TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

THE AVM STORY - 83

Meenakumari (1933-1972), hailed as one of the best ac-tresses of Indian Cinema, came from a family of theatricalbackground, her father Ali Bux being a stage actor and motherIqbal Begum a dancer.

Named Mahajhabeen, she entered movies to support thefamily as a child actress under the name ‘Baby Meena’ in 1939.Renamed Meenakumari, she blossomed as an excellent ac-tress of tragic serious roles and showed a wide range includingcomedy.

Her complicated private life influenced her screen personaand urged her to write and publish poetry. She created memo-rable roles in costume and period films like “Baiju Bawra”(1952), “Azad” (1955), “Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam” (1962),“Chitralekha” (1964), and “Pakeezah” (1971). Sadly she didyoung when she was barely 40.

In 1957, Meiyappan scored one of his finest triumphs with“Bhabhi”, the Hindi remake of “Kula Deivam”. It was a majorsuccess of the year and enjoyed long runs in many States ofnorthern India including Punjab where normally heavy melo-drama did not always find favour with folks! In Calcutta, it hadan astonishing run of 54 weeks at Roxy cinema. The issue ofwidow remarriage evoked empathy in family audiences con-tributing to the grand success of the film.

Meiyappan introduced the directors of the Tamil version,Krishnan-Panju, to Hindi cinema with “Bhabhi”. The excellentactor and Hindi film star, Balraj Sahni, played the elderbrother. Pandari Bai played the same role as his wife and herperformance was highly impressive.

Balraj Sahni (1913-1973) was a person of varied talents andskills. Writer, poet, journalist, college lecturer, and brilliantstage and screen star, he is considered one of the best actorsof India. A Leftist by conviction, he wrote Hindi fiction and, after an impressive career on stage, he came into cinema with“Dharti Ke Lal” (1946). His convincing performance as thestruggling, starving, land-less farmer in the Indian neo-realis-tic classic, Bimal Roy’s “Do Bigha Zamin” (1953) brought himstardom and undying fame. His fame soared high with “GaramCoat” (1955), “Sone Ki Chidiya” (1958), “Kabuliwala”(1961),“Haqeeqat” (1964), and ”Garam Hawa”(1973). A champion ofthe underdog, he was a highly respected figure of IndianCinema.

The young widow in “Bhabhi” was played by the noted Hindifilm star Nanda. Daughter of the one of the important person-alities of Indian Cinema and celebrated Marathi star andtrend-setting filmmaker Master Vinayak, Nanda had begunas a child actress and made her way to stardom.

1957 was a historic year for Meiyappan. He produced threeHindi films and the third film brought him not only fame andname but also proved memorable - a time to cherish in hismemory and recall with justifiable pride and pleasure. Inter-estingly, the third film of 1957 which gave so much joy to himwas a children’s film, “Hum Panchi Ek Dal Ke” - an unusualgenre for him and AVM Studios! It created history as the firstfilm to win the Indian Prime Minister’s Gold Medal for the BestChildren’s Film.

The children’s film in India is a sadly neglected genre. Consid-ering that the country has been producing for many yearsnearly a thousand films annually, the number of films forchildren continues to be pitifully negligible. Private producershave not shown interest in this kind of films due to the starkfact that such films are not commercially viable.

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of inde-pendent India, was fond of children and they too loved him andaffectionately called him “Chacha Nehru”. He realized theneed for films exclusively made for kids and he was alsopragmatic enough to understand that film producers would notventure into that area for economic reasons. Consequently, under his inspired guidance, the Government of India estab-lished ‘The Children’s Film Society” (CFS). At first it washeaded by politicians who had no interest or involvement insuch cinema. Later, film world persons like stars KaminiKaushal, Amol Palekar and Jaya Bacchan and the famousfilmmaker V. Shantaram have headed the Society but thetrack record has been rather dismal and barely satisfies theneed for such films. Meanwhile, the children of India have tolook to the West for such movies.

NO HOLDS BARRED

Every evening, when I switch on the TV,I straightaway land on Asianet in spite of itsgenerous lard of the good things of the mar-ket without which one feels lost in this boun-tiful and beauty-filled world and feel honouredthat the goodies of life are brought before meas though I am in a fabulous supermarketwhich I have heard of but never shopped in.

One paint company has made a vow tospread sunshine and colour in the lives of theviewers by showing an old decrepit man, aretired teacher, going to seed sitting on thesteps of his house, when an old studentapproaches him. The chap bows and toucheshis feet whereupon the oldie says, “I am oldand so is my house”. The rich-looking youngman immediately promises to take care ofboth. And he does it with the special brand ofpaint which makes his house sparkle. Theoldie, overwhelmed by happiness, travelsback 20 years. How wonderful! He musthave been a humane, loving teacher whohad made even the most fractious studentattend his class.

I did not have such a good fortune in my 8thstandard in the rural high school where Istudied before defecting to Madras. ChanduMash, my class teacher with a gruff exterior, was the biggest customer of cane sticks, inthe wielding of which he was miles ahead ofthe rest of the teacherdom.

One bad morning he threw a challenge,“What is the opposite of big?”. After 20petrified mouths gaped and the cane didyeomen service by its swish proving its worth,he had a ghost of a smile as though he hadwon a bet that not even one of the studentsdeserved to be in his class.

My turn came and, after a silent vow tobreak ten coconuts at the local Bhagavathitemple, I took a dozen breaths and splut-tered “Small”. He appeared shocked, but thecane did not meet my palm and continued itssway until 39 other palms were seared.

Bhagavathi got her 10 plus 2 coconuts asbonus that evening and Chandu Mash be-came my hero. When, at the end of the schoolyear, I joined the M.C.C. in Madras, his wasthe only face I remembered and still remem-ber at my 78-plus age. He must have gone tohis Maker without the help of a paint com-pany or a once beaten student.
