THE CARLTON TEAM OF 1890.

SOMETHING ABOUT THE PLAYERS.

(Bv "A Has-Been")

As so much space has been given to the Tasmanians who opposed theCarlton Team on the Sydney Cricket Ground in I 890' I am going to saysomething about some of the latter's players.

The following were the members of the party:-W. Strickland (capt.)'D. Hutchison (vi-e-capt.), J. Melviile (manager), J. Kelly, Capt. Manning,J. 'Moor"ho.,se, J. Blake, A. McKenzie' P. Williams, W. CrgPe, J' Ross' R'-Strorg,

R. Salt, C. Letcher, G. Currie, W' Wblton, W.- Watling, D. Murrav'C. Crulson, A. Mackie, R. Laurie, W' McKechnie, G. White.

The captain of the Carlton team of 1890 is our old friend Billy Strick-land, who hls been living in Sydney for some years. Those who saw himplay could not possibly fJrget his hard and dashing runs from the -backline''Bittv *""1d have gone-thtorigh. brick wall to get the ball. Feart He didn'tknow the meaning of the wordl

I had seen Billy play at llobart with the Carlton Team a few seasong

befor., and was -."h' i-pr""sed with his virility, He is a keen student ofthe game, and a particularly 6ne type of man.

But where is that one-time enthusiasm which was wont to ooze from.r.ry por" of his skin) Billy's not old-never will bel What, then, hasi".";; of hi* on Saturday .ft"t.oot"? Perhaps he has to work at thattime, Iike your humble servant.

one can hardly think that he could be in ary place where Aussie Rules.r" play"d without

I, unfortunately, rarely see him nou'adays' lt is always a delight to me

to havg a "h"t -ith him. - of corrse, our conversation is mainly on one

INTERSTATE NEWS.. Last Saturday saw Collingwood regain the lead in.the Victorian League com-

petition; alter an uninteresting display, they ran out easy winners over Richmondat Richmond, where the attendance was over 35,000. The finat bell saw thescores, Collingwood 12-12 to 9-7. Fitzroy, who have becn improvir.rg rvith cachmatch, gave Melbourne a defeat which dropped Melbourne to fifth-position onthe premiership list. The final scores were, Fitzroy 13-11 to Melbouine's ll-11_Carlton defeated Essendon by 10-11 to 8-15; Geelong, at Geelong, defeared NorthMelbourne 17-21 to 3-11; South Melbourr.re defeated St: Kikla 13-20 to 8-9;Footscray beat Hawthorn 1l-19 to 8-19; Coburg, in the association, still continuein the winning vein, and last Saturdal' defeated Geelong 19-16 to 7-8.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA.-The results of the matches were as follorvs:-West Adelaide beat Sturt, 12-15 to 7-8; Norwood beat West Torrens, 12-9 to 7-19; North Adelaide beat Port Adelaide, 12-7 to 6-15; Glenclg beat South Adelaide,9-19 to 7-t3.

WEST AUSTRALIA.-East Fremantle beat Claremont, 10-12 to 8-8;Subiaco beat West Perth, 11-13 to 9-7; Perth beat South Fremantle by 7-0 to 5-6.F. Gilby, who will be making the trip rvith the Carlton Club, is playing at histop, and those who saw him in action against Essendon last Saturday say that heis one of the best back men wearing the dark blue. His marking was sure andcertain, and his dash and anticipations perfect in their execution. Geelong haveunearthed a fine pla1'er in young McDiarmid, the ex-West Austra.lian rvho hasbeen playing with the Geelong second eighteen. Playing his first game with theseniors last week he greatly impressed the critics, and {rom the bounce of theball, he showed his ability. He is a niccly built ladi with fine pace, and is a clevermark for his inches, and whether roving or on the forward line he never wastesa kick. Mc. will certainly be a favourite rvith the Sydney public.

