Lusail Sunset Tower Doha, Qatar This mixed-use tower will be in the new community of Lusail, a city development that covers some 35 square kilometers north of Doha and is planned for a projected 200,000 persons. Along with a variety of residential options, the new city will provide commercial, hospitality, mixed use, hotel and entertainment districts that will be inte- grated with parks, marinas and other open spaces. The tower's distinctive torqued appear- ance is achieved through a series of gently curved vertical fins that are shading devices or "brise soleil" at the upper half of the building. These fins serve the dual purpose of shading the most exposed portions of the tower while giving the building a simple means of shaping its exterior volume. The metal clad fins start at the base of the building as wide, flat spandrels which then transform into thin, curved blades at the top of the tower. The building's wide mullions not only emphasize the strong vertical form of the tower but also reduce the total amount of exposed window area at the perimeter, considerably cutting solar heat gain in the oppressive desert environment. At the top, transformed into thin fins, the narrow spandrels allow for large window areas for the upper floors with unobstructed views to the coast line and city beyond. Along with 23,600 sq. meters of Class A office space, the building includes a retail floor at its podium base, an in house gym- nasium, business center, along with parking for over 500 cars.
