Lunsford Primary
School
A journey of success and excellence
Mission Statement:
At Lunsford we aim to create a
nurturing, creative and
inspiring environment which
enables us to have valued,
happy and independent
learners. Our children are
ready to grasp life’s
opportunities with confidence
and success.
Welcome to our school.
At Lunsford primary we are justly
proud of the high academic standards
that our pupils achieve.
The staff and governors work hard to
provide a stimulating environment
and the quality of teaching that will
ensure good learning.
This prospectus will tell you lots about
the school but you can also visit our
school website to learn even more.

Starting School
Our reception or foundation stage
class is called Panda Class. Having
been offered a place at Lunsford
through the Kent Admissions
procedure, parents will be invited
to the school to find out more
about how they can be involved
when their children start school.
They will be able to hear from their
class teacher and support staff all
about how the day will be
organised. During the Foundation
Year the school follows the EYFS
Statutory Framework which
assesses the progress and
development of the youngest
pupils. We also use the Early
Excellence Baseline Assessment.
Parents are kept informed of their
child’s progress through regular
meetings with the key worker and
Tapestry which is an online tool
which all Panda parents have
access to.
Working with Parents
At Lunsford Primary School we
want to form strong partnerships
with parents and carers. We have
two formal parent consultation
evenings a year but parents are
always welcome to make
appointments to speak with their
child’s teacher if they have a
concern or query. There are many
events that take place during the
year such as class assemblies and
concerts and we hope that parents
will attend these. Parents are also
invited to come into school as
voluntary helpers or to accompany
children on the many school trips
that the school arranges. (Please
note a security check has to be
made on voluntary helpers.)

Organisation
Lunsford Primary is a ‘through-
primary’ which means that children
can be here from the age of 4
through to the age of 11.
There are 7 classes in the school –
one foundation stage (4 to 5 year
olds), two key stage 1 (5 to 7 year
olds) and four key stage 2 (7 to 11
year olds).
Each class has the equivalent of a
full time teacher but some classes
have two teachers doing part of the
week each. The teachers work
closely together on planning and
assessment and both teachers
attend the consultation evenings.
The school has a team of
experienced teaching assistants
who support the learning
throughout the school.
School Houses
The children will join a well-
established house system which
they support through good
behaviour, hard work and co-
operative team spirit. Siblings are
put in the same house to avoid a
conflict of loyalty!

Uniform
At Lunsford the uniform is very
important. It instils a sense of
belonging and fosters the correct
attitude to school life. The Lunsford
uniform is quite distinctive and
children wear it with pride.

Healthy Eating
The school has been awarded the
Healthy Schools Award and is
maintaining that initiative through
the Kent Healthy Schools
Enhancement Model. An outside
caterer provides the school meals
and the menus support the core
theme of healthy eating within the
Healthy Schools programme.
Dishes are freshly prepared each
day and recipes are developed to
be balanced and nutritional. The
Children and Families Act 2014
places a legal duty on all
state-funded schools in England,
including academies and free
schools to offer a free school lunch
to all pupils in reception, year 1
and year 2.
Junior parents are asked to pay on the Monday of the week if their
child is having school lunches. Parents can pay by cash or cheque which can be brought to school in an envelope marked with the child’s name, class and dates required and amount enclosed. It is possible for children to have
free school meals if the family is in
receipt of certain allowances.
The school also provides the
facilities for children to eat a
packed lunch. There are certain
restrictions on the content of the
packed lunch in line with the school
Healthy Eating policy.
Pupils are asked to bring in a water
bottle (plain water no flavoured
juice) to drink throughout the day.

Behaviour
The school has high standards of
conduct. We expect children to
behave in a polite and sensible
manner and to show respect to
every member of the school
community.
We have 7 Golden Values which
were decided by the children. They
are:
We are kind to everyone
We look after our environment both inside and outside
We help each other out
We do our best in everything we do
We are polite and show good manners
We are determined in our learning
We take responsibility for our behaviour and learning.
