Florida’s sunny skies, sandy beaches, lush vegetation and warm waters have attracted visitors from all over the world since the 19th Century. But

in recent decades, the Sunshine State has adapted to more sophisticated tastes and niche interests as tourists on holiday favour experiences ranging from family-friendly to foodie-focussed to outdoor adventures. While Florida’s proud cornerstones will always be its top-rated beaches and one-of-a-kind theme parks, there is so much more to this gorgeous peninsula if you know where to look.

Florida’s wild frontierWith the exception of brief summertime thunderstorms, which come and go like clockwork, Florida’s weather makes it ideal for enjoying the outdoors.

Head to the seaside piers and bridges, or rent one of the many available charter boats and soon you’ll understand why Florida is considered the Fishing Capital of the World. Think tarpon, grouper, speckled trout, king mackerel and snapper.

In Palm Beach, private fishing yacht rentals are conveniently located near the more popular Palm Beach area hotels and resorts, such as The Breakers and the Ritz Carlton Palm Beach. In the Florida Keys, experienced boaters can even bring their own vessels and enjoy free use of Coral Bay’s protected harbour, marina and boat ramp. If you’re a spear fisherman, the west

coast’s Tampa Bay is one of the best places to hunt for gag or red grouper, as well as hogfish, cobia and more.

If you’re a kayaker, canoer, rafter or tuber looking for some whitewater rapids to explore, Florida – typically known for its flat, smooth terrain – has a surprisingly good spot for this in Calhoun County’s Look and Tremble Falls, a Class I/II rapids.

Those looking for a more serene paddling trail might try Econfina Creek, located north of Panama City Beach in northwest Florida, one of the most scenic kayaking trips in the state. If you’re visiting during summer months, A Day Away Kayak Tours offers nighttime paddling tours on the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon, where tiny bioluminescent plankton cause water around you to actually glow as you move along.

A place to kick back and relaxWhile Florida’s array of activities can keep you busy, there are also plenty of ways to slip in some much-needed rest and relaxation, as simple or as decadent as you desire.

Jupiter Beach Resort & Spa and The Resort at Longboat Key Club have teamed up with Aura Jets, a private jet charter broker, to offer a four-night, five-day package that includes a stay at each resort and private jet rental between both coasts. The package includes limo transport, champagne arrivals and dinners for two.

For luxurious accommodations whole families can enjoy, St. Pete Beach’s legendary Loews Don CeSar Hotel – also called the Pink Palace – offers high-end suites as well as kids’ camps and activities on one of the prettiest beaches in Florida.

In northeast Florida, historic Amelia Island is a laid-back destination that boasts miles of wide, quiet, Atlantic beaches, where the whole gang will love horseback riding on the beach and discovering history firsthand at Fort Clinch State Park. Accommodations range from affordable hotels to quaint B&Bs to upscale resorts. Both the Ritz-Carlton and Omni Amelia Island Plantation offer children’s programs, giving parents time to explore on their own.

In northwest Florida, the Portofino Island Resort’s Spa Portofino is the ultimate in pampering, with its seaweed facial and or beachside massage. The resort’s Premier Club guests also get free rounds of golf at the Emerald Coast Golf Trail courses, daily beach chair setups, dolphin cruises and other perks.

Wining, dining and dancing the night away

A vintage Bordeaux, presented for your tasting by a house sommelier. Freshly caught grouper bathed in butter and garlic. Heirloom tomatoes sliced thickly alongside milky buffalo mozzarella. An aged Chateaubriand tenderloin, served sizzling.

If these images make your mouth water, you’ll find plenty of tantalizing dining options in Florida. Tampa’s Bern’s Steak House boasts steaks cut to order, one of the largest wine collections in the world and a famous dessert room worth visiting on its own. Miami’s Epic Hotel has two gastronomic hot spots with Area 31 Restaurant, which has a decadent brunch, and Zuma, which serves Japanese specialities. And Jacksonville’s Bistro Aix offers meat-and-potatoes classics with a French flair.

But you can also find delicious bites outside the metropolitan favourites, and many are worth it for the experience alone. Fort Lauderdale-based Windridge Yacht Charters has a rotating series of special voyages that include “celebrity pop-up restaurants” for the night, weekend brunch sailings and wine-tasting cruises. In the Anna Maria Island/Holmes Beach area, the Zagat-rated Beach Bistro has been the island’s most romantic, waterfront fine-dining destination for more than two decades. Try the garlicky, buttery “lobster-cargots.”

Post-dinner entertainment isn’t hard to find in a state known to host spring breakers and vacationers looking for fun. Pensacola’s Seville Quarter, a restored brick complex with wrought-iron balconies reminiscent of New Orleans’ Bourbon Street, is filled with bars and eateries, many featuring live music, and east of Pensacola, Destin and Fort Walton Beach host some of northwest Florida’s hottest nightspots.

known for its nightclubs and bars, particularly along Sev-enth Avenue. The Centro Ybor complex has a 20-screen movie theatre and restaurants, the intimate Ybor City Wine Bar and Gametime, a favourite among kids and teens.

Slightly off-track, tucked away on Eighth Avenue, is New World Brewery, a popular outdoor live music venue that has an impressive selection of craft brews, imports

and seasonal beers. And speaking of breweries, Florida’s craft beer scene has exploded in the last few years. St. Petersburg alone has had a half-dozen new breweries pop up in the city in the past two years.

Just north of the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse, Tequesta Brewing Company recently won a silver medal at the Great American Beer Festival. And in Gainesville, Swamp Head Brewery has special-batch release events.

For the weary traveller who wants to indulge in some retail therapy, Florida is a shopper’s haven, whether it’s for cloth-ing, artwork or antiques. Halfway between Merritt Island and Melbourne, The Avenue shopping centre in Viera is a great open-air centre with tons of retailers, including national names, local merchants and speciality restaurants.

