Lyon College said “thank you” to Dr. and Mrs.Frank Lyon, Jr., and their family at a “LyonheartedGala” in Becknell Center on Homecoming weekend.

The Lyon family was honored Oct. 22 for its long-time support of the college over two generations. Thecollege, founded as Arkansas College in 1872, wasrenamed Lyon College in 1994 in honor of Dr. Lyon’sparents, Dr. and Mrs. Frank Lyon, Sr.

Raymond LaCroix, Jr., chair of the Lyon Board ofTrustees, announced that the board had met the daybefore and approved a resolution naming Dr. Lyonchair emeritus and an honorary trustee.

LaCroix said it was only the second time in the

history of the college that anyone had been namedchair emeritus. The first time was 20 years ago to theday, when the honor was bestowed on Frank Lyon, Sr.

The gymnasium in Becknell Center was turnedinto a stunning ballroom with flowing drapery and asparkling canopy. Two giant screens flanked the stageand a slideshow of photos of the Lyon family taken byDr. Steve Sniteman were displayed on the screensuntil the program began, then live video of the eventwas projected on the screens.

Sniteman’s photographs are also featured in a spe-cial book, “Lyonhearted,” published as a tribute to theLyon family. Copies of the publication were given toeveryone who attended the gala. Dr. GeorgeLankford, professor emeritus of folklore, wrote thetext for the book, and Nell Tebbetts, ’07, designed thepublication.

After dinner, several people gave expressions ofappreciation to the Lyons. Dr. Dan West, who waspresident from 1972 to 1988, talked about Frank andMarion Lyon, who he called “two of the most inter-esting people I’ve ever met.”

He called Marion Bradley Lyon “a brilliant interi-or designer” who helped furnish and decorate many ofthe buildings on campus. It was through her thatFrank Lyon, Sr., began his affiliation with the collegein 1949. Lyon, Sr., served on the Board of Trusteesand as its chairman for much of the next four decades.

West also said Frank, Jr., and Jane Lyon “havemade a huge difference for good in this world.”

Dr. Robert Young III, a longtime member of theBoard of Trustees, spoke about the College’s namechange in 1994. The College was founded in 1872 asArkansas College, but in the 1990s, college leadersbegan looking for a name that would bring a cleareridentity to the institution as it changed from a region-al college to a national liberal arts college.

He said a consultant was hired to help with the

name change and a list of possible nameswas compiled. The name “Lyon” wasincluded. Leaders of other colleges and uni-versities were surveyed and the Lyon namereceived a favorable response.

Convincing Frank Lyon, Sr., that thename should be changed to Lyon Collegewas not easy, Young said. In fact, he said anemphatic “no!” However, Young said heand other trustees and administrators final-ly convinced Lyon, Sr., to change his mind.“He didn’t approve it,” Young said, “but heagreed not to oppose it.”

James D. Simpson III and Charles B.Whiteside III each spoke about “The Heartof Lyon,” Frank Lyon, Jr., telling humorousanecdotes about him and recounting hissuccessful career in business, his militaryservice, and his “stealth” philanthropy. Likehis father, Lyon, Jr., has not sought publici-ty for his support of Lyon College and themany other organizations that have benefit-ed from his generosity.

Mrs. Karen Bailey Moloney, daughter ofJane Lyon, gave a touching tribute to her mother,“The Soul of Lyon,” and to her father, who helpedJane pursue her passion for raising horses at SummerWind Farm near Georgetown, Ky. Mrs. Moloneyshares her mother’s passion for thoroughbreds and isnow the farm’s broodmare manager. Her husband,Mark Moloney, is manager of Summer Wind.

The farm has achieved international renown inproducing outstanding thoroughbreds. Mrs. Moloneyalso founded Central Kentucky WildlifeRehabilitation, Inc., a nonprofit animal rescue opera-tion.

The Lyons’ other daughter, Ashley Jackson, livesin Little Rock with her husband, Will, and their twochildren, Hannah and Henry.

A video by former Senate Majority LeaderWilliam Frist was played. Sen. Frist, a friend of FrankLyon, Jr., was unable to attend but wanted to send hisgreetings and congratulations.

Jimmy Bell, director of the Lyon College PipeBand, wrote a tune in honor of the Lyon family called“The Lyon Clan.” Bell and the pipe band played thetune and a framed copy of the music was presented tothe family.

Dr. Lyon retired from the board in June after manyyears of service as a trustee, including chairing theboard from 2003 to 2006. He first served as a trusteefrom 1985 to 1997, and was re-elected to the board in1998. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by thecollege in 1997.

