SIGNIFICANT EVENTS Welspun became the public face of the long-running opacity in the Egyptian cotton supply chain. Target severed its relationship with the manufacturer when the content of its Egyptian cotton sheets could not be verified. Walmart, JPCenney and Bed Bath & Beyond pulled similar sheet programs from their shelves but maintained their business with the conglomerate. In the fall, Welspun was awarded U.S. Patent protection for an interactive textile and augmented reality system of products it developed to bring static designs to life. It also launched a multi-category collection of infant, toddler and children’s bedding under license with designer Amy Coe.

SIGNIFICANT EVENTS Nextt considers 2016 “a year of renaissance.” In late 2015, Nextt restructured to become an independent U.S. based-entity with the marketing rights to Alok products in the U.S. Previously, it had been the American subsidiary of the India-based company. Its Alpha Cotton blended sheet construction, which received a patent in fall 2015, generated revenue in 2016 as home textiles mills signed licenses to produce the weave. Nextt also saw growth in top of bed last year.

SIGNIFICANT EVENTS The introduction of Serene — a self-adjusting foam technology — was “a blockbuster” for the company, including the Serene Foam Bed in a Box. The manufacturer also saw strong sales for Avena, a fire-retardant, eco-friendly support material made without the use of ozone depleting substances. Sales were also solid in cooling products and ClimaDry pillows and mattress pads.

SIGNIFICANT EVENTS Oriental Weavers saw a boost in average ticket, continued expansion of the outdoor rug category, and sales momentum both in stores and online. Outdoor rugs continued to fuel growth, and customers were drawn to the better quality, higher-priced, more fashion-oriented styles. The new Andorra collection, an innovative, color-drenched collection, became the company’s best-seller, ever, and helped drive up average retails with its top-price tier of $449 for a 6-by-9-foot. Furniture stores proved a strong distribution segment again, and e-commerce continued to grow aggressively.

ORIENTAL WEAVERS MAKES SIGNIFICANT CAPITAL INVESTMENTS IN US PRODUCTION AND FACILITIES EXPANSION

DALTON, GA—May 2, 2016 – Oriental Weavers, the world’s largest manufacturer of machine-woven rugs, announces significant capital investments in its Dalton, Georgia manufacturing facility. The company just completed installation in March of an exclusive five-meter loom, which is the fastest and most technologically advanced loom in North America. The investment comes on the heels of a similar prominent 5-meter loom installation that occurred during the fourth quarter of 2014 that increased domestic capacity twenty-seven percent in 2015 over the previous year.

The new loom is the fastest machine on the market today and will help the company continue its commitment to growth of its Made in the USA products. The new equipment, thirty-five percent faster than a traditional four-meter loom, gives Oriental Weavers the exclusive ability to more efficiently and rapidly produce domestically made products, all while diminishing waste, eliminating excessive inventory and reducing the amount of energy needed to weave each rug.

The growth in domestic weaving production also requires an expansion to the company’s yarn production capacity. In order to increase yarn production and promote energy savings, Oriental Weavers is completing the installation of a new Superba heat-setting yarn line. Using the latest technology, the machine can produce fifty percent more yarn each year than the company’s previous equipment. The new technology is also very environmentally friendly; this state of the art heat-set machine reduces energy consumption by thirty percent.

These significant investments in production capabilities over the course of 18 months reinforces Oriental Weavers’ dedication to its superior inventory levels that have become synonymous with the brand as well as the company’s ability to quickly adapt to business trends and conditions. It is also important to note, consumers have become more in tune with where products are made and the desire for American-made goods has increased considerably. This new machinery allows for an additional seventeen percent increase in domestically made products over 2015.

Because of the exceptional increase in production in 2015 and planned for 2016 and beyond, the company is putting the finishing touches on a more than 200,000 square foot expansion to its Dalton, Georgia distribution center. The addition will accommodate the increased production as well as provide jobs for skilled workers living in the Northwest Georgia area. The distribution center expansion is expected to be fully operational by June 2016.