Sarasota’s St. Armand’s Circle is famous for both its eclectic shops and its historical ties to John Ringling of Ringling Bros. Circus. Be sure to check out the enlighten-ing Circus Ring of Fame alongside local boutiques such as co-ed clothing store Island Pursuit.

In recent years, Florida has become known as a major arts

destination, with the re-opening of the dazzling Tampa Museum of Art in 2010, as well as recent openings of the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center in Fort Myers, and the designated Museum Park in downtown Miami. And there’s always something happening at Gainesville’s Curtis Phillips Center for the Performing Arts or the Lyric Theatre in Stuart. For a lesson in surrealism, visit St. Petersburg’s Dali Museum, rich in works from artist Salvador Dali’s 45-year career.

Indeed, Florida’s weather is enough to draw visitors, but for those looking for a truly unique experience – whether it’s on the water, in a restaurant or at an acclaimed art exhibit – the Sunshine State has something for everyone.

America is a country made for driving, and hitting the open road is undoubtedly one of the best ways to see this great nation. Florida enjoys some of the best highways around making a well organ-ised road trip a whole lot of fun! Northern Florida consists of a diverse landscape; from rolling hills to fishing villages to high-end islands. Start from

Amelia Island off Florida’s northeast coast and drive west. Explore the best of North Florida stopping along the way to fish, golf, hike and beach-comb.

Amelia Island

Located on the northeastern tip of Florida, Amelia Island offers an unspoiled setting for relaxing and rewarding getaways. Thirteen miles long and two miles wide, the northern and southern tips of the island make up protected park preserves, which account for nearly 10 percent of the entire island. Named among the Top 10 North American islands by Condé Nast Traveler’s Reader’s Choice Awards for seven consecutive years and a Top 25 Island in the World in 2013, Amelia Island is treasured for its long stretches of quiet beaches, natural beauty, unique history, and charming sea-port character.

Amelia Island offers visitors a window into the old America. Hav-ing resisted 20th century commercialisation, Amelia Island oozes charm and character, with upscale resorts, world-class spas, championship golf courses and exclusive restaurants intersecting with quaint bed and breakfasts and historic sites for an experience that’s uniquely Floridian. Take a stroll or a horse-drawn carriage ride through the historic city centre and shopping district of Fernan-

dina Beach. Once a vibrant, Victorian seaport village, the charming downtown Fernandina Beach has managed to retain its unique ap-peal. Today, the town boasts a beautiful 50 block historic district with many original structures dating back to the late 19th century, including many Victorian-style mansions and cottages.

Take the afternoon to swing the clubs at the luxurious Omni Ame-lia Island Plantation, which boasts an impressive 54 champion-ship holes. At sunset, saddle up and head for the shore - After all, no visit to Amelia Island is complete without a horseback ride along the pristine beach. Ride the Beaches of Amelia and Stay ‘N Country Ranch offer private horseback riding along the beach from Peter’s Point Park, located just north of The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island. From Amelia Island head west on US-84 until linking up with the I-10 just outside of Tallahassee - Florida’s capital city and one of America’s largest University towns.

Tallahassee

With its rolling hills and canopied roads of Spanish moss-draped oaks, Tallahassee defies the stereotypes most people hold about Florida. The capital city offers visitors deep-rooted history and cul-ture with ample doses of fun and authenticity. A fusion of cosmo-politan flair and Southern charm defines the city. If you’re in town on a Saturday check out the French-town Heritage Farmers Market for a local food journey. Then head down to Florida State’s football sta-dium for some tailgating and American football. Florida State Uni-versity’s campus makes for a romantic walk or fun day out with the family. The New Capitol Building rises at the centre of Tallahassee’s downtown, next to the more classic Old Capitol. A gallery atop the 22-story New Capitol provides a sweeping view of the hilly city and

its tree lined streets. A 10 block historic district preserves the town’s gracious old homes along a linear park, along with a historic inn, bars and restaurants patronised by legislators, students and every-one in between. After a night of cocktails with the city’s great minds discussing politics and quantum physics, get back on the I-10 for a short trip to Panama City - the perfect place to top up the tan.

Panama City

Panama City Beach is an ecotourist’s dream! The Gulf of Mexico is home to some of Florida’s best fishing and diving, and is ideal for kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding and parasailing. The coast-line has some of the widest beaches in Florida with amenities and beach bars always nearby. A “must-stop” in Panama City is St. Andrews State Park. One of the most popular outdoor recreation spots in the state, the 1,260 acre area has more than 1.5 miles of beach on the Gulf of Mexico and the Grand Lagoon. Outdoor enthusiasts can find hiking along scenic trails, camping along the shore, unparalleled fishing, kayaking tours, off-road cycling, diving and more. Enjoy the sunset on the Emerald Coast by driving the I-10 west about one more hour to Destin, a fresh dinner and warm welcome await.

Destin

Check in at the award winning Watercolor Inn & Resort. Nestled on the shores of the gorgeous Gulf Coast, the WaterColor Inn & Resort is a luxury retreat situated on 499 acres of expansive sugar-sand beach and coastal dune lake shores. The resort captures the essence of a tranquil getaway with the intimacy and hospitality of a traditional Southern grand hotel, providing guests with chic ac-

commodation, excellent dining, golfing and shopping experiences steps from the beach.

Destin has long been known as “the world’s luckiest fishing village,” - but anglers aren’t the only ones who feel lucky here. Just to be able to watch the sunset over the Gulf or Jet-ski out to where the dolphins play, is truly a magical experience. And there’s nothing like having a master chef serve you a dinner comprised of a suc-culent piece of fresh fish you caught yourself on the charter boat that morning. Don’t miss the Harborfront Village at Christmas for a warm weather wonderland. This inviting collection of sixty or so waterfront restaurants, nightclubs, quaint shops and exclusive bou-tiques also has a choice of more than 20 boats for all water based activities, available from the Destin Charter Boat Fishing Fleet.

