Every New Year tradition dictates that we come up with several ways to better ourselves. Usually, it is the

same resolution every year for a majority of Americans. We promise to eat less and exercise more. Yet very

few of us resolve to spend more time doing the things we enjoy.

Last year, we chose to throw conventional resolutions out the window and do something for ourselves. We

resolved to do something we had always wanted to do: create the premier luxury and exotics automotive

magazine. Now, several months and four issues later Luxury Auto Direct Magazine has a circulation of

80,000 and is enjoyed by automotive enthusiasts nationwide. However, the magazine never would have

been successful without help. And for that reason, all of us at Luxury Auto Direct would like to thank our

readers and advertisers, without which this would have never been possible.

In a short time, we have formed solid relationships with our advertisers and received numerous letters and

emails from our readers’ filled with compliments and suggestions. The ideas are very much appreciated

and we will continue to improve every issue. Our goal is to provide our readers with the ultimate luxury

automotive magazine.

DODGE DELIVERS ULTIMATE PURPOSE-BUILT, STREET-LEGAL TRACK CAR

he all-new 2008 Dodge Viper SRT10® ACR — short for American Club Racer — made its public debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November.

The latest addition to Chrysler LLC’s Street and Racing Technology (SRT) family of performance vehicles, the all-new, 600 horsepower beast is a street-legal Viper engi-neered to dominate on the race track. Because it is street legal, die-hard Viper and track enthusiasts can drive their car to the race track, run it at top speed on the track and then drive it home. “With the all-new 2008 Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR, SRT has taken the ultimate American sports car and injected it with an extra dose of racing DNA,” said Mike Accavitti, Director - Dodge Brand and SRT Global Marketing and Com-munications, Chrysler LLC. “With the Viper SRT10 as the starting point, SRT engineered a combination of reduced weight, race-tuned suspension and aerodynamic improve-ments to create the ultimate Viper for the street and track.” Derived from the all-new 2008 Dodge Viper SRT10, the heart and soul of the all-new 2008 Viper SRT10 ACR is SRT’s new 8.4-liter aluminum V-10 engine that produces 600 horsepower and 560 lb.-ft. of torque. The Viper SRT10 ACR stays true to the five key aspects of SRT: standout powertrain, bold exterior styling, race-in-spired interior, benchmark braking and world-class ride and handling characteristics across a dynamic range. Its exterior styling cues offer not only bold aesthet-ics, but functional benefits on the track. These include a variable geometry “fanged” front splitter, an adjustable rear wing sculpted by CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) and optimized front dive planes. These new aerodynamic

devices are formed in high-performance autoclaved carbon-fiber. By using both unidirectional and woven laminates, the aero equipment is optimized for the mini-mum weight possible. The splitter and dive planes feature a clear-coated carbon-fiber weave on all Vi-per SRT10 ACR models. The front splitter includes three removable rub strips that provide protection and wear resistance. Supported by stainless steel tension ca-bles, the splitter is designed to absorb the energy from minor upward deflections. The Viper SRT10 ACR aerodynam-ics are tuned and balanced to maximize downforce and provide increased levels of lateral grip. Each car also includes a track extension that replaces the center splitter rub strip and fills out the fanged splitter scallop for closed-circuit events. The aerodynamic effect of the track ex-tension is a reduction in overall drag and an increase in front downforce of nearly one-third. The front fog lamps have been deleted and replaced with lightweight filler panels. The Viper SRT10 ACR features a signature two-tone paint scheme with a black center section. An optional driver’s stripe is available on a two-tone Viper Red or a Viper Black ACR. The driver’s stripe also features a sewn leather accent on the steering wheel. A clear-coated exposed weave is featured on the rear carbon-fiber wing of all two-tone and driver’s stripe Viper SRT10 ACR models. A standard Viper SRT10 monotone paint scheme is also available featuring a body-color rear wing and dual painted Viper stripes. There car is available in five colors: Viper Red, Viper Black, Viper Violet, Viper Bright Blue Metallic and Viper Very Orange. Lightweight forged aluminum Sidewinder wheels are painted gloss black to complete the one-of-a-kind exterior styling. Based on the 2008 Dodge Viper SRT10 interior, the Viper SRT10 ACR goes a step further to satisfy what racers want: the least weight possible. An optional “Hard Core” package offers maximum weight savings by deleting the audio system, underhood silencer pad, trunk carpet and tire inflator. The radio is replaced by a lightweight cover that can be config-ured to mount the included lap timer. The door speakers are

