From the Principal’s DeskI have almost completed my rst year as Principal at Lynwood, and I continue to be impressed with the work of my students and sta , and the dynamics of the wonderful relationships between them all. Recently, we said farewell to the Year 12 students at a lovely Presentation Ceremony where the warmth of long term relationships between students and TAG teachers was clearly evident. I would like to acknowledge Senior School Manager Sacha Pryer who was in this role just for Term 4 and led the organisation of a number of events, including the Year 12 Breakfast, the nal school assembly and the Presentation Ceremony, ensuring that they were all as special as everyone wanted them to be. Sacha was supported by our new Deputy Principal of Senior School, Natalie Simms, who started at Lynwood at the end of Term 3. Natalie also had to hit the ground running and has made asigni cant impact in the school already, bringing a wealth of experience, knowledge and enthusiasm to the role. Well done Sacha and Natalie for ensuring that the nal weeks of our Year 12 students were ones they will fondly remember. Elsewhere in this newsletter there is more detail about the night and our award winners, but I do want to say how proud I am of our Year 12 students. Such a respectful, caring and committed group of students, they are all going to be missed for their positive and happy in uence on our school. I am looking forward to hearing how they all go as they move into the next exciting stage of their lives.

Given the time of year, there are many events being held to acknowledge the outstanding work of our students. I recently attended the Specialist Soccer Program Awards Night at Gosnells Golf Club, and this, again, was a terri c event where all students from Years 7 to 12 were immaculately dressed and enjoyed great food in a wonderful setting whilst celebrating award winners from every year group. Well done to teachers Ann Gourley and Tony Campbell for providing such a wonderful event and congratulations to all of the award winners.

The Year 6 students coming into Lynwood Senior High School next year were treated to a very enjoyable Transition Day Program on 24 November. Head of Lower School, Hayatti Miller, developed a great program for the day where students enjoyed a range of activities in a range of learning areas. The day was very warm and it was great to see the smiles and con dence showing on the faces of these students as they got to know the sta , each other and the school over the course of the day. Hayatti was assisted by a big team of students from Year 7s, 8 and 9, and our peer leaders, who did a fantastic job of looking after everyone on the day. Thank you to all sta and students involved in making this day a success.

We hosted a Year 6 Parent Information evening this week, and it was so well attended that we ran out of seats in the gym! Our enrolments are climbing and we have currently taken in around 30 more Year 7 students than we expected for next year. Our parents and students are wonderful ambassadors for our school and word is spreading about the happy, positive school environment that we have at Lynwood, and the high level of achievement that our students are gaining. Thank you to our community for supporting us so well!

Amber Lucas, Year 10 Coordinator, organised a River Cruise for our students on Monday 27 November. Needless to say, it was another well attended and well executed event. Thank you to Amber and all of the sta who supported this lovely event.

“Good schools make a di erence but parent involvement better predicts a child’s academic performance than the quality of the school he or she attends...in other words, while both school and family involvement are important, the role of the family is stronger when it comes to academic success...this held true even when the researcher tested race, SES, marital status and family size”Parcel et al 2012

This quote re ects the very heart of the work we do in schools everywhere and it deeply resonates with me as a school principal and as a parent. If any school hopes to enable children to be successful students, it must be with the support of the family that surrounds each and every individual child.

Lynwood Senior High School has demonstrated a strong commitment to working in partnership with parents, students and sta to enable each child to do his or her best. This has been evident in attendance rates; since 2013, all year groups have achieved over 90% attendance, which is better than the average across all public schools in Western Australia. This is a fabulous trend and I would like to thank the parents and guardians of this school community for their ongoing commitment to their child’s education.

There is a huge body of research linking attendance to student achievement. In a major study linking poor attendance to lower NAPLAN results, they found that just missing one day of school has negative consequences for a student’s academic achievement. Somewhat embarrassingly, Australian students skip more days o school than almost any other developed country. This study found that there really is no safe level of absence students can get away with before their grades begin to su er. The report’s co-author Stephen Zubrick from the University of WA stated: “A 10 day period of unauthorised absence in a year is su cient to drop a child about a band in the NAPLAN testing”. I don’t think any parents/guardians want to see that sort of negative impact on their child’s learning and I urge all parents and guardians to ensure that, as their child moves through high school, their attendance continues to be a priority. The best gift a parent or guardian can give a child is making sure they attend school every day, every week, every year.