Pensacola

At the end of the I-10 is the historic naval town of Pensacola and the last major stop before the Alabama border. You might be sur-prised to learn that Pensacola was the first European settlement in the U.S. This rich history lends itself to fascinating archaeological sites, allowing visitors to absorb the areas long and colourful past.

Be sure to stop by The National Naval Aviation Museum for 360 degree full motion flight simulators, special hands-on exhibits and more than 150 historic aircraft that will amaze. Furnished period houses, several museums and one of Florida’s oldest churches at Historic Pensacola Village are located in downtown Pensacola near charming shops and eateries. So next time you are in Florida, don’t be afraid to buckle up and take an adventure on a road less travelled.

If you are looking for the ultimate luxury holiday, with the finest accommodations, dining, spas, golf and shopping, head to Florida’s southeast coast. Home to many wealthy American’s, Broward and Palm Beach Counties encompass nearly 70 miles of dramatic Atlantic coast line, alongside world-class entertainment and amenities. Visitors will get a rare chance to vacation alongside the rich and famous and understand what it truly means to ‘live the good life’ with the suave and sophistication of these dynamic destinations.

A Stroll in Venice

Just up the A1A from Miami, is the ‘Venice of America’ - Fort Lau-derdale. Infamous for its beautiful beaches, thriving arts and culture and internationally acclaimed events. From shopping and art gal-leries on Las Olas Boulevard, to gondola rides on the canals, to a historic riverfront with fine dining and charming cafes this city hug-ging the Atlantic Coast has a plethora of attractions to keep visitors entertained. Just two miles north of Port Everglades, you can ex-perience a landscaped beach-front promenade, with its signature white wave wall and brick paved path. Across the street, check in at one of the many luxury hotels, browse the boutiques and dine al-fresco. Don’t miss the historic district, and the mansions and yachts dotting Millionaires Row. Stop in at the Stranahan House, a preserved 1900’s home furnished with antiques of the era or “fol-low the red brick road” of the Riverwalk through the landscaped park, down to the Arts and Entertainment District.

Palm Beach: America’s First Resort Destination

In 1893, the esteemed Henry M. Flagler declared Palm Beach as a “veritable paradise.” One of the leading industrialists of his time, Mr. Flagler found a naturally landscaped diamond in the rough when he arrived in Palm Beach. That year, Flagler set about build-

ing the largest wooden structure in the world – The Royal Poincia-na Hotel in Palm Beach, and extended his railroad, opening West Palm Beach up to Northerners who had long dreamt of a sunny, warm paradise they could access in the bleak winter months. A few years later, in 1896, Flagler opened the Palm Beach Inn, which soon became known as The Breakers Palm Beach – now a leg-endary, five-star resort still serving dignitaries, giants of finance and even a few industrialists. 18 years later, the town of Palm Beach was incorporated. Since then, everyone from Hollywood stars to heads of state, from literary and artistic icons to ‘old money’ fami-lies and international business magnates have come to enjoy this lush island as a favourite vacation destination. Take an in-depth look at some of the time-honoured resorts, explore history at the Flagler Museum, shop on the legendary Worth Avenue, and ap-preciate the architecture from one of the county’s first developers, Addison Mizner, along Mizner Park.

Reserved Elegance

While many retirees call Boca Raton, or more affectionately known as “Boca” home, particularly in the winter, the city is a beacon for quiet relaxation and fine amenities. Boca rose to prominence in the 1920’s with the Boca Raton Resort & Club designed by Ad-dison Mizner, a leading architect of the time and one of Florida’s first visionaries. The city has a stylish shopping district, a highly regarded art museum and several cosmopolitan restaurants. The relatively quiet yet wide stretch of beach creates a wonderful fam-ily environment. At night Chops Lobster Bar and the well-known Ruth Chris Steakhouse provide the perfect ambience to reflect on a day of personal accomplishments, whether obtained on one of Boca’s challenging Par 5’s or in a designer boutique downtown. Boca provides visitors with the backdrop for the perfect Floridian holiday - oh and do remember to order the Key Lime pie after the steak for the proverbial cherry on top!

Plain Sailing in Naples

Naples is a charming resort city, offering the ultimate in luxury, fresh local cuisine, great shopping, a thriving arts and cultural scene, and some of the best sailing Florida has to offer. The accolades for this well rounded Gulf city are constant and deserving, just one of the reasons Naples is a favourite stop for so many British holiday-makers.

Many retirees call Naples home, or home away from home, but in recent year’s active lifestyles focussed around outdoor activity seem to be the preeminent reason why so many people are flocking to Naples. With more than 30 miles of soft, white sand beaches, visitors to Florida’s Paradise Coast can enjoy the fun of an action-packed beach or find that perfect secluded spot. The local favourite and crowd pleasing top rated Naples Beach, has an iconic pier stretching 1,000 feet into the Gulf of Mexico. Many nearby island beaches are accessible by boat including Keewaydin Island and numerous deserted beach islands within the Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge and Everglades National Park.

Sailing the Paradise Coast promises to provide a new adventure every trip with each secluded island having its own allure. Some islands are the perfect stop for a camping trip, while others beckon for a romantic sunset moment.

