DS34/44/54 Introduction and safety summary Chapter 1-1

1.1 Introduction and system familiarization

Congratulations on your purchase of SIMRAD DS34/44/54 Dual Station - a high performance unit in a unique slim-line design with a bright color display. The main unit and the dual station are identical in design and operation.

Dual Station versions:

• DS34 TFT 7” color display• DS44 ATFT/TFT 10” color display• DS54 TFT 15” color display

.... with matching keypad to operate as a dual station with the following main units:

• CE34/44/54 ChartSounder and CP34/44/54 Chartplotter• CR34/44/54 ChartRadar and CA34/44/54 MultiRadar

All the main units are available in color only and so are the dual stations. All units are compatible, regardless of display size.

The eject key and cartridge drawers are blinded and can not be opened on the dual station.

How to use this manual? The installation of the DS34/44/54 Dual Station is described in chapter 3.Having installed the unit, it is a good idea if you read chapter 2 before starting out. There is an “Index” at the back of the manual (for the main unit) to help you quickly locate a certain term or function of the unit.

Emphasizes important points in the manual.

For operation in general, please refer to the operator’s manual for the main unit.

Chapter 1-2 DS34/44/54 Introduction and safety summary

1.2 Safety summary

Precaution: Do not open the equipment, only qualified persons should work inside the equipment. If the glass in the screen breaks, be careful not to get cut on the sharp edges of the glass pieces.

Power source, fuse and power cable: Check that the DC power supplied to the unit is within the range of 10 to 32 volts. Note that the appropriate fuse must be employed (see the fuse rating in section 3.9 Specifications). Ensure that the power cord is firmly attached.

Grounding: To reduce electrical interference and risk of electrical shock, properly ground the unit to the ship’s ground using the ground screw at the rear of the unit. Good grounding should also be exercised for any equipment connected to the DS34/44/54.

Quality service personnel: The DS34/44/54 is sealed and does not contain any user serviceable parts. Opening of the unit will void its warranty. Touch-ing electrical parts inside may cause bodily harm. If the unit is not working properly, check sections Preventive maintenance, Repair and service, and Troubleshooting from the main unit’s operator’s manual. If your DS34/44/54 requires servicing or repair, call your authorized SIMRAD dealer.

Cleaning: Do not use any kind of strong solvents e.g. spirit, alcohol, gasoline or oils.

Software: The software version of the main unit (see start-up display) should always be informed in a service situation, or when ordering a Dual Station.

Initial start-up and operation of Dual Station Chapter 2-1

2.1 Initial start-up

Having installed the dual station and connected it to the main unit, the main unit must also be up and running before you can receive any valid data on the screen.

PWR To turn on the power, press and hold the [PWR] key till a picture appears on the screen- if the legend “No connection to main unit” remains on the screen, please check if the main unit is operating.

PAGE Press [PAGE] to scroll through a quick guide, which informs of the use of the keys and where you can enter owner’s setup. - The QuickGuide is also available via the SETUP menu.

ENT Press [ENT] when ready to assume normal operation

PWR Press [PWR] again to adjust the lighting in the screen and select day or night display, etc., move around in the display by means of the cursor key and change settings with +/- keys, and...

ENT Confirm with [ENT]

2.2 Operation of Dual Station

The dual station operates in parallel to the main unit. The only dif-ference is a slight delay in the screen update. When pressing a key on the dual station, the key command will be relayed to the main unit. A copy of the main unit’s display is then send to the dual station via a high speed data link and is presented on the dual station.

The chart cursor operates via a special technique which enables a fast and smooth update. This technique could not be adapted for the other cursors and opera-tional actions. They will still be updated with the general picture i.e. every 1 to 2 seconds (1 second typically). This means that when operating the cursor in the radar and echosounder displays or in the various menus and data displays there will be a delay of 1 to 2 seconds. It is therefore recommended to move these cursors in small steps in the radar and echosounder display or step by step in the menus and data windows to allow for the time delay to update the picture.

Chapter 2-2 Initial start-up and operation of Dual Station

An alternative to the radar cursor could be the EBL and VRM func-tion, which normally will provide a smoother and more intuitive operation.

Please refer to the operator’s manual for the main unit for operation and handling in general.

2.3 Turn off the Dual Station

PWR Press the [PWR] key to call up an info window, then press and hold the [PWR] key until the curtains begin to close

The dual station will automatically turn off approximately 15 sec-onds after the main unit has been switched off.

3.4 Location for display unitDetermine which place is the most suitable and convenient for navigation and general operation after considering the following conditions:- you can see the ship’s bow when you raise or lower your eyes from the dis- play.- there is limited exposure to direct sunlight to avoid overheating - see envi- ronment temperature limits in 3.9 Specifications.- there is good ventilation and minimum vibration.- the minimum distance to a magnetic compass is 650mm (25.6”).- provide sufficient space behind the unit to allow for proper cable connections to the rear panel connectors.

3.5 Connection between main unit and Dual StationThe DS models are remote control units for all the main units in the 34/44/54 series i.e. model numbers starting with the letters CA, CE, CP and CR. The units with the same model numbers are identical in size e.g. DS44 and CE44, so the same installation guides can be applied when performing the installa-tion. When choosing a dual station, the unit does not have to match the main unit in size, as all the mentioned units are compatible. The dual station can be ordered with a specific keypad to match the keypad of the main unit. There are two types to choose from, one for the CE and CP units, and one for the CA and CR units. Example:

A special connection cable (153-3002-023) of 15 meters with two male plugs is supplied with the Dual Station. Push one of the male plugs into the receptacle marked NMEA1 on the back of the XX44/54 or REMOTE on the XX34 main unit and the second into the DS34/44/54.

An extension cable (153-6080-004) of 10 meters is available for installations requiring a total cable length of up to 25 meters.

3.5.2 Power supply connections The internal voltage regulator will allow the Dual Station to operate normally within the power supply voltage range from 10 to 32 V DC.

3.5.3 FuseWarning! A fuse should always be installed to protect the unit. The fuse is situated in the power cable.

Using a fuse which is not specified for your equipment can cause it to blow the instant the unit is switched on or it will not protect the equipment as intended – see fuse rating in section 3.9 Specifications.

3.6 NMEA0183 interfacing (XX44/54)The NMEA1 interface of the main unit is linked to the receptacle NMEA2 on the dual station. This will enable direct connection of other instruments to the dual station, instead of running a cable all the way to the main unit.

3.7 Preventive maintenance

Surface cleaning – to keep the cabinet and display screen clean, wipe the sur-faces with a clean damp cloth. For heavier cleaning, use a clean, damp cloth which has been dipped in a solution of a mild dish detergent and water. Wring out firmly before wiping the unit.

Never use cleaning solutions containing spirit, alcohol, gasoline or oils.

Electrical connections – periodically check the electrical connections. Make sure that connections are tight and that no cables are frayed or worn.

3.8 Repair and serviceThe DS34/44/54 is sealed and does not contain any user serviceable parts. Opening of this unit will void its warranty. If the DS34/44/54 requires servic-ing or repair, call your authorized SIMRAD dealer, but first check Trouble-shooting in the manual for the main unit.

Spare parts – fuses may be bought from a chandler or a marine supply store. Use only fuses specified for this unit – see 3.9 Specifications. If you require a SIMRAD part, please contact your authorized dealer.
