FROM THE PASTOR’S DESKHospitality is a hallmark of the Chris an life. Those who welcome and o er generous hospitality to others (both friends and strangers alike) are heeding the command of Christ that his followers love their neighbor as he loves them. The Scripture readings this weekend highlight the Chris an virtue of hospitality. In the rst reading a wealthy and in uen al woman from a place called Shunem o ers a meal and a room overnight to Elisha the prophet, who was weary and hungry from his travels doing the Lord’s business. According to this story from the second Book of Kings, this woman and her husband eventually furnished a li le room on their roof so that they could extend this hospitality to Elisha whenever he was in the area. Their lavish sharing of food and lodging to one they considered to be “a holy man of God” led Elisha to promise this aging couple the reward of a son in the year ahead, a promise that the Lord granted.

In the gospel passage from St. Ma hew, Jesus tells his apostles that “whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.” In other words, whoever receives the Word of God and the tes mony of the disciples of Jesus with the hospitable spirit shown by the woman from Shunem will be richly rewarded by our heavenly Father. Jesus adds that “whoever gives only a small cup of cold water to one of these li le ones to drink, because the li le one is a disciple---amen, I say to you, he will surely not lose his reward.” May we all be men and women of Chris an hospitality and embrace the ancient wisdom that “hosts who entertain gods unaware are generously repaid”!

News and Notes:

Merger… The merger of our two parishes into one new parish with two worship sites (St. Maria Gore Church and Our Lady of the Assump on Church) o cially begins this coming Wednesday, July 1. On that date, the assets and obliga ons of both parishes will be combined and held by one parish with the temporary “place-holder” name of St. Maria Gore -Our Lady of the Assump on Parish. Our newly merged parish will have a permanent name a er all our parishioners have had a chance to submit nomina ons according to the guidelines that we have published (the deadline is August 1). Then a sub-commi ee of our Pastoral Council, chaired by Donna Delahanty and made up of two representa ves from each of our church communi es (John DiBello and Pa y Glennon from SMG; John Lozada and Eric Rich from OLA), will review the nomina ons and make a recommenda on of the top three choices for a parish name. The whole Pastoral Council will consider this recommenda on and then send three possible names to Cardinal Sean O’Malley who will make the decision. It is important to remember that going forward both churches will remain open, and host Masses as well as faith-forma on classes and events, socials and other gatherings as in the past. Please be generous in welcoming this structural change and suppor ng your newly merged parish as much as you can, so we survive the e ects of this pandemic and eventually thrive in our mission!

Best wishes to Donna Delahanty… A er 7 years of faithful dedica on to our Collabora ve, Donna Delahanty has no ed me of her intent to re re e ec ve July 10. I have had the pleasure of working with Donna for over 10 years and extend my hear elt apprecia on for her reless e orts on behalf of the Lynn eld Catholic community. We wish God's choicest blessings on Donna and her family as she transi ons into re rement and well deserved rest. Please join me in thanking Donna for her service.

Spiritual Communion… For those who are unable to come to Mass because of health concerns now and in the future, and for all those who long to receive the Eucharist more frequently, here is a por on of a prayer for Spiritual Communion that is composed by St. Alphonsus Liguori:

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love you above all things; I desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace you, and I unite myself en rely to you, as if you had already come. Do not permit me ever to be separated from you. Amen.

Blessings to all of you in the week ahead!

If you are visiting our parish, we extend a warm welcome. Please feel free to introduce yourself to the celebrant. If we can be of service to you in any way, please let us know. We look forward to seeing you again.

We are con nuing our series of ar cles for the Year of the Eucharist, an Archdiocesan ini a ve to invite Catholics to learn more about the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist.

Did you know what the e ects are of Holy Communion? Communion with the Body and Blood of Christ increases the communicant’s union with the Lord, forgives his venial sins, and reserves him from grave sins. Since receiving this sacrament strengthens the bonds of charity between the communicant and Christ, it also reinforces the unity of the Church as the Mys cal Body of Christ. (CCC, no. 1416)

The sacrament of the Holy Eucharist was ins tuted as spiritual food, a sign of nourishment. Thus it does for the soul what physical food does for the body. When we eat physical food, it becomes a part of us. In Holy Communion, however, instead of the Eucharist uni ng with us, we unite with the Eucharist. We become one with Christ. By being united with Christ in this close and personal union, we are necessarily united also with all others who are “in” Christ—all others who are members of His Mys cal Body. And as all good food should, it strengthens us and readies us for work. This work is to live authen c lives and be bold disciples of His Church.
