Bowland "Bowland College, the oldest and one of the most competitive colleges of Lancaster Uni‐versity, welcomed its new students with some afternoon tea, history from the Principal and Assistant Dean, and some fantastic games of HeadsUp! The 2014 international cultural exchange has been a huge success, with stu‐dents forging friendships and worldwide links while also strengthening their ath‐letic, academic, entrepreneurial, political and creative skills. With trips to Windy Pike Farm and Clitheroe and being a fantas‐tic and supportive team at the College Cup all during the first week, it has been a busy but thoroughly enjoyable three weeks and we've all loved getting to know you dur‐ing your time at Lancaster.”  Bowland til I die!   Alice, Daniel, Emily and Perseus  (Bowland Buddies)

“There is only ONE County college!”

“Students of County were welcomed in style into the college with afternoon tea and cream cakes galore. The county college prin‐ciple introduced the college and led a tour of the college area. The students were wel‐comed to the college and told that they were allowed in the college spaces anytime whilst at Lancaster. The County college went on a series of adventures during the programme especially on farm, industry and community day. The team pulled together in true col‐lege fashion to become the winners of col‐lege cup day, demonstrating their ability in sports and academia. County college brought together students from five different coun‐tries to show that although we may be from different backgrounds, when we work together as a college, we can achieve things we never thought possible alone.”

Cartmel “From day one Cartmel has always been the best! When students were allocated to their college, this was one of the first times that the coun‐tries mixed with each other and started to form international friendships. Cartmel bonded over a name game where we successfully learnt each other’s names and continued to play games in the south west of campus. One of the highlights for me was farm day, one of the first activities as a college. Students got to spend time together while exploring the countryside, here new friendships were formed and blossomed. In the short time that the students have been a part of Cartmel we have had numerous achievements. We came 3rd place in the college cup day after tak‐ing part in a quiz, football and netball. We also won the Fylde sports event in Fylde bar, mainly thank you to Sunny for scoring an ex‐tremely high score in the ball and bucket game! The prize from this event a chocolate hamper was shared between the groups on business day. This day Cartmel worked well as a team and came up with a great business idea and successfully pitched it to the judges. Cartmel students have always worked well as a team and everyone has contributed in their own special way to make Cartmel the best college on campus! You should all be proud of yourselves and I am glad to have been the team leader of such a wonderful and en‐thusiastic group of students. Faye, Bimpe and Hassan have also enjoyed getting to know you and leading you on different activities during the course of the programme. Keep in touch!!”

Fylde

“Although Fylde College is traditionally known for its sporting prowess, during this year’s cultural exchange its members have shown enthusiasm and passion for all of the activities and opportunities which the programme has provide for them. We had a beau‐tiful day for the farm day, where Fylde visited Keason Head, an upland hill farm where we learned about husbandry and the farming processes which were carried out there. There was a tiring climb to the top of the moor, avoiding the adders on the way, but we were rewarded with a beautiful view of the hills of the Lake District in the dis‐tance. Fylde fared well in the college cup day, winning a few games of football and netball mainly due to a few of our star players such as Yulin and Caleo, putting us mid table when we came to the quiz, where we did well but still coming 4th mainly due to possible cheating from the other teams! On Business day the college put forward an idea of reducing the carbon emissions from vehicles which was powerfully sold to the rest of the colleges by Remy our very own comedian. The college was well represented at the showcase in a day with Khaled reciting his very own beautiful poetry in Arabic and Remy showing the rest of us how to dance properly and finally headlining the show our in house rapper McFreeze who performed an exhilarating rendition of “99 problems”. We have all enjoyed all the activities in the past few weeks and it is clear that Fylde has been very lucky to have had such talented members this year during the pro‐gramme!” Will Field (Fylde buddy)

“Pendle College is named after Pendle Hill in Lancashire, where the famous Pendle witches originated from. They were sent to Lancaster Castle for trial over 400 years ago, before be‐ing found guilty and sentenced to a tragic death. On the first day Pendle college gathered in the games room in Pendle bar where the elected college members put on table tennis, pool, table football as well as a tour of the accommodation. On the first full day we visited the Lower Gazegill farm at the college origins in Pendle. The farm focused on organic products as well as flower meadows, bat conservation, education for the community, protection of an ancient roman road and general upbringing of cattle in an ethical manor. Key tasks involved learning about modern British farming, UK food challenges of the present & future, the life cycle of cattle on an organic farm and of course, cattle selfies! College Cup Day was an‐other key event learning the famous Pendle chant, imprinting the green college colours on each other’s faces and despite not coming at top, Pendle thrashed most colleges at sports. Claiming victory on five out of six games and beating all teams in Netball! As a college, Pendle worked together to come up with a busi‐ness idea to have a restaurant that only em‐ploys disabled people and bring greater invest‐ment to the community for groups that really need it.” ‐ Jonathon (Pendle Team Leader)   “P‐E‐N‐D‐L‐E, Pendle is the place to be with a nick nack paddy whack give a dog a bone, Pendle is you favourite home”