“Our customers’ needs come first at Oriental Weavers,” said Jonathan Witt, senior vice president. “Open floor plans that have become increasingly popular over the last decade and more and more of today’s consumers demand larger sized rugs. Our new five-meter looms allow us to accommodate that trend with much less waste that was created when producing room sized rugs on the industry’s standard four-meter looms. In addition, retailers expect product to deliver at a faster pace than ever before thanks to the immediate demands of today’s home delivery minded consumer. Incorporating these two exclusive five-meter looms into our manufacturing mix, along with the new heat-setting yarn line, we can accommodate retailer needs faster and more efficiently all while reducing energy consumption and providing more American jobs. Everyone benefits, everyone wins.”

Construction Types

Though technical, the construction of an area rug is a key element in making the sale. Consumers are interested in the quality of the product they are considering for purchase. It is important to not overwhelm the consumer with technical information but basic knowledge will assist with increasing purchase confidence. Oriental Weavers offers many different types of area rug constructions ranging from handcrafted to machine woven. The company is a leader in manufacturing rugs using the Wilton method, resulting in a more advanced color palette and a softer and denser pile. Refer to the Area Rug Key Terms section in this manual for more detailed descriptions.

FlatweaveThe fabric itself is braided or woven onto a loom to create the structure of the rug - no base material is used so the pile is thin (hence the name *flat* weave) Machine Made

Large machines have hundreds of spindles of fiber that are mechanically woven into a thin mesh backing. The machine is computer-driven and runs continuously to maximize efficiency.

Hand-TuftedHand-tufted rugs are made using a “gun”: a hand operated tool that punches strands of fiber into a canvas stretched on a frame. The design of the rug is drawn on the canvas, and the worker fills in the pattern with the appropriate color fiber, When the rug design is fully piled, the rug is removed from the frame and a scrim fabric is glued to the back of the rug. Once the glue is settled the scrim backing helps to hold the fiber pile in place.

Hand-KnottedA weaver sits behind a loom and hand ties individual knots onto the vertical strings seen on the backside of the rug.

Hand-HookedHooked rugs are made by tufting loops of yarn or fabric through a stiff woven base such as burlap, linen, or rug warp which has been stretched over a frame. The design is printed on the base fabric, and the loops of yarn are pushed through the fabric (similar to the process for hand-tufting).

Fiber Types

There are three main types of rug fiber—polypropylene, nylon and wool. All create beautifully colored, rich designs in a soft, thick, luxurious pile for unsurpassable style, quality and value.

PolypropyleneA petroleum-based fiber formed into yarns by a process of extrusion, whereby pre-dyed polypropylene pellets are melted down and extruded into a continuous fiber. Thanks to its strength and colorfastness, polypropylene resists wear and stains while retaining a soft wool-like feel. Polypropylene is the predominant machine-woven synthetic fiber that is both value-driven and has the power to compete with the best wool rugs.

NylonLike polypropylene, nylon is extremely durable, stain resistant and low in moisture absorbency. Nylon fibers feature a soft, luxurious texture and rich, lustrous appearance.

WoolKnown for its luxury and softness, wool is a natural fiber. Wool naturally repels water and is resistant to breakage and compression, making it a very popular material for higher-end rugs.

A great advantage of polypropylene and nylon rugs is that these non-porous fibers are essentially stain-proof and resistant to soiling from almost any chemical. Thanks to their synthetic fibers, both types of rugs result in little if any shedding and are less likely to affect those who struggle with allergies.

VacuumingIt cannot be stressed enough- vacuum, vacuum, vacuum! Area rugs receive a lot of abuse from dirt,

machine will go a long way towards prolonging the appearance and life of your carpet. Vacuuming is the primary defense against dry soils that can quickly build on area rugs.

