No point queuing in the rain to seethings first. Being first, so what?It took 10 months for The Artist to

get here after seeing it at Cannes last year, and not allowed to spoil it by talking aboutit! This year, I went to soak up the streetcafes, the wine, food, the glam andatmosphere; and I got soaked. That 16hours a day cold windy rain we had inJune, started with my weekend in Cannes!Still, Bill Murray greeted me like an old

friend. I opened a door for Jane Fonda, eyes averted and expecting a tip (I didn’tgive her one).I watched Tom Hardy cream all overJessica Chastain, ‘shared’ breakfast withIrving Welsh (well, same dining room).Saw Ben Stiller and François Cluzet (tiny)on the red carpet, just missed running intoa very big hero… Mathieu Amalric. Couldhave got a great shot of Mads Mikkelsonbut chose the wrong side of the tape. And

This teapot seen recently on an innocent Oxfam shelf, is the first ornamental artwork Ihad noticed with health & safety at its heart. Included in the design is the word ‘HOT’repeated on the lid and belly of the pot. Perhaps we hadn’t noticed, after 600 years, tea-for-two is dangerous too? Thank heavens they warned us in time.‘Drink me… straight from the spout’ just wouldn’t do?

Just managed to avoid witnessingher crushing disappointment by getting farenough along the Croissette before shewould realise – it wasn’t ‘him’?My children came out, we caught onelovely warm festival evening together, then it rained. Still we bought umbrellas, dodged the cold and had fun. Left alonefor the last day, I caught the bus to Monte

Someone said itlooked like I was on a ‘care in thecommunity’ outing, standing there on therace circuit with the casino in thebackground. I didn’t care. Born Allan Stewart Konigsberg in theBronx in 1931, Woody Allen is one of thegreatest living directors. The neuroticNew Yorker is responsible for suchfabulous films as Annie Hall, Manhattan,Hannah and Her Sisters, etc and now a Rexfavourite, Midnight in Paris. Directed by Robert B Weide, this hilarious, engrossing, documentary chroniclesWoody’s humble beginnings as a comedywriter, stand up comic in GreenwichVillage, and finally, the director we allknow, equally loved and not so.A tediously long queue of talking headsfrom all eras of Woody’s life pop up toshare anecdotes about him: Diane Keaton,Larry David, Scarlett Johansson, MartinScorsese, and the rest. Perhaps moreinterestingly, Allen himself featuresprominently in the picture, walkingthrough New York regaling anecdotes fromhis childhood, and showing off his half-century old typewriter in his modestapartment. “Allen is in fine, funny, frank, self-disparaging form, there are fascinatingrevelations on every aspect of his life, well-chosen extracts from his films and TVinterviews…” (Observer)“There is more to Woody Allen: ADocumentary than its modest titlesuggests, although perhaps not quiteenough to justify swapping that ‘a’ for‘the’.” eh? Back, not so much by demand, ascommand. Still, this harmless film istaken from Paul Torday’s wildlysuccessful novel, and directed by LasseHallström (What’s Eating GilbertGrape, Chocolat), Salmon Fishing in theYemen is a charming romantic comedy.Britain’s leading fisheries expert AlfredJones (McGregor) is called upon by ayoung consultant Harriet Chetwode-Talbot (Blunt) to fulfil a wealthy Yemenisheikh’s dream of introducing salmonfishing to the Arab nation. Jones rejectsthe eccentric notion, however when thePrime Minister’s press secretary PatriciaMaxwell (Scott Thomas) gets wind of theconcept, the potential lure of furtheringUK/Arab relations, proves too great. Thus, Jones is pressured intospearheading the project. Can the three ofthem help fulfil the sheikh’s absurddream? Is it so absurd…?Oscar-winning screenwriter SimonBeaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire) does asolid job of adapting Torday’s charmingbook, and McGregor plays the sociallyawkward fisherman in his own voice, fora change.“Hallström wheels out the ‘swimmingagainst the tide’ visual metaphor once toooften, and there’s some drop-off in pacetowards the end. But this isn’t half asgooey as one might expect...” (Guardian)(SM) Surprisingly easy to watch, withsome great one-liners, and a gift for KScott-Thomas in the Malcolm Tucker role.