A distinguished Arkansas business and civicleader, Dr. Lyon is chairman of Arkansas IrrigationCompany; Wingmead, Inc.; and the AgriculturalProductivity Co. He is a former president of the FrankLyon Co., former chairman of the board and chiefexecutive officer of Coca-Cola Bottling Company ofArkansas, former chairman of the board ofTCBankshares, former director and chairman of theexecutive committee of Twin City Bank, and a formerdirector of U.S. Bank.

He attended Davidson College, has a B.A. in busi-ness administration from the University of Arkansasat Fayetteville, and an M.B.A. from Harvard BusinessSchool. By JESSICA JONES, ’12After serving 40 years as an English professor at

Lyon College, St. Louis-born Dr. Terrell Tebbetts stillinspires students who go on to become teachers, lawyers, doctors, and editors themselves.

Students at Lyon appreciate Dr. Tebbetts’ work.Senior Charli Steed said of his AdvancedComposition class, “He’s teaching me a lot, but thereis so much work.”

Dr. Tebbetts was first motivated to teach Englishby Father George Tribou, who spent 50 years as anEnglish teacher at Little Rock Catholic High School.Dr. Tebbetts said, “Iwanted my classes to beas interesting and fun ashis (Father Tribou’s)classes.” Dr. Tebbettsfeels that teaching is“about empowering…You give them the powerto achieve what theywant to achieve.”

“I believe Dr. T ismore concerned withpeople,” senior LukeDiver said. “Dr. Tebbettscares very much aboutthe person, the studentlearning the English lan-guage as well as using itproperly and eloquently.I think sometimes itgrieves him to give badgrades. I can say thatabout all of the Englishteachers here, but it’spretty obvious withhim.”

Diver says he feelsempowered by Dr.Tebbetts and the teach-ing methods he uses.

So what has empow-

ered Dr. Tebbetts? “Summer internships,” he says. Asan undergraduate student, Dr. Tebbetts interned atthe Wall Street Journal and the Arkansas Democrat, honing his English and professional writing skills at ayoung age.

Now, Tebbetts is the Martha Heasley Cox Chairin American Literature, five-time winner of theTeacher of the Year at Lyon, and a recipient of Lyon’sLamar Williamson Prizes for Excellence in Teaching. He was also proclaimed the Arkansas Professor of theYear by the Carnegie Foundation and the Council forAdvancement and Support of Education in 1992.

Dr. Tebbetts hasempowered the commu-nity as well by helpingBatesville in various pro-jects and by joining sev-eral committees since hemoved here in 1970.Tebbetts has served inthe Batesville Preser-vation Association for 30years, twice as president, and is a Wood-LawnNursing Home boardmember.

Dr. Tebbetts is a for-mer board member ofFamily Violence Preven-tion in Batesville, served30 years on the ArkansasGovernor’s Develop-mental DisabilitiesCouncil, and is active inArkansas Teachers ofCollege English and theArkansas PhilologicalAssociation. Tebbetts isalso a member of theBatesville Kiwanis Club, and attends First UnitedMethodist Church inBatesville.

Dr. Tebbetts taught for four years at theUniversity of Arkansas at Fayetteville, where heearned his doctorate. He came to Lyon (thenArkansas College) because he wanted to work at a“church-related liberal arts college.” Tebbetts said, “Iwas applying only at such schools,” when he receivedtwo invitations to interview in January 1970.Arkansas College offered $1,000 more annually, so hedecided on it.

Dr. Tebbetts said he would continue to teach “aslong as I am still enjoying it and giving my studentswhat they deserve.” Tebbetts hinted that he wouldlike to make his career at Lyon last at least anotherten years, making it “a total of fifty.”

Back in the 1970s, when Tebbetts was looking fora position, Arkansas College only employed 22 facul-ty members, four of whom had doctorates. With anenrollment of fewer than 300, A.C. made it easy forTebbetts to begin his very personalized relationshipwith students, which continues to this day.

Senior Amanda Wawak says, “Dr. Tebbetts isinvolved with everything: students’ lives, alumni rela-tions, and any convocation you can think of – he’sthe best!”

Many other students agree, and so do Lyon’s pro-fessors. Dr. Ronald Boling mentioned Tebbetts’ com-mitment to his students in a recent Sigma Tau Delta(English National Honor Society) meeting. “I haveseen old students visit him and he remembers theirAdvanced Comp final paper from twenty years ago…they’ll chat about it like it was only last semester,” hesaid.

Alumnae Beka Sharp, ’05, said, “Without a doubt,Terrell Tebbetts is one of the most enthusiasticinstructors I have ever encountered. Especially at 8 inthe morning.” Sharp’s Advanced Composition classwas at 8 a.m., and Dr. Tebbetts “instilled the ideaupon [her] that ‘the reason is never because!’”

She said, “I don’t think there is anything bad youcould say about him,” and described one of herfavorite memories at Lyon College with Dr. Tebbetts.“It was a game of literary charades that we played athis house in his living room,” she said. “It was awe-some and hilarious. Think about all of the energy that

he has in the class-room – always inmotion – and thentransfer that into agame of charades.”

