    Sport Spotlight:Team Roping

    Team roping also known as

    heading and heeling is a rodeo event

    that features a steer and two

    mounted riders.

    The first roper is referred to as the

    "header," the person who ropes the

    front of the steer, usually around the

    horns, but it is also legal for the rope

    to go around the neck, or go around

    one horn and the nose resulting in

    what they call a "half head," the

    second is the "heeler," who ropes the

    steer by its hind feet, with a five

    second penalty assessed to the end

    time if only one leg is caught.

    Team roping is the only rodeo

    event where men and women

    compete equally together in

    professionally sanctioned

    competition, in both single-gender or

    mixed-gender teams.

    Cowboys originally developed thistechnique on working ranches when

    it was necessary to capture and

    restrain a full-grown animal that was

    too large to handle by a single man.

    Handicapping systems have been

    developed to even the competition.

    Today there are tens of thousands of

    amateur ropers who compete for

    millions of dollars in prize money.

    Horses in History:Reckless

    Lieutenant Eric Pedersen of the U.S.Marine Corps bought Reckless in 1952

    in Korea. Thought to be a 4 year old of

    Thoroughbred/Mongolian breeding, the

    chestnut mare stood only 14 hh and

    weighed about 900 lbs.

    Reckless went through basic hoof

    training such as learning how to step

    over barbed wire and immediately lay

    down upon hearing incoming! At first

    she stayed in the stable, but soon theMarines allowed her to roam freely in

    camp even allowing her to come into their

    tents to sleep.

    Her most significant accomplishment

    came during the Battle of Vegas, March

    2628, 1953, when she made 51 solo

    trips in a single day to the front line,

    carrying a total of 386 recoilless rounds

    (over 9,000 pounds), covering over 35

    miles a day. Reckless was wounded

    twice during the battle and promoted to

    Corporal. Reckless continued to serve

    with her Marines throughout the Korean

    war. For her exemplary service,

    Reckless was awarded two Purple Hearts

    among other commendations.

    Post war, Reckless relocated to Camp

    Pendleton, CA where she was promoted

    to Sergeant (1954), Staff Sergeant (1959)

    and produced four foals. She was

    provided free board and feed, in lieu of

    retirement pay per Marine Corps

    documents, until her death in 1968.

    Training Challenge:Fit to Ride

    neglect our own...particularly as

    winter approaches and theres no

    much time in a day. Here are thre

    exercises to help strengthen your

    core and your riding from the comof your living room!

    1. Lay with your back flat on the fl

    touching the ground. Repeat 30

    times.

    2. Begin by lying on your side withyour legs fully extended. Stretch y

    head so your elbow points out. Lif

    your legs, keeping them complete

    straight, and bring your elbow tow

    your knee. Repeat 8 to 10 times.

    3. Lie flat on your stomach. Tuck

    your toes under your feet, and lift

    your hips so that they are in line w

    your back and legs. You should fe

    your abdominals contract. Hold t

    position for 30 seconds, or as long

    as you can.