School Board NominationsYou will shortly receive a letter inviting nominations from parents and guardians to join the new School Board from the commencement of 2018. Please consider joining this very important committee – business experience is not required. If you feel that you can contribute to the development of the school and are available to meet twice per term, please consider nominating.

And nally, thank you all for your support of Lynwood Senior High School this year. I am looking forward to working with my school community in the coming years, on the directions that are being established in our new Business Plan which will be made available to you during Term 1, 2018. In the meantime, I wish all sta , students and their families a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year.

School Captains 2018I would like to acknowledge and congratulate our new School Captains Ivy Cortez & Lilly Fasavula.

These young women have had magni cent role models with Georgina Nyakundi and Kieu Dang in 2017 and I am sure they are more than ready to step out and show their leadership ability next year.

Well done ladies and I look forward to working with you and the student council in 2018.

LEAF As the school year draws to a close, it is time to re ect on a busy, exciting, frustrating and hectic 2017.

The Year 11s arrived bright eyed and bushy tailed. They have certainly accomplished more than they thought they would and have matured in ways they probably haven’t even realised. They should be very proud of themselves and we hope they take the time to compare their Year 10 and Year 11 reports, to see just how far they have come.

We have also farewelled another group of Year 12s. Congratulations to those students who achieved their WACE. We are very proud of the students who survived to the end of Year 12. They worked very hard and achieved some solid results. Most of the students are now working or have apprenticeships lined up for the new year. We hope that the life lessons learned in the program will stand them in good stead.

A quick recount of 2017. First of all, the camps. We started with the “Get to Know You” Camp at Bickley Camp ground, where teamwork was established and lots of ‘fear of heights’ were overcome. Then came the Kalbarri Camp: abseiling, canoeing, hiking/prac teacher rescuing, sightseeing and swimming o the town jetty. All in all, we had a great time. Finally the record breaking Cape to Cape Trek -the most kilometres walked in a day (NEVER AGAIN) and the WHOLE group jumped o the jetty.

On top of this, frames for netting 15 fruit trees were constructed and installed. New lettuce garden beds were installed around the interior perimeter, fruit trees and roses were pruned within an inch of their lives, (but have rebounded sensationally), a variety of crops have been planted and harvested, new foods tasted, shelving was constructed and installed in the cream shed and we did endless, continual weeding.

There was also three very successful two week Work Place Learning blocks, where many students were either o ered apprenticeships and/or jobs.

Last, but not least, there were the academic courses; Maths, English, Outdoor Education and Woodwork. We would like to thank all the sta who were involved in delivering these programs to our students - Mr Stanton, Mr Fisher, Mr Prew and Ms Scaramella, for their patience and understanding in working with us to ensure the academic success of these students.

As you can see, busy, busy busy! None of this would be possible without the support of our two awesome Education Assistants, Mrs Amanda Coad and Mrs Kylie Farrall. Thank you so much for your help throughout the year. We would also like to thank Vern Chappells, the all-round good guy, for his advice and for letting us use his tools.

Here’s to 2018!Alison Lethlean and John Warren

Art DepartmentMr Hotinski’s Art ReportFriday 24 November saw Year 6 students from various primary schools attend Transition Day activities in the Art Department. Students were given a brief introduction to the variety of courses and the facilities o ered before participating in constructing a mosaic, using coloured tiles. When completed, the mosaic panels will be mounted and displayed on a wall within the school as part of the Art Department’s contribution toward environmental sustainability. The tiles are recycled from various sources and we welcome all contributions of tiles left over from renovation projects. The theme of the works varies with the current design based on a water environment and turtles. The Year 6 students were enthused by the idea that they will be able to see the completed panels on display next year and that they contributed to the nal Artwork.

Work on the Year 10 Sculpture project has progressed well, with students now adding the nal nishing touches to the Artwork, using wood staining techniques. Students selected the design from a number of Aztec cultural symbols before dividing into four groups for each of the panels. The cooperative group work has been highly e ective with students liaising with each other to ensure consistency of the design. With the end of term approaching rapidly, the Art Department is planning on displaying the work in term one next year before nding a permanent home for it, possibly in the Sta courtyard. Thank you to the Design and Technology Department for granting students access to cutting equipment as well as a steady supply of recycled o cut wood.

In Media, students have been exploring the world of comic books, producing their own page depicting a short event . Both hand drawing and computer graphics have been used in the creation of these pages.