Other studentslook fondly upon Dr.Tebbetts as well.Senior StephanieHupp recalls, “Hewas the first profes-sor to ever make mecry, but he alsohelped me realize Ihad many weakness-es we needed towork on together,

which we did in Advanced Comp.” Junior Tesla Fields said, “He’s really interactive in

the classroom. He is really there for students on anacademic level and on a personal level.”

Senior Lydia Jarjoura remembers Tebbetts fromher freshman year Western Literature class. “He wasthe most enthusiastic professor that I’ve ever had, andhe’s very animated and made us more interested inthe stories.”

Dr. Tebbetts is known for his constant profession-alism: he always speaks with precision and propergrammar, and he also always wears professional cloth-ing (a tie, slacks and a jacket) every day. “Personalappearance is important,” Tebbetts said. “I like tothink of Lyon students as my junior colleagues. Theydeserve respect.”

When asked what the biggest change at Arkansasand Lyon College has been in the past 40 years, Dr.Tebbetts was stumped, but upon changing the ques-tion to “the best change,” he was very clear: “Thereinstitution of the Honor Code is the best change inthe past 40 years. It says that students and faculty areof equal status when it comes to the academic com-munity.” Tebbetts implied that he would not like towork at a school without an honor system. With theHonor Code in place, “there are no potential male-factors” on the academic ladder, Tebbetts says.

By RITA BROWN, ’09Showing up at Lyon College, I had a pair of soccer

cleats stuffed into my suitcase and a sleek white stilet-to on each foot, but no real direction.

As a transfer student athlete I had only two yearsto figure out what I wanted to do, and thankfully myamazing advisor, Dr. Terrell Tebbetts, quickly pointedmy four-inch heels in the right direction.

Knowing I wanted to do something in the com-munication field, he signed me up for an entire sched-ule of English courses, including my first-ever journal-ism class. At first the extremely high standard of workand effort the English faculty expected of me seemedout of reach, but I soon learned each of my teacherswas committed to helping me along the way.

I quickly fell head over heels for Bob Qualls’ jour-nalism courses, learning reporting involved muchmore than just punching out a story.

I gained confidence each day learning to edit, sub,and write news and feature stories in his classes, whilestrengthening my analytical and creative writing skillsin the rest of my course work.

As graduation loomed, I couldn’t help but readthe headlines I hoped to write some day blanket myjob prospects as dismal and bleak, and to make mat-ters worse, I planned on getting my foot in the door ina completely different country.

Luckily, I secured my first interview at a dailypaper in Aberdeen, Scotland, within weeks of gradu-ating. Armed with the skills and techniques I learnedand refined at Lyon (and a killer A-line skirt), Ibraved the editor’s door.

After an hour of questions, grammar tests, and asample writing exercise, I teetered out to my car onlyto get a call saying the job was mine.

I know for a fact that phone call was a directresult of my professors’ hard work at Lyon. The skills Igained at the College armed me with the necessarytools to tell a story, regardless of region.

In the past year I’ve reported on everything frommurder cases to council cuts, clenched my first exclu-

sive, met incredibly inspiring people and, most impor-tantly, I have grown as a reporter. I can never thankmy professors enough (especially Bob Qualls) for theirtime and effort. At a larger school I’m certain I wouldhave become lost in the masses, but at Lyon it’sincredibly hard to slip through the cracks.

Lyon helped me find firm footing in a field I love.and I look forward to whatever path my sleek, whitestilettos take me down next.

By RITA BROWN, ’09There’s no such thing as Monday through Friday,

9 a.m. to 5 p.m., in a reporter’s life. The news doesn’trest, and you quickly learn that neither do you.

Instead, Monday could be the plight of beachedsperm whale; Tuesday, two Chinese restaurantsburned down in a double arson attack; Wednesday, afeature on the city’s cancer support centre; Thursday,$150 million worth of cuts to public services; andFriday, a murder.

Every newspaper is different, but in the newsroomI work in, the editor expects three fresh stories fromeach reporter each day. We ring the police, fire, ambulance, and coast guard every hour to keep up todate on what’s breaking, but most of all we rely on ourown eyes to spot things out of the ordinary.

Lunch consists of a quick few bites stuffedbetween bylines and deadlines, and the day doesn’tend until the paper is filled. It definitely is a job youwork because you love it.

When you’re not on the job, making contacts inas many industries as possible is a must. It’s that extraeffort that allows a reporter to launch the police’s newserious crime investigation team in an exclusive story.

But along with attending those exciting ride-along drug busts, a journalist must be prepared to dealwith the industry’s more sensitive topics.

I remember when my editor sent me on my first“death knock.” He briefed me on the situation andgave me a few encouraging words.