Good behaviour is rewarded by
house points and children have a
weekly treat called ‘golden time’
when children can choose a
favourite activity such as computer
games or outdoor games. There is a
weekly celebration of hard work
and good behaviour at the merit
assembly on Friday afternoons.
If children misbehave, the
sanctions are missing some golden
time, missing play times and,
rarely, detention. Parents are
always informed if a child is causing
undue concern and the school
expects parents to support it in
enforcing the school rules. Parents
are asked to sign a home school
agreement when their child starts
school and again from time to time
during the child’s time at school.
Attendance
Schools are required to account for
each half day of every child’s
absence from school. Parents are,
therefore requested to telephone
the school for any absence and
send a brief note when their child
returns. Please notify the school in
advance if your child has a medical
or dental appointment and is likely
to return to school part way
through the day. If at all possible
please arrange medical
appointments outside of school
hours.
Lunsford Primary School Swallow Road Larkfield Aylesford Kent ME20 6PY
Children should not be sent back to
school for 24 hours after a
sickness/tummy bug.
Applications for holiday absence
during term time will not be
authorised unless there are
exceptional circumstances. Parents
making such a request are required
to complete a request form and an
appointment with the Headteacher
to discuss the request will be
made.
Medication in School
We can only give medicine that has been prescribed by a doctor. Medicines
must be in the original container with the child’s name on the label. Parents
must call in at the office to complete a form giving
permission for the school to administer the medicine. Parents
of pupils with a need for longer term medicine, including
asthma inhalers, should see the school office to ensure that
the correct accessibility and dosage is in place.
Medical facilities are limited in school but there are several qualified first-
aiders. Parents will be contacted if a child becomes unwell at school.
Arrangements for Disabled Pupils
Parents of disabled pupils are
asked to give the Headteacher
details as soon as they are offered
a place at the school. The
Headteacher will arrange a meeting
at a mutually convenient time to
discuss ways in which the child will
be able to take a full part in the life
of the school and how any
difficulties can be overcome.
The Headteacher will make any
necessary arrangements to enable
the child to participate fully in all
lessons and activities. These may
include briefing staff, obtaining
special equipment and employing
support staff. These may take time
to put into place and may require
further advice and assistance from
the Area Office or specialist
agencies so parents are urged to
see the Headteacher as soon as
possible so that everything can be
ready for the child’s first day at
school.
Lunsford Primary School Swallow Road Larkfield Aylesford Kent ME20 6PY
Special Educational Needs
Every child is special to us and we
strive to ensure that every child has
access to a broad and balanced
curriculum in an environment
which gives the child confidence
and raises self-esteem.
However, sometimes a child is
identified as having Additional
Educational Needs requiring extra
support. This support is provided in
a positive and caring way.
Sometimes an Individual Education
Plan will be provided, setting
targets and monitoring progress.
This will be after consultation with
the pupil, parents, teachers and
Learning Support Assistants. When
necessary, further assistance can
be sought from a number of
external agencies, including
Individual Pupil Services. The
school aims to provide a
framework within which all
involved parties liaise closely,
enabling the child to progress and
reach his or her maximum
potential.
Complaint
The school aims to do the best it can for all the children it its care. We
welcome parents in school and the staff will help you with any points you
want to clarify or enquiries you may have. Your child’s teacher will be
pleased to talk to you if you want to discuss something that bothers you or
your child but this is best done by arrangement so that the teacher can give
you their full attention without being distracted by children arriving or
leaving. The class teacher may refer the matter to the Headteacher and,
again, it is recommended that you make an appointment so that due time
can be given to the concern. A copy of the complaints policy is available in
the school office or on the website. www.lunsford.kent.sch.uk

The school curriculum at Lunsford Primary is based on the National
Curriculum. There are three core subjects English, Maths and Science and
eight other foundation subjects: History, Geography, Art, Design Technology,
ICT, Music, P.E and R.E.
