Cie 1931 X,y CHromaTiCiTy Diagram
In 1931, the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) devised a method for representing color. The CIE 1931 Chromaticity Diagram is a tool intended to illustrate the way the human eye experiences light, using an x,y coordinate system. The outer boundary represents colors with a purity of 100% and the wavelength is listed in nanometers (nm).
CorrelaTeD Color TemperaTure (CCT)
Within the space exists a curve representing the chromaticity of light emitted by a theoretical piece of metal as it is superheated. As such, temperature is used to describe the color of white light. This is called Color Temperature.
If an x,y coordinate falls on the blackbody curve, it is true white light and measured in Color Temperature, or Kelvin (K).
White light that does not fall on the blackbody curve is correlated to the nearest Color Temperature, and thus measured in Correlated Color Temperature.
luXeon® WHiTe binning
When designing a lighting system, white color binning is an important consideration. Typically, most applications can take advantage of all bins, thus making use of the full distribution of products.
Full Distribution refers to LUXEON LEDs categorized from any of the available bins.
Binning and labelling is the process of separating LEDs based on their various characteristics and assigning them a specific bin code. LEDs with the same characteristics (and therefore suffix, or bin code) are placed on a reel. The bins are designed such that the degree of difference is minimal. For other technical details on product binning or labelling, please refer to application brief AB21 (LUXEON I, III, V), the LUXEON Rebel and the LUXEON K2 datasheets at www.FutureLightingSolutions.com/media_center/docs.asp

QualiTy WHiTe ligHT
Quality refers to the consistency of color in the beam of light and correlated color temperature (CCT) variations over time and temperature and CCT variation between individual products. Philips Lumileds’ advanced packaging, materials and binning competencies, coupled with their conformal phosphor coating process, enable the production of LUXEON® power LEDs that deliver the quality of white light required for a wide range of applications.
luXeon K2, luXeon rebel vs ConvenTional 5mm leD
A key element in delivering quality high-power LEDs is managing the heat emitted from the LED chip. Advanced packaging technology provides LUXEON power LEDs with unique thermal management capabilities. The LUXEON package incorporates a thermal slug that draws heat away from the LED chip, transferring it to a thermal management system. Because of the unique thermal design features and capabilities, LUXEON LEDs can withstand the industry’s highest junction temperatures, resulting in superior performance and increased light output.

Varying shades of white Highly uniform white color
Phosphor is unevenly distributed Phosphor is evenly distributed
Color Uniformity
Conventional phosphor coating method
Philips Lumileds’ patented conformal phosphor deposition process
White light is produced when blue light is shifted by yellow phosphor. The thickness of the phosphor covering the die determines the extent of the shift.
The phosphor thickness using the conventional “goop in the cup” method is uneven, producing white light that has alternating shades of blue and yellow. Philips Lumileds' patented conformal coating process ensures that the phosphor thickness is even, resulting in never before possible uniform white light.

