Dear Parents and Carers What an amazing year 2012 has been for Lurnea P.S! It has been an absolute privilege to lead such a great school towards continuous whole school improvement. This is something in which we take very seriously and strive to ensure that our students participate in quality teaching and learning programs which prepare all students for a 21st century world. This edition of the newsletter is jam packed with a special compilation of items from each and every class. Each class has developed a creative piece using the title ‘Lurnea- What a Year’ as inspiration. We know the students are very excited to share their year with you. For any families who still wish to purchase 50th Anniversary commemorative items, we still have pens and mugs available for sale at the office. Pens are $2 and mugs are $5. The final order of commemorative pavers has been sent off and we anticipate them arriving in the summer holidays. During the break, we will add the second release orders to the existing garden. We will post photos on our Facebook page when it is complete. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our students for always striving their best to be safe, respectful learners. We have had the pleasure of seeing many students reach Gold Level in our school, levelled behaviour system and are really proud of each and every student. We know that many students are looking forward to Mr Sim’s Gold Morning Tea ceremony next Tuesday. We hear there may be some special guests! Watch this space… Our staff does an amazing job, each and every day to ensure that your children have the most innovative and engaging learning experiences possible. As part of our role, we have had the opportunity to observe each and every class throughout the year on several occasions. It has been great to watch each teacher grow professionally and implement all their new knowledge from Teacher Professional Learning days. And finally, we would like to thank you, our community for your ongoing and tireless support of our school. It certainly makes our jobs as educators much easier when there is a common goal to improving student outcomes. From the both of us, we wish all of our students, families and staff a restful holiday season. May the new year bring each and everyone one of you much health and happiness. We are both looking forward to spending some quality time with our respective families. See you all in 2013! Mrs Dunlop and Mrs Stipanovic

Our year at Preschool is almost over. We have had a very busy year and it is unbelievable that we have experienced so much in one year. We would like to share our favourite memories of Preschool with you. • Our first day. Most of us were excited. We have provided you with an overview of some of the activities that we have experienced this year at Preschool. We can truly say that this has been a year that we have felt a sense of belonging in the Preschool. We have been given the opportunity to learn through play. This is what being a four year old is about. Our Preschool experience contributed to our journey of becoming where our sense of identity is being formed.

3/4P 3/4P students have worked really hard this year, focusing on our reading, comprehension and Mathematical problem solving skills. During Term 1, we learnt lots of scientific facts about the Solar Syste m. Did you knowthat Pluto is no longer a planet? 2012 was the year of the London Olympic Games. We followed our wonderful Australian Olympians and they did us proud. Part of our learning meant going on excursions, this gave us a hands on learning experience, which we thoroughly enjoyed. Other exciting events have been when Lurnea High School students came to teach us about different art, skills and techniques. We have been developing our skills in problem solving and were able to demonstrate these skills in a whole primary problem solving day. 3/4P are wonderful and caring students who always welcomed new students to their class. There are so many events and learning that took place in 3/4P this year and we are sad that the year has come to en end.

Yeah we’re kids at L.P.S playing games on the DS.

When we play math training my smartness makes everyone quit the game.

I’m a math training pro, fans everywhere we go.

We never have to pay because we always have to play.

Instead of going to the pool, we go to Lurnea Public School.

They have great air-con’s to keep us cool. By: Abdullah, Hassan, Haydon, Tyler, Ali & 4/5R.

Variety Club Christmas Party

On Tuesday the children of the Support Unit attended another wonderful day at the annual Christmas Party. The children enjoyed rides, fairy-floss, lolly bags, entertainment, face painting and hat making, ice-cream and of course some lunch. Visiting the party were thousands and thousands of children and their carers, mounted police officers and their horses, some beautiful dogs, and a reptile display, ambulance officers and their vehicles. The children from Lurnea were busy all day and when leaving they were all given a beautiful gift from Santa. A big thankyou goes to the Variety Club and all their volunteers!

Peer Support This term, Year 6 had the opportunity to take part in Lurnea Public School’s Peer Support Program. The program’s peer led approach was designed to enhance the mental, social and emotional wellbeing of students. Peer Support was integrated into K-6 PBIS lessons each Thursday. During this time, Year 6 visited K-4 classrooms and were empowered to positively support others to complete tasks that had a focus on relationships, optimism, resilience, anti-bullying and values. Developing these skills may strengthen our students’ ability to meet life's challenges and pressures with confidence and perseverance. These skills are an important part of educating children at Lurnea Public School.

This term, Year 6 have enjoyed leading PBIS lessons in classrooms. Their support of others has helped enhance Lurnea Public School’s positive school culture. Well done Year 6!

Library News The Library continues to be a busy place. This year we held two successful book fairs and we appreciate your support with these. The children were able to choose a variety of books for themselves and as a result we have been able to obtain an excellent selection of books for the children to borrow and allow for books to be given as prizes for Book Week competitions. The Scholastic Book Clubs have again been a popular way to get our children reading. This year 364 children will receive their Premier's Reading Challenge certificates, many attaining their Gold Awards. These will be distributed soon. Congratulations to all those children. We're close to getting a 100% effort. Maybe next year? Good luck everyone. The 'Perform' theatrical group will be here again next year for Book Week. Our children always enjoy their unique approach to the Book Week short-listed books. We look forward to another happy book parade in 2013. The children always look forward to an excuse to 'dress up' and the variety of costumes is always exciting. I would like to thank the 2012 Library Monitors for their hard work at lunchtimes, especially those who developed the Craft activity groups, and their quick response to helping whenever the need occurs. They are already helping to train the 2013 Library Monitors. Well done Monitors. We will miss you but we wish you much success in High School. I would also like to thank Mrs Alison Russell for all her volunteer work in the library again this year. Finally ,once again, thank you all for your support. It's now time for all books to be returned to the library in preparation for a busy 2013. Season's greetings to you all, Mrs C. Kiss (Teacher-Librarian)

National School Chaplaincy and Student Welfare Program

Our school for the past three years has enjoyed the services of Joshua Grey as our Student Welfare Worker. Joshua and more recently Alisha Spicer have been employed as a part of the National School Chaplaincy and Student Welfare Program, which is funded by the Federal Government. They have been providing social and student wellbeing services to our students in the classroom and the playground. They have done an excellent job of helping students to learn values and social skills, and have been great role models to our students. Student Welfare Workers, such as Joshua and Alisha have to abide by a strict code of conduct and job description. This code of conduct ensures that these workers treat all students equally and that they do not teach religious beliefs. As mentioned previously, their main tasks include supporting students to learn values, social skills and help to improve the confidence and overall wellbeing of the students at Lurnea Public School. I believe they have done an excellent job of this. Joshua will return in the same role next year working 2 days a week. This is an increase in time and is great news for our school for 2013. For any other questions, comments or feedback on the program please feel free to come and see me. Jason Clarke Assistant Principal Student Success