Slightly more relaxed than Naples, Marco Island is the largest of the area’s “Ten Thousand Islands,” and is surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico on one side and pristine mangrove estuaries on the other. Marco Island was named the #1 Island in the U.S. and the #4 Island in the World in the 2014 TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice Island awards. Marco is a great jumping off point to either sail the Gulf or head in the other direction towards Miami and the Caribbean. Sail Naples is the area’s premier sail and yacht charter company crafting unique experiences through private crew or bare-boat options. Whether it be a two hour romantic sail at sunset or a week long excursion to the Florida Keys, boating in and around Naples is a holiday focal point.

This party city is fast becoming an art and cultural hub. The glitz and glamour of America’s fastest growing city is definitely an experience. Miami has never been hotter as a destination for fashion, film, and music. New neighbourhoods, perfect weather, a vibrant restaurant scene, and exclusive nightclubs are just some of the reasons Miami is attracting the

“it crowd” from all over the world. Miami is top place to invest in real estate, discover a new artist, or simply party like a rock star. And while the exotic lure of Miami’s nightclub and party scene may pro-vide the initial attraction, the city’s day time activities is what keeps everyone coming back for more.

Many celebs come to Miami to work, and often end up staying to play. Of course this takes the Miami experience to a whole new lev-el, upping the glamour quotient around hotel pools, in restaurants and on the dance floor at nightclubs. Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce, Jay-Z, Matt Damon, Mathew McConaughey, Danny DeVito, Will and Jada Smith, Tom Cruise, Mickey Rourke and Mick Jaeger have all lingered a while in Miami. The celebrity presence, combined with the reputation of being Hollywood’s party playground, fuels Miami’s mystique, bestowing a status that is shared in the U.S. only with entertainment industry powerhouses New York and Los Angeles.

Visitors to Miami now have an agenda far beyond the perfect sun-drenched beach experience. There will never be disappointment exploring the magic city’s lively and increasingly sophisticated arts scene. While great beaches, perfect weather and a sizzling nightlife have earned Miami its status as the world’s favourite fun-in-the-sun playground, the city is home to a diverse, sophisticated population that has sparked an increased awareness in the city’s standing in the art world within the last two decades. With a geographic loca-tion at the crossroads of Latin America and a kaleidoscope of eth-nic groups that reflect its mix, Miami’s cultural heritage has largely influenced the establishment of a vibrant and diverse arts scene.

From South American art enthusiasts to New Yorker’s heading south, taking their collections with them, the city has amassed

quite a reputation with new art installations and boutiques opening on a constant basis. Argentinian property mogul Alan Faena, now a leading member of Miami’s elite, is near completion of his brilliant development Faena District Miami Beach featuring a renovated, architecturally historic Art Deco hotel building and a phenomenal gallery off of Collins Avenue in trendy South Beach. The gallery will be home to works of art from Faena’s personal collection, as well as world renowned artists.

For a real breathtaking performance head to the dazzling New World Symphony Centre, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning archi-tect Frank Gehry. This beautiful space is home to the New World Symphony – a facility dedicated to musical education and expres-sion and world-class performing arts. Adding to the city’s perform-ing arts renaissance, The Adrienne Arsht Centre for the Performing Arts of Miami Dade County, designed by Cesar Pelli and featuring 52,954 square meters of spectacular space straddling Biscayne Boulevard is one of only four major centres in the United States featuring three separate performance facilities created to present ballet, opera, theatre and symphonic music. Not to be missed, Miami’s most premiere art event, Art Basel Mi-ami Beach, takes place this year between December 4th and 7th. The sister fair to Art Basel Switzerland has become more celebrity-packed, exhilarating and successful each year since its debut in the US in December 2002. Three days of exhibits, A-list parties, lec-tures, alternative and crossover events and ancillary exhibits rage nonstop for the international art world. Over 250 leading galleries from around the world will take part, showcasing works by more than 2,000 artists. Alongside Art Basel Miami Beach is Design Mi-ami, the premier global forum for design. Each fair brings together the most influential collectors, galleries, designers, curators and critics from around the world in celebration of design culture and commerce. It goes without saying that Miami owes a lot to its new residents. They have not only brought their own culture to the city but also a tremendous amount of wealth. Between the two, Miami seems to have a great recipe to continue to attract and engage global artists over the coming years.

FLORIDA’S HIDEAWAYS

If you yearn to get away from the hustle and bustle of every-day life; far from mobile phones, laptops, iPads and the 101 other gadgets that we can’t seem to live without, and simply disconnect and enjoy some peace and quiet, look no further than Florida’s very own islands and keys. Quaint cottages and romantic beach-side bungalows offer guests the opportunity to truly relax and wind-down. Get ready to drown out the noise and experience these top secluded beach-side hideaways.

Florida’s mainland has a lot to offer, but exploring the state’s is-lands and keys is a whole new adventure. While many have their favourites, we all know Ernest Hemingway loved the rowdy and raucous Key West, I’ve always preferred the more relaxed desti-nations. Islamorada, roughly halfway down the Florida Keys, is a small quaint town with some excellent amenities. While the town is on the map for Florida’s favourite pastime - fishing, The Moorings Village with its beach-side cottages creates an idyllic hideaway.

Anna Maria Island, just outside of Bradenton on Florida’s Gulf Coast, is only 7 miles long and no more than a few blocks wide which leaves you with sounds of waves and views of the sun-set in every direction. Visitors can enjoy direct access to pristine beaches whilst staying at Bungalow Beach Resort. Just south of Anna Maria Island is Siesta Key, consistently ranked one of Amer-ica’s best beach destinations. The island is home to 100 percent pure quartz sand, popular nightlife and a boutique shopping area.

Another favourite is Fisher Island, just moments away from Miami Beach. Secluded yet conveniently located to Miami’s International Airport, theatres, museums, art galleries, shopping and nightlife. Fisher Island represents one of the wealthiest zip codes in the U.S and is accessible only by auto-ferry or yacht. Nestled amongst an upscale private residential community on Florida’s only private pow-dery sugar sand beach is the infamous Fisher Island Club, an exclu-sive private island paradise offering world-class resort amenities.