reliabiliTy
Philips Lumileds is an industry leader in reliability, offering the world the longest-lasting power LEDs. In order to provide customers with long term reliability information, tens of thousands of hours of testing is required on statistically relevant sample sizes. Today, more than 20K hours of real life testing has been completed to maximize accuracy.
A conventional bulb’s lifetime is characterized by a mortality curve (B). For instance, a B50 figure represents the time at which 50% of bulbs will have failed catastrophically. As the efficiency of power LEDs has grown to be more efficient than many conventional bulbs, their adoption into general lighting applications has been steadily rising.
LEDs experience a gradual reduction in light output during operation. This phenomenon is called light output degradation and may stem either from a reduction in the light-emitting efficiency of the LED chip or a reduction in the light transmission of the optical path within the LED package. As a result, power LED lifetimes are not characterized in terms of catastrophic failure, but rather in terms of the percentage of original light remaining over time; this is called lumen maintenance (L). For instance, the lumen maintenance of Philips Lumileds’ LUXEON product family has traditionally been 70% after 50K hours, at nominal drive currents and recommended junction temperature.
The fundamental difference between the method of characterizing conventional bulbs and power LED lifetimes has proved challenging for lighting designers. Working with various specification agencies, Philips Lumileds has introduced a new way to measure the reliability of LUXEON LEDs which bridges the gap between the general lighting and semiconductor worlds. When combining mortality (B) and lumen maintenance (L) curves, the associated graphs are referred to as power LED lifetime predictions (B) and (L) curves. Using this method, Philips Lumileds has specified the expected lifetimes of the LUXEON Rebel and LUXEON K2 product families as a function of drive current and junction temperature. For example, the lifetime at (B10, L70) is the expected stress time at which 10% of the population is expected to have either failed catastrophically (i.e. opens or shorts) or has degraded by more than 30% from the initial light output.
The availability of (B50, L70) and (B10, L70) curves allows lighting designers to manage their system parameters (i.e. drive current and junction temperature) to target the desired lifetime of their fixtures. It enables the confident design of a solid-state lighting fixture.
Below are two B&L curves. An important conclusion is that higher junction temperatures and higher drive currents both result in a decrease in LED lifetime. The ability for Philips Lumileds LUXEON LEDs to last in excess of 50K hours is a result of their superior die and packaging technology.
For more technical information about reliability of the LUXEON K2 and LUXEON Rebel and how these curves were generated, please refer to reliability datasheets RD06 and RD07 and the LED lifetime analysis white paper WP12.

Thermal Management is an integral part of an LED solution and is highly recommended in any application. Please refer to pages 41 – 42 for a list of standard heatsinks.
For retrofits (proof of concept or prototype), it is possible to use standard heatsinks to allow for maximum dissipation of heat.
New designs offer the flexibility to use the entire fixture as the heatsink, which will allow the LUXEON® LEDs to run cooler. This will increase luminous efficiencies and decrease power consumption.
For more information on selecting the appropriate light engine, please visit our interactive LED light engine selector webtool at www.FutureLightingSolutions.com/lightengines

glossary
A see Ampere.
AMPERE (A) The unit of measurement of current.
AC-DC see Offline AC-DC.
BATWING A Radiation Pattern in which the peak luminous intensity occurs at 40 degrees from the normal.
BEAM ANGLE see Viewing Angle.
BOOST CIRCUIT An electrical drive circuit in which the required Output Voltage is greater than the Input Voltage.
BUCK / BOOST CIRCUIT
An electrical drive circuit in which the required Output Voltage is at times less than and at times greater than the Input Voltage. Such a drive circuit is typically required when the LED is powered using batteries, as the battery voltage is depleted over time.
BUCK CIRCUIT An electrical drive circuit in which the required Output Voltage is less than the Input Voltage.
CANDELA (CD)
A unit of measurement of Luminous Intensity, equal to the amount of light given out through a solid angle, that is to say lumens per steradian. (There are 4 pi steradians in a complete sphere. The number of steradians in a given solid angle can be determined by dividing the surface area of that portion of the sphere by the square of the radius of the sphere.)
CD see Candela.
COLLIMATOR A Secondary Optic, often a Lens, which collimates the light.
COLOR TEMPERATURE
The measurement of color of white light, typically measured in Kelvin (K). The more reddish the light, the lower the color temperature; the more bluish the light, the higher the color temperature.
DOMINANT WAVELENGTH The Wavelength of light, as perceived by the human eye.
DRIVE CURRENT The constant current provided to the LED by the Driver.
DRIVERA circuit that provides current to the LED. Constant current drivers are suitable for LUXEON® LEDs.
ELECTRICAL MODULE
A ready-to-use power solution, ideal for testing and prototyping the LEDs. Little to no electronics knowledge is required.
FORWARD VOLTAGE
The typical voltage drop across the LED, as measured at a junction temperature of 25°C. Depending on the product, the maximum forward voltage is between 15 and 25% greater than the typical forward voltage.
FULL WIDTH HALF MAXIMUM The total beam divergence at 50% of its maximum intensity.
FWHM see Full Width Half Maximum.
HEATSINKA component designed to lower the temperature of the electronic device to which it is connected by dissipating excess heat generated. It is often finned, and made from aluminum.
IC see Integrated Circuit.
INPUT VOLTAGE The voltage applied to the driver circuit.
INTEGRATED CIRCUIT
An electronic circuit built on a semiconductor silicon substrate. The circuit is sealed, and has leads. It is often referred to as a “chip.”
INTENSITY see Luminous Intensity.
IOUT see Output Current.
LAMBERTIAN A Radiation Pattern in which the peak luminous intensity occurs at 20 degrees from the normal.
LDO see Low-Dropout Regulator.
LOW-DROPOUT REGULATOR
An electrical drive circuit in which the required Output Voltage is slightly lower than the Input Voltage.
LENSA Secondary Optic that collimates the light. For white LEDs the beam angle can be 10, 30 or 45 degrees.
LM see Lumen.
LUMEN (LM) The unit of measurement of Luminous Flux.