Cut Pile Area RugsThe cut pile area rugs are well constructed and durable. A vacuum with a rotating beater bar to agitate the area rug pile and strong suction to remove loose particles is well tolerated by our area rugs. If your vacuum does not have a beater bar, it may remove surface dirt well but may leave embedded soil that can damage area rugs through abrasion.

Area rugs with looped texturesTo avoid damaging the loops, vacuum regularly with suction and avoid using the beater bar

Vacuum Tips• Make sure that the beater bar is actually rotating when in contact with the carpet. A worn belt will

reduce rotation when the bar contacts the carpet.

• Adjust the height of the beater bar so that it lightly vibrates the carpet, but will not cause the motor to slow.

General Cleaning and Maintenance Oriental Weavers rugs are manufactured with color, design and value in mind. They are also manufactured to last for years to come. But as with all things, care and cleaning will prolong the life of the rug. For general cleaning and maintenance, the following is recommended:

• Vacuum regularly to remove surface soil. When vacuuming certain fibers, such as wool, set the beater bar setting to the highest adjustable height setting to prevent damaging the rug’s surface.

• Long ends may work to the surface after use or vacuuming. Never pull these ends out of the rug but rather trim them even with the rug’s surface.

• Clean spills and spots immediately. Never rub a spill, always blot to prevent fraying of the yarns.• Periodic professional cleaning is recommended.• Use an Oriental Weavers rug pad under all rugs, even indoor/outdoor rugs. Refer to the rug

pad section of this catalog to browse the complete assortment or ask your Oriental Weavers representative for a recommendation. Using a rug pad will extend the life of the rug.

• Rotate the rug at least once a year, twice if in high traffic areas. No matter how dense the pile yarns or how well constructed the area rug, constant traffic patterns will begin to show. However, this process can be slowed dramatically by rotating the rug. This not only adds years to the rug but also allows the entire rug to wear at the same rate.

Rug Size Guidelines

Choosing the right size of area rug is just as important as selecting a pattern or color. Whether rectangle, square or round, the perfect size and shape of rug is critical to achieving the right look for a room’s particular proportions and design.

The size and shape of a rug can help define sitting, dining or accent areas of a space by accentuating particular groupings of furniture. Furniture can be positioned either directly on the rug or around it depending on the size of the room or the aesthetics you want to achieve. And, the use of multiple rugs can draw the eye from one room or area to another.

There is a science to choosing the proper size of rug for a particular application. Use this handy guide to help you determine the right rug for your room.

LIVING ROOMS For medium sized rooms, choose a 5’ x 8’ or 6’ x 9’ rug. These sizes allow for a greater design pallet, so the motifs can become larger and more focused on the room’s decor. Make sure your rug will accommodate all four legs of your coffee table. You may want to choose a rug large enough to accommodate all of your room’s furniture, or simply the front legs of your furniture grouping.

Size should be chosen to allow a symmetrical border of exposed flooring on all four sides of the rug. If the design of the room does not allow for symmetrical positioning, choose a size that will provide equal borders top and bottom, and side to side.

Wide open living spaces allow for the versatility of a larger rug – such as a 8’ x 10’ or even a 10’ x 13’ depending on the size of the space. Keep in mind that you should balance the space by leaving an equal amount of rug around the furniture grouping and an equal amount of exposed flooring around all four sides of the rug.

If the rug is to be the focal point, a large design element should be used to draw the eye down toward the space. If a piece of furniture or an architectural feature is to be the primary focus of the room, an all-over, repeating pattern should be considered to complement rather than concentrate. And, you might even consider positioning the rug at an angle to add a unique visual element to your space’s design.

FLOATING LAYOUT One popular room configuration is called a “floating layout,” where all of the furniture fits within the borders of the rug. Every leg should rest on the rug, leaving an adequate border around the furniture to nicely frame in a seating or dining area.

Also, the rug size should be large enough to allow a symmetrical border of exposed flooring on all four sides. If the room does not allow for symmetrical positioning, choose a size that will provide equal borders top and bottom, and side to side.

