It’s Almost Here, Another Homemaker Year

August is always a time of planning and transition for agents. The new Homemaker Year is quickly approaching and it is almost time for you to get engaged in educational programs, meetings, and so much more. Be looking for new contests, new friends, and new (more simple) volunteer forms to help you record all the ways you are going to “be the good” this Homemaker year? -Angie

Georgetown Trip was a Huge

Success

If you missed the Georgetown Trip you missed a great time. 23 Homemakers and agents from the Pennyrile Area were able to hang out with Derby winners, tour beautiful mansions, stroll through beautiful gardens and vineyards, as well as eat some great local food. Plans are already in the works for next summer’s trip. We hope you will join us!

REACH your Homemaker Potential this Year

If there is one thing I know, it’s that Lyon County Homemakers don’t like filling out their reports. I am reminded of that often. But, what if filling out your reports (for things you already do anyway) could put you in the running for great prizes? This year as Lyon County Homemakers we are going to strive to REACH a goal in each of these five areas: read, explore, action, community, and Homemakers. Here’s how it will work. In your September club meetings your Presidents will be armed with the reporting tools you need to make sure you are eligible for a chance at the prizes. To meet eligibility requirements you must perform tasks in each of the five categories. You will be given an easy to read explanation of all the tasks at your September meeting. The more you do, the more chances your names in entered into the drawing for prizes. Can’t wait to watch you all REACH your Homemaker potential this year!

Bringing Joy in a Time of Loss

God’s Littlest Angels is an organization out of Owensboro who work together to supply burial gowns for children who pass away at birth. Here is their story: “In 2014 two ladies in Owensboro, Kentucky met as strangers but formed an immediate bond as they discussed the need to honor the precious lives of those special angels who do not come home; and to provide comfort and compassion for the families who are left empty and hurting from such a painful loss. Together they dreamed of providing beautiful bereavement gowns and wraps for those precious angels made from exquisite wedding gowns and bridal wear. Thus our God's Littlest Angels of Owensboro, Kentucky ministry was born. Since that time hundreds of gowns and wraps have been lovingly designed and constructed by caring volunteers and provided to over a dozen area hospitals. Just as an artist begins with a blank canvas so do our talented and creative seamstresses. Each gown is unique and carries our logo angel charm. They are truly a labor of love touched by many hands: from those who generously donate their gowns, those who deconstruct the gowns, those who cut and size the gowns and those who transform the pieces into beautiful gowns for our angel babies. If your angel has received one of our gowns, please know that our love and prayers are with you and we are honored to provide a small token of comfort and support to you.” As a way to support this charity, who supplies gowns to hospitals local to our area, we will be collecting wedding, prom, and formal gowns at the Lyon County Extension Office. If you have a gown tucked back in your closet or if you purchase something at a yard sale or consignment sale, please bring those items to the office by September 28, 2018. After that date the donations will be taken to Owensboro and given to this special organization who truly help people at the most difficult time.

Vision for Kenya Update

UPDATE! We currently have 1150 eye glass cases made. WOW! If you would like to sew at home, patterns and fabrics are available at the Extension office. Please consider helping us to reach the goal of making 2000 eye glass cases. Please look through your fabric stashes at home. If you have fleece fabrics that are at least 7 inches square you could donate, we can use that to make the cases really quickly. If you have questions about the project please call the office at 270-388-2341.

Local Traveler I am excited to introduce a new educational series called Local Traveler. Through this program, we will travel to towns throughout the Purchase and Pennyrile areas of Kentucky and explore fun and interesting places that you may not even know are right under your nose. To be a part of this program you will have to supply your medical information and your insurance card, just as with any traveling program we do through UK. Every other month for the next year I will share the itinerary with you. For this series, you will need to provide your own transportation. I will not be renting buses or vans. I promise to offer you fun exploration and food, but you will have to call up

your friends and plan your carpool. Please don’t let transportation keep you from being a part of this program. Let us know if you need a ride and we will connect you with others that are going. Also, if you need help learning how to use the GPS on your smart phones, please let me know. They are great tools and will help you get to our Local Traveler locations quickly and easily. Our first Local Traveler excursion will be to Murray, KY on August 30, 2018. Here is our plan for the day: 1:45 PM-Meet in the parking lot of the Playhouse in the Park located at 701 Gil Hobson Dr, Murray, KY 42071 (the Playhouse in the Park is located inside the Murray park) 2:00 PM-Backstage tour and meet the director of Playhouse in the Park (free) 3:00 PM- Leave for the Wrather Museum located on the Murray State Campus. Cars can follow me to this and all other locations. 3:15-4:30 PM – Tour the Wrather Museum (free) 4:30 PM- Drive to the Murray State Arboretum 4:40 PM-Arrive at Murray State Arboretum for stroll through garden and facility. (free) 5:05 PM-Leave for Sirloin Stockade 5:15 PM-Arrive at Sirloin Stockade for dinner. They are known for their buffet and steaks (this will be order and pay on your own). 6:30 PM-Leave for Playhouse in the Park 6:40 PM- Arrive at Playhouse in the Park to see the musical 1776. Here is the synopsis: “So you haven’t been able to score tickets to Hamilton? Come see the next best thing! Witness the birth of a nation as John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson attempt to convince the members of the Second Continental Congress to vote for independence from the shackles of the British monarchy by signing the Declaration of Independence. This delightful musical puts a human face on the pages of history as we see the men behind the national icons: proud, frightened,

uncertain, irritable, charming, often petty and ultimately noble figures, determined to do the right thing for a fledgling nation.” The cost for the play is $6. You must sign up at the Lyon County Extension Office and pay the fee for the play by AUGUST 20, 2018. THIS IS A NON-NEGOTIABLE DATE. The theatre will only hold seats for us until this date. After the play you will be free to return home. The play starts at 7:00 and is usually over around 8:30. This should allow at least 30 minutes of your drive home to still be in daylight. If you have questions about Local Traveler, please let me know, but don’t wait too long. This one has a short turnaround! Can’t wait to explore Western Kentucky with you!