replaced by lightweight carbon-fiber panels. The Hard Core package offers a 40 lb. weight savings and provides ultimate street-legal race-ready performance. The Viper SRT10 ACR is specifically modified and tuned for track performance. The ACR suspension includes coil-over racing dampers from KW Suspensions that are adjustable for damping and ride height. The shocks are two-way adjustable without removing the wheels — a timersaver on the track — and they include a large range for compression and rebound. The KW dampers and forks are machined from solid aluminum billet, feature spherical bearing mounts, and are optimized to minimize weight and maximize performance. Lightweight forged aluminum Sidewinder wheels are op-timized by using Finite Element Analysis to achieve a lower rotating unsprung mass. Finished in gloss black paint, they wear Michelin Pilot Sport Cup DOT-approved (street-legal) race tires, providing enhanced grip on the track. Track performance is maximized in the Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR via several weight-savings initiatives. The savings were achieved with the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup Tires, Side-winder lightweight wheels and StopTech brake rotors. With the aerodynamic and suspension elements, the Viper SRT10 ACR is 40 pounds lighter than the Viper SRT10 coupe. The optional Hard Core package further reduces the weight by an-other 40 pounds, for a total weight savings of 80 pounds. The Viper SRT10 benchmark brakes are taken to the

next level in the 2008 Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR. StopTech two-piece, slotted lightweight rotors combine with the Viper SRT10’s Brembo calipers to reduce rotating inertia and unsprung mass, improve brake cooling, and significantly reduce fade even un-der extreme conditions. The StopTech rotors feature a patented curved-fin design, a key element in improving brake cooling. The StopTech brake rotors combined with the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup Tires and Sidewinder lightweight wheels combine to reduce 60 pounds of unsprung, rotating mass. The Viper SRT10 ACR stops from 60 mph in less than 100 feet. The Viper SRT10 ACR utilizes the Viper SRT10’s new 8.4-liter aluminum V-10 engine that produces a ground-shaking 600 horsepower and tire-smoking 560 lb.-ft. of torque. It features a deep-skirted V-10 aluminum engine block, cylinder heads equipped with Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC)-shaped combustion chambers, large valves and Variable Valve Timing (VVT). VVT Electronically adjusts when the exhaust valves are open and closed according to engine speed and load, allowing the engine to “breathe” cleaner and more efficiently. The two-piece intake manifold combines cast aluminum lower with smooth runners for better air flow, bolted to a die-cast aluminum upper plenum. A revised air-cleaner box with a low-re-striction filter sends air through a dual electronic throttle control into the intake module. The air-fuel mixture in the cylinders is ignited by platinum-tip spark plugs fired by individual plug coils mounted on the cylinder-head covers.

W i t h i n the cylin-ders, pistons are equipped with large-d i a m e t e r floating pins with bronze bushings for high-load ca-pability. Forged powder-metal connecting rods are secured with aircraft-quality fasteners for increased fatigue strength. Engine lubrication is managed by the large oil pump and a swinging oil pickup adapted from Viper competition engines, to ensure proper oil pressure in high-rpm and hard-cornering condi-tions. The Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR sports the latest evolution of the Tremec T56 six-speed manual transmission known as the TR6060. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels via a GKN Vis-coLok speed-sensing limited-slip differential. The 2008 Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR will be hand built at the Conner Avenue Assembly Plant in Detroit. The 2008 Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR will arrive in showrooms in the second quarter of 2008 at a U.S. Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of less than $100,000. The balance of new technolo-gies expressed in stylishly finished materials is shaped around the original cool Monster heritage. Maintaining its traditional Monster silhouette, the 696 now looks more muscular than ever. The 696 ergonomics have been improved with subtle but effec-tive changes to the riding position. A shorter reach to the bars and a slightly lower, more forward footpeg position, together with the lowest seat height of any Ducati and a reduction in weight, empowers any rider to become the master of this Monster. The chassis of the new Monster is made up of a new Hybrid Trellis frame with larger diameter tubes directly inspired by the 2007 World MotoGP title-winning Desmosedici GP7 machine. To this is at-tached a rear aluminium sub-frame. The front brake system is the envy of its class and becomes the new benchmark for the category with two 320mm discs and four-pis-ton radial calipers. At the rear, the dual-sided aluminium swingarm draws inspira-tion from Ducati Corse’s finest racing products in this area.