As far as possible, the school teaches through topics and makes cross –
curricular links between the subjects so a History subject such as the
Explorers will include some Geography, Science and Art. This allows children
to make links and makes the learning more meaningful. The long term plans
ensure that children get a broad and balanced curriculum.
English cont.
Writing
Children are taught to write
fluently and expressively. They
are given the opportunities to
write in a range of styles and
for different purposes and
readers. Skills for writing are
taught from the foundation
stage onward and cursive
script is used from the
beginning. Teachers use topic
work to stimulate writing and
make it purposeful.
English
Speaking and Listening
We want to help children to speak
fluently and listen attentively.
Children are encouraged to speak
in partner and class work and to
wider audiences in assemblies.
Reading
We aim to teach children to read
fluently and with understanding so
that can be independent learners
and gain pleasure from the printed
word. We use phonics as a key
component of early reading. The
school has just renewed its
reading scheme and has many
attractive books that appeal to
children. Children are taught in
guided reading sessions
throughout the school.
Lunsford Primary School Swallow Road Larkfield Aylesford Kent ME20 6PY
Maths
Children follow the national numeracy
strategy and are taught using a variety of
resources and methods. All children cover
the content of Number, Algebra, Shape and
Space, and Data Handling.
The emphasis is on teaching children
strategies for mental arithmetic and
problem solving and practice is given at
every level. The younger children do a lot of
practical work and more formal recording is
introduced gradually during year 1.
The school hopes that parents will help
their child to practice number bonds and
multiplication tables and will encourage
children to use maths in everyday situations
such as shopping and sports. Board games
and card games are an excellent way to
reinforce work done at school.
Children receive a maths lesson every day
and maths is often part of the topic work
that they are studying.
Science
The science curriculum is carefully planned
to ensure that every child has experience
of work in physical properties, materials,
and life processes. In addition, children are
asked to plan and conduct a fair test and
make deductions. Children are taught to
consider the best way to record their
findings and are encouraged to present
their work clearly and methodically.
In the lower school, science work is
organised within topics such as autumn or
houses. As children progress up the school,
science becomes more subject-based.
The school is fortunate enough to have a
pond area which can be used for work,
observations and surveys.
Lunsford Primary School Swallow Road Larkfield Aylesford Kent ME20 6PY
History and Geography
History and Geography are planned to
give children skills and information in an
interesting and relevant way.
In the early years this would be through
topic work such as Houses and Home.
Older pupils study a specific period of
history such as the Romans or a specific
geographical feature like Rivers or
Mountains. In both subjects teachers use
cross-curricular links to reinforce the
learning.
History and Geography lend themselves
to local studies and the school has
resources to help children tackle studies
of the environment. Many of our school
outings have an historic or geographic
focus.
Physical Education (P.E.)
The children are taught progressive
skills in games and gymnastics. The
hall is well equipped with apparatus
and the school has a wide variety of
resources for indoor and outdoor
activities. The emphasis is on
learning skills and sportsmanship
but the school also teaches creative
P.E. and offers children dance and
dance - drama lessons.
In the Infant years, children are
helped to develop co-ordination,
balance and dexterity. As the
children grow, they take on more
advanced skills and begin to learn
game rules and techniques. By the
junior years, the children are taking
part in football, netball, rounders
and cricket. Year 3 & 6 children have
regular swimming lessons in the
local school pool. From time to time
matches are arranged against other
schools and, in the summer term, a
sports day is held when every child
can take part. Once a week each
class is taken by our specialist PE
Teacher who will be with us for the
next two years as part of the
Government funding for PE and the
Olympic Legacy.
Lunsford Primary School Swallow Road Larkfield Aylesford Kent ME20 6PY
Assessment
In the Reception class, children
have a key worker who observes
the child’s development and
progress.
In Key Stage 1 and 2 children are
assessed during the year with
formal tests and teacher
assessments. All children’s
progress is carefully monitored
throughout the year.
At the end of the key stages 1
and 2 (aged 7 and aged 11),
children take the government
SATs and the cohort results of
these are published nationally.