Written and directed by Wes Anderson,Moonrise Kingdom is a quirky, retro,quasi-coming-of-age tale. 1965, New England. At a Khaki Scoutsummer camp, an exceptionally skilledscout, and eccentric loner, Sam (JardenGilman) goes missing. He has run awaywith local girl Suzy (Kara Hayward). The two having fallen in love; much to thechagrin of her parents Walt and Laura(Bill Murray, Frances McDormand). As various authorities; scout master Ward(Edward Norton), police captain Sharp(Bruce Willis) and social services (TildaSwinton) join the hunt for the missingchildren, a violent hurricane begins toform off the coast of their small NewEngland island…Wes Anderson’s heavily stylised, immaculately conceived direction makesMoonrise Kingdom an exceptional film. A glorious soundtrack, predominantly byAndre Desplat, but which also makesexcellent use of Benjamin Britten’s YoungPerson’s Guide To The Orchestra, workswonderfully as we recall, with Sam andSuzy, the excitement and adventure of firstlove. It’s fun, fey and utterly charming. “Anderson’s homemade aesthetic is placedat the service of a counter-digital, almosthand-drawn cinema, and he has anextraordinary ability to conjure adistinctive universe, entire of itself. To some, Moonrise Kingdom may benothing more than a souffle ofstrangeness, but it rises superbly.”(Guardian) (Simon Messenger)