The instrumentation is now totally digital and continues the tradition of all Ducati’s latest-generation hypersport models, guaranteeing lightness, ease of use and a wealth of information. The new exhaust system stands out for its re-routed downpipes that now give the underside of the Monster a cleaner appearance and terminate with twin, bold Ducati-style mufflers. The headlamp unit is characterized by a new triple arc main beam, while the rear light uses modern LED technology. The unmistakable tank boasts ingenious removable outer skins which makes it easy to change the personality of the Monster 696. In line with the latest-generation Ducatis, the new Monster 696 has undergone a weight reduction of 7kg from the previous model and now becomes the lightest bike in its category (355lbs – 161 Kg). version. Measuring 696cc it boasts a series of updates and refinements. Power output gets a 9% boost to 80hp (59kW) and an 11% increase in torque to 50.6 lb-ft.This new engine continues to have the best horsepower per litre ratio of all Ducati’s air-cooled units, and it ensures a smooth and powerful delivery for a relaxed but thrilling ride in all conditions.This increase in power has been achieved by the introduction of new cylinder heads, which are now similar to the ones on the 1100 2V engine fitted to the Multistrada and Hypermo-tard. Bore and stroke remain identical to the previous 695 model at 88 x 57.2 mm, but the pistons and combustion chamber have been revised to optimize the fluid dynamics of the new ports. The camshafts now rotate on bearing surfaces directly

in the cylinder head and are supported by means of oil pres-sure. The elimination of the bearings has enabled the weight of this unit to be reduced considerably and the layout simpli-fied.Furthermore the cooling fins of the cylinders and the cylinder heads have a new shape, and an improved casting process allows them to be produced closer to one another so as to increase their number and improve thermal exchange. Like its predecessor, the new Monster 696 has an ad-vanced APTC clutch, which makes down-shifting safe and helps keep the clutch lever action light and easy, especially in urban riding where frequent stops require high use. Like every bike in the new range, the Monster 696 also has a new scheduled maintenance program that reduces costs for the customer.

The unflinching 3.6-liter Boxer engine now features two special turbo chargers, carbon suction pipes and made-to-measure intercoolers. Coupled with TechArt’s installation of a new stainless steel exhaust system with special manifolds and a high performance catalytic converter, the upgraded system, which uses a reprogrammed engine management system, re-leases up to 630hp and 605 lb-ft of torque. When tested, the Bavarian beauty went from zero to sixty (or as listed, 100km/h which is 62mph) in less than 3.5 seconds and reached a top speed of 215mph.

Power is transferred through a modified 6-speed manual power transmission servicing all four wheels. The system, fea-turing the TechArt switch path reduction and additional gear cooling, results in an extremely responsive vehicle. These inner workings combine ecclesiastically to create an unparalleled driving experience. Not only is it one of the fastest supercars on the market, it is also one of the most responsive. The electronically adjustable PASM shock absorption system in the new TechArt Turbo Cabriolet is further equipped with the TechArtT VarioPlus threaded chassis. This frame not only permits the option of lowering the system by up to 25 millimeters, but also the selection of shock absorber settings between “normal” and “sport” at the push of a button. KOENIGSEGG UNVEILS LIMITED EDITION CCX AND CCXR MODELS

