DEDICATION

A generation of CHS students may forget muchabout their four high school years, but they willremember for many years the dedicated teacher andfriend who has become a living symbol of CranfordHigh. For 30 years he has served in our school, earn-ing our respect while teaching us math. This Junehe is leaving CHS. The school can never be thesame when the second floor no longer rings withthe rhythmic chant of " + + ~~ ~, + ~ ~~ +,+ - + - / f - + - / + - - - r / + + - - / '

or the resounding bellow of "factor that baby" and

"peachy." Students will remember for years thelegend of the Glutz family (Rollo and Tilly) as toldto them by "Uncle Ollie"—also known as "Westie,"the "Ol' West," and the "Wreat White UBBA"—andwill never forget the "magic number" or the littleblack book so carefully kept in case the FBI shouldwant to check up on any of his students.

It is to this man, Oliver L West, to express ourthanks that the Class of 1966 dedicates this issue ofthe "Golden C."

SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS

It all began with the graduation of the Class of '65 last June. Everyone is awarethat some day his class will be the "mighty" Seniors in the school. Yet there is alwaysthe shock of suddenly realizing that the time is now, that whenever you do anythingyou are doing it for the last time in CHS. All at once, there is no older class to relyon for leadership, advice and organization. Classmates become the editors, presidentsand captains.

As a class we have had the common problem of planning our futures. Whether itwas work or college to consider, together we contemplated and discussed our ideas, realizing the final decisions had to be made individually. Somehow these steps weretaken and are now in the past; only the benefits lie ahead.

Football and basketball games, the Senior Play, the Spring concert, the Christmasconcert, the Christmas dance, the Senior Play, the Spring concert, and the musical areall passed now. Our senior year is over and only graduation remains. We will alwaysremember it as a year of responsibility, decisions and fun. It was the year of theClass of 1966.

FOOTBALL

Although the 1965 football team had a ratherdisappointing 2-7 record, their dedication andspirit cannot be questioned. Under the leader-ship of the new head coach, Merle Jones, a newoffense was installed this year which emphasizeda more wide-open, well balanced attack. In theopening moments of the Linden game, CoachJones appeared to be a genius as the team tookthe opening kick-off and marched right downfieldfor a score. But Linden bounced back and thefinal score was Linden 14, Cranford 12. Thefollowing week, Cranford met one of the topteams in the state, Westfield and was trounced50-14. But even in defeat, Cranford did gainsome distinction, scoring more points against theBlue Devils than any other team. The followingweek against a strong Rah way eleven, theCougars could not do anything right, losing 40-0and then fell to the Crusaders of Clark, 26-0.The following week, the team rebounded fromits defeats and soundly defeated Hillside.

This game was highlighted by the running ofGene Demsey and the passing of Doug Nord-strom.

Following the win over Hillside, Cranford metSpringfield and continued their winning ways witha victory. Senior Doug Nordstrom's passing alongwith the excellent end play of juniors ChuckArchdeacon and Ken Dinsmore were the key

factors in the victory. Nordstrom threw 3 touch-down passes, 2 to Archdeacon and one 50-yardstrike to Dinsmore. Against Roselle, the Cougarattack just never materialized as they droppeda disappointing 32-6 decision to the Rams.Against a strong Scotch Plains eleven, the Cran-ford Cougars never gave up and made the gamea real contest, out-scoring the Raiders in thesecond half. But the final score was Scotch Plains33-Cranford 20. Again against a powerful Jeffteam on Turkey Day, the locals made a strongcomeback in the second half only to fall victimto a setback. In the closing minutes, the Cougarsscored two touchdowns but to no avail. SOCCER

With this year's graduating class goes the fond mem-ories of another controversial season of soccer. Underthe guidance of Mr. Angelo Preite, an infamous pro-fessional soccer star himself, the team established Cran-ford as a Union County power. Although the team'srecord was only 6-5-2 there was no team which emergedfrom a Cranford game unscathed.

Mark Aaron and Steve Rabin, team hatchet men, werebath ejected from games for overenthusiasm. Steve An-dreason provided the team spirit as he swam the lakeafter the team's lost balls. Among the other highlightsof the season were: Steve "Jewel" Rabin's star penalty

kicks, Scott Christensen's broken rib, Mark Aaron beingthrown off the team the second day of practice, SkipHerman's habitual bandaged legs, Mr. Priete announcingJohn Bodnar's name correctly, Dave Langley trying todrown Dominique, and George Goodwin supplying theteam with fine use of the English language (George,Gary, Nino and Charlie were the team's interpreters).

The soccer team will always remember the fine timesthey had together, t^r. Preite's advice to the futurecollege soccer stars will always remain with them, "Losiento muchisimo."

