Water seeping through the wall of Rangarajapuram subwayon Railway Border Road, West Mambalam connecting T.Nagar is flooding the subway causing problems for pedestriansand 2-wheeler riders. The subway was opened last year for thebenefit of 2-wheeler riders and pedestrians.

The authorities are still to investigate the cause for theseepage.

Complaints of Metrowatercontamination suppliedthrough pipeline have beenpouring in from several partsof T. Nagar in the last few days.

Some residents also com-plained that water from bothMetrowater pipelines and borewells is highly polluted and hasa stench that they believe couldonly come from sewage con-tamination.

T. Nagar Residents’ WelfareAssociation secretary KannanBalachandran said that house-holds on Rangan Street andNatesan Street have been re-ceiving polluted tap water forthe past two weeks.

“Employees from commer-cial complexes and some resi-dents dump food waste intodrains and they get clogged,”he said. “The authorities laidthe drainage pipes many de-cades ago and they are now interrible condition with leakseverywhere. This contami-nates the groundwater andseeps into wells and brokenwater supply lines,” he added.

More than 100 residents ofThiru Vi Ka Nagar took to thestreets last week to protestover the sewage seeping intodrinking water pipelines. Theydispersed only after Metro-water officials promised toclean the pipelines and supplyclean water.

Water contamination in Rangan StreetSir, Metrowater supplied through pipeline has got contaminated in

Rangan Street for the past several days, probably due to mixing ofsewage water. After several complaints, the Area Engineer SivaShanmugham deputed workers to attend to the problem. They dug pitsin several locations on the road to find the source of contamination. Aftertwo days of work. he informed the residents that the problem has beensorted out. I immediately cleaned up the sump and the overhead tanksby spending lots of money. But to my dismay I found that the watersupplied was still contaminated. When I informed Siva Shanmugham,he stated that the underground pipes were laid many years ago andthey are unable to locate and fix the problem. He said that the Dept.needs more time to fix the issue. I wonder then why in the first placehe said that the problem has been fixed even without checking.