The Moorings Village & Spa, Islamorada, The Florida KeysSituated in the heart of Islamorada; halfway between Miami and Key West, The Moorings Village & Spa is an 18-acre resort featur-ing 18 unique cottages and homes, on what was once a coconut plantation. Ranging from one to three bedrooms, each residence is self-sufficient and well equipped with a kitchen, television and in most cases, a washer and dryer. A short walk from your doorstep lies 1,100 feet of crystalline white sand, one of the largest and most beautiful private beaches in the Florida Keys. From the beach you can experience the thrill of kite surfing or the serenity of kayaking across the aquamarine waters of the Atlantic.

Bungalow Beach Resort, Anna Maria IslandReminiscent of a bygone era, the Bungalow Beach Resort has much to offer those seeking tranquillity in Anna Maria Island. The Gulf front, graciously rejuvenated classic 1930’s island style resort is nestled amongst the white sand dunes, sea oats and swaying coconut palms of Anna Maria Island. Escape to the private beach area or relax in your cottage and let in the ocean breeze. The quaint property features 15 bungalows with authentic hardwood floors, cathedral beamed ceilings, private porches and skylights while pro-viding guests with modern amenities.

Siesta Key Bungalows, Siesta KeySiesta Key Bungalows is a cosy property located on Florida’s Gulf Coast sitting directly on the pristine Heron Lagoon. The boutique Siesta Key’s accommodation offers 10 one-bedroom bungalows, some overlooking the tranquil, blue salt waters of Heron Lagoon, and others overlooking the tropical courtyard of Siesta Key Bunga-lows. Do as much or as little as you like. Take a stroll on the beach and collect sea shells or take a day time trip to nearby Sarasota. Head to The Ringling Museum of Art, lunch at St. Armand’s Circle or rest up for an enchanted night with the Sarasota Opera.

Fisher Island Club Hotel & Resort, Fisher IslandA member of Leading Hotels of the World, Fisher Island Club is where only the most extravagant and elite come to vacation, play and live. Once the private winter estate of the William K. Vanderbilt family, the award-winning, 216–acre private island resort offers world-class amenities and luxury accommodations for guests seeking the ultimate private island vacation. Alongside a 15 room boutique hotel, including villas, suites and cottages the expansive resort also features a private beach and beach club, P.B. Dye 9-hole championship golf-course, world-class tennis centre, two marinas, seven dining options, a full-service spa and fitness centre.

The theme parks of Orlando, including Disney World, Sea World and Universal Studios will always be the main attraction in the central Florida area. This year, Disney World will be opening its New Fantasyland, the largest expansion in the Magic Kingdom’s history whilst Universal Orlando Resort is building on the popu-larity of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, by bringing to life experiences and places found in and around London in the Harry Potter series. And Sea World celebrates 50 years with the “Sea of Surprises” campaign that include ‘animal ambassadors’ stra-tegically placed around the facility to provide visitors with surprise encounters with creatures of the sea. Whilst the theme parks provide great entertainment, no holi-day to Florida would be complete without having experienced the state’s fabulous beaches. So once you are done exploring Orlan-do head to the quiet beach towns of Cocoa Beach on the Atlantic Coast an hour’s drive from Orlando or the infamous beaches of Bradenton and Sarasota on the Gulf Coast, a two hour drive from Orlando. Cocoa Beach located on Florida’s Space Coast boasts wide spread beaches and some of the best waves on the East Coast make this surfing destination a must stop for the adrenalin junky and daring families alike. Over 100 surfing spots makes Cocoa Beach the ideal place to hang ten away from the theme parks for a day. Also take a tour of the historic Kennedy Space Centre, the

site for the majority of NASA’s space missions. Sarasota, a cultural epicentre is full of museums, artist stu-dios, and a thriving music scene. Famous as a Circus town and the former home of the colourful Ringling Brothers, their legacy is ever present throughout Sarasota. The Circus Museums, at the Venetian Gothic Palace that was formerly home to quite literally the ring leader, John Barnum Bailey, houses a colourful collection of vintage circus posters, irresistible memorabilia and the smallest circus ever constructed -an exact replica of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus from 1918. The palace also con-tains one of the leading art collections in Florida, with over 600 Baroque masterpieces and a Peter Paul Rubens collection that is considered to be the finest in the world. Located between Tampa Bay and Sarasota, The Bradenton Gulf Islands are comprised of two islands, Anna Maria Island and Longboat Key, accessible by free bridges from mainland Braden-ton. The ultimate beach get-a-way exists on Anna Maria Island, an exotic palm tree paradise just off the coast. Five area marinas with over 500 total slips are a home base for water enthusiasts, where boating, fishing, scuba diving, and parasailing are a way of life. Bradenton, itself is home to a small artist enclave with stu-dios, workshops and cafes that dot the tree lined streets. The Vil-lage of the Arts is a vibrant community of artists living and work-ing together in restored 1920’s and 30’s period cottages.

Beyond the Theme ParksThese ‘day centric’ cities are quickly developing night time experiences that challenge old perceptions.

While Orlando has earned the well endeared reputation as the world’s playground for wildly enthusiastic children, over the last few years a vivacious restaurant and nightlife scene has also emerged. Orlando is definitely leading this trend with well-developed areas like Universal Citywalk, Winter Park and International Drive, but even nearby Tampa Bay is quickly becoming know as a hot Ameri-can city amongst hip travellers in the know.