Ms Allen’s Art ReportThis has certainly been a busy year for the Art department! From our Year 11 Art Gallery visit in term 1, our Art Showcase term 3, to the Black Swan IEC visit co-ordinated by Catherine Trainor in term four and all the events in between and extending into the now, the Art Department never has a dull moment.

We have an amazing amount of talent within Lynwood Senior High School, and were lucky enough to have a large group of Year 9 students selected to participate in the Riverton Forum Art Gallery Space over the last school holidays. This event was the rst ever event held by the Riverton Forum, and we have already been invited to participate again next year, in what they hope to make an annual event. In keeping in line with our school priorities. The theme was Sustainability, and students created either sculptures or posters using recycled materials. This was a wonderful event, which further cemented our ties within our community.

LOTE Students from Years 7 to 10 participated in a writing competition this term. All students worked really hard and produced work to a ne standard. Six of our student’s entries were chosen, representing the school to compete with entries from other WA schools. Two students from Lynwood won third and fourth place in the competition. Congratulations to Kayla Ma in Year 10 and Su Zhen Leong in Year 9.

Year 7 Transition Day Lynwood has been busy preparing to welcome the 2018 year 7 students into the Lynwood SHS community. As part of our preparation for them, we held a highly successful Year 7 Orientation Day. On Friday 24 November, we welcomed approximately 160 excited and somewhat nervous Year 6 Students to provide them with a taster of a day in the life of a Lynwood High School student. The Year 6 students participated in a range of fun and hands-on activities which provided them with an opportunity to sample di erent subjects, and ended with a very loud and fun- lled sporting competition. The Year 6 students were also provided the opportunity to become familiar with our school, meet some of the wonderful sta at Lynwood SHS, whilst forming relationships with their new peers and some of our incredible peer leaders.

This major event was then followed up on Tuesday 28 November with a Year 6 parent BBQ. The evening was important for parents and students to meet the Student Services team who will look after them throughout their high school journey, whilst also having the option to have a tour of the school or simply to mingle, enjoy a sausage sizzle whilst listening to the very talented Lynwood SHS band.

Both events were a brilliant success and we are very much looking forward to having the 2018 Year 7 students join us next year.

Home EconomicsYear 11 Children, Family and CommunityIt is always a highlight of the year when the pre- school children from Parkwood Primary School visit to cook a healthy snack with the Year 11 Children, Family and Children students. The cooking forms part of a task where students investigate obesity in childhood and look at possible solutions to manage the issue. The same class also put together a shoebox for Operation Christmas Child. It involved the students working in pairs to make and purchase items to go into the shoebox. Students had to supply something for hygiene, something for school, something to wear, something to play with, something to love and something special.

C Webb - Teacher in Charge Home Economics

Year 11 HospitalityIn a new initiative for Home Economics, Year 11 students have completed the rst four competencies toward their Certi cate II in Hospitality, to be completed by the end of Year 12.Students are currently completing their rst block of work placement in cafes and restaurants around the Lynwood area. This experience will prepare them for and highlight the relevancy of their studies in 2018.

Year 10 Food TemptationThe students in Food Temptations would agree that French cooking isn’t rocket science but technique is the key factor in producing recipes. Some interesting and challenging recipes were implemented in class as part of a task. Among these were Coq-au-Vin, Steak au Poivre, French Cruller (a ring-shaped choux pastry topped with chocolate) Tarte au Citron, crepes and gougere ( a choux pastry lled with ham in cheese sauce). Through these recipes, cooking methods were also investigated. These mainly included frying, baking and braising.

Another challenge for the class was to create a perfect cheese sou é. Students were required to work out the dos and don’ts of a successful sou é recipe. For example, overcooking will cause the texture to go

rubbery, and sprinkling breadcrumbs onto greased ramekins will help the sou é grip to the sides and rise. In addition, the edges of the sou é dish must be clean for even rising. Students then had to apply what they had learnt to adapt the recipe to make a chocolate sou é. The students surely demonstrated their skills as they showcased their perfect well risen chocolate sou é.Simply delicious!

Design and TechnologyTerm 4 is gathering pace, and the end of the year is getting closer. A call to add to the school Newsletter happily causes me to re ect upon the many activities pursued by our students over the past couple of months.

Mr Hardeman had his Year 11 Photography students mount a display in the library, over a two-week period. The subject was ‘Colour and Form’ and the A4 prints were dazzling. The student involvement was excellent. Alas, we have no photographs of their work.