oenigsegg, the experimental Swedish auto manufac-turer, has just announced their newest project. Later this year, the company will reveal the Edition models

of both the CCX and the CCXR at the Geneva Motor Show. This special edition series comes just one year after the CCX was unveiled and months after the CCXR changed the way the world would look at supercars. Last year, Koenigsegg introduced the Competition Coupe X, or CCX, at the Geneva Motor Show. It was built to commemo-rate the completion of the first CC vehicle built by the company ten years earlier. In tribute, Koenigsegg chose to give the CCX a profile that reflected its lineage. Designers ignored industry trends and enhanced the CC’s stealthy, muscular body bringing it up to date with 21st century technologies. It is aerodynami-cally strong and visually stunning—unlike anything else in its class. To match the powerful demeanor, Koenigsegg installed their own 4.7-liter V8 engine. It produces an impressive 806 hp at 6900rpm and 678 pounds of torque at 5700rpm earning it a spot alongside some of the world’s most powerful supercars. Then in March of last year, it proved it had earned the supercar title at the BBC2’s Top Gear track in England. There, the anonymous motoring maven, The Stig, maneuvered the car around the track in a record-breaking 1 minute and 17.6 sec-onds. Its impressive performance was well noted by the show’s host Jeremy Clarkson. He stated during a telecast that he had found a replacement for one of his greatest loves, smoking. Clarkson’s top two did have something in common. Both produce noxious emissions. Koenigsegg’s creation burned a gallon of non-renewable 91-octane fuel every 14 miles. With global concerns about greenhouse emissions at an all time high, the company’s en-gineers decided to do something undeniably new in the exotic car market. They were going to make a “green” supercar. In May of 2007, the company unveiled the CCXR, an evolution of the

CCX that runs on the biofuel, E85. E85, named for its 85:15 ethanol to gasoline ratio, is an appealing alternative to gasoline because it is renewable, produces fewer emissions, and has an unexpected appealing side effect. The bioethanol fuel is derived from organic plant matter (commonly corn), which survives by stripping carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. When burned in an engine, the amount of CO2 released is roughly equal to the amount the plant used when growing. Factor in the cost of maintaining and creating the fuel with the fact that an engine burns the alcohol-based fuel 25 times faster and you have a fuel that produces half of the emis-sions of gasoline. Koenigsegg engineers also predicted that changing the 4.7-liter V8 engine into a flower-fed machine would more than benefit the environment, but they were by no means prepared for what the dinos revealed. CEO, Christian von Koenigsegg re-calls, “Our engineers couldn’t quite believe the figures when we tested the car.” And for good reason. The CCXR’s engine, which is essentially the same the one in the CCX, produces a stagger-ing 1016hp at 7200 rpm and 740 lb-ft of torque, making it the world’s most powerful production vehicle.

The increase in power was expected, but the 25 percent increase was not. Since the CCXR runs on E85, which has an octane rating of 105 and vaporizes quickly cooling the combustion chamber, both the engine’s compression ratios and boost settings on the engine’s twin superchargers can be set higher than its predecessor. This results in the massive improvement in the engine’s efficiency. In addition, E85’s cooling effect—similar to what rubbing alcohol evaporating from one’s skin feels like—also reduces the chance of knocking, improving the engine’s ability to function smoothly. The findings rocked the indus-try. Now one of the world’s most impressive supercars is also the world’s most conscientious. Koenigsegg now offers the “R” upgrade on any CCX engine for $100,000 and sells the standard CCXR models at around $600,000. However, some potential buyers may want to put their orders on hold until March of this year when the company plans to unveil the Edition versions of both the CCX and the CCXR. The Edition series further enhances both models’ already impres-sive performance. Geared towards the company’s clientele who want a vehicle tuned for the track, Koenigsegg has announced they will build 14 of the race-oriented Edition CCXs and 6 CCXRs. The twenty vehicles will feature the signature styling of their standard siblings, but in dark grey and red carbon fiber. The interior will compliment the shell with ergonomic red racing seats, a special edition chronograph inspired display and Edition side step plates. To further set it apart