11

KITCHENS When considering a rug for the kitchen, think about the space limitations caused by cabinetry, appliances and islands. You may want to consider small rugs in front of task areas, runners or even accent rugs to properly fit the space while softening up the feel of the room.

BATHROOMS Bathrooms are small by design, plus you must consider the placement of bath fixtures and vanities with incorporating a rug. You may want to choose a 2’ x 3’, 4’ x 6’ or even an oval rug to achieve the right feel without overwhelming the space.

DINING ROOMS A good rule of thumb is that area rugs should be 3 to 4 feet larger in length and width to the dining room table. You should be able to pull a chair out and sit at the table without the chair legs falling off the edge of the rug. For the typical dining table and chair grouping, an 8’ x 11’ should be the minimal size considered.

ENTRY WAYS Entry ways offer a great opportunity for a positive first impression, especially with a round rug or runner. These small spaces usually require a 2’ x 3’ up to a 4’ x 6’ rug. Large motifs or medallions can overwhelm a space, however smaller patterns can complement tight quarters and allow the rug to become an accent rather than a focal point.

HALLWAYS These long linear spaces can be effectively accented using runners that lead the eye from one area to another.

BEDROOMS In bedrooms, there are various ways to incorporate a rug. You may choose a rug large enough to accommodate all of the room’s furniture, with a symmetrical border of exposed flooring on all sides. You can even position the rug at an angle for a unique design element.

Or, since in average size bedrooms the bed will cover the majority of a rug, you may want to choose smaller rugs to place around it instead. You can even incorporate a patterned rug in a bedroom with carpeting to add to the room’s décor.

Rug Key Terms

Axminster: The popular choice for duplicating antiqueoriental rug designs because of the flexibility in color and design. The pile is inserted one row of tufts at a time, each row representing a section of the overall pattern. The tufts are U-shaped and are anchored at the bottom into the primary backing which is simultaneously woven.

Aubusson: A French flat weave design, usually with a center medallion and pastel colors. Bokhara: Drawing their name from what was once atrade center in Tukestan, Bokhara rugs traditionally arewoven in northeastern Iran and Russia and are workedin the classic Turkoman “elephant’s foot” octagon, orgul. This pattern is repeated in rows and columns, usually on a deep red field, but is also seen in rust, tan, orange, light and dark blue, green, aqua, and gold.

Border: The design which forms the outside edge of a rug and surrounds, or frames, the field.

Bordered Rug: A rug with a solid or patterned border surrounding a solid field.

Chain Stitch: A crochet stitch used in rug construction that consists of successive loops to lock the final weft in place at the end of a rug.

Contemporary: Designs that are characterized by starkcontrasts, bold use of color, and geometric or free-form style elements. Contemporary patterns are often architectural or modern, but also include retro designs as well.

Cut and Loop Pile: A combination of cut ends andloops of pile yarn creating a variety of surface textures.

Cut Pile: Pile yarn loops are cut afterinsertion for the face of a carpet fabric.

Dhurrie: A flat-woven rug made in India, usually of wool, and noted for their geometrical or whimsical designs

Drop-stitch: A technique in machine-made rugconstruction where a line is “dropped” simulating carvingin handmade designs and adding a textural element.

Flat-weave: Any rug woven without a knotted pile such as a dhurrie

Field: The largest portion of a rug, typically the center, surrounded by the border(s). The field may be solid or contain medallions or an overall pattern.

Foundation/Ground: The backing of the rug composed of the warp and weft threads and often made of cotton, wool, or silk.

Fringe: Extension of the warp threads on two opposite sides of the rug. Fringe can also be attached to a finished rug to simulate warp threads.

Hand: The tactile aesthetic qualities of carpet and textiles; how it feels to the hand.

Hand-Hooked: Yarn is pushed through a canvas cloth with a hooking needle to form a loop pile.

Hand-Knotted: Tying or knotting pile yarns around woven backing fibers (warp and weft). The resulting face of the rugs is then sheered to a pre-determined height to give the pile uniformity. The more knots per square foot the more valuable the rug.