We have had the pleasure of having a long-term practicum teacher over this busy term. Mr Duncan McGrath has spent the last seven weeks in the department, teaching a variety of classes. Two classes were involved in the production of look-alike Terrazzo stone as a base for a pot plant holder. The mixture of stone colours, polishing and varnishing, produces a high gloss, round, marble tile. The students then cut, led and welded a metal base to hold the stone. A great present for Mum at Christmas!

Mr Lau’s Plastics class has been busy with a very di erent model. The Iron- Man helmet has been a huge hit. Laying the pattern on the plastic, cutting out the sections, bending the shapes with a heat gun and the nal gluing are di cult skills to acquire. Painting the helmet and the choice of colour schemes has made the helmets very individual.

With the end of the term, we will be busy servicing equipment and repairing benches. Next year is calling already.

The Arts in the IECIEC students bene t from their experience with the Arts. Creating visual art or participating in Drama allows them to express themselves before they are able to use English language to share their experiences. They also are very talented and creative young people who welcome opportunities to showcase their skills and imagination. Collaboration between the IEC and the Art Department has resulted in two events taking place in Term 4.

Excursion to the Art GalleryA selected group of IEC students had a unique opportunity to participate in an artist workshop held at the Art Gallery of WA. The Baldock family, sponsors of the Black Swan Prize for Portraiture, has generously o ered this workshop to the IEC at Lynwood in recognition of our programs providing real substantive change to the lives of our predominantly refugee students. A day at the Art Gallery with Ross Potter was a great example of our commitment to providing unique extracurricular activities for our students. Ross was a nalist for 2017 Black Swan Prize and our students were thrilled to work with him in beautiful Art Gallery rooms.

Student AchievementMustafa Asadi was selected as a nalist for Black Swan Prize for Portraiture Youth Exhibition. This competition encourages the creative talents of young, aspiring and emerging artists, and is open to all high school students across WA. The Black Swan Prize allows entrants to showcase their work and present their unique artistic perspectives, helps build their con dence to further their art practice, and allows them to share their stories with the wider community. Considering that Mustafa has been in Australia for 1 ½ years only, this is a major achievement for a Year 8 IEC student. His exquisite work has been already displayed around our school and his contribution is highly valued and appreciated.

I would like to thank Catherine Trainor and the Arts Department for their commitment to provide IEC students with excellent and exciting learning opportunities.

Ania Duszenko - IEC Program Coordinator

EaLS Presentation EveningOn Tuesday 5 December 2017, the school celebrated the achievements of our 2017 EaLS students at the EaLS Presentation Evening which was held in the Kim Beazley Lecture theatre at Murdoch University.

The aim of the evening was to showcase the wonderful work and achievements of the Year 7 – 10 EaLS classes over the course of the year. A special thank you goes to all the students who attended the evening and presented on the night. It was a wonderful night which again showcased the level of excellence we have at Lynwood SHS.

Thanks to all the sta who attended, and for their involvement in making the evening special for both the students and family members.

This year our guest speaker was Armed for Life founder Adam Przytula. It was a pleasure to listen to his speech on the importance of wellbeing, and he was well received by the audience.

Congratulations to the following EaLS high achievers for their outstanding e orts in 2017;

DramaDrama students have been busy this semester! Years 7 & 8 Drama classes have been exploring realism and developing their characterisation skills by working on comedy plays. Students participating in the lunchtime Drama Club have been working hard during most lunchtimes to produce not one but two plays! After the success of the Arts Showcase at the Don Russell Performing Arts Centre at the end of term three, students were hungry for more opportunities to showcase their talent and perform. These hardworking students performed a comedic play for Year 6 students at their Transition day

about how easy it is to succeed in high school. I look forward to seeing what these talented students will perform next year! Amy Chapman

Library“Never too old for a Story”, was the title of an article in the West Australian Newspaper August 28, 2017. The article encourages parents to continue reading aloud to their children even in the teen years. A study by Murdoch University Literacy expert Margaret Merga found that more than half of older primary-school children were not being read to at home. The research suggested that children still enjoyed being read to beyond the early years of schooling. Reading aloud helped boost children’s listening skills, comprehension, pronunciation and vocabulary.

Within the Reading Appreciation Program (RAP) that runs at Lynwood SHS, the teacher librarians read to students, promoting di erent

picture books that are directed at young adults or older readers. The literacy bene ts of listening, reading and discussing the texts is immense for the students. Within these sessions, literary techniques are discussed, which complement the Lower School English program.