Referred to as “The Entertainment Capital of Orlando,” Universal CityWalk can be the first and last stop on a proper night out. The weather will always be right in Orlando, so grab a cheeseburger in paradise at Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville, and don’t forget the mar-garita. This Key West and Caribbean inspired bar and restaurant are a perfect dinner stop after a long day of being ripped through the air in the amusement parks. Once the sun goes down, continue on to a number of nightclubs and live music venues. Create a bit of your own music by heading to Rising Star Karaoke Club where visitors can perform with a live band complete with backup singers.

Pointe Orlando, an entertainment centre just off Orlando’s popular International Drive or I-Drive as locals refer to it, is a constant party every night of the week. Pointe Orlando is a mecca for everything that is truly fabulous about the city; with such an international audi-ence Orlando has developed a palate for every visitor. Drink mojitos at Cuba Libre Restaurant and Rum Bar, enjoy Greek dancing on the tables at Taverna Opa, sample the Southern comfort food of B.B King’s Blues Club and get some laughs at Improv Comedy Club & Dinner Theatre.

International Drive and Pointe Orlando are frequented by visitors and locals alike, but Downtown the local presence thrives. Night time action is centred along Orange Avenue and its intersections of Church Street, Magnolia Street, Central Boulevard and Pine Street. For something special head to one of the regularly hosted outdoor block parties on Wall Street Plaza - a grouping of various bars and eating establishments all on one street. The strip pours the taps for all taste, a zombie at Waitiki Retro Tiki Lounge, a cold beer at Wall Street Cantina, and a shot of whiskey at One Eyed Jack’s.

Church Street, the central hub of downtown nightlife scene, is also

home to unique and robust establishments. A series of craft brew purveyors to 1920’s speakeasies line downtown Orlando spread-ing their history, craft and passion.

Further north in Winter Park, the main street, Park Avenue boasts more than 140 boutiques, side-walk cafes, galleries and museums surrounded by perfectly landscaped parks. You can tuck into a pint along with fresh seasonal dishes at nearby Cask & Larder. The ‘Southern Public House’ - as they refer to themselves, offers diners southern sourced seasonal dishes, craft beers brewed on-site and fresh-shucked oysters at their oyster bar.

A short drive west of Orlando lays Tampa Bay, the pirate infest-ed city on the water. Just kidding! Today, Tampa Bay is defined by southern charm and attractive waterfront living, blending lush friendly neighbourhoods with city living. A small metropolis on the water, this town is attracting young professionals from all walks of life. Definitely worth dropping by, is Cigar City Brewing, which brews over 30 seasonal and staple beers with unique tastes from Oatmeal Raisin Cookie Brown Ale to Guava Grove Farmhouse Ale.

In the Latin Quarter of Ybor City, Tampa Bay Brewing Company serves nine house beers on tap. To soak up the booze, head down to the Columbia Restaurant, Florida’s oldest eatery serving the best “Cuban” sandwich in Tampa. And for last call the hip neighbour-hood of Seminole Heights presents Cold Storage Brewery offering five craft beers including Florida Avenue Ale and Betchy Brown Ale – all which pair perfectly with the Tampa Bay weather!

The celebratory dinners in Tampa Bay are always located at the infamous Bern’s Steak House. The U.S. Prime Beef is aged in a humidity and temperature controlled room until just right. Fish may still be king in Tampa Bay, but Bern’s deserves special attention for a special night out. Save room for desert at Bern’s, the well fash-ioned Desert Room (yes it is a separate room!) greets diner’s with a 65 page menu to ensure utter gluttony. After dinner cocktails are a must at 1920’s-inspired good times Ciro’s Speakeasy. Located in an unmarked building and requiring guests to say a password to enter, Ciro’s bills itself as beverage-centric and uses traditional and historic techniques to charm the ladies.

Tarpon: Sometimes called the “silver king of sport fish,” the tarpon is high-ly prized for its fighting ability but not valued as food. One of the state’s most popular game fish, tarpon can tolerate a wide range of salinities and are found throughout Florida.

Sailfish: Florida’s official state saltwater fish, this tackle buster inhab-its tropical and subtropical waters. Sailfish usually travel alone or in small groups. Their outstanding feature, is the long, high first dorsal fin. Known for its high, acrobatic jumps, the sailfish is a favourite of blue-water anglers.

Spotted Sea Trout: Commonly known as speckled trout, it’s a schooling species usually found in the shallow waters of bays and estuaries. It has two large canine teeth in the upper jaw and feeds mainly on shrimp and small baitfish in grassy ar-eas. One of Florida’s most popular sportfish, spotted sea trout will hit everything from top water plugs to saltwater flies.

Red drum: Commonly known as redfish, this shallow-water schooling fish is found in both salt and brackish water. It can be distinguished from the black drum by its lack of chin barbels and its more elongated body. It also has a large black spot (sometimes several spots) just before the tail. Once heavily over-fished, this species is now a conservation success story.

Largemouth Bass: Florida’s official freshwater fish, the legendary largemouth has an international reputation. Anglers come from all over the world just to add a 10-pound bass to their “life list” of big fish. The king of the lakes and rivers, a big bass will eat just about anything, even squirrels or baby ducks.

Grouper: A generic name for several deepwater species, these bottom dwellers are important to both recreational and commercial fishermen. Red grouper and gag grouper (sometimes called black grouper) are most popular with anglers. Anglers typically “bottom fish” for these species, but during the cooler months, they can be caught in shallow water by trolling artificial lures.

Snappers: An offshore species usually found at depths of 60 to 440 feet. Red snapper is pinkish to red in color, and its pointed anal fin distinguishes it from other members of the snapper family. Juvenile red snapper once died by the mil-lions in shrimp trawls, but new regulations have helped this species bounce back. Red snapper are considered one of the finest food fish found in Florida waters.