fouth Australia's Premiership List.-West Adelaide 22, Port, W'est Torrensand Norths 18, Sturt 16, Norwood 10, Glenelg 8. and South Adelaide 2. LastSaturday, J. Owens, who plays for Glenelg, passed the AdelaiCe goal-kickingrecord of 64 goals. Orvens is South Australia's goal sneak at the Carnivals. The leading goal-kicktrs in the Ballarat League are: Duft (Ballarat),63; Lear-month (Maryborough), 58; Witiorvhite (Imperial), 37. J. Quinn has been theumpire selected to accompany the South ^{ustralian Carrtival tcam to Melbourne. He is a little man, and, in fact, one of the smallest umpires in Australia, anC hisdemeanour on the oval w-ill protrahly cause mally a hearty laugh during the matchesin which hc olficiates. Q'rirn is the idoi of the Adelaide crorvds by his antics, andhe should certainll'kcep the puhlic in good humour in }felbourne. The averl,"cw'eight and hcigh' ,,f the \\'e:t .'\-urtralian Carnival team is: Weight, ll stone 9

lbs., and the height. .i fret 9] inches. Jim l{cHale, Collingwood's coach, whenquestioned about thc prosDccts of the prenriership honours. said that if Melbourneget into the final four, they will be the hardest team to beat on the MelbourneCricket Ground, and I greatty fear their pace and the lightning attacks. In SouthAustralia, a young plalrer u'ho rvill he plaf ing senior foothalt next year. is GeorgeMargitich, a Christian Brothers' Coltege boy. Although only eighte"n vears ofage he stands six feet, and weighs 1l stone 4 lbs., and this season hc has onlyplayed in eight matches, and kicked 107 goals. In his tast match he had 20 shots-he kick"d 17 goals, hit the post twice, and scored a behind. Already senior clubshave sr:unded him for next season, but it looks like him playing for SouthAdetaide, in which district he lives. Jn kicking for goal he always uses the. drop-kick. ln 1925, his first season, he kicked 68 goals, in 1926 he bagged 108, and

with a couple of games to go, he tooks like breaking a record.

George White was anything but big, yet he was uncanny in his abilityto mark above his taller opponents. He gave a magnificent exhibition offooqball when playing for Victoria on the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 1889.And, prior to that at Hobart, playing for Carlton on the Risdon Ground, healso gave a superb display. White ,was a great footballer, judged on the threegames in which I saw him perform, He was doing something serviceableall the time.

McKechnie was short and sturdily built. He was an adept at ecoopingthe ball from the ruck and passing a "little p33k"-1ls greatest asset of afollower in those days' He lvas always doing something serviceable to theeide. Not notable in anything ,brilliant-neither in running, kicking, normarking-fi. "fed" the "d."h."," and enabled them to 6nish the job whichhe had so well started.

Playing for Carlton against Southern Tasmania a few-se-a-sons p-reviouslyMcKechnie,- rvith cor,ra.le Mickey Whelan, playf$ remarkably well.

Wre had met Wally Watlin'l the season b.f'or" (1889) in the matchagainst Victoria on the Melbour::e Cricket Cround. He was ceitainly -a

"flendid playcr: quick in his movements, clever in han:lling, and a good kick.

If memorl' serves, I lancy that Watling played in South Australia beforegoing to Mel'oo.rrne.

Charlie Coulson rvas a relirble bacl:. He had a brother in the Carltonteam which playecl at Il6l2v1-.Allg;1. The latter had the reputation ofbeing able to "kick Lrp a spout." And he was a clinlring kick, too; but hehad to be fed a good deal. Charlie was a much better footballer, though hecouldn't propel a ball as far or as qccurately as Albert.

Danny Hutchison was probably the best known man to Nerz So:'tl:Welshmen, as he came to reside in Sydney afterwards, and playcd:n:heclub gamea here.

For years he kept an ironmongery shop in Oxford Street. Danny wasa nippy player. He war chockful of energy, and, as he had a bit of "foot,"and was skilful in handling the ball, he always caught the spectator's eye.

Amongat the names enumerated in the party are some famous players, but perhaps I have dwelt long enough on the good old footballere of theCarlton of 1890.