“Furness, you’ve been amazing! From the very first day when everyone was together as a college, we got to know each other and had some laughs with the games we played. Our first trip as a college to the farm was a new experience for many stu‐dents who had only ever seen farm animals in a zoo. The sheep that got stuck added some drama to the trip! We’d all agree the homemade cakes and biscuits were defi‐nitely a highlight as well. Some people had a selfie with Miranda the cow – there were some beautiful photos, and the students didn’t look bad either!  On College Cup day, we won half of our netball and football matches. Well done Furness! Despite coming last and second‐to‐last in the quiz, we still managed to beat three other colleges and finished 5th. It was a brilliant day with all Furnessians playing their part in the sport and the quiz. The Fylde fun night was another great night for Furness! 3rd place and we got some chocolate!  But we’re not just clever and sporty…Furness has talent! The talent showcase was an incredible night and a chance to show off some of the amazing singers and danc‐ers we have in the college. Enterprise day also saw Furness College work as a team to develop their youth social enterprise ‐ good work!  Anyway, we wanted to say you guys have been a fantastic group of people to spend time with. Thank you from your Furness buddies for a memorable three weeks!  Just one last thing to say… MIGHTY FURNESS!” ‐ Rob (Furness Team Leader)

Students were given two opportunities to volunteer in the local community. One week they were able to volunteer with youth development projects, holding international craft sessions in libraries, nurseries and care homes, on the other they were able to make an impact on the local environment through green volunteering projects or work on projects to improve awareness and fundraising for various charitable organisations. All the students had a great time helping out and were able to make a real difference to a number of important causes.

On 29th July, ICE2014 got the chance to learn about how British industry works and to inter-act with some of the most successful businesses in the region. Lancashire has an exciting va-riety of enterprises, big and small, in diverse fields, from arts and culture, to food and drink, to production and manufacturing. Our students got the opportunity to see 8 diverse businesses from the North West in action and to meet the people who help run them.

Page 12: LUSU International Cultural Exchange 2014

Students took inspiration from the many student lead events we hold at Lancaster and held their own talent show! Everyone participated in some way to make the event a huge success by performing, decorating the venue, running the behind the scenes tech or reporting on the event via film or social media. It was an amazing night and all participants had a fantastic time, everything ran very smoothly thanks to the hard work of the events coordinators and the talent on offer was second to none! The event was themed around the idea of students from all cultures coming together and that’s exactly what everyone did and they had a fantastic time doing so!

The event our society held was "Locating the Horcruxes". The concept is a little like treas-ure hunt, but we designed it to be in the Harry Potter world. We labelled certain areas on campus as places in the Harry Potter world, and the participants were divided into two groups -- the Heroes (led by Harry Potter) and the Villains (led by Lord Voldemort). My favourite part of the event was when the Heroes and Villains met at 'Hogwarts' and had an epic battle. We, as regulators, had a lot of fun laughing and watching people 'die'. It was especially hilarious when the two groups dis-appeared in the woods and all we could hear was a random "Avada Kedavra" or an "Expelliarmus". This epic battle between both groups happened right at the end before we ended the game, which was quite ironic as it was also the Battle of Hogwarts that ended the Second Wizarding War. JunHsin Lim (President), Jenny Rebecca (Social Secretary), Darren Ooi Zhi Yao The Glee Society held a tribute

night where performers could take the stage to sing a song by their favourite artist. Everyone had a fantastic time and the night was a huge success! “Tonight The GLEE society tribute night was a big SUCCESS! Thank you everyone for the support and big applause for everyone who brave enough to perform!” - Bella Lorenza “Thanks Glee Society so much for giving me a chance to sing! Love you guys and thanks for all your support! I really enjoyed myself tonight and you guys are all amazing!” - Emily Huang

Karuna Tan Yi Wen (President), Jayanty Lim (Communications Officer), Chew Xin Er (Social Secretary)

The Baking Society held a Bake-Off! Style competition to test the students skills at cake making and decoration. All teams cooked up some amazing creations and awards were given for everything from best teamwork to most fun! Jonathan Yeoh Guan Aik (President), Chloe Wong (Communications Officer), Alicia Ng (Social Secretary)

Art and Photography Society was a really popular choice for students to sign up for on the first day of the Cultural Exchange! We had some really enthusiastic candidates for President, Communications Offi-cer and Social Secretary, and organised an art and photography master class. Jay’s photography class was fantastic and he taught students how to take the best photographs with their cameras and equipment. I took the students down to the campus lake and we painted some wonderful landscapes and sunsets; I was really impressed with all the different styles! We had a great time sharing our skills with the society and seeing how talented you all are. Thanks for being part of our society! Alice and Jay xx

The Chess Society held an event to teach new players basic rules and give experienced play-ers the chance to show off their skills and take each other on head to head. The event received a great reception and everyone really enjoyed themselves!

President Sohaib Zahran is pictured here showing new players

the ropes!

Basketball Society held a 3 on 3 tournament where

new and experienced players could show off their

skills! It was a great opportunity for students to get

active and do some exercise and everyone who

went down had a fantastic time!

Hansel and Gretel A group of students ven-tured deep into the dark forest to find the Duke’s performance of Hansel & Gretel, lost in an enchanted world of magic and folk-lore. This stunning per-formance saw the audience follow the cast around vari-ous different locations in Williamson Park as the ac-tion unfolded in the beauti-ful natural surroundings.

One of our very own students, Kuan Ling, made a guest appear-ance in the per-formance as he was invited up to play along with the cast.

As the play unfolded, the sun set, and, as darkness de-scended, the final scene was set on the spooky candle-lit pond. After the play, our students met some of the cast and posed for the all-important group photo! The perfect end to the per-fect night!

FOOTBALL NIGHT OUT

This group of football fans got the full football experi-ence at Morecambe FC when they went to see the Morecambe Vs Oldham.

Not only was it an exciting game, with two goals apiece, but ICE2014 got special treatment as management rolled out the red carpet, offering pitch-side seats and access to the private box! Students were luckily enough to sample some of Morecambe’s award-winning pies during half time and to meet some of the players after the match too.

Together we are better.