Hand-Tufted: Using a tufting gun, pile yarns are forcedthrough a primary backing material known as a scrim. Thisprocess forms a looped pile, and if left uncut the rug isreferred to as hand-hooked. If the loops are sheered offto create a cut-pile look, it is referred to a hand-tufted.

Hand-Carved: The cutting, or carving, of lines ordesign patterns in a rug during the finishing process tocreate texture and dimension. This process is simulatedin some machine-made rugs with a drop-stitch.

Heat Set: A stage in the yarn production process whereby two or more yarn fibers are twisted together and then heated to ensure the yarns remain joined. This process allows each yarn point to become fixed permitting greater design flexibility and appearance retention.

13

Rug Key Terms

Knots: The portion of the yarn that is attached, or knotted, to the backing material. In cut-pile, machine-made rugs, the knots are comprised of two points. In other words, the face yarn is looped in a “U” shape under the backing materials which, when finished, will form two points and one knot.

Loop Pile: A woven or tufted carpet construction having a pile surface consisting of uncut loops.

Medallion: The large, enclosed portion of a design, usually in the center of the rug field. Common shapes are octagons, hexagons, and diamonds.

Pile: The visible surface of a rug, consisting of loop and/or cut yarn tufts. Also known as “face” or “nap”.

Pile Height: The height of face yarns from the backing to the tip of the piece of yarn.

Ply: One or more yarns are twisted together to form a larger piece of yarn. Ply count indicates the number of single pieces that have been twisted together, e.g. two-ply or three ply.

Points: The tip end of a pile yarn and refers to the number of yarns that make up an area rug. The more points per square meter the denser the construction, and the denser the construction, the more detail an area rug will have.

Polypropylene: A petroleum-based fiber which is formed into yarns by a process of extrusion, whereby pre-dyed polypropylene pellets are melted down and extruded into a continuous fiber.

Savonnerie: A popular French-designed area rug with a hand-knotted construction of pastel colors and featuring a floral center medallion set on an open field and framed by broken borders. Many modern Indian and Persian rugs are inspired by this style.

Side-woven: A machine-made, wilton construction in which the rug is woven side to side rather than top to bottom. This process allows for a wide range of colors to be used, even up to 54 by Oriental Weavers and an added benefit is the ability for fringe to be “incorporated” in the rug.

Traditional: Modern-day representations of time-honored European and Asian designs reminiscent of Oriental or Persian motifs.

Transitional: A design style blending contemporary with traditional. Sometimes referred to as casual, transitional designs tend to be more popular with customers looking for the elegance of a traditional design with less formality.

Tribal: Characterized by style elements common to a specific culture of ethnic group these designs utilize earth tones such as yellow, gold, red, and brown. Tribal designs combine these elements in very exacting and structured designs offering their own interpretations.

Twist Level: The number of revolutions an individual yarn is spun around itself determines the twist level. A high twist level, or greater number or revolutions, allows the tuft to twist back upon itself and provides enhanced performance characteristics.

Warp: The parallel yarn strands that run vertically on a loom, and are often cotton, wool, or silk. Warp threads that extend beyond the face of the rug form the fringe.

Washing: A chemical solution used after weaving to soften a rug’s colors and increase its luster. Sometimes referred to as herbal wash.

Weft: Yarns that are woven horizontally through the warps and form the face of the rug.

Wilton Loom: Automated looms popular for producing authentic Oriental rug designs. The wilton loom is capable of making intricate designs in a variety of weights and colorations at a fraction of the time it takes to weave handmade rugs.

Wool: Noted for luxury and softness, wool has a high build and is available in many colors. It’s natural ability to repel water and resistance to breaking and compressing makes it a popular fiber choice in rug production.

Worsted: Before wool is spun into yarn, it is combed then worsted so that only longer pieces of fiber are left for final spinning. This process yields a high quality wool yarn.