from the average models, the track-biased Editions will have a 5.0L twin supercharged engine increasing the CCX’s power to 888 horses and the CCXR to 1018hp. In addition to the engine enhancement, Koenigsegg added a large adjustable rear wing, a large front splitter, and custom side strakes to further increase down force. Koenigsegg has already changed the way designers and engi-neers approach new projects, from design perspective to which fuels one uses. Perhaps the Edition models will once again break records and inspire the evolution of the automotive industry into a new age of production models. The Edition CCXRs may also bring their innovative setup to the racing world. Currently, IndyCar is the only motorsport, which utilizes the benefits of ethanol-based fuels. Since there will be so few Editions made, one can expect the price to be well over that of the standard models. Estimates now are 1.9 million for the Edition CCX and 2.2 million for the CCXR Edition. While pricey, the statements made by Koenigsegg’s revolution-ary creations are priceless. They’ve managed to make the world’s first “green” supercar and hold the record for the fastest lap time at one of the most revered proving grounds in the world. The power tuning for the supercharged 5.5-liter (335.5 cu. in.) engine consists of special camshafts, a fuel cooling system and a high-performance exhaust. With BRABUS tuning, power output of the V8 compressor en-gine increases by 24 hp (23 hp SAE net) / 18 kW to 650 hp (641 hp SAE net) / 478 kW at 6,500 rpm. BRABUS also offers a special clutch-type limited-slip differential with a locking rate of 40 percent. It fur-ther optimizes traction and improves acceleration per-formance of the super sports car. The tuned roadster sprints to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 337 km/h (209 mph).

When closed the black soft-top of the Landaulet rests on the frame formed by the roof bows, and is wind and weather-proof. When requested by the passengers, the chauffeur op-erates a switch in the centre console. The roof then opens electro-hydraulically and is gently deposited on the parcel shelf in the rear, together with its integral rear window of sin-gle-layer safety glass. Opening and closing the roof takes 16 seconds. The chauffeur is able to enclose the folded roof with

a fitted leather cover, which both conceals the roof mechanism from view and completes the overall picture of outstanding elegance. This impression is accentuated by the shining white paintwork of the saloon, an exclusive finish named antigua white. Visual highlights are provided by 20-inch wheels specially designed for the Landaulet. These are also painted in white with high-sheen spokes, and are accompanied by white indicators in the front and rear light clusters in dark red. In addition, the already luxurious driver’s compartment of the successful Maybach 62 S has been enhanced in a number of important respects. All the interior trim is now surfaced in black piano lacquer, and for the extensive leather appointments Maybach has used particularly exclusive, glossy stromboli black leather. In contrast Maybach has fitted the passenger compartment almost completely in exquisite sey-chelleswhite leather. The footwell and roof liner of this high-end luxury Landaulet are also in white – the floor is carpeted in white velour and the roof lined with white fabric. A dramatic contrast is provided by inserts and decorative trim in glossy, black piano lacquer or exclusive black granite with numerous gold inclusions. opted unchanged from the Maybach 62. Passengers are welcomed into the interior by two large, single seats. These elegant seats also allow even very tall passengers to enjoy a reclining position which trav-ellers normally only encounter in the first-class arm-chairs of modern passenger jets. The Landaulet is designed as a chauffeured vehicle and features a partition. The upper section of the partition is a glass panel which the passen-gers can render opaque at the touch of a button, thanks to a liquid crystal membrane embedded in the glass. Two ultra-modern automatic climate control systems, whose parameters have been adapted to the Landaulet, ensure that open-air travel remains a pleasure even under adverse climatic conditions. As in the Maybach 62 S, the rear console is the centrepiece for entertainment, communica-tions and travelling pleasure. This is where Maybach engineers have grouped everything relating to the entertainment and pleasure of the rear-seat passen-