The day before, a man was driving a van full ofteenagers to afternoon prayer in the mosque, but acurling line of traffic into the city centre threatenedto curb the group’s journey. Instead of potentiallymissing the prayer, the man switched his hazard lightson, pulled over to the side of the road, and crossed aline of cars to pray on the grassy center reservation(median strip). His van full of passengers was watch-ing when he attempted to cross the road for a secondtime and was hit and killed by a car. He was partiallydeaf.

Less than 12 hours later I was driving to the houseof his girlfriend of 10 years to see if she would like to

share a few words of tribute for the man, who was awell known volunteer in the community.

I had no idea what to expect, but I certainlywasn’t prepared for what I encountered.

She answered the door in her dressing gown, driedmascara streaks splayed across her face, and red spider

webs in her eyes. The grief she was feeling was so rawI stumbled through the few words I managed to getout.

When I returned to the office, the editor, whoquickly spotted how shaken I was, explained why itwas so important we provide an outlet for grievingfamilies to pay tribute to their loved ones and insistedthe day “death knocks” became easy for me was theday I needed to quit the job.

More than a year later “death knocks” are still dif-ficult for me, but I understand the job balances itselfout.

A few weeks after my first death knock, I met anincredible eight-year-old boy who absolutely loved

soccer but hadn’t been able to kick a ball for months.Doctors discovered a brain tumor the size of a tennisball inside his head, forcing them to perform life-sav-ing surgery. The tumor was successfully removed, butthe little boy lost the majority of his eyesight andfaced taking a heavy load of pills for the rest of hislife.

Despite all of this, the boy hadn’t uttered one sin-gle complaint. Instead, all he could talk about was thebig win his favorite soccer team pulled off over theweekend.

It’s people like that little boy that convince pro-fessionals in the news business to give up the conve-nience of the nine to five, because on every street andin any house there’s a story worth telling. It’s just amatter of how well you convey it.

With hands shoved deep into the pockets of hisgray suit and purpose in his steps, Lyon CollegePresident Dr. Donald Weatherman strides past thecharred remains of Edwards Commons. As he passes,he briefly pauses directly in front of the rubble andlets out a breath he probably wasn’t aware he washolding in. The blackened forms of tables, chairs, andsoda machines can be seen inside along with soot-covered bricks littering the ground around what is leftof the building.

The realization sets in — Ed’s is gone.On Oct. 26, a four-alarm fire destroyed Edwards

Commons, or Ed’s as it is affectionately called by faculty, staff, students, and alumni. The cause of the fire, which began at around 4 p.m., has yet to be determined. No one was injured in thefire. The Batesville FireDepartment and severalother surrounding depart-ments were unable tosave the dining hall but did prevent the firefrom spreading to otherfacilities.

Edwards Commonshoused student lifeoffices, a bookstore, Lyon Den snackbar, and a gameroom in addition to the dining hall.

Weatherman said he had one of the first mealsserved in Edwards Dining Hall in 1983 when he wasthe John D. Trimble, Sr., Professor of PoliticalPhilosophy at the College. It was only fitting thatWeatherman would have one of the last meals beforethe fire.

“I ate lunch there the day of the fire,” he said, nodding his head. “I wasn’t always able to go overthere and eat because I was so busy meeting with peo-ple, but I went that day for lunch.”

The dining hall was previously located in theAlphin Building, but was moved to EdwardsCommons when that portion of the building was

completed in 1983. It was named for the late John W.and Lucille Welman Edwards. The other end of theEdwards Commons building was built in the late1970s.

The evening of the fire, students stood shoulder toshoulder watching helplessly as flames consumed thebuilding — their building. Some took photos withtheir cell phone cameras, some called their parents, and some stared blankly at the unimaginable scenebefore them.

Lyon College sophomore Jon-Michael Poff said hewas at an off-campus tutoring session when helearned of the fire. His father left a voicemail on hiscell phone asking if he was okay.

“As I tutored that afternoon, I sat facing a largewindow, the blindscracked,” he said. “Butinstead of looking out toa sunny afternoon, myeyes could focus only onthe black smoke rising inthe distance.”

Poff said by the timehe returned to campus,Ed’s was a smolderingpile of debris.

“I came back to cam-pus and saw the remainder of Edwards Commons formyself,” he said. “I stood. And I stared. There wasn’tmuch to say and there wasn’t much to do — but tostare.”

News of the fire was just as upsetting to alumni.Juanita Sevik, who graduated in 1995, said Ed’s

was her favorite campus hang-out spot.“I would meet up with friends to share a bite or

just to study and catch up on each others’ classes andgoings-on,” she said in a Facebook post. “I'm surethere will be a bigger and better building built for thestudents of Lyon. I’m saddened by the loss of Ed’s, butI am thankful no one was hurt.”