Mackerels: This family includes both king mackerel and its smaller cousin, Span-ish mackerel. These fish can be found in the western Atlantic Ocean from Maine to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and into the Gulf of Mexico. One of the state’s top ocean predators, kingfish are the favourite target of tournament fishermen.

Reel it InWith more than 7,700 lakes, 10,550 miles of rivers and 2,276 miles of tidal shoreline, Florida has no shortage of places to fish. It’s no wonder the state has produced more than 900 world records-that’s more than any other state or country. Not to be outdone by the Atlantic or Gulf of Mexico, Florida’s freshwater fisheries comprise 3 million acres of lakes, ponds and reservoirs, and approximately 12,000 miles of fishable rivers, streams and canals-with no closed seasons. The recreational fishery resources alone in these waters provide entertainment for more than 1.4 million anglers annually. Quality Florida fishing holes exist all over the state, and from marinas in St. Pete’s to cantinas in Key West, colourful conversa-tions take hold on the state’s best places to cast a line. The Florida Keys, a historical crowd favourite, are bordered by the Gulf of Mex-ico on one side and the Straits of Florida on the other. Beyond the

reef, the water plunges to depths of over 1,500 feet. Here, colour-ful dolphin fish teem just below the surface along mats of floating Sargassum grass or pieces of driftwood. Billfish, the biggest prize of them all, cruise out there too. The Keys are surrounded by miles of shallow sand and grass flats. Here, species like the bonefish root out crabs, shrimp and small fish in water as shallow as six inches. Beautiful flats are found on the Atlantic side of the Keys and in the fabled backcountry, a region of uninhabited mangrove islands on the Gulf Side of the island chain. Backwater fishing, while not on the wide open water, brings its own unique set of challeng-es. Fishing from a pier is a popular pastime for many landlubbers around Tampa Bay. Piers offer anglers a chance to fish waters that cannot be reached from shore or wading. Many popular sport fish hang around fishing piers because they provide structure and food.

Nothing brings a bigger rush on a relaxing holiday than catching a jumping sailfish off the coast of Florida.

While only a select few, here are some of the most common fish found in Floridian waters:

For years a lesser known stop when compared to nearby Orlando and Tampa Bay, St. Pete’s is start-ing to craft a reputation of its own, quite literally. This vibrant Gulf Coast city enjoys a picturesque harbour dotted with sail boats ready to explore the vast Gulf of Mexico. Besides flocking to the beautiful wide san-dy beaches, visitors to St. Pete’s, or St. Petersburg’s if you want to be formal, are heading to the city’s

many craft breweries or laid back watering holes to enjoy a unique, locally crafted lager. While established restaurants catering to sea-food and fish lovers are in abundance, the local craft beer scene has really started getting St. Pete’s noticed as of late and attracting some serious worldwide attention for this rising city on the water. The city is home to the state’s oldest and newest craft brew-ers. Roughly 14 craft brewery operations dot St. Pete’s from Tar-pon Springs to Treasure Island, with new ones popping up all the time. The special attraction being many of the independent brew-ers are able to experiment with flavours and content - with labels being produced in small batches not available elsewhere. So have the local bartender yank down the tap, order some oysters and hot sauce, and settle into the Gulf lifestyle in St. Pete’s. Just like California’s wine country the breweries of St. Pete’s are spread over roughly an hour’s drive. Some in newly refurbished warehouses, some in dimly lit kitchens right on the beach, but all are creating unique tastes and refining the city’s reputation. The chance to experience craft, artisanal beer right where it’s made, talk with the brewer, enjoy samples with other beer nuts and even take some home is an opportunity not to be missed. Here are some of our favourite stops in Florida’s “Beer Country.”

3 Daughters

This former plumbing supply building on the edge of the Ware-house District and Grand Central District is getting some serious

respect for their barrel-aged stouts. 3 Daughters is home to a 30 barrel brew house, 2,000 square foot tasting room, and a lot of fine brews. Check out the Summer Storm oatmeal stout for something beyond unique.

Barley Mow Brewing Company

If you haven’t heard, America is fast becoming an IPA country. What is an IPA you ask? Indian Pale Ale, they are smooth, strong, and popular and the Brits might have a crush on them soon enough. Striking off a craze in America from Boston to San Francisco and back to St. Pete’s, Indian Pale Ales are what attracts the fan base and what makes the Barley Mow a delightful stop on your craft brew journey. With 14 taps on hand, Barley Mow is rather small, but the flavours are big, try the Grapefruit Pale Ale, after all it is Florida!

Dunedin Brewery

Soak up the history in Florida’s oldest craft brew house, Dunedin Brewery is a charming operation with live music and a Scottish touch. The Red Head Ale is a popular selection, most likely homage to an inspirational figure from the Old Country. This local is steeped in tradition and aims to provide a sense of community in the St. Pete’s area, along with the best tasting micro-brews in Florida.

Rapp Brewing Company

This small warehouse operation breathes new life into forgotten styles like Gose and Lichtenheiner, with a 20-tap tasting room and wide array of finely crafted German-centric brews, Rapp Brewing is starting to put older, well established labels on the back leg. Rapp’s Berliner Weisse a low alcohol wheat beer is refreshingly delight-ful in Florida’s sun, pair it with the day’s fresh catch for a sublime experience.

Florida’s shopping scene has changed dramatically from the days when a bag of oranges and a ‘Greetings from Florida’ snow globe were typical tourist purchases. To-day the state offers a treasure of trendsetting items, from unique fashions to cutting-edge home décor, and great values on a variety of items.