gers: a DVD-player, six CD-changer, a cooler com-partment with its own electric compressor and an intelligent system which holds glasses, goblets and champagne bottles safely in position. The Maybach is pow-ered by the uprated V12 engine which Maybach engineers have devel-oped further for the May-bach 57 S and Maybach 62 S together with the specialists at Mercedes-AMG. Thanks to twin turbochargers and water in-tercooling, the V12 develops a maximum output of 450 kW/612 hp from a displacement of 5980 cubic centimetres. This is continuously available between 4800 and 5100 rpm, and the engine also delivers an impressive maximum torque of 1000 newton me-tres between 2000 and 4000 rpm. ar enthusiasts from all over the country descended on Las Vegas on Sunday, Oc-tober 28th for Concours d’Elegance Las Vegas. The event featured hundreds of

the most prized collector cars in the world and inter-nationally acclaimed automotive artwork. The Concours d’Elegance Las Vegas Car Com-petition and Exhibition featured some of the world’s most elegant collector cars on the 18th fairway of the PGA golf resort TPC at the Canyons. Pristine examples of pre-war, European, exotic, muscle and custom automobiles were displayed. Since Concours is not a contest of speed, but of excellence, the auto-mobiles were judged for their style and excellence of design. In addition to the cars in competition, there were late model and specialty vehicles for the public to view. Jack and Helen Nethercutt graciously served as the Grand Marshals of the event and brought sev-eral cars from their magnificent collection including a 1909 Gobron- Brillie, a 1911 Moon, a 1934 Packard 1108, and a 1923 Hispano-Suiza. Jack is both chair-man of the board and president of The Nethercutt Collection, along with being chairman of the board and president of Merle Norman Cosmetics. The Concours was honored to have Ken Gross as Chief Judge. A noted free-lance journalist, Ken has been Playboy’s auto editor for 23 years. He is the automotive writer for Hemispheres, United Airlines’ monthly maga-zine, a regular contributor to the Robb Report and Sports Car Market, and a columnist for edmunds.com, Meguiar’s carcrazycentral.com and Old Cars Weekly.Another notable dignitary, Master of Ceremonies, F.Edward Lucas II, pre-sided over the day’s activities. George tirelessly signed autographs and posed for pictures. One of the most amazing features of the day was the automotive art exhibition. Top automotive artists showcased a wide range of styles and interpretations of the automotive world. The art exhibition featured the work of Lynn Masters, Al-exander Buchan, Bruce Wheeler, Chris Osborne, Dan McCrary, Dave Kurz,, David Chapple, Richard Pietruska, Roger Hector, Tom Fritz, and Tom Hale. The cars were magnificent. Cadillac had an especially strong showing with sixteen magnificent vehicles. One spe-cial feature, a 1936 Auburn 852 Boattail Speedster was a real show stopper. The event could not have been a success with out the tireless efforts and expertise of Ron Petersen, Jim Wolf, the Las Vegas Corvette Association, and the countless volunteers. It was truly a car community effort.

1934 Lincoln Dietrich Convertible Sedan. This 1934 Lincoln is a KB Dietrich Convertible Sedan, only 20 bodies were ever produced in 1932, 1933 and 1934. Only about five of vehicles exist today. This body has never had a fender dinged or any kind of dam-age and mechanically was a very good driver before it was restored in the early 1990s. A completely ground up (frame off) restored was preformed in 1993-1994 by Mosier Restoration, Inc. (one of the premier clas-sic car restoration shops in the U.S.) The engine was specially built by Bob Mosier. The colors on the car are correct colors with Washington Blue fenders, Cordoba Grey body and Tacoma cream reveal trim and wheels. The wood trim inside is Carpathian Elm. It has been shown at the following events: Classic Car Club Lincoln Extravaganza in Kalamazoo, Michigan 1995. Where it received 100 points and won first in class. It was then driven home from Michigan to Cali-fornia ! Shown at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in 1996 it won second in class! he V8 Vantage N400 commemorates Aston Martin’s achieve-ments at the Nurburgring where the company enjoyed suc-cess in the gruelling ADAC 24-hour race with the V8 Vantage

