Build BackgroundHave children name local baseball fi elds where youngsters can play. Build interest by asking a question such as, ¿Qué es lo que hace que un campo sea bueno para jugar al béisbol? Read the title and author, and use the cover illustration to discuss the problems with the fi eld. Tell children that this story is realistic fi ction, because it seems as if it could happen, even though the author made it up.
Introduce the TextGuide children through the text, noting important ideas and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary so that they can read the text successfully. Here are some suggestions:
Pages 2–3: Tell children that this story takes place in a country called the Dominican Republic, where children like to play baseball. Suggested language: Vayan a las páginas 2 y 3. En el cuento aparece un niño llamado Miguel que vive en un pueblo humilde. Choices for Further Support• Fluency Invite children to choose a passage from the text to present as Reader’s
Theater. Remind them that each character’s exact words are inside the dashes.
• Comprehension Based on your observations of the children’s reading and discussion, revisit parts of the text to clarify or extend comprehension. Remind children to go back to the text to support their ideas.
• Phonics/Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and word parts, using examples from the text. Remind children that there are many high-frequency words in the text that they know, such as amigos, ayuda, de, en, para, niños, pueblo, casa. Have children refer to the classroom word wall, if possible, and make a list of the words in the text that they already know.

2 La lluvia comenzaba a caer mientras
Miguel se apresuraba por las calles, llevando
