The Lycoming College Tour Choir Conducted by Dr. Fred Thayer, the choir has been widely acclaimed as one of the finest college musical groups in the East. Since its inception in 1947 by Walter McIver, the choir has presented concerts in every state east of the Mississippi River, California, Canada, Puerto Rico, Europe and Argentina. The choir had a 10-day tour in Argentina in May 2010. Foreign tours occur approximately every three years. The Tour Choir is selected each year by competitive audition from the 115-voice College Choir, which is comprised of students from all academic fields. Approximately 40 students are chosen annually to perform in two weekend tours and a 10-day spring break tour. The spring 2013 10-day tour will begin in the northeastern United States, with concerts in St. Marys, Pa., Pittsburgh, Pa., and Basking Ridge, N.J. The second half of

the tour will be in Puerto Rico, with concerts in Ponce, San Juan and old San Juan. In its seven decades of music, the Lycoming College Choir has performed hundreds of concerts including appearances at the National Cathedral, the Washington Shrine, the Crystal Cathedral, Coral Ridge, New York City’s St. John the Divine and Saint Patrick’s Cathedral. The ensemble has sung with the Gregg Smith Singers, the Chieftains and Barry Manilow. The choir has been featured twice in the Holiday Celebrations at the White House. This spring, the choir is releasing its 10th CD, “Favorites 1976 – 2013.” The choir’s repertoire consists of both religious and secular music, ranging from contemporary to traditional. The choir performs for all musical tastes, from listener to critic. The public is invited to hear this fine concert that offers all music lovers an enjoyable experience.

The Conductor and Accompanists As professor of music and director of choral activities at Lycoming College, Fred Thayer conducts three choirs: Lycoming College Choir (115 members), Chamber Choir (28 members), and Tour Choir (40 members). He was the recipient of Lycom-ing College’s Logan Richmond Professorship. Thayer’s graduate degrees are in composition with a Doctorate

of Musical Arts from Cornell University, where he studied with Karel Husa and Robert Palmer. This year, as a member of ASCAP, he received his 27th annual ASCAP PLUS award. His compositions include two operas, three works for orchestra, two works for band and more than 75 choral works. Having a long association with the professional ensemble, the Gregg Smith Singers, Thayer served as their associate conductor at the summertime Adirondack Festival of American Music in Saranac Lake, N.Y. for 23 years. The GSS and the Adirondack Chamber orchestra jointly commissioned him to write 10 works since 1982. Richard J. Lakey is the director of music at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Williamsport. He is a graduate of Westminster Choir College, Princeton, N.J., where he received a Bachelor of Music Degree in Church Music. While at Westminster, he was

awarded the Alexander McCurdy organ Scholarship, and through his music ministry has given numerous organ recitals. Lakey earned a Master of Music Education at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He has been a part-time instructor of organ and piano at Lycoming, and for the past 24 years, has accompanied the Lycoming College Choir. In previous years, the Choir has performed his “Te Deum” and

several anthems. His “Missa Brevis” was performed by the Lycoming College Chamber Choir and the Gregg Smith Singers. Paraclete Press and Shawnee Press have published several of his compositions for choir. Lee Saville-Iksic is an experienced solo, collaborative and ensemble pianist. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education from Susquehanna University,

specializing in piano. Lee is in his sixth year of part-time accompanying at Lycoming College and teaching vocal/classroom music of Loyalsock Township schools in Williamsport.

Music Department Fellowships Performing a diverse repertoire from vocal jazz to major works, the Chamber Choir is made up of Choral Fellowship recipients.

Each member receives an annually renewable $500 tuition credit. By auditioning, students of all majors may qualify for this award.

Scholarships Music scholarships are available for both music majors and non-majors. They range from $1,000 to $3,000 and are renewable each year. Money is awarded on the basis of auditions that are heard by the music faculty.
