A CITY OF DESIGNDesign is a part of the Danish way of life. Open almost any interior magazine and you’re almost bound to see examples of mid-century classics created by legendary Danish designers.

Copenhagen’s leading design hive, Designmuseum Danmark, is currently undergoing a major remake. In 2014, the museum opened a new textile and fashion collection. In early 2015, the museum will remodel many of its permanent galleries to highlight the nation’s twentieth-century design tra-dition. The many events and exhibi-tions are featured on the museum website www.designmuseum.dk. And while you are there don’t forget to visit the tranquil and leafy courtyard for a coffee or lunch. Copenhagen’s design museum is located on Bred-gade, one of the main arteries of the city’s royal district, Frederiksstaden. The street is known for its many art galleries and classic vintage design showrooms.

UrbandesignYou can also explore the world of Danish and international design at DAC, the Danish ArchitectureCenter, which is housed in a herit-

age waterside warehouse and fea-tures exhibitions. Architecture pod-walks can be downloaded from the DAC website www.dac.dk – so grab a bike and let your smartphone guide you to the city’s new urban develop-ments. Between 19 June and 30 Au-gust 2015, the King’s Garden will fea-ture a pavilion highlighting the na-tion’s tradition for woodcraft. The event is hosted by the Danish Archi-tect Association. Just north of Copen-hagen, you can also visit the private home of legendary mid-century Dan-ish furniture designer Finn Juhl, which is today part of the OrdrupgaardMuseum.

MUSEUMS & ATTRACTIONSCopenhagen offers a rich variety of classical and contempo-rary collections, many housed in heritage-listed merchant townhouses, romantic palaces and modern galleries. Created by the great names of contemporary architecture, several of them melt into the surrounding parklands and nestle among the sand dunes by the coast, several near Copenhagen.

Children are also always a part of the picture at Danish muse-ums with hands-on activities that allow children to explore the natural world and tomorrow’s cutting-edge technology, not least at the city’s science and natural history museums and the new National Aquarium Denmark – Den Blå Planet. Children can also discover their artistic talent at workshops at leading

art museums, such as the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, SMK – Na-tional Gallery of Denmark and Thor-valdsens Museum.

No visit to Copenhagen is complete without a day in Tivoli – one of the world’s most magical amusement parks with white-knuckle rides, pa-rade bands and family fun. And it’s right in the heart of town!

French Impressionism and Danish Golden Age The Glyptotek is also home to Denmark’s largest collection of French art. Here you will find works by such artists as Manet, Monet, Degas, van Gogh, Cézanne, and Rodin. The collection of Paul Gauguin’s works is amongst the finest in the world, and the great masters of the Danish Golden Age are represented here, too.

Art and Ale The Glyptotek was founded by the brewing magnate Carl Jacobsen (1842-1914). A passionate collector, he built a world-class collection of art and cultural artefacts – the largest of its kind in the Nordic countries. The Glyptotek opened in 1897 and is now home to more than 10,000 works.