Boris succeeds in erasing K fromexistence via time travel means, leavingpartner Agent J (Smith) jumping back to1969 to warn a younger K (Brolin) fromthe future threat, and of course, save theworld. The perfect casting of Brolin as K’syounger self is MiB3’s ace in the hole –mimicking Jones right down to thesouthern drawl, squint and deadpandelivery. Their chemistry gives a muchneeded jolt to genre trial & error such asthis, and it pays off in spades.“It’s like a cross between Looney Tunesand The Naked Lunch, a hallucinogenicpopcorn movie you can safely forget amoment later.” (Guardian)It’s passable fluff, light on sci-fi, light oncomedy, heavy on grotesque alien effects(all credit to monster make-up legendRick Baker) and reminds us why weflock to the cinemas over summer. Back on a Saturday by overwhelmingdemand, it traces Marley’s life andcareer from his childhood as afatherless mixed-race farmboy in ruralJamaica, through his wild adolescenceon the mean streets of Kingston’sTrenchtown slum, all the way to histragically early death at 36. Marley doesn’t stray from the familiarrags-to-riches music documentary format, mixing interviews, archive material, concert broadcasts and new footage ofkey locations in the story – and somefabulous faces early on chuckling throughtheir own patoir commentary. We hear how he inspired many as aRastafarian prophet, yet his peace’n’loveimage is complicated by accounts of his“competitive” streak and domesticshortcomings, the latter expressed bycheated-on wife Rita and painfullyneglected daughter Cedella.“While Kevin Macdonald (Touching theVoid) has nothing but praise for Marleyas a musician and political figurehead, heis perfectly willing to lay out the barefacts, for us to judge for ourselves. It’s enough to win over those who are notfans of his music. Directed by Richard Press, BillCunningham New York is a warm andcharming portrait of the nowoctogenarian fashion photographer andcultural anthropologist, BillCunningham. With only his trusty Schwinn bicycle forcompany, Cunningham has beendocumenting fashion in New York City fordecades, practically inventing the conceptof “street style” i.e. shooting ‘ordinary’,non-catwalk model folk as they go abouttheir nattily dressed business. Cunningham himself is an eccentric -living in a tiny one bedroom apartmentwhich is filled with boxes and filingcabinets full of his photographs. Thewarmth and affection felt for him is madeclear by the film’s talking heads – an arrayof high fashion folk, including thefamously reticent and icy editor of Vogue,Anna Wintour, who remarks “We all getdressed for Bill”. So come along dressedfor Bill, and The Rex of course. Julie Delpy writes and directs in thiscross-cultural farce; a sequel of sorts to2007’s biting comedy Two Days inParis. Having movedfrom Paris to New York, she’s happilyshacked up with DJ/writer Mingus (ChrisRock) both have children from previousrelationships. The ‘two days’ refer to thehilarious, culture-clashing visit ofMarion’s family, her mad father (playedby her real father, Albert), sister Rose(Alexia Landeau) and her irritatingboyfriend Manu (Alexandre Nahon). Whilst it’s fair to say the film derives alot of its humour from poking fun at theFrench (and what’s wrong with that?),Delpy’s rapid-fire scripting, and Rock’snaturally funny comic presence, make itworthwhile. “Delpy captures the specifics of bustlingNew York life, but, more universally, shecaptures the chaos experienced byeveryone who’s ever had their in-laws tostay. Some films have an extra dimension, hard to describe. This is one. Sellingout in days in June, M Lazhar isquietly, moving French-Canadiandrama, rightly nominated for BestForeign Language Film at this year’sOscars. A school-teacher is found hanged in aMontreal elementary school, andAlgerian immigrant Bachir Lazhar(Mohamed Fellag) is rapidly drafted in asher replacement. Having recently suffereda personal tragedy of his own, the kindly, compassionate Monsieur Lazhar setsabout nurturing the children, only to runinto trouble with the school’s policies ona number of issues. The delicate nature ofhis refugee status hangs in the balance…The story touches on themes of grief, loss, integration, unity, with the onus onthe optimism of youth, “You could almost describe MonsieurLazhar as a morality tale, but it’s morethought-provoking than debate-provoking. Its strength is the realness ofthe emotions and authenticity of thedetail, although there is a gentleinsistence here that integration is a two-way street.” (Time Out) “Only the most obstreperous delinquentcould fail to be charmed by MonsieurLazhar…” (Guardian) “Life affirming”(Total Film) ‘Life affirming’ havebecome two of my favourite words, oflate. Whether you’ve grown weary of WillFerrell’s brand of humour or not there’sno denying the likable 6ft 4 comic’sdiversity in his roles. Robert Pattinson enjoys his deservedbreakout role as a fractured billionairein David Cronenberg’s urban feverdream.Based on Don DeLillo’s novel, Cosmopolisfollows Eric Packer (Pattinson), a 28-year-old captain of the money markets and techindustries. He insists on travelling acrosstown for a haircut, even though his driverwarns him that a presidential visit and arap star’s funeral are causing trafficgridlock. Packer’s world is confined to thisluxury vehicle.Cronenberg meanwhile, is back in thefamiliar territory that populated his earlier, eerier works (Videodrome, Dead Ringers). After a hatrick of Viggo Mortensen stintsending with the curious but tame natured ADangerous Method, Cronenberg takes agamble on the youthful allure of Pattinson, making the Twilight star his latest muse.“It has the air of an experimental theatrepiece and trades in heightened, eroticisedlanguage.” (Time Out)“To equate the experience, my screening ofCosmopolis had 23 walkouts, likely asmuch a testament to its thematicmisappropriation.” (What Culture) Oh dear, thematic misappropriation eh?Yes, Cosmopolis is slow and pretentiousbut fight the temptation to walk out andyou may find a small amount of pleasurein seeing Packer’s perplexing, claustrophobic world unfurl around him.(research Jack Whiting). Denmark, 1760s. German doctorJohann Struensee (Mikkelsen) is takenon to attend to the questionable sanityof the erratic King Christian. TheGerman’s eye is quickly caught by theking’s beautiful wife, Queen Caroline(Vikander), and the two fall into an affairthat threatens to consume them both. The opening scene, where a beautifulwoman strokes a horse, and then walksby a river in a rain-soaked landscape, islike one of those paintings where you seea figure, and a face, and a certain kind oflight, and glimpse a world. Withinmoments, she’s writing a letter. Within afew more moments, she’s back in a sunlitfield, in a different country and adifferent time. In moments, it is clear thatthis beautiful woman, in this rain-soakedlandscape, has an extraordinary story totell.Caroline Mathilde is the sister ofEngland’s King George III and the centralcharacter of this, Nikolaj Arcel’s award-winning new film. In that sunlit field, she’s fifteen and on the brink of anarranged marriage to the new 17 yr oldking of Denmark… The astonishing thing about thisastonishing film is that everything thathappens is true (best to handle that wordwith care). A beautifully photographedoutdoorsman’s woodsy thriller with anenvironmentalist theme, MysteriousAmerican, Martin (a magnetic Dafoe)is tasked by a shadowy biotechcompany to go into the wilderness andfind a Tasmanian tiger, a species longconsidered extinct. Based on the 1999 novel by Julia Leigh(writer-director of last year’smaddeningly awful Sleeping Beauty) anddirected by Oz TV vet Daniel Nettheim.Filmed in Tasmania, it has the faintlysurreal look peculiar to Australian moviesin which nature pulses with a mysterious, primordial shimmer. Martin lodges with the wife and childrenof a man who went missing months agoin the nearby mountains, possibly on thesame quest. The vanished father was anenvironmentalist who may have fallenfoul of loggers representing the leadingindustry in this part of Tasmania.Martin soon discovers that he is in dangerfrom both sides. The timber typesassociate him with the green protesters, while the environmentalists suspect(correctly) that he is using illegal steeltraps in the wilderness. “Prehistoric might also describe thecavernous face of Mr. Dafoe, now 56, heproves to have the right blend ofruggedness and sensitivity for thisconflicted hero. The Hunter never declares who is good, bad, right or wrong. And the implicationsof Martin’s decisions are left for theviewer to unravel.” (NY Times)