BASKETBALL

The Cranford basketball team, under the leadershipof Coach Bill Martin, contrary to the preseason predic-tions, was one of the strongest teams in the county.Although lacking in height, the team made up for itin desire and hustle and earned themselves the nick-name, "The Mighty Mites." The team won the ChristmasTournament at Bridgewater Raritan and then went on tocop the conference crown in a closely fought contest.During the season, the team proved itself to be goodin the clutch, taking an overtime win from Scotch Plainsand a double overtime win from a strong Rahway team.In both instances the Cougars had previously droppeda decision to that same club. Ed Beadle was the heroof the Scotch Plains win, sinking a long set shot at the

buzzer to put the game into overtime and doing like-wise at the end of the overtime period to win the game.George Goodwin, the team leader, was also a vital partin the Cougar attack, excelling in defense and offense.Junior Ken Dinsmore at center put out a tremendouseffort and improved greatly. By the end of the season,Ken developed into a tiger on defense and under theboards. Senior Scott Christiensen was the offensivestandout, scoring over 20 points on several occasions. He was especially strong on fast breaks. Bob "Louie"Leuthold rounded out the starting five. He was knownfor his deadly jump shot from all over the court. Otherswho played a key part in the team's successes were TomAuchdeacon, Doug Ross and Ron Schwartzbach.

CROSS COUNTRY

Perhaps the most grueling, time-consuming, all weather sport in high school athleticsis cross country. The cross country team under the leadership of Coach Frank Pannorfican testify to this. En route to compiling a five and eight season led by their captain,Dave Ladanye, and number two man, Mike De Micco, the team ran from five to fifteenmiles a day.

Dave Ladanye was undefeated in all meets, took first place in the conference cham-pionships, third in the county and nineteenth in the state. Mike De Micco consistentlyfinished either second or third in all meets and came in fifth in the county championships.

Behind these two fine runners were junior Walter Fus, sophomore Dick Jackson andseniors Louis Ackerman, Robert Baly, Paul Bauer, Robert Donnelly, Dave Fielder, RobertJagusak, Mike Jones, Mike Meyer and Richard Watson.

Members of the team will never forget running with Mr. Pannorfi in practice, playingtouch football the day before meets, running over freshly lined Warinanco Park andrunning in a torrential downpour against Irvington.

Competing with schools both in New Jersey andNew York the track team never won team laurels. Butindividuals and relay teams were quite successful. Inthe State Relay games the distance medley team com-posed of seniors Bob Donnelly, John Bodnar, Mike De-Micco and junior Walter Fus took fourth. At the NorthJersey Track Championships, Donnelly, Bodnar, Jonesand junior Tom Baker captured another fourth place.Competing against other teams from Union County in the

STUDENT COUNCIL

Posters, slogans and speeches in April '65 were the start of the '65-'66 StudentCouncil. With an excellent precedent being set by the previous Council, plans wentahead to make the new group of school representatives more active and effective thanever. The first step in the realization of this goal was an organized and productiveplanning meeting at which the officers and committee were convinced of a forthcomingsuccessful year.

As the school term rolled on, the list of Council undertakings grew. Foremost wasthe effort to form a chapter of the American Field Service in Cranford and to have aforeign exchange student in C.H.S. next year. With the preparations for this eventculminating this year, the Council has realized a dream which will benefit the students, the school and the entire community. Also in conjunction with the town, the Councilbecame involved with plans to make the students of Cranford more aware of theircommunity through participation in town government and events. The "Letters to Gl'sin Viet Nam" project enabled students to extend themselves beyond their own smallworld and show their respect for an enactment of the call of duty. Other activities ofthe Council were the sponsorship of a school musical, the annual Christmas dance, adress-up day and the sale of newspapers.

When the year ends and the gavel is passed on to new leaders, it will be with theassurance that the Student Council did its job; it represented well the student body andC.H.S. can be proud of it.

The Society's mainpurpose is to recognize scholastic achievement, but a memberof N.H.S. must achieve in other areas as well. Leadership, service, and character are also taken into account whenselecting members.

This collection of talented people is not in our school merelyas an advertisement of exceptional intelligence, but as aninstrument of service. Its main project is as a student tutoringprogram, conducted in any subjects requested. In otherwords, membership is not only an honor, but a responsibility, and a challenge to the members to continue to meet thestandards of the N.H.S.

GOLDEN C

The purpose of the Golden C is to bring to mindthe people—teachers, friends, classmates, teammates—and places of C.H.S.—from Rm. 4 to Rm. 312,from the gym to the cafeteria. It is the job of theGolden C staffs to gather this material. Typing, business, editorial and photography staffs work to-gether to put all these memories between two covers.Staff members are responsible for composing andcorrecting write-ups for each senior and for eachclub, typing yearbook material, and taking pictures. With the editors and sponsors lie the final decisionsand the responsibilities of meeting deadlines, cor-recting errors, and designing the yearbook.

