Phone Threats

If you receive a telephoned bomb threat try to

stay calm. Listen carefully to get informaon from

the caller, such as:

The caller's gender, age, unique speech aributes

and any background noises that might be clues to

the caller's locaon. Clues about where the device

is, when it is set to go off, what it looks like, why it

was placed. An accurate analysis of the telephone

threat can provide valuable informaon on which

to base recommendaons, acon and subsequent

invesgaons. The person receiving the bomb

threat by telephone should not disconnect the call

and; If you receive a bomb or substance phone

threat, you should try to ask these types of

quesons (only a small sample):

1. What is it?

2. When is the bomb going to explode?

or When will the substance be released?

3. Where did you put it?

4. What does it look like?

5. When did you put it there?

6. How will the bomb explode?

or How will the substance be released?

7. Did you put it there?

8. Why did you put it there?

Call the police immediately.

Nofy your Supervisor.

Nofy other building occupants.

Public Safety Officers will be dispatched to your

locaon.

Follow their instrucons precisely.

You may be evacuated from your work area,

your floor, or from the building.

If there is a building evacuaon, take your

belongings and go directly to the Emergency

Assembly Point (EAP*).

Do NOT acvate the fire alarm or emergency

evacuaon system unless instructed to by the

Police. Be paent and wait for further instrucons.

If you receive a suspicious package in the mail, or

observe an abandoned box, backpack, etc. Move

away from the area and advise others nearby to

do the same. Report situaon details to the police

and supervisor.

Wishing a Farewell to B.I.S. May all yourfuture endeavours become a huge success. Missing you guys already...

NASAs nuclear rocket program*

Shortly aer Apollo 11, Wernher von Braun, one of the fathers of rocket science, proposed that we develop a reusable Nuclear Thermal Propulsion (NTP) rocket to colonize the Moon. Today, NASA engineers are sll struggling to pick up where he le off.

An interesng technical report that NASA prepared for the Space 2013 Conference and Exposion has recently been released. In it, we can find some of the latest, and oldest, ideas for a NASA-made nuclear thermal rocket that would take us back to the Moon.

ARM chips can run for ‘decades*

Even if you pay aenon to the CPU industry, Atmel isn’t likely to be a company you’re familiar with. But its low-power processors could change the way we interact with devices and the burgeoning Internet of Things.

Founded in 1984, the company focuses on embedded compung, microcontrollers, and automove processors — precisely the kind of hardware that powers the equipment we interact with on a daily basis, without ever realizing it contains a microprocessor or three.

Atmel is making waves at present for its new Smart SAM L21 family of processors, which draw so lile power they can reportedly run for decades and be powered by energy harvested from body moon.

Nano-sized audio rec. breakthrough*

The moon picture industry employed opcal sound-on-film recording for over 80 years, at least before digital recording took over. Now a team of researchers may have discovered a new way of storing data opcally on a much smaller scale — by way of recording a “nano piano” onto a plasmonic film substrate for the first me.

The group, led by University of Illinois MechSE associate professor Kimani Toussaint, used an array of gold, pillar-supported, bowe nanoantennas (pBNA) to store audio clips on a chip with dimensions that are approximately equivalent to the thickness of human hair.

Bring back the Start menu to Win 10*

With Windows 10 seemingly just around the corner, Microso plans to fix one of its most egregious mistakes with Windows 8: the missing Start menu. By now you may know the story, as the company has gradually backtracked throughout various updates since the OS launched in late 2012. And Windows 10 will bring the real thing back, albeit in an enhanced fashion that doesn’t depend on fiddly per-user shortcuts and extra folders.

The thing is, unless you’re willing to experiment with Windows 10 Technical Preview, the new version won’t help you yet. For several years now, every Windows desktop and laptop sold in a store comes with Windows 8.

While Windows 8.1 Update somewhat improves the situaon, it’s sll  no Windows 7 when it comes to ease of use.

DirectX 12, LiquidVR - AMD GPUs*

With DirectX 12 coming soon with Windows 10, VR technology ramping up from mulple vendors, and the Vulkan API already debuted, it’s an exceedingly interesng me to be in PC gaming. AMD’s GCN architecture is three years old at this point, but certain features baked into the chips at launch (and expanded with Hawaii in 2013) are only now coming into their own, thanks to the improvements ushered in by next-generaon APIs.

One of the crical technologies underpinning this argument is the Asynchronous Command Engine (ACEs) that are part of every GCN-class video card. The original HD 7900 family had two ACE’s per GPU, while AMD’s Hawaii-class hardware bumped that even further, to eight.

True or False? (Android) *

Yet another tle available on the Android AppStore. This month featuring a simple, yet mindteasing True or False based game, called, wellyou’ve guessed it: “True or False”.

Like any game it starts out simple, yet becomesmore challenging as the player progresses, withonly a few seconds per queson.

However, once you’ve goen the hang of it, it’ll sck to your handslike super glue. You’ll find thatonce you’ve started with a basiclevel you can’t help but keep on playing.

I recommend “True or False” to prey muchanyone interested in learning a variety of newthings and having fun at the same me.

As we get closer to the long weekends I want to take this me to talk to you about a topic most of you would make off as boring. The topic is Road safety.

Every year over these periods hundreds if not thousands of people die on our roads. Let's break down last year's stascs.

193 people lost their lives on our roads in 148 fatal crashes. KwaZulu-Natal had the most deaths 49 from 39 crashes. Eastern Cape with 36 from 19 crashes. Limpopo 30 from 23 crashes Gauteng 23 from 22 crashes. Mpumalanga had 19 deaths. Free State 9. Western Cape 8. North West 7. Northern Cape 6.

Pedestrians accounted for 40% for those killed over Easter 2014.

Now let us look at what law enforcement had to deal with in their aempt to get all of us to our desnaons safely.

283 323 vehicles were stopped and checked. 43,433 noces were issued. 1094 vehicles were taken off the road. 1457 were impounded. 330 drivers were arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol. 10 for dangerous or negligent driving.

So now the queson is what can you and I do to try and make sure we get to where we are going safely?

Well here are a few small things we can do that can make sure we are safe.

If you want to drink like a fish, swim at home. DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE.

Always make sure you and all of your passengers are wearing your seatbelts at all mes. Babies & toddlers should be strapped into appropriate baby seats.

Before you set off on a trip take 5 minutes to check your res. THE LEGAL MINIMUM TREAD DEPTH IS 1 mm. Also check the tyre pressure and make sure it is as per the manufacturer's specificaons.

Make sure the vehicle's window washer reservoir is filled with water and some soap/detergent this will come in handy when you need to clean your windscreen while driving.

Plan your trip in such a way that you can avoid travelling during peak periods. If possible avoid the busy main routes and make use of alternaves.

Stop at least every 2 hours to stretch your legs to rest.

Don't overtake on solid white lines, it is not just illegal but dangerous too.

The One of the defining traits of an organizaon with

a true culture of quality is that employees are free to

apply judgment to situaons that fall outside the rules.

Providing the right level of guidance is key. Too much

sfles creavity and discreonary acon, while too

lile leaves employees unclear about their authority

to make decisions and carry them out.