How you can help with the recovery

The College has received many questions about howto donate and how you can help. At present, the best wayto help is simply to make a gift to the Annual Fund for theemergency response. The College would like to thankeveryone for their donations and offers of help in this timeof need. You can make a donation online at:

Building. The use of the Small Gym, which can seat220 students, is temporary. Student life offices and astudy lounge have been relocated to other buildings.

Weatherman said the College plans to remodelthe building that houses the Scottish HeritageProgram, Campus Safety, and an art studio to use as adining hall until a new building can be constructed. He said he hopes the intermediate dining facility willbe ready sometime during the spring semester.

There is no doubt another facility will be built. Before the fire, the administration had been lookingat plans to expand Edwards Commons to accommo-date the growing enrollment at Lyon.

“We will rebuild the building,” Weatherman said.“We need a larger facility.”

Weatherman said he is grateful to the communityfor offering assistance to the College. Restaurantshave offered to feed students. Other colleges havedonated food. Officials from local businesses, schools, and churches have contacted the College and offered

help. Alumni also stepped up to help their almamater in the time of need.

“The Batesville community has been remarkable,”Dr. Weatherman said. “They have been so generous.”

The Lyon College motto, which can be found onthe official seal, states “Perseverantia Omnia VincetDeo Volente,” or simply “perseverance conquers all,God willing.” It’s a motto that Lyon College faculty, staff, and students are taking to heart in light of thefire.

Poff said it was those words that allowed uncer-tainty in the moments after the fire to give way toconfidence.

“Biology professor Dr. Han Ong would tell youadaptation is a species’ means of survival and conti-nuity,” Poff said. “As the College’s ability to adapt fol-lowing the fire demonstrated, Lyon College is in goodhands and is able to adapt, whatever the circum-stances. Indeed, ‘perseverance conquers all, God will-ing.’”

By LILLY HASTINGS, ’13Lyon’s Edwards Commons student union has

served as a central and important building for nearlyevery single student for the past 34 years. Accordingto Brooks Blevins’ Lyon College: 1872-2002, the col-lege administration made plans for a student union“more than a dozen years” before construction of onefinally began in 1976. At this time, the College’s din-ing hall was located in the Alphin Building, nowhome to classrooms, faculty offices, and an art galleryand studios.

The original plan was to attach the new studentunion to the Alphin Building, but students rejectedthe idea, and the administration proceeded to build aseparate building. This was the start of Edwards

Commons. In 1983, Edwards Dining Hall was added to the

student union thanks to a large donation from formertrustee John W. Edwards; it was the “largest gift forthe dining hall project and the largest ever by aBatesville resident,” according to Blevins. Edwardsand several other contributors are to thank for thecomplete Edwards Commons facility that supplied 27years worth of Lyon students, faculty, and staff with aplace to meet, eat, participate in activities hosted bystudent life, and, most of all, have fun.

After the fire that destroyed Edwards Dining Hall, several alumni and current students used the socialnetworking website Facebook to share their concerns, encouraging words, and good memories of Ed’s.

Alumni remember Ed’s

Edwards Commons was the center of campus life and a popular gathering place for students.

Page 21: Lyon College Piper - Winter 2011

Alumni were incredibly quick to ask what theycould do to help with the problem of feeding stu-dents. The Lyon College Facebook page frequentlyposted updates on the cafeteria for several days afterthe fire, keeping students, parents, and alumniinformed.

As a way to relive the good times spent in Ed’s,the College asked alumni and current students toshare memories they had made in Edwards Commonsand on the Lyon Facebook page so others could seethem. In this way, students and alums could focustheir thoughts not on the bad, but on the good.

Robert Youngman, ’01, posted on the page thathe remembered when his “best friends in collegeworked in the dining hall on work study” and he“used to hang out there a lot.” Youngman even recalls“one fall I got the idea to spend a day working theremyself.” And while some do not get the chance to seethe cafeteria from the working perspective, every stu-dent, faculty, and staff member who frequented thedining hall and commons felt the warmth and com-munity of the atmosphere there.

“A great memory was the [sorority] recruitmentparty one. We always had such a great time clappingand chanting in the girls!” Lindsey Fry, ’10, posted

as her favorite memory of Edwards Commons. Notonly was the dining hall used for eating, it was alsoused as a venue when fraternities and sororitiesrecruited new members and held important events.

Joanna Fulbright, ’94, remembers when thesorority Phi Mu had a fundraiser in Ed’s where“LaGina Austin auctioned various faculty and staff tothe applause and cheering of the student body…Karen Culp New and I went in together and bid onDr. Wray.”