Back by great demand, Romanian-bornfilmmaker Radu Mihaileanu (TheConcert) offers up another certifiablycrowd-pleasing slice of world cinema inLa Source des Femmes, a modern-dayfable exploring female empowerment inthe Arab world. Set in an unnamed contemporaryMaghreb village, the women decide theyno longer want to fetch water while theirmen sit around and watch. For as long asanyone can remember, women havefetched water from a mountaintop springin the blazing sun. Given that new bride,Leila (Bekhti), Loubna (Hafsia Herzi) andthe loud mouth, Mother Rifle (Biyouna)have very little powers of persuasion overthe macho, Koran-quoting, males whocontrol the remote enclave, they launch a‘love strike’. Meaning no sex until theirmen learn how to divert the running waterto the village. Inspired by a true story, andin part a retelling of Aristophanes’Lysistrata, it is a meditation on love andcommunity. “Mihaileanu exploreswomen’s lives and relationships, withmen, with each other and with Islam andthe Koran, debunking myths through hisintelligently drawn characters andthoughtful blend of comedy and tragedy.”(Hollywood Reporter) Another portraitfrom across the world’s oceans anddeserts; one that will stay with you. Not asa flimsy Victorian tale of quaint savages, but a strong reminder that we know littleoutside our own world…? Don’t miss.

Salmon Fishing InThe YemenThu 5 2.00

Back, not so much by demand, ascommand. Still, this harmless film istaken from Paul Torday’s wildlysuccessful novel, and directed by LasseHallström (What’s Eating GilbertGrape, Chocolat), Salmon Fishing in theYemen is a charming romantic comedy.Britain’s leading fisheries expert AlfredJones (McGregor) is called upon by ayoung consultant Harriet Chetwode-Talbot(Blunt) to fulfil a wealthy Yemeni sheikh’sdream of introducing salmon fishing tothe Arab nation. Jones rejects theeccentric notion, however when the PrimeMinister’s press secretary PatriciaMaxwell (Scott Thomas) gets wind of theconcept, the potential lure of furtheringUK/Arab relations, proves too great. Thus,Jones is pressured into spearheading theproject. Can the three of them help fulfilthe sheikh’s absurd dream? Is it soabsurd…?Oscar-winning screenwriter SimonBeaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire) does asolid job of adapting Torday’s charmingbook, and McGregor plays the sociallyawkward fisherman in his own voice, fora change.“Hallström wheels out the ‘swimmingagainst the tide’ visual metaphor once toooften, and there’s some drop-off in pacetowards the end. But this isn’t half asgooey as one might expect...” (Guardian)(SM) Surprisingly easy to watch, withsome great one-liners, and a gift for KScott-Thomas in the Malcolm Tucker role.