In year 1 the children have a
Phonics Screening Check to
make sure that they are making
the appropriate progress with
their sounds for reading.
Parents are invited to school in
the autumn and spring for
parent-teacher consultations
and receive a written report in
the summer.
Religious Education
The R.E. Curriculum is based upon the Kent
Agreed Syllabus and the QCA schemes of work.
Children will learn about the doctrines of the
main world religions and will consider aspects of
modern life from a moral and spiritual point of
view.
Worship in the school takes the form of whole
school and class assemblies and are of a broadly
Christian nature. Every day the children are given
the opportunity to contemplate aspects of the
world in which they live. The school has links with
local church groups and it comes regularly to
share or lead assemblies.
Parents are entitled to withdraw their child from
attending both the Acts of Worship and the
religious Education lessons. Such requests should
be made in writing to the Headteacher or the
Chairman of the Governors.
Lunsford Primary School Swallow Road Larkfield Aylesford Kent ME20 6PY
Music and Art
Music making and singing are an
important part of life at Lunsford.
Children take part in regular music
lessons where they learn rhythm,
melody and music appreciation. The
school has a range of percussion
instruments available for lessons and
there is the opportunity to learn the
recorder at the lunchtime clubs. Every
week, children attend a music assembly
where they learn hymns and songs.
Kent Music School offer the chance for
Key stage 2 children to learn the violin-
this is at an additional cost to parents.
From the very first days at Lunsford
School, children are introduced to a
wide range of artistic techniques and
skills such as drawing, painting,
printing, junk modelling and collage.
They are also encouraged to appreciate
the work of other artists and gain an
understanding of why and how a piece
of work was created. Children are
encouraged to express themselves
through art and children’s efforts are
valued through displays of work.
Technology
Technology is divided into Information
Communication Technology or I.C.T. and
Design Technology or D.T. In fact, both
areas are to be found in every part of the
curriculum and the school is careful to
ensure that children apply their skills and
knowledge in this area to all their work.
Children are expected to find practical
answers to real needs. The school has a
suite of computers and these are used by
the children for word- processing, graphic
design, desk top publishing and data -
handling. Every class has an interactive
white board.
In D.T. pupils engage in designing, making
and reviewing models, creating menus,
preparing food and solving practical
problems. Often D.T. is linked to work
being done in other areas of the
curriculum. The school has a technology
room with good resources that allow lots
of practical, hands-on work.
Lunsford Primary School Swallow Road Larkfield Aylesford Kent ME20 6PY
Clubs
The school seeks to develop the skills and knowledge of its pupils in a whole
range of activities. To this end, staff encourage children to take part in extra -
curricular activities. Some activities are seasonal e.g. rounders club, but
other activities such as board games club run all year. Your child will usually
inform you about the clubs and you will receive a letter giving you more
information. This letter will ask for permission for your child to join the club
and clarify the arrangements you have made for the safe collection of your
child in after- school sessions.
Homework
We encourage parents to keep in touch with their child’s progress and cannot
stress too often the importance of liaison between home and school. The
school wishes to promote homework in a positive way. It is not regarded as a
punishment but as an enjoyable way of extending the activities of school.
Older children have set homework and all children are expected to read at
home. The children have a reading record book so that you can record when
you have heard your child read. There are also many informal opportunities
for parents to support school learning e.g. board games, card games, travel
games (on journeys), cooking, sports activities, shopping, etc. For a child, a
short time with the attention of an interested adult in a shared activity can
be as, if not more, beneficial than any number of exercises set by the school.
A full copy of our Homework Policy is available from the school.
Visitors to school and school excursions
Educational visits and experts visiting the school are an integral part of the
curriculum provision. Parents are notified in writing of all such activities.
Consent is usually required for an off-site visit. For some activities and
excursions we ask for a voluntary contribution from parents. No child is ever
excluded from a trip because the parents have not made a contribution but if
the school cannot meet the shortfall the whole trip may have to be cancelled.