The fun activities, including recruitment andother events hosted by the Greek organizations, havealways been an important aspect of the Lyon Collegeexperience. Edwards Commons was a central locationon campus that was essential to the development ofthe community. Without the dining hall and LowerUnion area, Greek organizations and other LyonCollege clubs have discovered that finding locationsfor their events has become quite a bit more difficult.

But amongst the problems and inconveniences ofthe Edwards Commons fire, the people that make upthe Lyon community have been able to support andencourage each other better than ever could havebeen expected. Sodexo, the College’s food service, has brought in a portable kitchen to help ease the

problems arising from trying to cook and serve mealsin the Small Gym located in Becknell PhysicalEducation Building. The Sodexo staff, specifically, tryto keep warm and encouraging smiles on their faces, and they continue to strive to make the food and theatmosphere the best they can.

Michelle Bailey, ’13, thinks Batesville has been a“wonderful community… to open their doors to LyonCollege students in a time of need.”

The positive and helpful people of the Batesvillecommunity have helped students, faculty, and staffadjust to the change.

During the Thanksgiving Convocation Nov. 18,the Rev. Nancy McSpadden, the College chaplain, talked about how during this time of year we shouldremember all the good things in our lives and be fullof gratitude for them. McSpadden mentioned the firesituation and said that Lyon and its students “shouldbe thankful for the difficult times, for it’s during thedifficult times that we grow.”

Here are other memories of Edwards Commonsposted by alums on Lyon’s Facebook page:

Edie Sutterfield Nicholson, ’98: The first time Iever set foot on the Lyon campus was to attend aRobert Burns evening in Ed’s when I was a child. Welistened to poetry readings and watched the pipersand dancers and ate haggis. It formed my first impres-sion of Lyon – as a place of culture and possibility –which never wavered through the years of rush par-ties, fundraisers, dinners, and dances in that building.Condolences to all the Lyon community on the lossof our “Ed’s.”

Martha Hall Bowman, ’88: I came to ArkansasCollege in the fall of 1983, and that was the first yearthat they used Edwards Dining Hall. When I touredin the spring of 1983, I ate my sample dining hallfood in the Alphin Building, where the dining hallwas at that time. By the fall of 1983, they had turnedthe whole Alphin Building into offices and class-rooms.

Amanda Redebaugh: Four of the best years of mylife were spent at Ed’s. I am deeply saddened with thisloss. I hold in my heart so many delightful memoriesin this great community center for a wonderful mass

of special and grace-filled individuals whom I am soblessed to have fed, cared for and loved over theyears. Those brick walls were just a building, butthose who shared lives within it were a worthy con-gregation of like-minded individuals who wantednothing more than to share in the experience of com-munity. And that we did. ... so the “Church” burneddown, but the congregation lives on. May God Blessus all, for we are family.

Julie M. Fidler, ’85: When I was going to then-AC, my friend, Darick Wright, worked at the snackbar. He always had a big batch of nacho cheese warm-ing in the crock pot. I’d head down to the union lateat night in my jammies and slippers after finishingstudying, and Darick would give me an extra bighelping of that cheesy, tomatoey good stuff! I alsoworked some dinners in the cafeteria with my sororitysisters from Kappa Kappa Alpha and have many fondmemories of working on the Highlander in the build-ing.

Michelle Rosamond: My friends and I would playSpades, after studying. Had a lot of fun and a lot ofgood memories. Julie, I was also a Kappa and remem-ber a lot of good times in this building.

Ali Parker, ’09: Skit night during recruitment, study breaks down at the Lyon Den, DanceMarathon, seeing professors at lunch after you may ormay not have had a good reason for not going to classthat same morning, and the best scrambled eggs withcheese ever made!

Why help the Annual Scholarship Fund? The most critical gift need at Lyon College is

for annual scholarships. In short, more scholar-ships mean more students, and more studentstranslate to more acceptances into medical, pro-fessional, and graduate schools, and then even-tually to more service to the state, the region, and the nation. This year, the Arkansas ScottishFestival will be free.

The 32nd Arkansas ScottishFestival is set for April 8-10 on theLyon College campus in Batesville.Organizers said admission to thethree-day festival will be free.

The festival has for threedecades provided a glimpse of tradi-tional Scotland to visitors fromArkansas and all over the country.

The celebration began as a wayto honor the College’s Scottishroots. Lyon College was founded in1872 by the Presbyterian Church, which has its roots in Scotland. Thecollege recognizes Scotland throughits Scottish Heritage Program andthrough the annual ArkansasScottish Festival, which brings inthousands of visitors during theweekend.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Scottish festival with-out bagpiping and drumming competitions, andHighland dancing demonstrations. The festival fea-tures pipers, drummers, and dancers from all over theworld, including Ireland and Scotland.

Festival organizer Jimmy Bell said he hopes freeadmission will bring in more families to the event.

“We want moms, dads, kids, grandmas, and grand-pas to come and enjoy the festival,” he said. “We willhave something for all ages.”