This tiny gem is deservedly back in thesummer programme. Directed by JeanBecker (son of Jacques) it is a sweetnatured, heart-over-head Frenchcomedy of manners. Set in a typical small French country town,Germain (ç Depardieu), a semi-literate,bumbling, fat handyman, strikes up afriendship with ninety-somethingMarguerite (astonishing, real lifenonagenarian, Gisèle Casadesus). Theirchance meeting on a park bench sets inmotion a whimsical friendship. Margueritereads Camus to the big man, and slowlysets him on a path of unanticipatedredemption. It’s unashamedly cosy, inimitabilityFrench, set in a leafy town where the sunalways shines. Depardieu’s character is amixture of blustering assurance and lowself-esteem, despite having a blondegirlfriend half his age. Suchinconsistencies are there for Depardieu topull off with ease. However, Gisèle is thestar; an actress since the 1930s, she isgrace and charm personified.“It’s charming, sentimental, well-acted, andany readers’ group should make an outingto see it.” (Observer)“Nicely acted, feel-good lesson in self-improvement with a portrait of petitbourgeois village life that uses every clichéin the book.” (Independent) It’s close to Conversations with MyGardener in the sure knowledge that oneof them is in charge, but it’s not that one.You will love it.

Refreshing, funny and sad, it is back for matinees inJuly. Stuff the critics, what need is there to‘challenge’ these beautiful faces.

Snow White & TheHuntsman Sat 14 2.00

We’ve been given two Snow White filmsin as many months and whilst MirrorMirror happily indulged in its ownsilliness, and had Julia Robertsswanning around in goofy costumes;Hunstman on the other hand is analtogether darker, more Middle Earthyaffair.“Kristen Stewart plays Snow White, thedaughter of a benevolent king who’sbumped off by his maniacal man-hatingwife, Ravenna (Charlize Theron), aka theWicked Queen. Fleeing to the Dark Forest,Snow White makes the acquaintance of theHuntsman (Thor’s Chris Hemsworth), arough-diamond loner with a dark past anda terrible Glaswegian accent. Pretty average so far. But then the dwarfsturn up, and the true horror begins.Wait, that’s not Bob Hoskins is it? And itcan’t possibly be… Ray Winstone? But itis – and Toby Jones, Ian McShane, NickFrost, and Eddie Marsan, too. The creamof British acting talent has been digitallyshrunken and saddled with haircuts thatmake them look like a midget Slade tributeband.” (Time Out)The film’s saving grace then, is Theron, her malevolent, bitter and deliciouslybitchy queen is a welcome antidote to thegallant yet dull nature of our devil-may-care heroes. Fantasy is still enjoying itsrenaissance thanks to the success of theRings trilogy, but Huntsman isn’t going tousurp Peter Jackson any time soon. (JackWhiting)

Two Days In NewYork Tue 17 12.30

Julie Delpy writes and directs in thiscross-cultural farce; a sequel of sorts to2007’s biting comedy Two Days inParis. Following the not so bitingBefore (& After) Sunrise: 2004.Delpy reprises her role as Marion; aslightly unstable, intellectual late 30something photographer. Meet The Fockers would haveneeded twice the brains and twice thelaughs to get anywhere near it.”(Independent) (research SimonMessenger) Though Julie Delpy alwaysseems to write herself in to stories aboutherself, somehow they don’t cloy as eitherauto biography or over indulgence. Youdecide.

Monsieur LazharWed 18 2.00

Some films have an extra dimension, hard to describe. This is one. Sellingout in days in June, M Lazhar isquietly, moving French-Canadiandrama, rightly nominated for BestForeign Language Film at this year’sOscars. A school-teacher is found hanged in aMontreal elementary school, and Algerianimmigrant Bachir Lazhar (MohamedFellag) is rapidly drafted in as herreplacement. Having recently suffered apersonal tragedy of his own, the kindly, compassionate Monsieur Lazhar setsabout nurturing the children, only to runinto trouble with the school’s policies ona number of issues. The delicate nature ofhis refugee status hangs in the balance…The story touches on themes of grief, loss, integration, unity, with the onus onthe optimism of youth, “You could almost describe MonsieurLazhar as a morality tale, but it’s morethought-provoking than debate-provoking.Its strength is the realness of the emotionsand authenticity of the detail, althoughthere is a gentle insistence here thatintegration is a two-way street.” (TimeOut) “Only the most obstreperous delinquentcould fail to be charmed by MonsieurLazhar…” (Guardian) “Life affirming”(Total Film) ‘Life affirming’ have becometwo of my favourite words, of late. If youloved The Chorus here in 2005, you willlove this seven years on. Don’t miss.

