the Group 99 Football Tournament which a. hartrodt hosted the event this year. It was a fun day filled with lots of food, games, and gifts for the players and spectators, until the bad weather ruined it. Unfortunately, due to heavy thunderstorm, the event was called off.

At the end of my stay, I realized that It had been a good experience in meeting new people, understanding a new culture, listening and trying to speak a new language. My 30 days stay in Hamburg, Germany was a lifetime experience, something that I will not only remember but cherish for the rest of my life. I would like to thank the management of a. hartrodt Malaysia, especially Mr. Thorsten Drunagel for giving me this blessed opportunity.

Sharing experiences: “Life is never static” MALAYSIA

On last June 2015 I was chosen to go for a training in Hamburg, Germany office for a month period; from 1st until 30th June 2015. Experiencing training abroad is fantastic as I able to gain skills and real world experience along with engaging in meaningful cultural exchange.

The training focus is for me to observe and gain experience the outof gauge cargoes arrangement and RORO arrangement, namely with High/Heavy and special account department there specifically. In a more general, I have been exposed to sales visits, company official events and get involved in department daily activities. During training, I have been invited to join the meeting with potential clients and went to meet clients at their premise located in Kaltenkirchen. Other than that, I also have the chance to visit the Port of Hamburg and the area surrounding like Eurogate Container terminal and get into a NYK RORO vessel namely Orion Leader.

There are big differences in some of the things practice and culture in Hamburg as compared to my current working city of Shah Alam. I would love to highlight and share to my colleagues, about how punctual the Germans can be. Some of you might know, and some don’t, but I have been noticing the punctuality is happening almost everywhere; eg - the subway is on time, people rushing for work even they have patiently standing straight waiting for the traffic light turned green and yet managed to be punctual at work. Fantastic!

With overall, I am very happy to have this chance as my lesson to be independent. I would like to express my gratitude and thank the management of a. hartrodt Malaysia for once in a lifetime opportunity. To the team of High/Heavy Special department in Hamburg office (Mr. Manfred Osterhoff, Mr. Jan Glembocki, Ms. Youn-Song Bae, Ms. Adriana Neddermann, Mr. Tim Wellner and Mr Burkhard Unruh) and not to forget Ms Sandra Körber, thank you for sharing theknowledge and priceless hospitality. In addition to above, I am fully suggest to our management that we should send more of our colleagues for these kind of training in future.

On 30th April, 1975 the Vietnam People’s Army (NVA) captured Saigon, the South Vietnamese Capital. This day marked the end of the Vietnam War (Khang chien chong My), commonly known as the “American War”. It resulted inthe reunification of Vietnam under Communist rule and Saigon was renamed Ho Chi Minh City. Those who supported the war remember it as the liberation of Saigon. Vietnam celebrates this day every year as Vietnam’s Liberation Day. The Vietnamese name for it is Ngay Giai Phong. Today it is one of the Major Vietnam Festivals & Events. It is also called the Victory Day or the Reunification Day and Vietnam celebrates it every year declaring it a public holiday. This day initiated the process of reunification of North Vietnam and South Vietnam.

Many special art performance were took place: Exhibition about “Great Spring Victory 1975″ opened, dance and were lighted up the night sky in eight locations across the city. About 50,000 people, including Vietnamese leaders, attendedthe morning ceremony held in front of the Reunification Palace, which was the former Presidential Palace of the SouthVietnam government. During the ceremony, President Nguyen Minh Triet presented Ho Chi Minh City with a Gold Star medal, the highest honor a Vietnamese President can bestow. This is the second time the city has been conferred the medal.

1. What are your job functions right now? I was assigned to the Import Department in which I was to handle incoming import shipments and to also coordinate with the relevant parties, be it liaising with the customers and meeting their requirements or with the transporters for the necessary delivery arrangements.

.2. What have you experienced/learned working in a. hartrodt? As a fresh graduate with very little experience in this industry, this would definitely benefit me in getting some real hand experience and gives me a better perspective on how a freight forwarder operates. It is totally a different experience here so as compared with theoretical knowledge taught in classes as having practical knowledge often leads to a deeper understanding of a concept through the act of doing and personal experience.

So far, one of the good experiences I have encountered with the company is, I have given the opportunity to solely handle Singapore logistics accounts.

3. What do you see yourself doing in the next few years at a. hartrodt? Over the next few years, I would like to pick up new skills and be better equipped with knowledge. In short, there is no limit to what one can learn because the desire to know more makes an interesting experience throughout our life. 4. What inspires you most about working at a. hartrodt? It would definitely have to be the working environment here. Everyone here is supportive of each other and the teamwork working culture definitely exists here. 5. How do you balance work & life? It is all about proper time management which plays an important role in the aspects of both life balance and personal well-being. Personally, I would indulge in sports, particularly football which is a key component in leading a healthy lifestyle and is also influential in promoting healthy behaviour at work.

6. How supportive is the culture here? It is an open-door policy here in a. hartrodt. There is never a shortage of support from the colleagues and it is a norm here for everyone to lend a hand in times of need.

7. What you like BEST about working at a. hartrodt? By being globally recognised with the addition of motivated employees here, I must say that the working experience here is a fruitful one and Monday blues definitely does not exist here in a.hartrodt.