N24 production race car. Aston Martin develops and tests all of its road cars extensively on the Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit and the Vantage N400 recently broke the eight minute benchmark around the legendary 14-mile circuit. The Vantage N400 includes a number of technical improvements as well as enhancements to the car’s standard range of renowned co-lour and trim specifications. These include a power upgrade to Aston Martin’s 4.3 litre V8 engine, lifting peak power to 400bhp and peak torque to 420Nm. The car also comes equipped with a new Sports Pack which offers subtly different driving dynamics tailored to en-thusiasts who seek even more responsive handling. The Sports Pack comprises a unique lightweight graphite-finished aluminium wheel

with diamond turning, up-rated springs and dampers and a new rear anti-roll bar (for the Coupe). The Vantage N400 also includes a num-ber of exterior design changes, including a revised side sill design, Magnum Silver bonnet and side strake meshes, clear rear lamp lens-es and a bright finish grille. Interior enhancements include perforated black leather seats, micro-spin alloy facia trim and a unique numbered sill plaque. SeMA 2007hen SEMA began in 1963 with a mere 98 vendors and roughly 3000 attendees, no one imagined it would evolve into the most powerful automotive annual events. Today, industry giants vie for pre-

mium placement on the floor, companies big and small unveil their latest creations, and others attend to buy the products that fuel automotive commerce and bring the public up to date with the lat-est innovations and trends. This past October, over 50,000 buyers walked the expansive 2-million square feet of display space at the Las Vegas Convention Center and were met by over 2,000 vehicles on display ranging from a Dodge Bonneville racer, a modified bio diesel F-450s crafted by modification maven Beau Boeckmann of G.A.S. fame, and manu-facturer releases scheduled to hit the showrooms in 2009, giving those lucky enough to be in attendance a look into the future. Toy-ota, Ford, General Motors, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, and Honda all un-veiled future models or customized vehicles. In particular, Toyota’s

Matrix and the Solstice Speedster generated impressive crowd sizes. Many of those on display were so different, they seemed almost as if they had been stolen from the set of a high-budget science fiction movie. There was a strong focus on a “greener” automotive industry, which was reflected in the coachbuilt and concept designs. Their extreme lines governed by aerodynamics, domed glass ceilings, joystick commands, transmutable seating, and voice activated driving systems seemed purely exaggerations of design possibilities, but if previous SEMA shows are anything to go by, what looks like fiction will soon become reality. SEMA has become such a viable trade show not for the cars, but for the ven-dors. For it is they that make design dreams a reality. This year, over 2,000 vendors filled their booths with their company’s latest creations. Aisles and aisles were filled with those specializing in everything from mobile electronics to the restora-tion of an entire vehicle. Each of these vendors is classified by their product and separated into one of the eleven categories (Business Services; Car Care &

Accessories; Hot Rod Alley; Mobile Electronics & Technology; Performance Wheels & Tires; Racing & Performance; Restoration Marketplace; Restyling & Accessories; Tools & Equipment; Trucks & SUVs; and OEM). The categorization allows those shopping in a specific market to access their medium easier and also allows a free exchange of ideas between companies on the floor. Much of what happened on the floor this year won’t be revealed until next year’s show. Perhaps that is why SEMA has such a reputation for repeat vendors and at-tendees. There’s always something to look forward to. This year, as with most, SEMA doesn’t just draw businessmen and reporters, industry elite like Al Dimora, Carroll Shelby, Chip Foose, Funkmaster Flex, and others roamed the convention center—many buying parts and pieces they will use in the future for inspiration and innova-tion. Shelby even took a moment, or two, to sit down and sign autographs for what looked like an endless line of adoring fans (many of whom were no doubt inspired by his career to enter the industry themselves). SEMA 2007 had so much going on, it is difficult to summarize. But it is certain that the exchange between companies will soon resonate into the public market. New trends like global GPS systems with Internet connectivity, carbon fiber accessories, and more will soon make their way into both aftermarket saloons and manufactured vehicles. “Green” vehicles and alternate fuel sources are becoming more of a reality and manufacturers are taking note of the modern designs many of the private coach-builder companies are creating.