A Royal AffairMon 23 2.00, Mon 30 2.00

Denmark, 1760s. German doctorJohann Struensee (Mikkelsen) is takenon to attend to the questionable sanityof the erratic King Christian. TheGerman’s eye is quickly caught by theking’s beautiful wife, Queen Caroline(Vikander), and the two fall into an affairthat threatens to consume them both. The opening scene, where a beautifulwoman strokes a horse, and then walks bya river in a rain-soaked landscape, is likeone of those paintings where you see afigure, and a face, and a certain kind oflight, and glimpse a world. A Royal Affair is the definition of classyperiod drama: well acted, intelligentlyscripted with a small-ish dose of bodice-ripping. (Time Out) Don’t miss.

Friends With KidsTue 24 12.30, Wed 25 2.00

Two best friends decide to have a childtogether while keeping theirrelationship platonic, so they can avoidthe toll kids can take on romanticrelationships. Here’s a relationship comedy riffing onthat drunken 2am conversation betweenfriends of the opposite sex: why don’t wehave a baby together, never mind sex ormarriage. Their solution to friends who have kids?Have kids with a friend, much to thebemusement of the other couples in theircircle.Friends with Kids takes an unusualromantic premise and explores it insatisfying and perceptive depth. Sheshould also be congratulated for avoidingthe sad spinster stereotype by giving equalscreen time to Jason’s struggles withageing and fatherhood. It’s only a shamethat after several interesting diversions, the plot eventually settles in such apredictable place.“Yet there are two major obstacles toappreciating the film’s achievements:First, the persistent feeling that you’drather be watching Wiig in Bridesmaids 2,and second, Westfeldt’s Hollywoodcheekbones, which rather give the lie tothe notion that she’s just an ordinary gallooking for love. Luckily, she offers aperformance that’s heartfelt enough toemote through several layers of Botox.”(Guardian) Sounds okay for, over-talkiewith over-friendly friends, American pap?

Pirates! In AnAdventure WithScientists Sat 28 2.00

From everybody’s favourite animationstudios, Aardman, comes a brilliant, clever, hilarious tale of swashbucklingadventure and ‘Ham Nite’. Hugh Grant is perfectly nuanced as thevoice of the Pirate Captain whoseambition lies in beating his bitter rivals tothe Pirate of the Year Award. When heand his hapless crew (an all-star barnacleof silly sea dogs: Martin Freeman,Brendan Gleeson, Russell Tovey, andAshley Jensen) encounter HMS Beagleand Charles Darwin on the high seas,Darwin notices something rather specialabout (heavy-boned) Polly, the Captain’sparrot, leading the crew on a franticjourney to Victorian London…Technically brilliant and beautifully &faultlessly observed from Peter Lord,David Sproxton and Co (Wallace &Gromit, Chicken Run etc).“I think you could treble the IQ of anychild, or indeed adult, by putting them infront of an Aardman product like this.”(Guardian)“Every scene has been embellished withsight gags, funny signs and dizzyingamounts of background detail, allenhanced, not obscured, by judicious useof 3D (glorious 2D at The Rex). It wouldtake multiple viewings to drink it all in,but The Pirates! more than justifies it.”(Telegraph) (SM) Taking a mere fiveyears to make, it’s the funniest, cleverestand wittiest animation you’ll see in thenext five. Sheer (ham-nite) joy.