Miami Chic

The darling of fashion editors, Miami draws serious shoppers from around the world who come to check out designer showrooms, one-of-a-kind boutiques boasting home-grown talent and a great collection of vintage clothing options. One of the coolest places to shop in town is Lincoln Road, a lushly landscaped tropical promenade originally designed by Mi-ami architect legend Morris Lapidus. Once the “Fifth Avenue of the South,” the stomping ground of jewellery-laden matrons in the 1950s and 60s, Lincoln Road today draws a more diverse crowd. Insiders come to “The Road” for its eclectic mix of national retail chains and funky boutiques showcasing local designers, jewellery and other one-of-a-kind items. Those who like their furniture aged will love hidden gems like the Lincoln Road Antiques and Collect-ibles Market and Homestead’s Main Street Antique District, home to a plethora of quaint shops and cafés. The glitzy Ocean Drive at the heart of South Beach, known as the “Capital of Cool” is bursting with beautiful people, boutiques with youthful fashions and unique accessories. Ocean Drive is a must-see, but shopper’s in the know, head to Collins Avenue Fash-ion District, a dazzling collection of hip designer stores spread be-tween 5th and 9th streets for sophisticated finds. Housed in an Art

Deco mansion, Webster Miami offers not just clothes from design-ers like Proenza Schouler, Balenciaga, Repossi, Alexander Wang and dozens more - but also a ground-floor cocktail lounge, a roof-top bar and wonderfully random accessories. Miami’s Design District consists of 18 blocks of interior design showrooms, home furnishings and furniture studios that are open to the public. With a synergistic blend of art, architecture and de-sign, the district occupies top names like Holly Hunt, Knoll, Tui Life-styles and Waterworks, all strolling distance from one another, while hip restaurants and art galleries have sprung up on every block. And while Miami has more boutiques and shopping streets, the best buys of Florida often lie further north in Orlando.

The Tribe’s success as a sovereign nation and unbending stewardship of a unique ecosystem (the only one of its kind), the Florida Everglades, has led to several successful enterprises that have become celebrated cultural and entertainment hot-spots in the heart of South Florida - where travellers can find adventure, the unexpected, and the unexplored.

Miccosukee Indian Village & Airboat Rides

When American journalist Marjory Stoneman Douglas coined the Florida Everglades the River of Grass, she hadn’t been aboard a Miccosukee airboat ride. If she had, she would have seen her imaginative metaphor in the literal sense. Visitors to Miccosukee Indian Village & Airboat Rides can glide swiftly through vast, pristine Florida Everglades and lose sight of where water ends and grass begins as each blends seamlessly with the other, painting a breathtaking landscape that stretches for miles. Along their air-propelled journey, visitors can see and be seen by the native wildlife from above and below including great blue herons, ospreys, kestrels, American alligators, and many others – and speeding past cypress islands, sloughs, and schools of fish, they’ll visit an ancient Indian camp that’s been owned by the same Miccosukee family for over 100 years. Here’s a taste of trivia that thrills: did you know that an adult alligator can have up to 80 teeth? During a world-famous Alligator Demonstration at Miccosukee Indian Village & Airboat Rides, you can get close enough to count. The instruction is simple; sit at the edge of your seat. The encounter usually goes something like this: An experienced demonstrator manoeuvres himself atop a massive alligator (American alligators can grow up to 15 feet long) and somehow immobilizes the Goliath. It looks like a precarious position to be in; the audience holds their breaths. Now he releases his grip – and to everyone’s surprise – the gator stays still. Then, the demonstrator puts his hand inside the gator’s gaping mouth. Another breath hold. Suddenly, the alligator forcefully jerks his stout body – over a half ton of pure muscle – and snaps his powerful jaws shut. Faster than the eye can discern, the demonstrator’s hand is back by his hips. He’s unscathed. The audience can breathe again. It may come as a surprise to know that as dangerous as they may seem, the live-capture techniques demonstrated in the shows have been a very practical – and routine – part of daily life for Miccosukee living in the untamed Everglades for centuries. Not only can brave feats be experienced daily, but also the Miccosukee Museum offers a rare opportunity to be transported back in time and experience ancient Miccosukee customs in modern day. Visitors can tour the chickee pavilion and let a guide illustrate essential aspects of daily life, like the smouldering fire always at the centre of the cooking chickee, where Miccosukee

women prepared traditional meals. Native artisans also craft bead-work, carve woodwork, and weave intricate patchwork right in front of visitors’ eyes.

Miccosukee Resort & Gaming

Visitors to Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida can journey into the heart of the Everglades to find their adventurer’s spirit, and then head indoors to continue their exciting voyage at Miccosukee Resort & Gaming with seemingly endless opportunities for world-class gaming. Touted as the home of the highest payouts and the most promising possibilities, the facility offers over 1,700 gaming machines, High Stakes Poker and Bingo, and cash giveaways - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The entertainment continues with the diverse live events hosted at the world-class venues under the same roof. For those seeking absolute relaxation and pampering, the Resort offers 302 luxurious guest rooms and is equipped with state of the art recreation facilities, including a temperature-controlled pool and a full service salon and spa. If visitors are travelling with little ones, kids’ play areas, a recreation arcade, and child-care services can provide the much needed relief and peace of mind parents crave. The Resort is also where some of the best Miami dining is housed. You don’t have to know how to pronounce the exotic sounding names of the restaurants - like Empeek Cheke, the Resort’s fine dining restaurant that features haute cuisine from an award-winning chef, or Empeeke Aaweeke, a buffet of international flavours with an Everglades view – to appreciate native favourites including wild boar, American Bison, and even alligator.

Miccosukee Golf & Country Club

In Miami, the grass is greener on the other side and Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida has the grounds to prove it. Home of many LPGA and PGA events and the brainchild of world-renowned golf architect Mark Mahannah, Miccosukee Golf & Country Club just might be South Florida’s best-known golf gem. Visitors can putt where the pros have played in a challenging course sprawling over 6,700 yards of prime Miami real estate, featuring 27 distinct holes par 72.