It is a difficult and complex job that continues formost of the year with the editors contributing a majorpart of their time and effort.

The result is a brief flashback of C.H.S. The de-parting seniors will look to the Golden C, after theirfutures are established, and recall where it all began.

When the house lights go on when they should stay out during a concert, whenthe microphones don't work, when noises are heard back stage, when a distinctivefigure walks on stage—to retrieve a chair, you can be assured that the StageCrew is behind it all. Actually the crew is a necessary part of C.H.S. since amember must be present at every program that takes place here. This year, theproductions by the Metropolitan Opera Studio, the Montclair State Players, andthe New York City Ballet truly tested the skill of the crew members and thesuccess of the programs would not have been possible without the crew's hardwork behind the scenes.

GERMAN CLUB

Searching for beer mugs and Alpine hats is only a smallpart of the German Club's activities. Besides the annual Ok-toberfest, German Club members have been busy writingletters to students in Germany, listening to speakers, seeingslides and playing games, all to enrich the German Clubprogram. At the regular meetings, students become familiarwith the culture and life of the German people.

Classics Club isn't only for the Latin scholar and expert on Roman history. Ittries to include everyone who is genuinely interested in the field of classicalculture and is willing to put out a little effort to learn more about it. The clubreinforces classroom work through guest speakers and special reports and goesbeyond the normal academic scope by arranging several parties that bring outdifferent aspects of the classics.

The most outstanding speaker was Dr. Carolyn Bock, professor of Latin at Mont-clair State College, who gave a lecture illustrated by her own slides on the effectof Roman culture on Britain. If the club can continue to present such interesting, informative programs as this one, it will definitely fulfill its purpose.

SPANISHCLUB

The Spanish Club this year hasgone beyond itself. Besides havinginteresting and lively programs inschool, the club has looked foropportunities outside of school toaid projects of a Spanish nature. One such project was the drive forclothing and canned food to offsetthe problems of refugees enteringthis area from Cuba. A secondproject was even more extensiveand consisted of individual involve-ment in a tutoring program in anunderprivileged section of Eliza-bethport. The club initiated ourschool's participation and otherinterested students have joined. This tutoring service is part of the"lift for Learning" organization inElizabeth. Both the Elizabeth DailyJournal and El Clarin, the Spanishnewspaper, have gratefully ac-knowledged the Spanish Club'sassistance.

Under the direction of Mr. Goldstein, betterknown for his antics in the Chem lab, any interested studentis able to improve his skill at the game. We sincerely hopethat his club continues to grow in membership, because as theclub becomes more active, the chances increase of C.H.S.producing another Bobby Fischer.

RADIO CLUB

There is a new club this year in C.H.S.The club is logically called the Radio Clubbecause it has organized and is maintaininga non-commercial frequency modulationradio station. The originators, CharlieBlanding, Paul Josewitch and Joe Steiner, along with their sponsors, Mr. Massa andMr. Pannorfi, are building a transmitter withtheir own money and have written to theF.C.C. for a license. FORUM

When Cranford High wants to hear from the leading figures of our communityabout current issues and problems, who does it call on to arrange the lectures anddebates? The Forum Club—of course! Sponsored by Mr. John Witherington, theForum Club has brought many such activities to C.H.S. Mr. Yurochko presenteda discussion entitled "Introduction to Jazz." Four Cranford clergymen took partin the panel discussion, "Peace on Earth; Good Will Toward Men." After a debatebetween the town committee candidates, a straw poll relating to the electionscaused more controversy in town than there has ever been over a C.H.S. activity.Through these and other programs, the Forum Club is serving its purpose bymaking students aware of current problems, events and ideas.

"I^.i IDThe bell ot the end of the period does not necessarily end the

creative urge in an individual. He may wish to pursue an idea, searchfor a new medium, seek a better solution to a problem. If he is anart student, the Art Club gives him that chance. Under Miss Wong'ssupervision, club members may be exposed to the work of artists newto them; they may discover abilities of their own; they may, in short, develop a greater love for all that is part of the art world.

The mem-bership is composed mainly of members of the Bandand the Choir, however, membership is not limited tothese two groups.

At meetings the members learn more about the fieldsof music. The club also gives its members a chanceto express themselves.

This year's schedule included a Christmas Dinner, aMusic Club Assembly, a musicale, a picnic, and anassembly featuring the Beelzebubs, a singing groupfrom Tufts University.

Under the directorship of Mr. Lenny and the leadership of Peter Prior, the Choir hasbecome one of the best vocal groups in the area. Invitations to sing at the Port AuthorityBuilding during the Christmas season and to take part in the dedication of the newauditorium at Newark State Teachers College show how well known our Choir hasbecome.