Bell said this year’s festival will feature moreevents, more competitors, more pipe bands, and moreentertainment.

The Highland Games are a popular event at theArkansas Scottish Festival. The games feature ath-letes competing in traditional Scottish events includ-ing the caber toss, hammer throw, stone put, andsheaf toss.

The festival also has children’s activities. TheChild’s Passport program is a free activity where chil-

dren receive a passport and take it to the clans. Theyget the passports stamped at the various clan boothsand bring it back to the Welcome Tent for a prize.Child’s Passport organizer Brenda Lindsey said sheusually gives out between 200 and 400 passports dur-ing the festival.

The children’s games are also a hit with theyounger festival-goers. Children can play a variety ofgames and win prizes.

Other events during the weekend include sheep-dog demonstrations, library book sale, Highland cat-tle, corporate Olympics, feast and Ceilidh (pro-nounced kay-lee), bonniest knees contest, parade ofmassed bands, Scottish seminars, and an Iona worshipservice.

The Arkansas Scottish Festival website providesregistration information for patrons, groups, vendors, athletic competitors, clans and piping, drumming, andband participants. For more information about thefestival, visit www.lyon.edu.

By SAMANTHA JONES, ’14Fox’s Glee television series has popularized glee

clubs by featuring both popular music and famousguest stars. Even Lyon College students have beencaught up in the phenomenon – there is a Glee view-ing party every Wednesday on the second floorSpragins lounge, and many students cite Glee as theirfavorite television show.

These students probably do not know that 20years ago, Lyon College actually had a glee club.Called the Lassies and Lads, the club performed at theNew York World’s Fair and even went on six USOtours.

Dorothy Landis Gray, now a professor emerita ofmusic, was the driving force of the Lassies and Ladsfrom its creation to its eventual disintegration in1982. As choir director, Gray served as the adviser forthe groups, which grew out of the choir a year or two

after Gray’s arrival at Arkansas College in 1946. “I organized two groups – a male quartet, The

Lads, and an SSA group, which soon became TheLassies,” Gray said.

The groups took small gigs at first, singing atchurch events and for family suppers. Gray notes thateven if the groups had separate performances on thesame day, she would go to both. The Lassies were notoriginally known as the Lassies; at first, they were“The Sextet” and then “The Octet.” Eventually, thenumber of singers in the group grew so much that thename “The Lassies” was adapted.

“The first big break-through for the Lassies was aninvitation from the local Rotary Club to sing at theInternational Convention of Rotary International atSt. Louis,” Gray said.

The Lassies also performed at a Southern MedicalAssociation and Auxillary meeting – due to the fact

Glee! College once had its own glee club;Lassies performed around the world

that Gray was a member of the association at thetime. Gray took the group to the annual SMA con-vention and, after she became president of theAuxillary, Gray arranged it so that the Lassies sang atthis annual convention in New Orleans almost yearly.

Former Lassie Lucy Yeager, ’67, recalls on suchconference in New Orleans. “The show was in fourgroups, and one of the groups of songs was patriotic.Someone in the group heard us and liked that partand asked if we’d sing for Barry Goldwater that night. So we did.”

Yeager said that Goldwater paid for their meal andadded with a laugh, “We were the Goldwater Girlsthat night.”

While these performances were by no means smallgigs, they were not the big break that came in 1964.Gray had heard from a choral director friend atHarding University about USO tours and how toapply for them. Wilbur Mills – a very powerfulCongressman in Arkansas at the time – supported the

group through the application process.“We had to audition and apply to the National

Music Council, headed by Dr. Archie Jones from theUniversity of Kansas,” Gray said.

The group was accepted and, in July 1964, theLassies went to Thule, Greenland.

“I told the girls it would be cold up there, but theyactually were not prepared for cold weather. When welanded at Thule, the landscape was covered withsnow,” Gray remembered. “The military officials gaveus parkas to wear while we were there, so we werefine.”

The government provided valuable support to theLassies. The USO and the Department of Defensepaid for almost all of the group’s expenses. The Lassiestraveled in a renovated cargo plane and stayed onmilitary bases, and even received free food.

“All expenses were paid, and we got a ‘per diem’

to take care of ourfood,” Gray explained.

The Lassies also hadfree time in which theywere taken out on thetundra. During thisexcursion, the groupcame across caribouantlers.

“Each of us got anantler, and we put cot-ton balls on the tips andslapped mailing labelson them and they allarrived just like that,”Yeager said, “It was justwonderful.”

Five USO tours fol-lowed. One was to thePacific Command, anarea composed of Japan,Korea, Guam, Okinawa,Midway Island, and Hawaii. The next tour, to theSouthern Command, included islands in theCaribbean.