The library encourages students to borrow books from the school library, even during school holidays. Reading is such an important life skill for both knowledge and relaxation. Students and parents can also join their local public library for free membership, to take advantage of the vast array of books, resources and services closer to their home.

Happy Summer Reading everyone!

BUSINESS & INFORMATION TECHNOLOGYThe BUSIT Learning Area team of Ms Gay Homer, Mr Wayne Capes, Mr Tim Pederick and Ms Alison Simmonds welcomed back Mrs Jessica Siva from Maternity leave. Both students and sta missed her immensely and we were so very happy to welcome her back in Semester 2, albeit only for two days a week.

Year 11 Swan Valley ExcursionIn June, Mr Capes’ Year 11 Career and Enterprise and Mrs Vuori’s Yearr 12 Tourism classes researched several small businesses in the Swan Valley. The classes surprisingly decided on the Margaret River Chocolate Factory, Whistlers Chocolates, Mondo Nougat Factory, the Lolly Shop and Providore. Their research consisted of analysing the nancial aspects, marketing and production of each business in preparation for an upcoming assessment. They observed the historical aspects of the Swan Valley by visiting All Saints Church which they found most fascinating. On the completion of lunch at the Whiteman Park Café we found time to visit Yahava Co ee. They also treated themselves at each outlet where purchases were an economic lift to the area. All the businesses commented on how well the students behaved.

Year 11 Skills West ExpoIn August, the Year 11 Career and Enterprise students made their way to the Skills West Expo at the Convention Centre, Perth. Mrs Siva and Mrs Lowrie commented on how well the students behaved. All students were keen and eager to learn about careers in lm, education, accounting, nance, tourism, hospitality, construction and the armed forces. While at the Expo, students made excellent use of their time by visiting various stalls and demonstrations and collecting information relevant to their needs.

WORKPLACE LEARNINGThis year saw the ADWPL Endorsed Program again run within the Career and Enterprise Year 11 & 12 Course. It was compulsory for VET Industry Speci c Course students in the areas of Engineering and Tourism, as well as the Certi cate II Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways students. There were many successful placements, with part time employment o ered to a couple of students and the prospect of employment in 2018 for several others.

Thank you to parents for their ongoing support of this valuable program.

Soccer AcademyOn Friday 17 November, Lynwood School oval had an in ux of around 150 Year 5 and 6 children from our local primary schools. The students were participating in the Super 7s Soccer Carnival which was hosted and organised by the Lynwood Soccer Academy. The Year 7 Lynwood Soccer Academy students had the task of coaching their younger counterparts while the Year 8 students o ciated and scored the games. The students had set up seven pitches which took up the whole oval and allowed 14 teams to participate at a given time.

The Year 10 soccer students set up the BBQ and cooked up a storm while also compiling the results. The primary school students participated fairly but competitively, and there were some really close games that ended in exciting penalty shoot-outs. Everyone involved really enjoyed the experience and the teachers had an opportunity to watch all their teams perform extremely well on the day.

Zyah, Year 6 Student: “I had a really good time today and I am so excited to go to an amazing school like Lynwood”.

Declan, Year 6 Student “I have played in Super 7s in Years 5 and 6 and it was an amazing experience”.

The Lynwood Soccer students and the primary school students had a great day coaching, o ciating and playing. This was a very successful day all round.

MUSIC DEPARTMENTFour members of the Senior Band have come to the end of their high school experience, capping o their journey with two fantastic performances – one at the Year 12 Final Whole School assembly in Week 2 and the other at the Year 12 Presentation Evening on 22 of November. This talented group of musicians features students who have helped to establish music as a fundamental and valued part of Lynwood Senior High School, and the legacy they have left behind will continue to ourish for many years to come.

Congratulations to the following Class of 2017 musicians:

• Kai Wen Loh • Kerwin Nicolay • James Van Lian Thang • James Asan

The Middle Band consisting of students in Years 9 and 10 stepped up to the challenge following the departure of the Year 12s, with a fantastic performance at the Year 6 Parent BBQ and information evening on 28 November. They performed for parents, sta and students and set the bar of expectation high for next year! These students will be moving into the Senior Band in 2018 and I am very excited at what they will continue to achieve in the near future.

The Junior Band, consisting of students in Years 7 and 8, will wrap up what has been a fantastic and event- lled year for the Music Department, with performances at the lower school award assemblies. I would like to wish all musicians at Lynwood SHS a safe and happy holiday, and I look forward to working with you again in the second half of next year!