glossary
LUMEN MAINTENANCE The number of hours after which the light output will be at 70% of the original light output.
LUMINOUS FLUXA measure to the sensitivity of the eye to the rate of flow of light per time at the given color. The unit of measurement is the Lumen.
LUMINOUS INTENSITY
The energy emitted by a light source in a given direction. The unit of measurement is the Candela.
MILLIWATT (MW)One thousandth of a Watt. This is a measurement of power. It can be used to measure Power Consumption but is typically used to measure Radiometric Power.
MW see milliWatt.
OFFLINE AC-DCAn electrical drive circuit that converts from wall current and voltage to a constant DC current, suitable for driving all LUXEON® LEDs.
OPTIC see Secondary Optic.
OUTPUT CURRENT The current supplied to the LED from the output of the driver. It is measured in Amperes.
OUTPUT VOLTAGE The voltage available to the LED from the output of the driver.
POWER CONSUMPTION
A measure of the power consumed by the system. It can be calculated by multiplying the Forward Voltage by the Drive Current. The unit of measurement is the Watt.
PROGRAMMABLE IC An Integrated Circuit that can be used to modulate the Output Current.
RADIANT POWER see Radiometric Power.
RADIATION PATTERN
The polar pattern describing the directional characteristics of light exiting the LED. Radiation patterns include Batwing, Lambertian, and Side Emitting.
RADIOMETRIC POWER A measure of the power of the light exiting the LED. The unit of measurement is the milliWatt.
REFLECTOR A Secondary Optic that reflects the light exiting the side of the LED.
SECONDARY OPTIC
A device connected to the LED for purposes of manipulating the light output. Common secondary optics include a Lens and a Reflector.
SEPIC CIRCUIT(Single Ended Primary Inductor Converter) These are useful for replacing boost circuits when true shutdown is required; Vout = øV.
SIDE EMITTING A Radiation Pattern in which the peak luminous intensity occurs at 85 degrees from the normal.
SOLID-STATE LIGHTING Lighting that uses solid-state devices, that is to say, high power LED, such as the LUXEON.
SSL see Solid-State Lighting.
THERMAL RESISTANCE
The measurement of how difficult it is for heat to traverse an object. It is defined as the temperature difference across an object when a unit of heat energy flows through it in unit time. The lower the thermal resistance, the better the object Heatsink is at dissipating heat. The unit of measurement is degrees Celsius per Watt (°C/W).
V see Volt.
VF see Forward Voltage.
VIN see Input Voltage.
VOUT see Output Voltage.
VIEWING ANGLEThe angle through which the light may be satisfactorily viewed. Note: as the viewing angle decreases, the intensity generally increases.