“We sang at Guantanamo Bay, the U.S. militarybase there, plus other Caribbean islands. This was afive-week tour in September, so we came back toschool a few weeks after the beginning of the semes-ter!” Gray said.

The next three tours were in Europe and theCaribbean. The tour to Europe in 1974, where theLassies sang in Germany and England, was the lasttour they went on. After this tour, the governmentdiscontinued its program of sending college groups tomilitary bases.

At this point, Gray combined the Lads and theLassies.

“I became aware of ‘Equal Opportunity,’” sheexplained.

Gray also started an opera group, and most of theLassies and Lads were involved in that, too.

In 1981, preceding the death of her husband,Gray was offered a sabbatical by Arkansas College.

Having never taken one before, she “thought it wouldbe fine to take this opportunity”. However, Gray’sleave caused the Lassies and Lads to become disband-ed, and the group has not been active since.

Lucy Yeager has fine memories of her time as aLassie.

“It was the time of my life,” she said. Since leaving the group, Yeager has organized

many reunions, and she mentioned that some of theLassies were even in each other’s weddings.

“We were sort of like a family, especially withsuch a select group. We really were pretty much like afamily. And I had lots of fun with the Lassies particu-larly,” Gray said.

Gray also noted a surprise arranged by FrancesRodgers, ’57, during Homecoming 2010. Rogers sentout letters to all the remaining Lassies she could findand told them to meet at Elizabeth’s Restaurant onthe Friday of Homecoming to surprise Gray.

“When I walked in, there was a whole table ofLassies. It was so exciting. And these were all girlsfrom way back when, and we just had a wonderfultime,” Gray said.

Dear Friends,

In my last light-heart-ed note, I promised, “I willendeavor to keep youinformed of opportunitiesfor involvement.” When Ipenned that statement, Inever imagined that suchopportunities would in-volve emergency responseto a devastating fire. However, as you likelyalready know, on October26, 2010, a fire erupted atEdwards Commons andconsumed most of thebuilding. Thankfully, therewere no injuries as a resultof the fire, and otherbuildings on campus areunaffected. The cause ofthe fire remains undeter-mined and is under inves-tigation by the Independ-ence County Sheriff ’s Department, the ArkansasState Police, and the Batesville Fire Department.

For many of us, Edwards Commons or “Ed’s” asit was commonly identified during my tenure, was acampus institution. As a venue, Ed’s has playedhost to numerous concerts, comedic performances, study sessions, and impromptu debates. It is where Ilost countless games of pool, embarrassingly partici-pated in several poetry slams, consumed enoughbreakfast cereal to accumulate an untouchablerecord, received my daily dose of less-than-accuratecampus gossip, and regularly exchanged intelli-gence on professors. Most importantly, it’s where Ispotted and first spoke to my wife. Some of yourstories intersect my own; many others of you sharesimilar experiences. Certainly, you recall finalsweek when, for a brief moment in time, professorsand student life staff became our personal minionsand served up midnight breakfast? It is such historythat prompted President Weatherman to recently

describe Ed’s as “the heart ofcampus life.”

While this fire hascaused obvious disruption,as is Lyon’s tradition in theface of such adversity, it iseducation as usual for thestudent body. However, nobody can properly functionwithout its heart. There canbe no normalcy withoutrestoration of this institu-tion. In the interim, stu-dents are left without a cen-tral place at which they canfoster the sense of commu-nity that we experiencedand cherish. For that rea-son, there must be and is asense of expediency sur-rounding emergencyresponse and long-termplanning.

Many of you haveinquired regarding how you

can assist Lyon as it navigates this difficult period. Ihave been informed that the best way for me tohelp is by simply making a gift to the Annual Fund.I invite you to join me in doing so. If you wish, youmay indicate that your gift is to assist with“Emergency Response.” Lyon’s online donation linkis located on its website, www.lyon.edu/support-lyon-donate.htm. I also invite you to watch for updateson Lyon’s website. During this difficult time, it isfitting that we recall our college’s motto:“Perseverance conquers all, God willing.”

Sincerely,

Alumni Givingby Class YearA number of Lyon alumni give generouslyevery year. Many external funding agenciesinterpret this Alumni Participation Rate (APR)as a tangible measure of alumni satisfaction. Inother words, every donor, not just every dollar, counts! For example, your contribution willhelp raise Lyon’s APR, which in turn may con-vince a foundation that Lyon is worthy of itssupport also; your $10 now may be just thevote of confidence needed to secure a multi-million dollar request from a foundation in thenear future. Consistent annual giving, even if itis $10 each year, helps your Alma Mater bydemonstrating to other potential funders thatyou care about her future. For more informa-tion about how you can strengthen Lyon’s rep-utation by showing your financial support, please contact Gina Garrett, Director ofAlumni Services and Development, at (870)307-7557.