Directed by Ridley Scott (BladeRunner, Gladiator) “Prometheus” is abeautiful, epic, if slightly messy prequelto his original “Alien”. Guided by an ancient star map -interpreted as an invitation to visithumanity’s forerunners, the “Engineers” -Drs. Shaw and Holloway (Noomi Rapace,Logan Marshall-Green) are invited byPeter Weyland, elderly CEO of WeylandCorporation (Guy Pearce) on a mission tovisit a distant planet to discover moreabout these beings. Joined by an assortedcrew including icy Meredith Vickers(Charlize Theron) and exquisitelymannered android David (a superbMichael Fassbender channelling the bestof Bowie) to help the expedition along, what could possibly go wrong..?Common complaints appear to be thenarrative messiness of the ending, thebombastic score, and Scott’s apparentdesire for spookiness in preference to anyutterly terrifying, grusome, prolongedAlien encounters; however he displaysguts in attempting to address the genesisof HR Giger’s magnificent creatures, andindeed, life itself. Adjust yourexpectations, and you’ll be pleasantlysurprised. “It is a muddled, intricate, spectacularfilm, but more or less in control of all itscraziness and is very watchable.”(Guardian) (Simon Messenger)

COMMENTS FROM THE BOOK...

No Date Anonymous ‘Regular’Fed up with the old bald guytelling his paying customers his

opinion of films that we want to beallowed to enjoy.

“Fed up” carries no wit. To hold it all theway through the film, then come into thefoyer and write it at the end, is moreunfortunate than enduring a two minutediatribe. No annoyance should lastthrough a whole film. Seriously, anything that spoils the film for you, please tell us immediately. It’s too late atthe end.I stand up, say something inaudible, getoff and it’s over. If I dared to thinkbefore, I would never do it again. So MrMrs Miss Ms Regular, you’re right, I toonotice the irrelevance and impertinence, and the more I think about it, the more Ithink it should stop. But I find it best notto think about it, before, during or after, and only do when one of our kidsrepeats what I’ve just said, or worse, forgotten! So, to stem your discomfort, and mypleasure, it is best to wait until theelderly, but perfectly formed pate, reappears in the foyer, so you might takeyour seat, in peace.

23/3 Anonymous I’m so hot for James Hannaway! Yum!

So take that and a pound a week!

2/5 Sue Dyson Sorry James – but the munchers andrustlers have arrived; Exotic MarigoldHotel potentially ruined by endlesseating throughout – please introduce a“quieter area”

Thank you Sue Dyson, if only for yourname and a hint of wit. The sound ofsomeone else’s eating can carry over thenoisiest car chase and induce fantasies oftheir slow death. We do our utmost to keep wrappingsrustle-free. However, we have no powerover dentures, mastication or saliva;heavy breathing or snoring (you shouldcome for the babies on Tuesdays!). The

whole auditorium and our carefullyjudged sound levels are designed forleast audience interference. The seats arewell spaced and the speakers set atwhispering level ie a screen whisper is awhisper not a shriek, and just loudenough to encourage silence. Our sounddoes not bombard, hurt or numb. Therefore it will never drown ambientnoise. The trick is to keep it at a level wherelistening is essential. So the thought ofcrunching during a heightened momentis unthinkable. That is unless you’resitting next to someone who is enjoyingthe crisp more than the moment. Inwhich case, please inject them with thedeadly Russian nerve gas provided, andcarry on enjoying the film. (You willfind the correct health & safetyprocedure [form DBI-F26] under yourseat).

2/5 In response to Ms Dyson (againanon) was added in capitals: “GET A LIFE YOU BORE.”

Again witless but largely condemned forits dull use of a tired cliché. This ranksas one of the worst among other tediousphrases/clichés, examples: “…on theplanet” serves as the decade’s equivalentof 1980’s “no way”. “I’m good” (noyou’re not. You might be ‘fine’ or even‘well’ or neither. It is for the enquirer todecide if you’re any good) “Can Iget…?” (Barman. ‘No, you can have [adiet bungo-bomb] but I, will get it foryou’) etc.Only “no problem” has surpassed mostothers for longevity (except of course for‘body language’ which remains the chiefammunition of the gossiper, slanderer, centre of attention seeker. Always usedagainst someone not present to persuadeanyone – who will take their side). No problem used at the end of atransaction, is used in place of thankyou, or yes I will see to that. Of coursethere’s no poxy problem, it’s a pair ofshoelaces! Particularly irritating whensung. You’ll have heard its lingeringpitch. Next time you hear it. Thank themand ask do they know Ol’ Man River.
